Dear Members,It is my privilege to be writing this message as the President of SCC for the new term. I would like to thank all members who attended the annual General meeting (aGm) on 24 april 2012. I also would like to thank those who sent in their apologies for not being able to attend the aGm.

On behalf of my colleagues on the General Committee, I thank you all for electing us into office this term. Thanks are in order for the Past President and the outgoing GC members, for all that they have done during their last term. at the same time, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the incoming GC members and am earnestly looking forward to working together with them.

apart from the successful elections of the new Office bearers, the Resolution to purchase the adelphi unit was carried by a majority vote. You can read more about the aGm on pages 4-5.

FOCUS FOR 2012The new GC will focus and propel the Club to greater heights this year. to be the Premier Sports Club in the region, the support of the entire GC, the management and the membership at large is vital.

We need to build up on our signature Sports tournaments, which are gaining international recognition and our social scene, which needs to be more vibrant.

With the completion of the implementation of the It Enhancement Project this year, we hope to see all round improvements in efficiency and productivity. With the Club’s improved website later this year, we should see the status of SCC as the top Club being further enhanced.

The GC will continue to establish reciprocal arrangements with reputable Clubs of good standing around the world for our members to benefit while overseas. I would urge members to enjoy the benefits of our 108 Reciprocal Clubs in 27 countries presently.

bearing in mind some of the previous year’s shortcomings in our finances and the gradual improvement in the first quarter finances, it is vital that we put in greater efforts in advance to building-up a positive financial situation in all our cost centres and in building a substantial reserve for the Padang lease renewal and the Dempsey Fields.

Q1 FOCUSIn comparison with the $174K deficit during the first quarter last year, the Club has performed better in the first quarter of 2012 by making a small surplus after non-operating income and tax.

The $248K growth in Operating Revenue, mainly from F&b ($123K), Sports ($74K) and Car Park Fee ($51K), was partly off-set by a $168K increase in Operating Expenditure mainly due to manpower Cost Increase ($135K) and Property and maintenance Costs ($25K).The Club’s F&b Cost of Sales as at YtD march 2012 was 42% as compared to 45% same period last year. However, we still need to further improve in this area.

may/June 2012 | tHE PaDanG 3

Gurcharan SinghPresident

non-Operating Revenue increased by 40%, amounting to $100K, mainly from membership transfer Fee ($50K), membership Conversion Fee ($37K) and Interest Income ($13K).

much still needs to be done to improve our Operating Revenue and non-Operating Revenue, while at the same time attempting to reduce Operating Expenditure and F&b Cost of Sales.

RULES AND BYE-LAWSto achieve our vision of being the top Gentleman’s Club, I appeal to all members to look at the Club’s Rules and bye-laws as facilitative and not restrictive. The Rules and bye-laws reminder on Page 13 is to bring us back to the basics at the start of this new term.

SPORTSThe recent Hockey Sixes tournament in march showed that excellent organisation can bring about success and a good tournament in terms of teams and supporters from around the world. Well Done! Hockey Sixes Organising Committee!

June this year will see the Club’s Soccer Sixes tournament and I am confident that with the efforts being put in by the Organising Committee, we will have another sporting spectacle. may I urge members to come forward to support and enjoy the Soccer Sixes, while at the same encourage our own SCC team.

SOCIALIn addition to the regular buZZ FROm tHE baR, QuIZ nIGHt and bRIDGE nIGHt, Wednesday 23 may 2012 will see the tIGER bREWERY tOuR. be amazed by the state-of-the-art brewery and a delectable buffet dinner being washed down with free flowing freshly brewed tiger and Heineken beers. Do register early for the tIGER bREWERY tOuR to avoid disappointment. There are limited seats only.

SCC NIGHT RACE FIESTAmissed getting your 2012 SCC night Race 3-day tickets? be sure to secure your tickets during the 2012 SCC night Race 1-day ticket launch on 10 may 2012.

The ever-popular SCC night Race Fiesta is an event not to be missed. The demand for tickets far surpasses the limited supply. use the online booking system via our website before the tickets run-out.

VISIT THE CLUBlast but not least, may I urge members to come down to the Club to banter with the GC members and other fellow members and enjoy the food, drinks and the entertainment.

Thank you. See you at the Club.

It was movie mania on 31 march as the Club held its annual Staff Party for the first time outside the Club, at m Hotel. The evening started with welcoming drinks where the staff had a chance to mingle, enjoy popcorn and gather at the instant photo booth for some fun shots. all staff was presented with a colourful cooler bag as a door gift.

The Staff Party Organising Committee kick-started the show with a “movie trailer”, where they showed off their talents posing as the Columbian lady, Rocky, Kungfu Panda, tomb Raider and Charlie’s angels. after the welcome address by the President, the long Service awards were presented to the following staff for their tireless dedication to the Club.

MOVIE MANIA AT M HOTELSCC annual StaFF PaRtY, 31 maRCH 2012

after tucking in to the sumptuous spread of buffet dinner with free-flow of beer and beverages, the attendees enjoyed the games and the lucky Draw sessions. above all this, everyone was looking forward to the “SCC Got talents!” Contest where staff formed teams to perform on stage to win the coveted first prize of $500 cash. all four teams did very well and all participants went home with a cash prize – now we know there are so many talents amongst the staff!

The overall winner goes to team 1 (from Finance, membership and marcom departments) with their witty and delightful local rendition to the movie, mama mia. another big winner for the night was George alexander (from Stumps) who won the first prize of $1,688 cash in the Grand lucky Draw.

as the evening programme came to a close, the music came on and everyone let loose on the dance floor till late. It was indeed another enjoyable Staff Party and we look forward to the next Staff Party in 2013.

Zul came back to rock the house with his intensifying guitar playing skills. Singing the blues and classic rock songs, he got everyone singing and dancing on their toes. Special thanks to The Glenlivet who co-sponsored the event.

SCC EASTER PARTYSatuRDaY, 7 aPRIl 2012

Themed as “The Enchanted Garden – Easter Party”, the courtyard and oval room was transformed to a world of “alice in the Wonderland”. Children were greeted with Rosie the Flower Girl as they ventured through story telling and a series of activities. They were also pleasantly surprised when we had Hedgerow mascot trees talking.

The children were also able to decorate their very own Garden Straw Hats and even went on a teddy bunny Hunt where they all walked away with a teddy bunny in their hands.

JAPANESE CUISINE NIGHTWEDnESDaY, 28 maRCH 2012

The Japanese Cuisine night featured live sashimi and sushi making at the Oval Restaurant. Served by service staffs who were dressed in traditional Kimonos, members and guests had a taste of being in the “land of the Rising Sun”.

after dinner, membersand guests enjoyed special Japanese Kirin beer and Yamazaki Whiskey at a one night promotional price.

ST. PATRICK’S DAYSatuRDaY, 17 maRCH 2012

In celebration of St Patrick’s Day, the Club had special promotions on Kilkenny and Guinness Surger. This promotion was exclusively for main lounge and Stumps bar, from 6pm onwards. It proved to be a great success, as we saw a great crowd at the Stumps bar and everyone was in the St Patrick’s Day swing.

WINE & CHEESE PARTY IN COLLABORATION WITHSCC ART COLLECTION OPENINGFRIDaY, 20 aPRIl 2012

What a historical night! members and guests came together to set a record breaking attendance at a Wine & Cheese party! We were sold out and reached the 200 mark days before the event. It was also a special evening for the Club as we launched the SCC art Collection.

almost five years ago, not long after the major Clubhouse renovation was completed in 2006, the Club decided to take a closer look at its art collection. The outcome of the evaluation was a happy one looking at the 24 good artworks.

today all these artworks have been reframed, conserved and re-hung in the Gilmour corridor, Padang Restaurant/landing, staircase and men’s bar in a way that we can clearly view them and appreciate them. Great thanks and appreciation goes to ms. tan teng teng for her expertise and great efforts carrying through this project.

The opening was honoured by four artists: mr ang ah tee, mr Koeh Sia Yong, mr low Puay Hua and mr Peh Eng Seng who were presented with a Club plaque, as special it was for the Club it was as well for the artists. For the artists, having a chance to revisit their works they created and sold three decades ago was an emotional affair.

after the opening speeches, everybody enjoyed the extensive spread of dinner, cheese and wine, leaving everyone spoilt for choice. Once again, thank you for making the Wine & Cheese Party a successful event!

Early TimesConsiderable research has been undertaken in the past to

establish the real roots of the game of balut – one particular

source dates the game to the time of the Roman Empire when

Julius Caesar was heard to utter the immortal phrase “alea iacta

est” or “The die is cast”.

by the end of World War II a group of american GIs (no doubt

descendants of the Romans) used to meet regularly in tocloban

at the airport Hotel to play poker. One evening there were

no cards available, so an enterprising GI located five dice and

quickly established a new game known as “poker dice”. This

game spread like wildfire around the Far East and is still played

with several permutations in Clubs and bars throughout the

region and indeed the world.

Enter Baluta couple of Danish businessmen who were stranded at the local

airport hotel, which was owned by one Eddie Woolbright, saw

the popularity of this game but realised it was not possible to

play it properly with only two players. They therefore acquired

a set of five dice from a group of nearby mahjong players and

started to play a new game.

after several hours play – with the assistance of copious bottles

of beer – they established the rules of a new game played with

dice numbered from 1 to 6 rather than the number and picture

dice used in poker dice which matched playing cards.

They had no idea what to call this game and decided to go for a

walk to clear their heads, accompanied by Eddie. Whilst walking

along a street they came across a street vendor selling a Filipino

delicacy – an embryonic duck foetus still in the shell – that was

advertised by the vendor calling out “balut! balut!” Eddie and

the two Danes looked at each other, smiled and shook hands,

perceiving that they had found a name for their new game –

balut.

HISTORY OF BALUTAN UPDATED DEFINITIVE HISTORY OF BALUT IN THE FAR EAST

Article updated by: John Lewis Taylor

The Move to CebuEddie Woolbright moved to Cebu City in the South Philippines

in the fifties and introduced the game to the british Club where

it was regularly played thereafter. a rule was established in the

bar that any player throwing five of a kind in one throw had

to swallow a balut! This did not apparently impede its growing

popularity amongst the drinking members who appreciated its

aphrodisiac properties. This rule remains in force in many bars

in the Philippines where balut is played – chiefly by the bar girls.

Thence Singaporebalut was brought to Singapore from Cebu by the late Captain

tony Church in the mid-sixties who introduced the game to the

now defunct Jan’s Cafe in D’almeida Street, off Raffles Place –

where the Republic tower now stands.

Commercial “tuan besar” used to meet regularly there on

Saturday mornings to discuss the week’s happenings, followed

by the inevitable game of balut to decide who would pay the

morning’s contribution to malayan breweries! Singaporean

balut regulars will immediately recognise names like Clifton,

Fulton, Thorburn, Church, Watson, bonnichsen and mole.

Singapore Town Club & OthersThese gentlemen and other like-minded players took the game

to the Singapore town Club in 1973, where it became the Club’s

main activity. The Club’s Chairman, ng Kian Fong, and tony

Church, proceeded to create and publish the current StC rules

of balut in 1978.

about 1974 onwards, balut rapidly became popular in other

Singapore Clubs, notable the Singapore Cricket Club and the

Recreation Club. It was played regularly in the (old) men’s bar

at SCC. Strangely, the balut Section was not formed until 1984,

with other Clubs following suit - The tanglin Club, The british

Club (Singapore) and the national university of Singapore

Society. The local league also started in 1984, and is still going

strong today.

Further AbroadEmissaries from these Clubs then spread the game during the late

seventies and eighties to Kota Kinabalu (Kinabalu Yacht Club),

Hong Kong (Kowloon bowling Green Club), Kuching (the Sarawak

Club) and brunei Darussalam (The Royal brunei Yacht Club).

The game also found its way to australia (Perth and Darwin),

Spain (majorca) and to Peninsular malaysia (Johor and negari

Sembilan) and in 2007 to Thailand (The british Club bangkok).

all of these have participated at one time or another in the StC

Interport Competition which was started in 1981 and has been

played every year since in Hong Kong, Sarawak, Kota Kinabalu,

Singapore and Thailand. In 2011 it was played in Singapore.

This year the Kinabula Yacht Club is hosting on behalf on the

Singapore Cricket Club, (last years winners) to coincide with

their 60th anniversary.

Top ScorersThe highest score achieved at Jan’s Cafe was in 1973 by Kris

bonnichsen with a total of 166, a record that stood until 1982

when the late former SCC, President len Foster scored a 169 in

the men’s bar.

Rodney Huxham at an in-house game at SCC, in October 1984

achieved the same score. On October 10th 2007, a 169 was

again recorded by Simon Davies in the Churchill bar of the

british Club bangkok. So all baluteers are still striving for that

(impossible) 183.

And The Danes?meanwhile the two Danish businessmen mentioned above

eventually moved to bangkok and introduced the game there

to the bar scene where it proved equally popular, especially

amongst expatriate Scandinavians and other Europeans.

The International balut Federation with a branch in bangkok

was founded in 1972, followed by Singapore in 1975, after which

the IbF grew tremendously and now has franchised branches

worldwide and organises a world championship every year in a

different location.

Originally IbF members played balut under the same rules as

used in the Philippines, or the Singapore town Club rules as we

know them.

However, they have since evolved new rules and play what is

basically a four-column game with various bonus points and

each balut counting as 30 points plus the score on the dice.

article by mathavan Devadas & Jiawen ngeoww

The 18th SCC International Hockey Sixes was held in pleasantly mixed weather over the weekend of 3 and 4 march. Sunny weather, with a light drizzle on Saturday met 60 teams from australia, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, malaysia, Sri lanka and Thailand on the Padang.

The participating teams equalled the largest event held (in 2010), but a record number of ladies teams (24) were involved this time. notable was the participation of the north Queensland Rubies which represented the first time that an indigenous team of players, male or female, had played in a competition outside australia.

The weekend started on Saturday with the men’s pool matches and ended with the ladies in action. by the end of the day, the SRC, Seven Stars and Sentul SC were looking dominant in the men’s competition. In the ladies tournament, SCC, KlHC and Seetha Devi were looking very promising.

The Saturday night party’s theme was “Heroes & Villains” and the marquee abounded with Supergirls, Supermen, Wonder Women, Catwomen, teenage mutant ninjas among others. The crowds were entertained by some funky beats from the band and DJ. The last revealers were seen crawling away about 2.00am, with no one left sleeping on the Clubhouse steps thankfully!

Sunday started with the knock-out tournament for the men’s bowl and continued with few surprises. The SCC ladies Gold team made its way into the ladies bowl final against the Super Dux from australia and with a golden goal.

For the second year in a row the ladies Cup Final proved the most enthralling game of the weekend. Seetha Devi came from 3-1 down to equalise with the last touch of the game and then steal the winner with a golden goal.

The guest of honour madam Halimah Yacob, minister for State for Community Development Youth and Sports graced the occasion and assisted in presenting the medals and trophies.

to give you an idea of what it’s like to be part of this special event Jiawen Ngeow, shares with you her take on the weekend…

many of the players in our team were Committee members and instrumental in ensuring the event ran smoothly, and we thank them for all their work. Coach Kanan was inspirational as always, and coached us to victory in the bowl. We participated in many exciting games and aimed for nothing less than gold, hence our team being aptly named SCC Gold. Riding on this self-fulfilling prophecy and of course, showcasing the well-honed skills of the players, our team was indeed made for gold.

In our first game, we were up against the overall tournament Champions RSC Kl. Despite the opponents being national players from malaysia, our team held its ground with brilliant play from the sturdy and reliable defenders, Denise, Pauline and Jiaxin. We lost the first game, however, with RSC Kl playing half the game with seven players and not six, this may be no surprise!

We had several tough games throughout the day and won the last game with an ingenious game plan from Captain Denise (a warm up glass of margarita). We found our boost and with the extra kick, Kirsty scored the winning goal.

Day 2 threw the team into a do-or-die, make-or-break situation. We were in the Div 3 category (Premier were in Div 1) and every round was a knockout round and our team risked displacement from the tournament with every game. Despite being unable to score a field goal in the first round, our team came through in the penalty shoot-outs.

Sharon, our trusty goalkeeper, did a commendable job, holding the fort for the team. I was always selected to go first and according to our captain, this was to help settle all our nerves with an early first goal.

We finally made it through to the final after another heart-stopping penalty shoot-out where myself (Jiawen), muna and Denise led us closer to the gold medal and into the final.

The finals had us playing against an experienced and well-organised team from australia. midfielders laura, muna, and Shingo fought hard to break through the defense of our opponents on various occasions. Our defenders were constantly under attack, however, Pauline and Denise worked tirelessly and as a team we had the stamina and the skills to keep them grounded. It was a game well played, with both sides fighting tooth and nail to score that elusive goal.

The game was an adrenaline rush from start to end as neither side was able to convert and the game once again ended on penalty shoot-outs (after extra time), which appears to be one of our team's many strengths. Sharon was awesome, and held my nerve. needless to say, we won and were crowned champions of our division. SCC Gold is indeed an apt and prophetic name for our second ladies team.

all work and no play makes for a very dull tournament and team. aside from the tough yet skillful work as the team made their way to the final game after game, we also thoroughly enjoyed the fringe activities – dressing up as super heroes and dipping in the pool under the ever hot Singapore sun!

Thanks to all who made this event possible and a big congratulations to our First team who finished in third place in the Cup Competition – an awesome achievement and they were unlucky to not have made the finals.

In march, the Section went on tour to the Kinabalu Club, for their yearly Invitational tournament. Other clubs from Sabah also participated. We kept up our winning streak with the team of Else & Rolv Stokkmo and bill Rae & John taylor winning the team prize. Else & Rolv were also second in the pairs, and winning enough wine to open a bottle shop. The Kinabalu Club were marvellous hosts and gave all the players a first class barbeque out on their verandah on the final evening. an excellent local band provided golden oldies for us all to dance the night away. In addition, Kris bonnichsen won the all Comers Cup at the The british Club bangkok on 10 march, with total score of 638. at our own in-house march night we had a total of 32 members and guests attending. Joyce Foster, who has the ability of either winning or coming last, was this time victorious, scoring 714 at an average of 119. However it must be mentioned that Joyce obtained five baluts during the course of play. Recently our Convenor was kindly given access to the Club’s archives, to establish when balut actually became a Section. Surprisingly it was as late as 1984. no doubt this was because SCC won the 3rd Interport in 1983 and had to host in ‘84. The Section seems to have lolled in the doldrums until 1992 when Peter Khoo became the Convenor. Since that time it has progressed from 60 members to 170, with about 40 being very active at all the Section’s functions. DATES TO REMEMBER:

• Our aGm – tuesday 15 may at 7.00pm, Gilmour Room• First local league match – Wednesday 16 may• 31st Interport – Friday 23 to monday 26 november

TOUR TO BRISBANE TATTERSALL’S CLUBarticle by: tan bak Choon | Convenor: tan bak Choon

It has been quite a while since the billiards & Snooker Section embarked on a major overseas tour. 2012 is going to be different. With the enthusiasm of michael Yeomans and his leadership – a major tour idea was conceived with mike leading as a tour manager and boss.

The tour attracted eight players and two supporting wives. We were fortunate and proud to include the Singapore Cricket Club’s President as one of the eight touring members. On paper this was going to be a very important date in our calendar. We went to brisbane to visit brisbane tattersall’s Club which is also our reciprocal club in australia. They have visited us on two other occasions and we had to do this tour to demonstrate that we were friends for life.

The touring party – mike Yeomans (and wife, Cathy), manu bhojwani, Victor Yeong, tan bak Choon Joseph Yip, Ong Chin leong (and wife, mei), David Yim and our very own Kwek norman (Kwek Chock meng).

When we arrived at brisbane, we were greeted by dark skies and rain – which was not enough to dampen the spirit of SCC. all participants were sure that this is a major tour and therefore the weather will not deny us sunshine.

all of us (except for David Yim) stayed in the tattersall’s premises. There was no room for David and he had to stay in another hotel nearby. a make-shift headquarters was quickly set-up in Victor Yeong’s room where cocktails and briefings were held.

The President was really generous – treating all of us to one of the finest Italian restaurants in the city along the river bank. It was a beautiful evening, with great wine and fantastic food. It was so good that both Victor Yeong and David Yim decided to celebrate their birthdays in the same restaurant. Of course all of us were invited again.

We started our business by playing The brisbane Club (which was introduced to us by tim Woolly of the tatts). The brisbane Club has its premises in a commercial building nearby and they boasted about their two beautiful tables. For the first time in our history we fielded a player who sounded like a golfer – Kwek norman. However “norman” quickly realised that he needed to practise more in order to impress others. names like norman do not help. Great evening, and we end up winning our tournament but the night’s biggest winners were the participants. lots of handshakes, soft diet (drinks) and friendly overtures from both sides.

The next evening, we went for even more serious business – our snooker game against the tatts. We had to play with a tie as that was their dress code. 18 games were played (singles and doubles) and we narrowly lost 10-8. The blame was level at Kwek norman who was quite clearly lacking in match fitness. In between the games we were hosted to a three-course sit down dinner which was brilliant. at the dinner, we presented our history book to them so that their members could learn more about SCC and come visit us. They in turn presented us with a plaque which has just arrived from the supplier.

Great trip, good camaraderie and hopefully not to long before we organise the next one. mike Yeomans was given the task to groom the next tour manager.

OPENING SEASON CARNIVALarticle by: anwar Gaffoor | Convenor: George abraham

It is traditional for the bowls Section to have a carnival to celebrate the opening of the season and this year we had a good turnout of 26 members and a guest on Saturday 11 February. Format of play was mixed triples carousel with three bowls. The carousel is a very popular game format as it involves a change of position after every five ends so bowlers get a chance to be lead, second and skip in alternate games.

We started off with another tradition – the Spider. The winner was none other than Rodger Kimpton who seems to have a knack of winning spiders and he certainly appreciated that wine bottle which came to good use later that evening.

after 15 fun-infused ends in good weather, the games came to a close and it was time to adjourn to The Deli Verandah for a light dinner which consisted of mee Soto, Popiah Goreng and desserts. It was a refreshing change from the usual fare and was well accepted.

Prizes were then given to the winning team by GC member Joyce Foster, consisting of Rodger, Retna and Rita followed by the team in second place consisting of Virginia, michael and Sylvia.

a fitting opening to our season for this year. now time for some serious competition bowling…

IT’S RAINING CRICKET: CELEBRATING SCC’S 160 BIRTHDAY!article by: Push Sharma & ash Raivadera | Convenor: ash Raivadera

MCC DINNERWhile the league season only started in march, the Cricket Section and the SCC has been awash with “cricketing things” since the beginning of the year. February saw the first marylebone Cricket Club dinner take place at the Gilmour Room and terrace, where various mCC luminaries from South East asia graced the Club with their presence at a dinner very well conceived and organised by Hugh Ellerton.

The SCC was proud to welcome (amongst others) HRH Prince tunku Imran and Charlie Chelliah from malaysia, and Singapore Cricket veterans Joe Grimberg and Harbans Singh (mCC Honorary life member). after a short speech by Hugh Ellerton, tunku Imran invited the collective to malaysia for the next dinner, and plans are already being made for an SCC vs. mCC-Exiles game on the Padang for later this year.

CAPTAIN’S COCKTAILSIn February, the Cricket Section also celebrated the beginning of their 160th season of Cricket on the Padang with Captain’s Cocktails, our traditional season-opening social event. The popular and well-attended event was held at the Padang Restaurant, where over a 100 Section members and their guests were introduced to the league and Saturday XI Captains for the 2012 season. Convenor ash Raivadera welcomed the guests and gave them a history lesson, while Captain of Cricket Duncan Reynolds introduced the Captains and revealed the Section’s master plan for cricketing domination.

We were also delighted to welcome former England Cricket legend baroness Rachael Heyhoe-Flint to the event. Speeches were followed by dinner and a free flow of wine and beer until the early hours and the event provided a great opportunity for the Section to meet and to welcome many new Section members to the SCC.

PEPSI ICC WCL DIV 5February also saw International Cricket arrive in Singapore, with this all-important ICC qualifying tournament played at Kallang, Ia and at SCC. The Club was host to a variety of games between teams coming from as far-a-field as Cayman, Guernsey, argentina and bahrain and the SCC was well represented in the Singapore national Side by Riaz Hussein and Chris Janik.

Congratulations to Singapore for a comprehensive win over malaysia in the finals of the tournament held at Kallang and

well done on the promotion to Div 4. The Singapore Cricket association held a celebratory dinner at the Gilmour Room to congratulate the players on a job well done.

COMMONWEALTH CUPmarch saw the culmination of the popular Commonwealth Cup with the wooden spoon being fought over by the antipodean Jelly Fish and the EmEa focused Wild Geese. The finals were played out between the local Roti’s and eventual winners the Gurkhas from the Subcontinent. an excellent competition, enjoyed by all and a great way to start the season.

SCA CRICKET LEAGUE 2012The much awaited cricket season is back and the weather gods have so far been very supportive, although some junior cricket has been affected. as seasons change, so do Captains, players and player selection procedure – and 2012 is no different.

The start of the new season witnessed a very positive performance of SCC teams across all divisions, with some bIG wins being registered. In their opening match, the new-look SCC 1st team (lions) defeated muCC by over 200 runs, with andre De lange scoring an excellent 141. The Club’s Div 4 “Jaguars” side also registered a comprehensive win in their first outing, with a huge seven wicket margin against SPa at the Padang.

In the much awaited home derby (tigers vs. Cougars) the Cougars remarkable unbeaten run was abruptly brought to an end by a solid innings from newcomer Dene border scoring 58 on his first outing for the Club. Congratulations should also go to debutant andrew Goldsmith who scored 50 on his first Padang outing for the 1st team.

It seems that the sweaty Cricket Section box has been busy this month! Cougars fought back in their second game registering a three wicket win against anZa and brought back the Golden Sheila.

The Saturday XI too had a winning opening game as they defeated anZa Dream team by eight wickets, whereas SCC Junior Cricket tied their opening game against SCa Colts, this being the first tie of the season.

The Sections newsletter, baIlS, was re-launched for the new season, providing a weekly snapshot on all league matches played by SCC teams. Pushpendra Sharma and Vipul agarwal have volunteered as editors to assist trevor larbey in this initiative. Please contact them if you would like to contribute an entry.

Finally, on the occasion of SCC’s 160th birthday, we hope this season brings a lot of glory to the Club through the SCC Cricket Section. We are committed to making it a memorable year.

DARTS TRANING NITEas the number of members in the Darts Section has grown to 100 and quite a number were new to the game, a darts training night was organised on the 1st march. balbir “bill’ Singh, our ex-convenor with extensive knowledge of the game both from the playing and organising aspect of the game gave an excellent talk.

He covered many aspects of the game such as the etiquette of the game, the various positions and techniques that a player can adopt and a brief introduction to the various types of dart games.

The key message from the night was each player must experiment to develop his preferred style and type of darts to use. With

these insights, we hope that all players will spend more time on the boards especially the darts board in the men’s bar which is available every day. a very big thank you to balbir (bill) for the guidance.

COMMUNICATIONSection members should be receiving the Darts Section schedule of events via email. If you have not, please email the Convenor at [email protected] to receive yours.

You may also refer to the Section notice board in the Clubhouse if you do not have an email address. Please do inform the Convenor of any changes in your email address.

INTER-SOCIAL CLUBS GOLF TOURNAMENTarticle by Jurgen martiens | Convenor: lim Khoon

Having survived a fast start to 2012 with a draw in our obligatory Interport match against Johor Golf & Country Club for the amaladass Shield on 14 January, and welcoming the year of the Dragon in our “lo Hei” game on 3 February at Seletar Country Club, we looked forward to the first game in the Inter-Social Clubs Golf tournament (ISCGt) with great anticipation.

We had not done too badly last year, but ending up in fifth position in the third leg, did cost us the championship. The objective was therefore to do better this year.

all seven participating teams in the ISCGt competition were given a set of new golf shirts of the same design, but each team was wearing the shirt in a different colour such as white, yellow, green, blue, red, pink and purple. We looked like a rainbow on the Raffles Country Club lake Course that kept the rain away. The colour purple for our team was special – we looked magnificent, stately.

Regrettably, that was not to our advantage. We came in third with 291 points, Serangoon Gardens Country Club was second with 296 and our neighbours across the Padang, Singapore Recreation Club emerged champions of the first leg with 298 points.

Individually, our very own Raymond lee walked away with the Overall best Gross title, returning with the gross score of 73. Raymond also took SCC’s top spot for the day with 38 stableford points, followed closely by Denny Siow with 37 points.

nevertheless, it was still a good show. We look forward to the next game.

THE SECTION IS INFULL SWING!article by: lorna Campbell | Convenor: mathavan Devadas

Following the excitement on and off the pitch at the International Hockey Sixes, the ladies teams started their season with a bang while the men had to square up against each other.

THE WOMEN.... (Thanks Roz!)The Premier team had to reign in their enthusiasm when their opening match was pushed back a week but Div 1 got things off to a great start with a 5-0 romp over RP.

The following week, both teams were in action. The 2nd XI played in an absolute scorcher (3.00pm start) against tornados and earned a very well deserved 4-0 win with goals from Kirsty, Georgie, Kai and Denise. mVP went to billy but it was a great effort by the whole team, particularly given how hot it was. next up was Holland a on Sunday in slightly cooler conditions. The Dutch went 1-0 up but SCC fought back very hard and was unlucky not to convert some chances with some great work from Jiawen, Shingo and Georgie up front. unfortunately the equaliser did not come and the attacking nature of our play left us somewhat exposed at the back resulting in the two more Dutch goals. mVP for this game was Georgie but there were also some great moments of individual skill from Jia Xin and Sophial – keep an eye on these two for the future!

The 1st XI finally got their season off to a start against Police and the distribution of last year’s “Runners up / First losers” medals by Geer before the match served as a timely reminder of what the team must aim for this year! SCC won the match 3-1. Roz slotted in two and azizah also got onto the score sheet. On the Sunday it was a quick 10 minutes against Ia before lightning brought things to a halt. It was a good start though, a definite step up from the previous day with several chances created including a shot from Emily which hit the post – a great indication that there is more to come from this team.

Onwards and upwards for both teams with a few cheeky socials slotting in amongst the matches and training I am sure!

THE MEN.... (Thanks Toby!)Following the promotion of the 3rd XI from Div 2 to Div 1, the opening game of the season saw a bone crunching encounter between the 2nd XI and 3rd XI at Sengkang. The tussle proved a high scoring affair with the 2nd XI finding themselves 4-1 down at half time. The 3rd XI frontline will tell you it was down to their scoring prowess whilst the 2nd XI defence might highlight the absence of anyone between the uprights. Fortunately the keeper

having finished his hospital shift made it for the second half and three goals later the 4-4 final score line closed out a frustrating 70 minutes. needless to say a few players probably wanted to return the keeper to the said hospital!

The 2nd XI had two games in the opening weekend and in the second fixture, short on personnel and gas, they took on the favourites for the league, the Dutch Club. Digging into their reserves the SCC found themselves up 2-0 before a contentious goal after the whistle and a righteous umpire (is there any other sort?) turned the encounter on its head with 10 minutes to go. Having run out of steam and subs a 3-2 loss was a bitter pill to swallow from a game the SCC dominated for the vast majority. With seven of the squad absent over the opening weekend, there is much promise for the season despite the early form and the 1st XI continue their hard work preparing for their season which begins in may.

Jolly hockey sticks everyone!

FLYING HIGH INTO THE NEW NETBALL YEARarticle by: Rachael bell | Convenor: amber Williams

The last few months has seen the netball Section go from strength to strength with the addition of new members, new JSm players, a new coach and fielding four teams into the 2012 SCC netball Friendly tournament. It’s fantastic to have so many new members and it is testament to the hard work, attitude and positivity of all the players who tirelessly promote the Section and strive to make it stronger.

The SCC netball friendly league has just finished its second year, with some great participation from teams across Singapore and all four of the SCC teams training hard and remaining enthusiastic despite the late night monday matches and some outstanding play by the other teams. The Hawks have performed consistently well in Division 1, going from strength to strength and managing to out-class rivals bedok in an eagerly anticipated game.

The Eagles took a few weeks to settle but their focus, positive spirit and desire to improve is paying off with a much more successful second round of matches. Our newest team, The Ospreys, have worked well as a team and continually improve with each match. a mix of their star shooters, good defensive play and sheer determination means we expect to see even greater results in all future games especially the Energizer league which starts in may.

The final results will be announced at the end of tournament party on 4 may at the SCC, giving us all the opportunity to socialise off the court and promote the SCC netball section. Fingers crossed, we hope to see the Hawks finish first, if not second in Division 1; The Eagles in the top 2 with the Ospreys closely behind in Division 2. We eagerly await the official results!

Our new coach Eric is bringing some much needed skills training to our game and making a real difference. training 45 determined women is by no means an easy task and I’m sure he’d like us to work more on our concentration and listening skills – but we look forward to continuing to progress under his guidance.

Off court, we’ve had a few social events including a farewell do for Shannyn and ben mcleod who have sadly left Singapore to return back to australia. Shannyn was a critical part of the netball Section and will be sorely missed by all of us – a big thank you goes out to her for everything she did, she may be gone but definitely not forgotten!

Finally, the 2012 aGm was held on 30 march. We had a good night, sponsored by mumm Champagne, plenty of participation and a great talk by sports psychologist Orla from mental notes Consulting, on maintaining individual focus, positivity and determination on the court – plenty of lessons learnt and take outs for all the team to start to deploy on the court.

at the aGm we voted in the new committee for 2012. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the previous committee for all their hard work and commitment to developing the netball Section over the last year. Thank you to amber, lizzie, Fathima, Sadaf, Kat, nicole.

The good news is that most of the committee want to stay in post for another year but we also have some new additions and it is great to see more people wanting to get involved. So welcome to the 2012 netball Section committee: amber, lizzie, Sadaf, Fathima, mandy, Rachael, Helen, anna, Gen and Kerry. We already have a great deal of activity and events planned for 2012, so if you want to get involved or find out more then please email us at [email protected]. Happy netballing!

The 1st XV finished the Premiership season as league winners, going unbeaten in the league for the second time in three years. a remarkable achievement!

under the leadership of Simon Etheredge, the 1st XV did the double over every team in the Premiership finishing ten points clear at the top. Instrumental in the season’s success was fly-half tom burns’ contribution, not only scoring a try in almost every game but marshalling the back-line with aplomb in his final season for the SCC as the man with the biggest shorts in Singapore rugby heads off to new York City for greener pastures. He will be sadly missed.

It was disappointing that the 1st XV once again fell short in the Grand Final, unluckily losing to bucks to a long range penalty kick taken in the last seconds of a marathon second half that lasted a full 52 minutes with no apparent injuries or stoppages.

It was a hard fought match with neither team hitting their straps and with Suhaimi having a great day with the boot, it looked like the SCC would hold out to make it a league and Grand Final Double but it wasn’t to be. a 23-22 loss in the darkness at CCab.

Preparations are underway for the SCC Soccer Sixes which will be held over the weekend of 30 June and 1 July and will involve inviting teams from across asia. We will  run an Open and masters tournament and also a charity event bringing in children’s teams from bangladesh, Thailand and Indonesia. We hope for full Section involvement for this event and thank our sponsors in advance for their kind support. We are working to secure the services of Ray Parlour, ex arsenal and England midfielder to be our master of Ceremonies and also to play in the masters tournament.

Owen monaghan and Ravi Krishnan are doing the organisation this year and have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. We wish them well as this is a time consuming effort and Owen also needs the time to get married. He is doing this in so many different places (Singapore, bali, malaysia, las Vegas, Spain) that George Clooney does not have a look in here.  Owen must be working for Hm Government in some capacity!

The Pads secured the Chinese new Year Cup after a 1-1 draw with the SRC at Dempsey. The trophy was retained as the Pads were the holders from last year and boon’s goal was enough to secure the trophy. mind you, I would be amiss if I did not mention the amazing goal line clearance from John Fernandez and an equally impressive save from amos boon that allowed the Pads to retain their Cup.

The Pads hosted a testimonial match recently for long stalwart Dan Sheppard and a reception was held afterwards at the Padang Restaurant. The Pads would like to thank Dan for his many years of loyal service to the Section and his numerous contributions over the years. a special thanks to Peter Schott for leading the tributes to Dan at the after match function and everyone had a very good evening as the team saluted Dan for his playing contributions to the SCC.

The Pads recently beat The british Club and went down narrowly to the Hotspurs Old boys on the Padang. The team is preparing for the annual Henrik lorenz memorial match in Phuket against HKFC and the match is set for 26 may. all the best to the team for that one.

SCC Firsts are gearing up for the HKFC Sevens in mid may. We will be hoping for a match against newcastle united, Sunderland or aston Villa in the group stages in what promises to be a mouth watering tournament. SCC Firsts are still top of the Cosmopolitan league and recently reached the Cosmopolitan Cup Final where they will play the Casuals in June.  andrew Hutcheon is top scorer in the league with more than 30 goals thus far.

SCC Strollers and SCC tigers continue to prosper and go from strength to strength in the Equatorial and ESPZEn leagues respectively.  both are playing at the weekends at Dempsey and both have large and talented squads. SCC tigers are a feeder team to the First team and an opportunity to try out new talent to Singapore.

The Soccer academy is up and running every Saturday and Owen, adam and Hutch have done a great job so far as we tap into the soccer talent in Singapore. We need to find the next Jamie Saarloos and he must be out there somewhere.

SCC had a banner time at the recent bangkok Sevens tournament and won the main tournament. This was a win all round for SCC as the nFl team beat the First team 2-1 in the Final. In total, SCC had four teams in bangkok which shows the importance of this ever expanding tournament hosted by the Royal bangkok Sports Club.

Our midweek teams are back on the Padang and it is pleasing to see our social teams back in action on the hallowed turf. The Thirds, lions and Pads have all been chomping at the bit to get the ball rolling on the Padang and now they are off. Dempsey has been superb as a back up location, but nothing beats playing at home.

That’s about it from a happy and satisfied Soccer Section and keep the faith.

CREDIBLE SHOWING AT THE NATIONALSThe masonry national Squash Championships was held from 10-17 march at Kallang Squash Centre. In the men’s Open, bryan Koh upset Club mate Vivian Rhamanan, no. 1 seed, to reach the final. However, despite a valiant effort, bryan succumbed in the final. Vivian eventually came in third.

In the Women’s Open, Joannah Yue went all the way, winning the final in a close five setter against Club mate mao Shi Yuan. In the boys’ age group events, tim leong and William Oon were second and third respectively in the boys u-19, liang Junyuan came in second in the boys u-17 and Rayden tan and Chua man Chin second and third respectively in the boys u-15. In the girls age group events, mao Shi Yuan won the Girls u-19 with Rachel leong second, while Clara tan came second in the Girls u-17. Though not as strong a showing as in the Singapore Closed Championships in January, overall it is still a credible performance by our players.

SCC SQUASH OPEN The SCC Open was held end January. more than 50 players signed up for the competition which ran over three weeks with the finals coinciding with the section aGm on Saturday, 18 February. The matches went according to seedings up to the quarter-finals when bryan Koh, fourth seed, beat Richard Hill, third seed, to enter the semi-finals.

another upset took place in the semis when udai Singh, our men’s captain and no. 2 seed, succumbed to flu and the tenacity of third seed anders Yeo. The final between Vivian Rhamanan, no. 1 seed, and anders was a tactical affair with Vivian coming away the winner. In the Plate competition, the finals was between a veteran, tim Howard, and a junior, Rayden tan, with the later managing to outlast the former in a close game to emerge champion. altogether a highly successful event with a large number of entries and many high quality matches.

TRIANGULAR CUP From 2 to 4 march, we hosted Calcutta Rackets Club and madras Cricket Club in the long running triangular Cup. Hosts clubs are normally triumphant and we were well prepared to defend the unexpected win we had in madras last year.

The first match was played on Friday evening between mCC and SCC. We put up a strong singles line up that helped us win 5-2 on the night. The second match featured CRC and mCC on Saturday morning. Here mCC were the stronger side, coming away winners. That left SCC with the task of beating CRC in the final match on Saturday afternoon to retain the triangular Cup. CRC put up a strong resistance despite playing their second match of the day. However, we again proved too strong in the singles to come away as champions. The official dinner and prize presentation followed the final match. Deputy President Phillip Gwee and GCb Chairman ananda Kumar were on hand to give away the prizes on a fun-filled evening with players taking turns to perform their favourite numbers. a farewell lunch hosted by Peter Rogers and David Palmer took place on Sunday.

big thanks to Zoher motiwalla for the effort in coordinating the event from arranging accommodation and transport for

our guests to getting the much needed funding. and thanks to all our members who donated generously to make it a highly successful event!

SECTION AGMHeld on Saturday, 18 april, the aGm was attended by a sizeable number of Section members. The presentation of the convenor’s report and accounts was followed by the election of office bearers. notable was the decision by Wai Keng, the Section’s Secretary, to step down. Wai Keng had contributed greatly to the Section over the past year and it was a loss to not have him remain in the committee. Our ladies captain, Shirley, also stepped down. However, she will continue to help with the juniors as she has done over the years.

We welcome back andrea nicholas, our previous Convenor, as ladies’ Captain. udai (men’s Captain), bill (treasurer) and mahes (Social Secretary) have graciously agreed to serve another year. The first order of business for the committee would be to finalise the calendar of events including a major tour for this year.
