MLK Day – No School - Monday, January 19th, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
STAND UP AGAINST BULLYING Marana High School has launched a tip line where
students, parents and community members can call and leave information regarding concerns
they may have about being bullied or witnessing someone else being bullied. The tip line is
anonymous and a message can be left regarding the concern students or others may have.
The tip line number is checked each school day and tips are followed-up on by an
administrator. The tip line number is (520) 616-6444.
AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE DAYS
Please see Ms. Kati in Counseling if you are interested in
signing-up to attend. The deadline for registration is
Friday, January 16, 2015. The flyer and registration
form are included on Pg 6 & 7 of this Tiger Beat.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Happy Monday! I have great news! We have 657 Top Tigers from our first semester!
In order to be a Top Tiger, students need to have a 3.5 grade point average or higher
and no disciplinary infractions. Thank you to our parents for all your support at home
and for sending us kind and prepared students. I hope you have a wonderful week.

Marana School’s 2340 Foundation will award four
scholarships at Marana High School in the amount of
$2,500 per student. The scholarships will be awarded at
the 2340 Foundation Celebration of Excellence Luncheon
to be held on March 13, 2015.

A recipient of this scholarship will have one academic year in which to spend his/her
award on tuition, textbooks, educational supplies or housing for their post-secondary
education. Students must have been enrolled in the Marana Unified School District
for their full K-12 experience to quality for this scholarship. If your student has not
been contacted by MHS staff already, please have him/her pick-up an application in
the Counseling Office. Remember, applications are due by January 16, 2015.
STUDENT CELEBRATIONS
Congratulations to Elijah Barnett who has been selected from an initial pool of
102,600+ applicants as a semi-finalist in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program! Elijah will
now continue through the selection process with an opportunity to receive a $20,000
scholarship. To learn more about the Coca-Cola Scholars Program for high school
seniors, visit their website at www.coca-colascholars.org. Congratulations, Eli!
Hailey Murphy-Guerrero and Daniel Munoz were accepted into the U of A and
National Park Services’ Linking Hispanic Heritage Through Archaeology program.
They will be participating in hands-on laboratory and archaeological experiences

The Culture, Commitment and Competitiveness
philosophy is strong and vibrant on our courts, fields,
and mats.
Recruiting and NCAA Seminar - 7:00 pm at Marana HS Library this Thursday,
January 14th. A representative will provide parents and athletes with information
regarding NCAA, college athletic recruiting, and expectations for the athlete and families
to be a candidate for college athletics. Parents must come with their athlete. Hope to see

We had a tough week in sports but the other teams are noticing that Marana Athletics programs are a force to be reckoned with. Our programs are showing great improvements and progress on the court, field and mat. The Culture, Commitment and Competitiveness are vibrant in our soccer, basketball and wrestling teams!
The lady Tigers basketball team was named as one of the Fab Five in the Arizona Daily Star "Power 5 Rankings" this weekend. Congratulations on their hard work and continued commitment to their teammates, their coach and most of all themselves. ACADEMY GUEST SPEAKERS NEEDED
The Marana HS Academies are looking for guest speakers to share experiences, advice, and information
about various occupations. Academy groups will meet during Advisory on Wednesdays to hear about
different careers in their areas of interest.
If you are interested in addressing an Academy group as a guest speaker, please email Sarah Ross.

ACADEMY ADVISORY – Conferencing
All Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors will attend with their Academy Advisor BOTH days
this week.
Freshman Academy Advisory *READ CAREFULLY*. All MHS Freshman get regular
conferencing and mentoring with their FSA teacher. All MHS Freshmen rotate through
each Academy during both FSA and Advisory to get exposure to careers, electives, people,
and social connections – to help them Discover Their Place. Freshmen are scheduled to an
Academy Advisory that corresponds to their current FSA Academy focus and can see their
new schedule in AriseNet.
