JSM SPONSORSHIP SCHEMEe Singapore Cricket Club has been grooming young and aspiring sportsmen/women for over 50 years. Keeping the sporting scene alive is important to the Club and this gave rise to the introduction of the Junior Sports Membership (JSM) programme.

e aim of the JSM programme is to promote the Club’s Youth Development Programme and nurture sporting talents amongst the youths of Singapore. Under this programme, youths aged 13 to 26 who have a air in sports and are not in full-time employment may be admitted as a Junior Sports Member.

e JSM Sponsorship Scheme is a prestigious award and recipients of this award are those who display both an element of nancial need and a strong track record of contributions to their Section and the Club, on and o the competitive playing surface. Nominations for this award are made through Section Convenors with two rounds of evaluations by a Committee. In any given year, no more than three (3) awards will be oered to JSM of the same Section.

It is important to note that this scheme is not a charity. Its main aim is to nancially help ease the transition of all worthy JSM to Ordinary Non-Transferable Members and for JSM development in general. It also promotes sportsmanship and ensures that all JSMs are given an opportunity to shine.

Members are welcome to support the JSM Sponsorship Scheme. Its success greatly depends on your sponsorships! For more information, please contact the SCC Membership Department at 6338 9271 or email [email protected]

FROM JSM TO CHAIRMAN GAMES CONTROL BOARD:MR. ANANDA KUMAR

“e biggest inuence in my life was during the early days socialising with the Members at the Club. Playing alongside them gave me much drive, motivation and desire to be like them. In fact, I dare say that those Members were the main source of inspiration behind what I am today.

Being a Member of this great establishment also gave me the opportunity to hold oces. I am really honoured and privileged to be voted as a General Committee Member since 2007 and as a Chairman, Games Control Board since 2010.

If I had to relive my club life again, I would not change a single thing. It has been a colourful journey and I hope it will continue to be in the years to come.

SCC... IT’S MORE THAN A CLUB!”

MAIN LOUNGE TROPHY CABINETS

Announcements

GOODBYE & GOOD LUCKOn Wednesday 12 September, the President and General Committee hosted a farewell lunch for outgoing General Manager Alan Jones. During the lunch, President Gurchuran Singh presented a set of SCC drinks glasses to Mr Jones. Apart from GC Members, also present were immediate past President Manu Bhojwani and immediate past Deputy President Phillip Gwee.

e Club sta also had an opportunity to formally bid farewell and extend their well-wishes to the outgoing GM at an intimate tea session at e Oval the following day, where Mr Jones was presented with a silver plaque as a memento.

Mr Jones leaves the SCC to head Singapore Polo Club.

e Club wishes Mr Alan Jones all the best in his future endeavours.

Article by: Steve ompson

Four photographs of old Singapore have been added as backdrops to the ve trophy cabinets in the Main Lounge. ey are intended to complement the central cabinet which features the Club’s oldest trophy, the Challenge Cup presented to the SCC by visiting ships of the British Royal Navy in 1887.

e theme of the photographs, which were taken between the 1860s and the 1880s, is “Our Nearest Neighbours”, and the intention is to show how fortunate the Club is to occupy a location of such historical signicance.

e four historic buildings are, from le, Empress Place, Victoria eatre, Old Parliament House and the Hotel de l’Europe on the site of the old Supreme Court. All are within a two-minute walk of the Club.

e photographs were added at the suggestion of Club stalwart and former Balut convenor John Taylor, who was heard to declare, more than once: “ey will make this room!”

ANNUAL STAFF FUNDMembers are invited to contribute to the Annual Sta Ang Pow Fund. It is traditional that this contribution amounts to the equivalent of one month’s subscription. e fund is fully dispersed in the year of collection as an ex-gratia payment and distributed evenly amongst all sta. is is the only occasion in the year when Members may show their appreciation to the Club employees in this manner.

In keeping with recent practice, the amount will be debited to Members’ accounts and will appear on your October statement of account. is contribution is voluntary and Members may give written notice (e-mail is acceptable) before 31 December 2012 should they choose to make a smaller, larger or no donation at all.

On behalf of all employees of Singapore Cricket Club, the management would like to thank Members for their kind generosity. It has been a pleasure to serve all of you throughout 2012.

Announcements

Mr Winston Loong

Former General Committee and Life Member Winston Loong passed away on 26 September 2012 at the age of 66.

Winston served the General Committee from 2001 to 2005 where he chaired the Food & Beverage Subcommittee (2004) and Advertising & Promotions Subcommittee (2001-2003). He also sat on the Finance Subcommittee and the Information Technology Subcommittee (2001), the 150th Anniversary Celebration Subcommittee (2001-2002) and the Food & Beverage Subcommittee (1999-2003).

In sports, Winston was a good golfer and represented the Club in Balut, Billiards & Snooker and Golf. A ne gentleman and a good friend who always found time for his fellows, Winston will be greatly missed.

Mr Peter “Lurch” Ashforth

In October, the Club was saddened by the sudden demise of our friend, Peter “Lurch” Ashforth. Lurch was a great rugby man and a true stalwart of the Singapore Cricket Club. He served the General Committee from 1997 to 2005 where he sat on

several Subcommittees, most notable being Chairman, Games Control Board from 2001 to 2003.

Lurch epitomised the ethos and charm of SCC Rugby 7s and was the single biggest personality in shaping the tournament as being known as the Friendly 7s. He was a great friend of New Zealand rugby and through his support many young Kiwi rugby players got a chance to savour the atmosphere and camaraderie of the SCC.

During the millennium celebrations, the Padang eld was severely damaged. Lurch made a personal crusade to put this right where he oversaw the whole process of ensuring that the turf was in pristine condition. is was one of the legacies which he had le behind.

Older readers will know where the nickname “Lurch” came from but younger ones may not have seen or heard of the 1960’s TV show, “e Addams Family” which featured a manservant named Lurch, a laconic giant with a physical likeness, perceived by some, as being all too similar to Peter.

Lurch was a generous man but always very quietly. Indeed, many stories of his kindness have only emerged aer his death. Rest in peace, Lurch. You will be greatly missed.

WEBSITEREVAMPe Club is in the nal stages of revamping the SCC website. Members can expect a substantial improvement to the new website, along with new features and ultimately, a more user-friendly and “Member-friendly” platform.

e new website is expected to be launched by November 2012. Further news and updates will be disseminated via the SCC email blast. So, do watch out for it soon!

Always aiming to provide a dierent experience for our Members and their esteemed guests, the SCC Night Race Fiesta 2012 task force took the inspiration of an art gallery and transformed its entrance tent with chandeliers, carpets and displaying photos of previous night race events. We also had a few new entertainments like the Rodeo Bull and Table Top Ladies.

e Rodeo Bull was a hit (especially with the children) and we even had a competition for the person who could hold on the longest. e winner who hanged on for more than two minutes walked away with a bottle of Chivas Regal and an SCC hamper.

With specially customised costumes, the Table Top Ladies roved around with their tables and trays, serving and mingling with Members and guests. is created quite a buzz at our Public Bar at the Padang Field where we received many compliments.

As the night race ended, we also started our own SCC Night Race on our simulator. e undefeated winner from last year came in rst and won himself a bottle of MUMM Champagne.

With the renewal of the Singapore Grand Prix contract, we can’t wait till next year!

LADIES’ LUNCHEONFASHION SHOWSATURDAY, 6 OCTOBER 2012

OKTOBERFEST1 TO 19 OCTOBER 2012

Over 80 ladies and gentlemen attended the Ladies Luncheon Fashion Show on Saturday, 6 October 2012. Members and guests had a scrumptious buet lunch followed by a fashion show by “Indochine with Gaurika”.

We were proud to have our very own SCC Members from the Netball Section to parade the dresses. We also had the pleasure of inviting some SCC Male Members to escort the ladies. Out of which were our GC members, Mr Ananda Kumar and Mr Baljit Singh. We will like to thank all of our volunteer models for making this event a huge success.

It was yet another busy night at SCC as we celebrated Oktoberfest!

Susan Harmer & the Oompahs band had a special performance on 19 October and denitely electried the night at the Main Lounge which was decorated with a German theme. Members raised their glasses and drank to the cry of Prost!

At the Courtyard, plates of pork knuckles and sausages became the favourite order for Oktoberfest. Back at the Main Lounge, nothing is more exciting than beer drinking games with the “chicken dance” on the stage with winners walking away with special prizes.

Everyone started swinging theirs drinks and singing along to the sounds from the Oompahs. Soon the dance oor was lled with Members and their guests. e party lasted till late and was truly enjoyed by all.

CELEBRATING SCC’S 160TH ANNIVERSARYSATURDAY, 13 OCTOBER 2012

13 October 2012 marked the 160th Anniversary of the Singapore Cricket Club. We had an evening of music, dance, great food and most meaningful of all, an element of charity.

SCC President Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh presented a cheque of $21,718.61 (donated by the SCC Members) to Mr Manraj Sekhon, Vice Chairman of Yellow Ribbon Fund. In return as a token of appreciation, Mr. Manraj presented an exquisite drawing of the SCC Clubhouse painted by an inmate.

Aer the main event, the Main Lounge came alive with a comedy act by award-winning local and foreign comedians. e Gurkha pipers certainly brought the atmosphere to another level as they performed the “Happy Birthday” song to commemorate the anniversary of the Club. e evening closed with the band Face Facts continuing the night with more music which instantly got Members to the dance oor.

Happy 160th Anniversary, SCC– here’s to another 160 years!

ews HISTORY OF NETBALL

Article by: Rachael Bell

160 Ya

At 121 years old, (39 years younger than the SCC), netball is still a relatively young and developing sport, however, over the last few years, we’ve seen it rise greatly in popularity and dominance in world sporting events – a lot like our SCC Netball Section.

With an estimated 20 million-plus people, across 80 dierent countries playing netball and over 74 national netball associations, it’s becoming a hugely popular sport – and no longer just with women. e SCC Netball Section represents 0.0003% of that population with over 65 Section Members from across 15 dierent countries and we are still growing.

e game of netball stems originally from woman’s basketball and for anyone who knows the rules or has watched a game, you’ll know there are a number of similarities, primarily the objective of the game – shoot as many goals into the net as you can. Unfortunately for us, that’s where the similarities between the SCC Netball Section and the USA dream team end. However, now that we have a specialist skills coach on board, we are working on it!

e evolution of women’s basketball to netball started with Senda Berenson, a PE teacher from the UK who adapted the rules of basketball for her female students. She wanted to create a game that ‘maintained feminine decorum and slowed down potentially “strenuous” play’.

For those reading this article who have played netball, I am sure you would surely disagree with Berenson that her rule changes of not holding the ball for more than three seconds, not dribbling it more than three times or leaving your assigned zone has done little to reduce “strenuous” play.

If you don’t believe me, then just head down to the Multi-Purpose Court on Wednesday nights and you’ll see a lot of tired looking players heading for the post training squash and peanuts in need of rehydration. I also think the cricket team would agree that netball is denitely far from relaxing judging by their red faces aer their recent intersection carnival win.

For SCC, the Netball Section was started by three ladies – Saktti, Jo and Tracy. Keen to continue playing netball themselves, they joined together, recruited players and so founded the Section and the rst ever SCC netball team.

Just like netball as a sport, over the years under their guidance, the SCC Netball Section continued to gain in strength and standing in Singapore. With the strong leadership of the Captains and Convenors, most recently Saktti and Jo, then Amber, Shannyn and Sadaf, the Netball Section has thrived with new players joining the Club, increased visibility in the Singapore netball community and wider APAC, as we see more and more invitations to overseas tournaments and competitions.

Our Section membership has grown by around 30% in the last two years alone and our JSM players increased from around three players to 13 in the last year alone. It’s their passion, determination and leadership which has bought the Section together and cemented its place in the Singapore netball community.

eir tireless eort to promote the game and the Club has resulted in us holding our own Annual SCC Netball Friendly League with clubs from across Singapore and hosting the only all teams social event on the netball calendar.

Our rst team, the Hawks, are now up their competing in some of the top netball Singapore divisions and the Eagles and Ospreys continue to improve and strengthen under our coaches’ guidance. All of this couldn’t happen with out the support and assistance of the netball committee and wider Section – everyone should be recognised for their tireless participation, great play and promotion of the SCC and Section.

Back in 1963, the Netball World Championships started and netball has been contested at the Commonwealth Games since 1998. Singapore was fortunate enough to play host to the World Championships in 2011 with Australia, having already won 10 of the 13 tournaments played, emerging as the eventual winners. Whilst we are not quite ready to compete at World Championship level, we are already arranging our third SCC Netball Friendly Tournament for 2013 and planning is already underway for the rst ever Netball 7s tournament in Singapore. We are hoping our own Aussie contingent in the Section will help us to emulate that of the Australian national team over the last few years.

We have strong ambitions as a Netball Section. We want to build on the foundations that have been set, just like the International Netball Federation campaigning for netball to be included as an Olympic sport. So the Section will continue its campaign to get a netball-related trophy on Stumps wall and its name on the “Sports Section of the Year” board. With 65 players all focused on the same goal, we plan to be the ones writing the history of SCC netball over the next 160 years.

NETBALL – NOT JUST A GIRLS’ GAMEArticle by Rachael Bell | Convenor: Amber Williams

Back from our short summer break, the Netball Section heads t, fresh and full of determination into the nal few months of the year. A new league, a new second coach and plenty of new joiners means the Section continue to go from strength to strength. We welcome our latest intake of new joiners to the Section and new JSM recruits are keeping the rest of us on our toes and energy levels high – their enthusiasm is infectious!

16 September was the date of one the biggest (and most fun) events on the netball calendar – the Netball Intersection Carnival! is is always a highlight on the SCC social scene as the Netball Section gets to prove just how tough the game of netball really is! is year we had a fantastic turn out of teams from the other Sections including two teams from Cricket and Hockey, Squash, Darts and Bowls all picking their wits against the Netball Section. Despite searing heat, deafening noise from the Grand Prix main stage rehearsals and the Netball Captain’s Cocktails on the Friday night, it was a fun-lled aernoon, with some great game play and a great opportunity for the girls to talent spot – to recruit new players into the Section obviously.

Each team played three games against other teams with play os for rst, second, third and fourth place. ere were some fantastic games played – the Hockey Section had clearly bought their fan club and some outstanding skill demonstrated (Bowls and Squash in particular). e nal four ended up being Netball, Darts, the Cricket Bowlers and the Cricket Batsmen. Netball had a point to prove, having lost the trophy to the Cricket Section for the last three years and went out with all guns blazing but despite Kim doing her utmost to take Nick out of play. However, their height, speed and ball skills were too much and the Cricket Batsmen beat us by one goal!

With the Bowlers beating the Darts Section, it lined up as an all-star cricket nal – and what a match it was – Batsmen vs. Bowlers! e Batsmen led the way for most the match, but the Bowlers pulled it out of the bag in the second half ghting back to level the score at full time. Aer a tense ve minutes of extra time, the Bowlers won the match much to the delight of the supporting teams. Well done, boys (and girls)! It wastruly a great game and some players that we will denitely be looking to sign up to the Section!

ank you to everyone who took part in the day, we really hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! And a special thanks to Pascale and Wendy for all their hard work in organising it. Here’s to next year and maybe nally beating the Cricket Section!

Coming up in the calendar, we started a new league at the end of September. ree teams from SCC have been entered and it’s a great opportunity for us to reform as teams and practice our skills ahead of the next ocial league in early 2013 – we’ll keep you posted with the results. On the social side, plans are underway for Christmas festivities, the Bali Flames tour and some of our girls trying their hand at modelling at the next Ladies Luncheon – more about these (and photos) to follow.

Lastly I’d like to welcome our second coach Hui Mui who is joining the Section to help focus on skills development across the teams, we are delighted to have her on board and look forward to working with her alongside our current coach Eric.

As always, we are on the look out for new players, particularly the men, to join the mixed team. If you are keen to give it a go (it’s great tness training), come and join us on Wednesdays at 6.30-8.30pm at the SCC. We look forward to seeing you there. Happy Netballing!

35TH ANNUAL POT GAMES 2012SCC vs. THE TANGLIN CLUBSATURDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2012

e Pot Games was rst played with e Tanglin Club to commemorate SCC’s 125th anniversary in 1978 where the TC rst presented e Tanglin Trophy (now named as the Pot Trophy) to SCC. e Pot Games has now developed to nine games (where one social game was included) in this year’s Annual Pot Games.

Tennis was the rst played on 8 September 2012 at TC’s courts. Aer three years of consecutive wins by SCC, TC took the win this year for Tennis with a score of 6-3.

e Golfers played e President’s Golf Challenge Trophy on 21 September at Singapore Island Country Club where it brought us a draw.

Bowls geared up and fought ferociously bringing the Bowls trophy with a score of 6-0 against TC on 23 September at TC Bowling Green. is makes the overall standing at 1-1 draw.

SCC Cricket team did us proud with a score of 180 to 60 runs against TC. SCC Cricket has won the Cricket trophy four times in a row since 2009. It was still a very close ght till the very end where Darts, Balut, Snooker and Squash were concluded on 29 September.

e rst lady to be elded for the Darts game was Karen Blyth where she secured one frame in the Ladies Single – we were all so proud of her. At the Men’s side, Ganesh and Bill played the second Men’s Doubles. ey were not despaired of aer the seventh lost for the Darts team and kept their mental strength to the maximum, thus winning over TC with a score of 2-0. Final score for Darts: TC won SCC 8-1.

In Snooker, we were very close to winning the game. Snooker was rst played in 1993 at the Pot Games. SCC rst won the Tony Church Snooker Trophy in 1993 but lost to TC in 1994 and 1995. Since then, SCC retained the trophy for 11 years (1996-2006) and it went back to TC in 2007.

e Tony Church Snooker Trophy was never won by in TC for more than two years. In 2008, the SCC Snooker Section fought back and kept the trophy in SCC till 2011. is year TC won three singles and one doubles making it 4-3.

e Netballers played at SCC ground this year as a social game under the Pot Games series. SCC won with a score of 28-8 beating TC having the home ground advantage. Maybe it is time for us to consider Netball in the ninth game for the 36th Pot Games 2013 series.

At that point, the Balut match was very critical to the overall Pot results. SCC Balut was so close in turning the table around aer the sixth game following behind TC by 9 points. “is is the Captain speaking! I know you are having a good time with your drinks. But we are nine points away at the sixth round and now (aer seven rounds) we are so far behind, please do your best for the last round,” Captain Raj Kumar said. Aer the Round 8, SCC fell behind TC by 144 points. However, Sunita did well by championing the overall individual aggregate.

At the Squash courts, we started with a loss in the rst Single and rst Double. Nevertheless, SCC players squashed and beat TC 5-2 winning the rest of the three Singles and two Doubles. SCC Squash has now retained the Squash trophy for four consecutive years since 2009. Well done to the SCC Squashers!

SCC Deputy President, Mr Michael Grice presented the Pot trophy to the TC President, Mr Sim Yong Chan and congratulated TC on the win. ree cheers were given to TC in their victory.

SCC will be back next year to win the Pot!

On Friday 12 October, over 200 people attended the Bali Memorial Dawn Service on the Padang. It was exactly 10 years ago to the day that the terrorist bombs in Bali took the lives of eight SCC rugby players whilst on tour with the Club.

SCC Rugby Section Members, Club Members from across our sporting sections, the General Committee, representatives from Wanderers, Bedok Kings and Bucks Rugby Clubs, as well as the British High Commissioner to Singapore and the Australian Deputy High Commissioner to Singapore attended the service, which was supported by the bagpipes from the Gurkhas.

SCC President Col (Retd) Gurcharan Singh, ex-Rugby Section Convenor Graeme “Coach” Burnett and Rugby Section Captain Andy Douglas, all said a few words of remembrance and reection in honour of the men lost that day.

Not everybody present knew those who were killed and it was a great testament to all those connected to the Club and rugby in Singapore that so many people attended at 6.15am to pay their respects, 10 years on. It really showed the tremendous sporting spirit within our great Club.

e Rugby Section later held a Long Lunch at the Padang Restaurant to celebrate the lives of those who were killed. More than a few glasses were raised to those ne men and the stories and beers continued long into the night.

e Rugby Section would like to thank all the Club sta, especially Wendy Foo for the rst class organisation of the Dawn Service.

Article by: Ash Raivadera

Kumar Sangakkara’s story of how he and his Sri Lankan team mates dodged a hail of bullets in Lahore, Pakistan in 2009 held the complete attention of all those in e Padang Restaurant on Saturday 13 October 2012.

In Singapore to raise awareness for the Foundation of Goodness, the current ICC Test Cricketer of the Year, ICC Player of the year and ICC Peoples Choice award winner was a charm and humbleness personied. Together with former Sri Lankan test cricketer Russell Arnold and Sri Lankan legend Muthiah Muralitharan, the SCC was treated to a very special day.

e day began with a T20 game against the Unity Team, made up of the best young players who took part in the recent Murali Harmony Cup in Sri Lanka. is was a particularly special trip for the Unity boys, most of who come from an under-privileged background and with many being either victims of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami or of the recently ended civil war. ey performed well against the SCC XI, coming away with a 60 run win.

e game was followed by a bit of fun on the Padang with Murali (the man recognised by Wisden in 2002 as the Best Bowler of All Time, and in 2000 and 2006 as Wisden’s leading Cricketer in the World), showing

his skills and bowling an over each to SCC “legends” Suresh Shankar and Peter “Stitch” Hutton. While Suresh was troubled by the bowling, Stitch (the Rugby 7s Committee Chairman) actually managed to hit the great man o the square!

Aer media interviews and numerous signing sessions with parents and children alike, the three men then conducted a children’s coaching clinic on the Padang. Sadly curtailed by rain, we adjourned to the courtyard where Murali and Sanga conducted a 45-minute Q&A with the kids and their parents – all of whom came away with wonderful examples of great role-models within the game of cricket.

e clinic was followed by a three-course lunch (sponsored by BPL Global) in e Padang Restaurant, with wine sponsored by Rubicon Reserve Wines and another Q&A and auction of wonderful cricket memorabilia. Special thanks go to Andy Williams for his very generous donation of a Murali-signed rst day cover and Test Match Ticket which managed to raise a decent sum.

All three cricketers won many friends at the SCC with their charming and honest approach to the questions asked and all those present enjoyed an excellent aernoon.

We hope to see all three back at the SCC before too long.

Sadly the Section is losing the services of Stefanie Ang, who is moving on to administer other Sports Sections in the

Club. Stefanie was only with us for about a year but became extremely procient in running our day-to-day operations, particularly the “Team Balut” method of scoring. We welcome Choong Wenling who is taking over from Stefanie. A plea from the Section – Stefanie, please help Wenling settle in and explain to her the idiosyncratic ways and modus operandi of the Secretary.

We enjoyed an excellent day at the Pot Games hosted by the Tanglin Club, narrowly losing the Balut by 144 points. Tanglin Club’s total was 13,732, SCC’s 13,588. Other Sections did not do too well either, SCC losing the Pot for the rst time in 17 years.

As holders of the Annual Inter-Section Quiz Night, we have once again entered “e Dice Men” to defend the title. e Quiz Night is scheduled for Friday, 9 November. Under the Captaincy of Professor Brian Farrell, we hope to keep the dice rolling.

At the point of writing, the last league match of the season is scheduled to take place at the IA Club in Balestier Road on Wednesday 24 October. e present SCC’s Team 1 hold a fragile and precarious lead of a mere 168 points over NUSS Team 2 and 183 points over IA Team 1. SCC‘s total is 9,436, NUSS 9,268 and IA 9253. We will do our utmost to hold on to that lead and win the title once again.

In the individual stakes, SCC holds the top two places with John Taylor averaging 104.16 and Renee Balagopal with 102.20. e nearest challenger is Roland Pereira of IA with 101.04. Hopefully one or the other from SCC can win the Individual title.

Our in house monthly gathering has two more months to run and at present Joyce Foster leads the way with an average of 103.08. In second place is Sunita Kapoor with 102.03 and third place our Captain Raj Kumar with 101.81.

e 32nd Annual Interport will be hosted at the Kota Kinabalu Yacht Club over the weekend of 23 to 26 November. SCC has entered six teams with a total of 24 players, in our bid to retain the title that we won last year. Indications from KKYC is that there will be well over 160 players for this event.

Preparations are well underway for the Section’s Annual Christmas Party to be held in the Padang Restaurant on Friday, 14 December. Once again our illustrious Committee Member Mogens Andersen has done wonders in obtaining very generous sponsorship and some excellent prizes for the rae. We have engaged the Terry Mortimer Trio to play those golden oldies so Members and guests can sing or dance the night away. Please make a note in your diaries of this function as it promises to be a cracker.

It is with profound sadness that we report the demise of one of Singapore’s Balut pioneers, SCC Life Member and ex Committee Member, Winston Loong, who passed away on 26 September 2012.

Sunita dancing with joy aer taking third spot at the September Section Night

It’s a double win for Vashi for the September Section Night. Champion for the Individual Aggregate Score and Highest in Single Column. At the Pot Games, Tanglin Club’s total was 13,732, SCC’s 13,588.

MELBOURNE CRICKET CLUBWe had a total of 18 visitors from the Melbourne Cricket Club who engaged us in a friendly game on Saturday 25 August. e format was six teams of mixed triples played with three bowls over 15 ends. Our visitors took some time to adjust their play to our slower green which allowed most of our teams to take an early commanding lead which was then maintained to the end. Only two SCC teams had a close match with one losing to MCC 12-16 and the other just beating MCC by a single shot to win by 15-14. Our other four teams had commanding wins with the nal result of ve games for SCC to 1 for MCC. In terms of shots, we gathered 111 shots against MCC’s 65.

Aer the match, we laid out a reception for our guests and it was apparent they enjoyed the food, the drinks and the fellowship as some of them stayed on past the scheduled ending time. We presented a SCC plaque to them as well as gis of SCC ties and socks to the MCC Bowls Section ocials.

e reception was graced by our President, Col. (Retd) Gurcharan Singh, Chairman GCB Ananda Kumar and three GC Members – Joyce Foster, Steve ompson and Cynthia Robless.

It was not lost on MCC members that our President and Club ocials attended the reception and we are grateful to them for being present that evening.

MCC Lawn Bowls Section has kindly extended an invitation to visit them. We are considering to include a side trip to Melbourne when we visit Canberra for the 2013 Tattersalls Tournament.

NATIONAL MIXED PAIRSOur green was the venue for this year’s competition with a total of 14 teams playing over two weekends in September in a 2-4-2 format.

SCC players had the honour of taking the top three positions as follow:

• Champions – Christian Huang and Amira Goh• Second place – Matthew Ngui and Yong Lew Foong• ird place – K C Chew and Josephine Lim

Congratulations to our players for doing our Club proud. is is a ne achievement considering this is a national level competition.

2012 ANNUAL POT GAMESis annual match against Tanglin Club was played on Sunday 23 September on their green which is a fast turf. Format is mixed triples over 18 ends on six rinks. SCC won the match on all six rinks; convincingly on four rinks and a close ght on two rinks. Shots collected were 122 for SCC and 64 for Tanglin Club. is is a convincing victory and an improvement over our last encounter with them. Our congratulations to all players and to our Captain for this achievement.

Charming the ladies to join the Bridge Section

Trainer, Mr Carl Parker holding court Concentrating and exercising the grey cells

Article by Rachna Anand | Convenor: Howard Haythornthwaite

ree months on, the Bridge Section is doing far better than anticipated. Like a newborn it is slowly getting comfortable with its existence and the larger SCC family is warmly welcoming and reassuring its newest edition into its fold.

Since the formation of the Section, bi-monthly Bridge Nights have been organised at the Gilmour Room on a regular basis and occasionally at e Oval. If all goes well, from next year, we are hoping to have weekly Bridge Nights.

A Beginners Course was conducted in September-October, at the Men’s Bar and subsequently at e Oval. ese classes are being conducted by the bridge coach, Mr Carl Parker. ere are plans to continue with these courses next year too, with the Beginners Course starting in the second week of January and an Advanced Course in the second quarter.

e Bridge Section is going to organise a Dazzling Diwali Night on 15 November. Kindly look out for further details in the e-blast for the same.

We are truly heartened by the turn-out and response of our Section Members thus far. Although, we are a young section and have signed on a descent number of Members, we can’t do without and need the support of the Club Members to join the Bridge Section.

THE GLORY OF CRICKETCELEBRATING SCC’S 160TH

BIRTHDAYArticle by: Push Sharma | Convenor: Ash Raivadera

e last few months have been an exciting period for the Cricket Section and for SCC. Besides the league games there were a few tours that took place, where players from various SCC teams travelled to Penang and Sri Lanka. We also saw the Veterans league commence for this season, which was a rather exciting tournament.

Most teams have ended their season on a high and this has perhaps been a more rewarding season of cricket compared to the last year for SCC. Various captains and selectors who have been busy strategising to put together a strong side for the last few league games have done their job extremely well. SCC Jaguars and SCC Pumas have their last game le for the 2012 season. Good luck to both the teams!

PENANG 6’S TOURNAMENTere were 18 teams that participated this year for the 18th Penang 6’s tournament – some of the other teams were from Australia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, ailand, Malaysia and India. SCC elded 15 players split into two teams in a very competitive tournament. Although the outeld was lush and the settings perfect for cricket, boundaries were few and far between. Heavy rains dampened the mood on the last day of the exciting tournament, but we still managed to play the semi nals.

SCC teams did well in the tournament but both teams lost in the semi-nals. ose who represented SCC were Robert Hands, Richard Stapley-Oh, Nick Dorney, Phil Simmonds, James Kilbee, James Muruthi, Richard Holloway, Amandeep Singh, Jack Whiskin, Sukanti Sen, Ben Gliddon, Will Tipping, Chris Rogers and Pushpendra Sharma.

SCA CRICKET LEAGUE 2012: NOTABLE PERFORMANCESAll the hard work put in by the SCC Teams showed results. SCC Tigers ended their season on a high defeating SCA in a low scoring game, where they were defending 160 runs in 40 overs. Unmish was the highest scorer with 45 runs from 47 balls. Tigers fought back bowling the opposition out for a mere 133 runs. Congratulations to the Tigers who nished second in the Division 2 league displacing the mighty Cougars, who were the defending champions from year 2011. Celebratory drinks at the Stumps followed aerwards.

e most notable batting performance of the last two months was by Nasser Ahmad, who scored an unbeaten 151* in just 94 balls for Pumas against MUCC Kings at the Dempsey cricket ground. is was his career’s rst maiden hundred in Singapore. In the other notable performance Push Sharma scored two unbeaten innings scoring 87* in 68 balls for Pumas against Golden CC and the other an unbeaten 80* in 59 balls for Pumas against Mariners CC. Both these innings were played in the Yorker cricket ground.

e most notable bowling performances were by the following players:1. Bala Narayanan 3-18 for the SCC Vets against Spirits2. Suresh Shankar 3-24 for the SCC Tigers against SCA3. Push Sharma 3-31 for the SCC Pumas against MUCC Kings4. Vishal Rathee 3-31 for the SCC Cheetahs against Wanderers5. Steven Blaxhall 3-31 for the SCC Vets against ANZA

SCC CHAMPIONS OF THE VETERANS LEAGUE 2012e inaugural Vets league came to a tting conclusion on e Padang with a win for the SCC on the Club’s 160th birthday. Very ably led by Vets skipper Andy Beer, the win against the British Club in front of an audience that included Test Legends Muthiah Muralitharan and Kumar Sangakkara and a selection of supporters and advisers from the Stumps Terrace, saw the SCC team being crowned Champions of this new league.

On the day, Tom Oakden, Nick Power and Rupert Jakes performed with the bat, while tight bowling from Kulshaan Singh, Bruce Grigg, Sukanti Sen, Suresh Kalpathy, Simon Bird and Nick Power saw the boys home.

e Vets league has been a thoroughly enjoyable addition to the cricketing calendar and one that we are very proud to have triumphed at, especially at our rst time of asking.

Well done to all the old boys who took part!

LION-KANGAROO CHALLENGE TROPHY AGAINSTAUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSION(AHC)is was an annual xture that had not been played for some years. When we received a very prompt reply to our email sent to a general address requesting to establish contact with the person responsible for sports and social activities at the AHC, it was a very pleasant surprise. Very quickly we set 11 September as the date for the match.

A strong turnout of darters (about 30) from both sides gathered at e Oval that evening. AHC sta were pleasantly surprised to hear of the long history between AHC and SCC and the darts matches between us. Aer dinner, the competition (six singles and three doubles) began. Both teams were well matched and the score was soon tied at 4-4. It was down to the last single. Phillp Lachlan under pressure very calmly won his game 2-1 to seal victory for us 5-4. A mini competition was also organised for the ladies and a bottle of wine was presented to the winner of the ladies event.

It was a very social evening enjoyed by all. AHC and SCC will endeavour to continue this xture and we look forward to our visit to AHC next year.

VISIT BY ROYAL SUNGAI UJUNG CLUB For the last two years, SCC has visited RSUC to participate in their inter-club darts tournament and we developed a close rapport with RSUC. So when RSUC wished to visit us on the 25 August and despite it being a busy weekend at the Club with the Cricket T20 Tournament, we endeavoured to host them.

So we gathered at 4.30pm at e Oval Room for a friendly match. A group of about 12 made the journey from Seremban for the occasion and were warmly received by SCC darters. We played a main tournament and a mini ladies tournament.

Our darters enjoyed playing against the more experienced darters and though we lost both xtures, valuable experience was gained. Besides this, many friendly social darts games were organised through dinner and drinks. It was an enjoyable occasion and the party lasted till 11pm when RSUC darters with SCC darters decided to do a bit of dancing at the Main Lounge before their journey home. We hope to host more visiting darts team in the near future.

ANNUAL MATCH AGAINST BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONe annual match against BHC was hosted by BHC this year and a group of 15 SCC darters made their way on 17 August to the BHC premises for an evening of darts and fellowship. We were well received by the host who provided ample drinks and food to start the evening. We arranged a format that ensured that everyone had a game. So aer 14 games, SCC narrowly emerged winners 8-6. Many thanks to BHC for a wonderful evening and we look forward to having them over next year.

Article by: Jurgen Martiens | Convenor: Jurgen Martiens

On 22 August 2012 a good number of hard core Golf Section Members gathered in the Gilmour Room at 7.00pm to attend its Annual General Meeting. e Chairman welcomed everyone including the Club President Col. (Retd) Gurcharan Singh and then presented the Convenor’s and Treasurer’s reports, which were duly accepted, proposed and seconded. is was followed by the election of the following oce bearers:

Convenor: Jurgen Martiens Captain: Peter Salt Secretary: Daniel Morby Treasurer: Vincent Ho Committee Members: Julio Mok Choy Moo Chee

While the newly elected oce bearers were welcomed with lots of well wishes, the outgoing long serving Committee Members Lim Khoon (Convenor), Allan Muir (Captain) and Denny Siow (Committee Member) received a note of thanks for having served the Golf Section Committee most eectively and with much aplomb.

e newly elected committee was immediately called into action in order to round up a competitive team for the 3rd leg of the Inter-Social Clubs Golf Tournament that was scheduled for 31 August 2012 at Warren Golf & Country Club. is time we came in third out of seven having accumulated a total of 15 points, which puts us in second position aer Singapore Recreation Club with 20 points.

Raymond Lee and Stanley Ang turned in a credible 38 points each in a Stableford System 36 competition. e evening at Warren Golf & Country Club was rounded up with a sumptuous Chinese dinner followed by the presentation of winners and prices. A wonderful and good evening was had by all. Vincent Ho, Lim Khoon, Allan Muir, Raymond Lee, Frank Kok and a few others including the writer of this report stayed until the whiskey supply was running out. What a memorable day and night!

A couple of weeks later the Club’s Annual Golf Tournament was scheduled to be played at the most wonderful Garden Course of Tanah Merah Country Club on 13 September 2012. is was no doubt the highlight of the year. e newly elected committee had their hands full and with the assistance of our past Convenor Lim Khoon (whom we now promote to Convenor Mentor) we managed to put together the event. We had altogether 115 golfers participating in this tournament and all had a good time with weather permitting.

Once the game of golf was completed, all proceeded to the Club through heavy trac to gather at the Padang Restaurant for dinner, entertainment and presentation of prizes and lucky draw. We were privileged to have the presence of President Col. (Retd) Gurcharan Singh and GC Members Joyce Foster, Cynthia Robless, Ravi Chandran and Sher Baljit Singh and also the sponsors for gracing the event.

Much appreciation goes out to our sponsors who contributed in cash and in kind towards the event and the prizes for the Lucky Draw.

• APB Singapore (Tiger Beer)• Bank of Singapore• Belmacs Pte Ltd• COCA Singapore Pte Ltd • Cheng Huat (M&E) Pte Ltd• Himawari Japanese Restaurant• Moet Hennessey Diageo Singapore Pte Ltd (Johnny Walker)• Silk Express Freight Pte Ltd

I believe the Club’s Annual Golf Tournament was a rousing success. Our Compėre (Fr., godfather) or Master of Ceremonies Peter Salt added much avour to the evening with his witty contributions, so everybody seemed to have a jolly good time. e Lucky Draw winners must have been extremely happy. All in all, a most wonderful event!

Heartiest congratulations to the winners of the Annual Golf Tournament:

KL INTERPORT 2012Article by: Taswinder Singh | Convenor: Mathavan Devadas

Every hockey tour to KL has been successful with good memories and friendship for all the tourists involved and this year’s is no exception. A men’s and ladies’ team was sent to play at Royal Selangor Club earlier in September. We set o right on schedule and refreshments were arranged by some of the juniors on the bus. Credits to tour virgin Edward, who did an excellent job with keeping the rest hydrated on the journey.

is year, the group stayed at the Hotel Istana at Bukit Bintang following the good feedback from last year’s tourists. On Saturday aernoon, the Interport match between both men’s teams started at 4.00pm. Early into the match, Matt Joosa received a pass from Intekhab just outside the circle. He turned the ball to his reverse side inside the circle and slotted the ball into the far post. Both goalkeeper and their last man did not move at all. e 4-3-1 system worked well as SCC kept the pressure on them right from the start. e defence held by Max, Shakthi, Tas, and led by Jonathan, held rm cutting o most through balls sent to the RSC forwards.

RSC managed to pull one back, levelling the score at 1-1. It did not help that fatigue started catching up with the SCC team. At one point, Raj needed to be substituted because he could not feel his legs and Edward had a shoe that was peeling open that required taping. A rm team talk by Captain Intekhab brought back the discipline shown at the start and renewed ghting spirit in the later half of the match. Even as RSC moved into a much attacking strategy, the SCC defence held rm despite the defending numerous penalty corners. Final score: 1:1.

e ladies’ game started promptly aer the men’s game. e RSC ladies were quick on the start go and took the early lead against SCC. e SCC defence led by Captain Petrina was a major obstacle to the RSC forwards holding rm on many counts together with Sharonjit in goal. Le back Christine was cheered on as she managed to dribble more than a few RSC ladies. SCC ladies moved towards a more attacking formation in the later half of the match, which saw attempts towards goal. A few times, Christine and Kate managed to nd Yanling the lone forward who always running into space. However, the RSC ladies proved to be the better team with the match ending in their favour.

RSC named Tinghao as the best SCC player for the men and Petrina for the ladies. During the dinner reception, Charles from RSC was thanked for all his eorts in organizing a smooth Interport weekend with SCC.

HONG KONG TURNS BLACK AND GOLD FOR THE WEEKENDArticle by: Andy Douglas | Convenor: Terence Noe

It was the biggest weekend rugby tour in SCC history as the Black and Gold descended on Hong Kong in numbers to play HKFC and to commemorate the 10th Year Anniversary of the Bali Bombings when players from both clubs were lost.

e total number who turned up at HKFC for the weekend including players, Academy kids and parents and even the odd supporter was over 150 from the Singapore Cricket Club – a superb turnout!

e Growlers were up rst against a whole battalion of HKFC’s Old Contemptibles. in on numbers but not in waistline, the Growlers played valiantly in the rst half but just couldn’t cross the whitewash and at halime it was still 0-0. Sheer volume of numbers, some of whom were even aged less than 40 nally paid dividends for the hosts and they scored a well deserved try.

A last minute try put a bit of gloss on the 14-0 win for Old Contemptibles but a ne aernoon was had by all. It was brilliant to see the old timers putting in the eort particularly Daisuke Sano who ew in from Tokyo for the occasion. An inspired performance of hitherto unknown brilliance from Duncan McGilligan gave him the well deserved “Man of the Match” award.

e Tankards were up next against a Club Scorpions side who clearly fancied their chances of giving the SCC a good hiding. How wrong they were! e Tankards were all over them in the opening half, hassling and harrying and putting some superb moves together. Chris Harkins and Oliver Rey were simply outstanding as a half-back pairing and kept the whole team on the front foot.

e forward pack dominated with Rishi and Marc Lansonneur impressive in the front row, locks Matt Love and Sam Sharpe breaking the gain-line time and time again, ad back rowers Tim Harris and Andrew Starkey ferocious at the breakdown. Four rst half tries from Chris Harkins (2), Sam Flint and Raj Sankaran to a Club penalty nished the game as a contest and the Tankards cantered to a comfortable 29-3 win by adding a brilliant 80m interception try by Raj. Having beaten HKFC for the last two years, the SCC 1st XV were quietly condent that despite the Singapore season being another two months away, another passionate eort would be enough to see them through against the fancy dans from HKFC. It was not to be. Whilst nobody could fault the eort and the ght from the SCC, we were beaten by a superior team on the day in terms of tness, preparation and game plan.

Every mistake was punished – on a couple of occasions with the SCC pounding the try-line, the ball was turned over and the winger ran the whole length of the eld to score. It was a great lesson to learn, and with several players to come back, the 1st XV will be a lot better for the experience.

With the score 32-3 at halime, the SCC battled gamely in the second half, skipper Simon Etheredge leading from the front. But with the line-out all over the place, we never really won enough balls to put any sustained pressure on the opposition and Club eventually touched down in the last ve minutes for the only score of the half. Final score 39-3.

A tremendous weekend culminated in an all-day brunch in memory of those lost in Bali and how we suered on Monday. Quite how so many made the Sunday night ights is anybody’s guess. All in all, a great weekend for SCC Rugby. Kids from under 5 years old up to aged 12 running out onto the eld at the HKFC Stadium in the Black and Gold was a sight to see. ree hard fought senior matches. e youngest SCC player on the eld at the weekend was 4 years old, the oldest was aged 59. A fabulous testament to rugby at the SCC and a tribute to the eight players who went down in Bali.

SOCCER REFLECTIONSArticle by Graham Dickson | Convenor: Graham Dickson

It will very soon be the holiday season and I wanted to start by wishing all SCC Members the very best for the Christmas and New Year holidays. My very best wishes to all players in the Section and to the sta at the SCC who support our activities.

e First Team and a Veterans team will be playing in HK on 9 November at the HKFC and the McPherson Trophy will be up for competition. Our teams will be competitive and let’s see what they can do as we are the holders of this trophy at present.

e First Team have started the new Cosmopolitan League very well and are presently top of the table aer six matches. Owen is getting the team in shape and they have training twice a week to keep in trim.

e SCC Tigers who play on Sundays are managed by Richard Pugh and Anthony Houlahan and have started the ESPZEN League well and are unbeaten in this new season. ey deserve a lot of credit for bringing together a strong side and grooming players for the First Team.

Michael Drake has taken over as Manager of the Saturday Strollers side in the Equatorial Football League Division 1 and the team consists of many of our better Veterans players primarily over the age of 35. e Strollers are also unbeaten and they play just before the First Team at 3.00pm on Saturdays at Dempsey.

e Dempsey facilities have seen the birth of SCC weekend soccer teams and the grounds are now in pristine condition. It is a pleasure to play there and call it our home. ere is a stray

ginger cat that has appeared there and it is being fed by Ronnie and looked aer by the groundsmen. We are going to call the cat Tiger aer the Sunday team and you are all welcome to bring it some food when you go down to Dempsey.

e Soccer Academy is moving along nicely under Owen Monaghan’s tutelage and representatives from Chelsea were down at Dempsey recently to take a look at the programme and hopefully some kind of tie up arrangement can be sorted out and we can produce the next 50 Million Pound Superstar for e Blues.

e midweek social teams are playing regularly at Dempsey and the irds, Lions and Pads all have large squads who contribute signicantly to the Club’s drink bills.

One issue that has been raised recently surrounds selection for the midweek social sides and the weekend competitive sides. e Club grants Members the right to play a game of football each week by assigning active players to a midweek social squad.

e respective Captains have been notied of the social squads and select their players accordingly as has been the tradition for years. Selection for the weekend competitive teams is an entirely dierent matter and should be viewed separately. If you are selected for the weekend teams it is because of your ability and you should feel privileged you may be getting more than the one game the Club grants you to play. e respective Captains know the Rules which are not complicated and let’s just get on with playing the beautiful game.

e Section has also issued guidelines around the granting of Sports Memberships and any transgressions of these Rules may subject the respective Member to lose his status as a Sports Member.

Finally, we have commenced early discussions with Harry Redknapp and would really like to try and get him to Singapore. Maybe as our guest for the 2013 Soccer Sixes? See you next year!

FRIENDLY MATCHESIn August we hosted the Jakarta State team who were in Singapore for training before the Indonesian National Championships. We managed to assemble a good group of players to provide a stern test for their players. is was followed by a visit of the Japanese Combined Universities team. ey had a large group of players though of a lower standard. Many of our regular Section Members turned up for the friendly.

ORANGE BOWL VS HOLLANDSE (AWAY)– SATURDAY, 1 SEPTEMBERis event was inaugurated last year and being good hosts we narrowly lost. It was important that we rectied this by bringing the trophy back to SCC. As is tradition (established aer one year), Hollandse determine how many players they can muster and we try and match them for standard.

In this instance they gathered a squad of 18 and then bitterly complained when they saw the team that we were proposing. Mutters of whitewash, or the Dutch equivalent, were traversing the wires as we did our best to encourage players from past eras to turn out on the day. We even produced our own Dutchman Pieter Van Calcar whose last squash match was a distant daydream. Eventually Hollandse accepted our line up, predicting a 13-5 result against.

As it turned out SCC lost the rst ve matches before registering a win and were 6-3 down at half time. However, fortune did not smile on us as Rhonda Koh lost two tie breakers and Simon Brown went down 2-1 having won the rst and so we saw the trophy slip away once again losing eventually 10-8.

Hollandse were excellent hosts (undoubtedly helped by their victory) and we are certain not to fail three times in a row. Whatever protests they present, they are sure to be undone when they visit next year.

ASHES VS BRITISH CLUB (HOME) – SATURDAY, 8 SEPTEMBERHaving lost the previous weekend, we were anxious not to lose the Ashes in this annual event that is in its 11th year. British Club volunteered 14 players and once again we tried to match them. is proved quite dicult with many of our lower grade players being unavailable.

is time we started much better and had a commanding lead of 6-1 at half time. ese matches are scored on a similar basis to the Ryder Cup so there is always a possibility of teams winning the remaining matches, although this is unlikely.

e nal result was a convincing 11-3 win. e best match of the aernoon was the number one match between Ben Nicholson (SCC) and Charlie omas (BC). e match went down to the wire with both players having match points. Eventually Charlie managed to win the two consecutive points needed to win.

Most players stayed for the social aerwards and a good time was had by all.

ANNUAL POT GAMES – SATURDAY, 29 SEPTEMBERWe played our counterparts from Tanglin Club in the annual match between the clubs. e match comprises seven ties with format depending on the host – seven singles when SCC hosted and four singles and three doubles when Tanglin hosted.

We expected a close aair as we sneaked a 4-3 win when we last played in Tanglin. Tanglin drew rst blood, winning the rst singles. We levelled when we won the second singles before trailing again when Tanglin won the rst doubles.

We levelled with a win in the third singles and went ahead aer snatching the fourth singles. Just when we thought the tide had nally turned in our favour, we stood at ve match points down in the fourth set in the second doubles. Fortunately we somehow managed to save ve match points to level the match before winning the h to seal the overall win for SCC.

Not surprisingly, Chris Pong, our wily doubles player, ably assisted this time by the sprightly Tim Soh, was party to the turnaround just as he was two years ago. Our nal doubles pair provided the icing on the cake when they dominated the nal doubles match.

Overall a close match in which we were glad to come away winners. We hope to carry on this winning tradition when we host Tanglin next year!

Novak Djokovic recently proved at the Beijing Open in early October that tennis and tennis players can be cool. Upon receiving his trophy and his prize money, he thrilled the crowd by dancing to the famous Korean “Gangnam Style” hit with the ball kids.

Back here in Singapore, you won’t see the SCC tennis team dancing “Gangnam Style” on the grass courts just yet but here are some events and activities you can look forward to at the Club.

ANNOUNCING THE NEW SCC JUNIORTENNIS ACADEMYe SCC Junior Tennis Academy has been formed at the Club recently. e Academy provides tennis lessons to people of all skill levels and age, starting from 4 years old. Group sessions will take place on weekends on the Club’s hard courts.

One of the coaches leading the training programme is Dennis Simsek. Hailing from Vancouver, Dennis played on the ATP Tour aer a very successful junior tennis career. His tennis and coaching career has seen him working with top players and travelling to exotic locations like Turkey, Cuba and the Bahamas. Dennis is looking forward to the challenge of making the SCC Asia’s destination for great tennis.

His tennis journey will be an inspiration to many but we’re sure that he’ll have a thing or two to learn from our seasoned veterans about playing on the grass courts of the SCC! For coaching enquiries, please call 98255764.

THE RETURN OF THE SCC PREMIERTENNIS TOURNAMENT 2013Get ready for an exciting 2013 tennis season at the SCC this January as we welcome to the green, green grass of SCC some of the world’s most talented players. ese are the players on the senior tour that Roger Federer probably watched while growing up.

e 2013 tournament highlight will feature tennis greats like Ilie “Nasty” Nastase, funny man Mansour Bahrami, the dramatic Henri Leconte and our very own honorary Club Member – Vijay Amritraj. All these men had a remarkable career in tennis.

Inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame, Ilie Nastase was one of few players to have won more than a hundred ATP titles during his career. Vijay Amritraj, now a familiar face and voice on ESPN STAR Sports, was a top player in the 1970s. To top it o, Henri Leconte and Mansour Bahrami are set to thrill on the grass courts with plenty of drama and French bravado.

Watch this space for more on the Tournament in the coming months. For queries or to volunteer your help for the tournament, please contact Tennis Convenor Matt Dabbs at [email protected].

INTER-CLUB DOUBLES LEAGUEe inter-club doubles league is underway with the Ladies A, Men’s A, B and C team doing hard battle against other clubs in Singapore. At printing time, news is on the street that the Ladies have made it to the semi-nals of the tournament with a strong 4-1 win-loss margin, beating teams like Tanglin Club, British Club and the Singapore Schools Sports Council. Both the semi-nals and nals will be held at the Kallang Tennis Centre late October and early November.
