One affected business is Jwayelani butchery which has lost customers due to the pickpocketing and mug- ging, said Jwayelani butchery man- ager Donovan Gabriel. He said that he has witnessed some of the incidents where a group of people attack indi- viduals and rob them off their cell- phones and bags. Gabriel said that there is a group of six males who are sometimes ac- companied by a woman. He said that their targets are the individuals who are busy on their cellphones or grant beneficiaries collecting their money from Jwayelani. “They are able to see them through the glass door of the shop. They follow a person who is busy on a cellphone. One of them will block the victim from the front and one will block from the back. After that the phone or bag is gone and they just disappear. This is not only affect- ing the people who end up being vic- tims but it’s affecting the business. “I had customers who would come for groceries but that is history now. Peo- ple only come in for small items such as cold drinks. I have lost customers as people are scared to come to this part of town. “No one wants to come to a place that is dangerous. Their targets are pupils, old women and men and espe- cially those on their cellphones,” he said. Gabriel said that there is one Safe City camera which is not helping as the street vendors have blocked it. “One thing that might help is the visibility of the police. Police are never here, it was only one occasion where I saw the police”, he told Echo. A streetvendorwhoaskednottonamed said incidents of pickpocketing and mugging happen in front of them. “We see everything and we no longer shout if we see them doing it. They have threatened to stab us and we have no choice but to ignore every- thing. It’s scary and it’s happening everyday,” she said. Captain Thulani Zwane said that the theft of handbags and the snatch- ing of cell phones in that area do occur fromtimetotime. Hesaidregularfoot and vehicle patrols are done in the ar- ea. “This includes the area around Jwayelani Butchery. We are not aware that businesses lost customers as the same area has the highest pe- destrian traffic in the cit,” he said He said the camera issue will be reported to Safe City and the Msun- duzi municipal manager. >> Pickpocketing in the city affects business The pavement in Church street where daylight pick- pocketing is high. DR FELICITY COUGHLAN

IN a world of instant gratifica-tion, themonth to sixweeks setaside for the Matric exams re-

quires a tenacity fromschool leav-ingyoungadults forwhich the restof their education had not neces-sarily prepared them.

Therelative freedomof thispe-riodcanbecounter-productive, asstudentsgiveupthesecuritycreat-ed by a routine that others man-aged. Particularly as they pass thehalfway mark in terms of paperswritten, the allure of the impend-ingbreakand thecelebrationscaneasily distract young people.

In addition, anxiety or despairabout papers that did not go wellcan undermine the determinationto stay focused.

AsmanyschoolsnowalsoallowGrade 10 and 11 students to study

at home, the students and theirfamilies have good first-handknowledge based on previousyears of how well the student isable to sustain (ornot) the self-dis-cipline needed.

That knowledge should resultin strategies to keep the focus forthenextthreeweeks.Thesestrate-gies include the obvious, such as astudy timetable, but also sched-uled reviews of progress and pro-ductive opportunities to engagewith peers on progress. Youngadultsneedtheirpeers,andacom-plete ban on this interaction willlead to many wasted hours usingsocial media and other communi-cation tools to stay in touch.

“As the list of subjects you stillneedtowritebecomesshorterandshorter, don’t be tempted into re-laxing too soon,” says Dr Felicity

Coughlan, Director of the Inde-pendent Institute of Education.

“Stop stressing about the sub-jectsyou’vealreadywritten.Thereis nothing more you can do aboutthoseresults.Butretainyourfocusright to the end, especially for theso-called ‘easier’ subjects whichare often scheduled towards theend of the exam timetable,” shesays.

“Every paper counts and youhave to give your best right up tothe end.”

Coughlan reminds studentsthat selecting one or two subjectswhich may come easier to themwasadeliberatepartof theirstrat-egy four years ago - at that timethey included these subjects to getaccess to some relatively easy“points” to up their scores and im-prove their chances of access to

to do about the way you started. Now it is all about theway youwillfinish,” she says.

Coughlan says that in the nextthree weeks, matrics can keeptheir focus by:

>> Not looking back – what isdone cannot be changed and eachpaper shouldbe treatedas a standalone opportunity to do your best.

>>Ensuring that they stick to aschedule of eating healthy, andgettingenoughsleepandexercise.

>> Sticking to their studyscheduleandevenuppingtheantea little, byputting inanhouror twoextra to complete another mockpaper, for example.

“A few extra marks may wellmean thedifferencebetweenyourapplication for a position and thatofyourcompetitors in the jobmar-ket. It may also mean the differ-ence between being accepted intoyour course of choice or having tolook at alternatives. In a few days’time, there will be nothing moreyoucandoabout thematricmarksthat will accompany you through-out the rest of your life.

“Put in the time now and stickit out right until the end, andyou’llfind your focus and additional ef-fort will be the gift that keeps ongiving throughout the rest of yourlife.”

courses. That strategy should notbe abandoned now.

Muggings in Church street hurt businessSHOPPERS in Church street need tobe vigilant when walking past thenew Selgro Spar. Pickpockets arerife and they work in groups of twoto three adult males, sometimesaccompanied by a female. Theirmodus operandi is simple: find theunsuspecting individual who’s busyon their cellphone, follow them andbump into them. Next thing youknow, your phone, bag or wallet isgone. This is also not good for thebusinesses in upper Church Street

as many shoppers don’t want toventure anywhere close. They easilytargetwomen, oldmenorwomenand those who look vulnerable inpublic. The Safe City cameras aren’ta great deal of help as well, as manyof the hawkers have blocked thecameras views of what happens onthe pavement.Visible policing is a total zero so thismakes it easier for these thugs tooperate. This is ‘heaven’ for them asthey go about their business with

no cares in the world. What can bedone to eradicate or lessen thethreat of getting mugged, robbedor swindled in this area?I would like the following to bedone to educate the public:1. The media should run a story on

this, with eyewitness accounts,2. More visible policing in this area,3. Educate the public to be on the

lookout for these thugs,4. Run a survey and calculate the

amount of money lost in this ‘business’ daily.

From the eraof consultantsto socialagencies

IT IS fascinating to observe the lat-est trend in South Africa. The eraof consultants seems tobecoming

toanendandweareembracingsocialagencies e.g. NGOs, NPOs, founda-tions co-operatives, etc.

Saying consultants are no longertherewouldnot bea true reflectionofreality. They are still with us, andrightfully so. Like many people outthere, I remember registering a com-munications consultation companynot too long ago and gave it a nicename.Butdiditeverdoanything?No.Of course I am not the only one – it isquite common not to be able to getbusiness.

At least I am not complaining be-cause I have had a government job.But for those who did not have a job,I do not even wish to imagine how itis like to have a registered businessoperation and you do not get even asingle contract, not even a once-offthing.

Then in came the era of socialagencies. They have always beenthere. But I just think that theyarebe-coming an in thing nowadays. Wehave always had NGOs, NPOs andFoundations in our midst, but thesedays the buzz word is register a non-profit making entity and raise funds.

Perhapsthereasonthemajorityofthepeople of this country didnot reg-ister non-profit making entities was

because theydidnothave the capaci-ty to raise money from overseas do-nors. Indeed it has been a SouthAfri-can culture to have such organiza-tions run by mainly white folksbecause they had what it takes to se-cure the money – proposal writingskill, connections and contacts allover the world.

It is nice to see the emergence ofthe black-run NPO, despite the chal-lenges associated with managerialcapacity, appropriate competencieslike accountability, transparency, openness, team-work, all of whichamounts to credible and effectiveservice delivery.

The rise of the social agency inSouth Africa is long overdue. Nowthat government is partnering withsuch structures in its ongoing searchfor solutions tounlocking factors thatstifle service delivery unnecessarily,

there is a reason to be optimistic de-spite inherent weaknesses i.e. cor-ruption or self-interest.

The rise of the social agent in theUnited States is associated with im-proved servicedeliverybecause suchpeople-driven structures have thenecessary flexibility to reach thepeo-pleontheground.There isampleevi-dence to prove that these formationsblend with communities and impactonthelivesof thepeopleatgrassrootslevelmorepotentlythanthestate-runprogramsthatarecoordinatedbyim-personal and inefficient governmentofficials who may have ulterior mo-tives e.g. bribery, nepotism and fa-voritism.

This arms-length approach ingovernmentpolicy, especiallywhenitcomes toorganisations thatdealwithsocial ills, is to be welcomed and infact applauded.

It is true that theremaynotbeade-quate resources to allocate, but asmuch as possible competent people, including retired professionals, would do society a great service bystarting or joining such operations inthe interest of effective service deliv-ery.

Like in the United States, thechurchesmust continually be seen tobe driving such social agencies be-causetheyareexpectedtoserveGod’speople in a manner that the originalfounder of the Christian church, theLordJesusChristhimself, wouldhavedone.

It is great to see churches servingthepoor, feeding thehungry, the sick, the lame, including helpless old peo-ple, as well as transforming prosti-tutes, findingshelter for thehomelessandengaging in job-creationendeav-ors that will benefit the members ofthe church and the broader commu-

nities they work in.Iknowthatitisdifficulttodealwith

greed, opportunism and corruption, but it is possible to do good work de-spite the limitations of the humancondition. Leaders must not be em-barrassed when they are asked to beanswerable and account for their ac-tions, decisions and the manner inwhich they manage resources. It ispartof runningagoodbusinessoper-ation, and it often results to growthand success.

It isbettertotryandfailthantofoldyour hands and do nothing. I havegreat respect for many organic intel-lectuals I know of people out therewho may have understandable hu-man flaws and managerial discrep-ancies, but they have what it takes tostand up and make a contribution tothe development of society.

SimphiweMkhize writes in hispersonal capacity.

IT IS NICE TO SEE THE EMERGENCE OF THEBLACKRUN NPO, DESPITE THE CHALLENGESASSOCIATED WITH MANAGERIAL CAPACITY, APPROPRIATE COMPETENCIES LIKE ACCOUNTABILITY, TRANSPARENCY, OPENNESS, TEAMWORK,ALL OF WHICH AMOUNTS TO CREDIBLE ANDEFFECTIVE SERVICE DELIVERY.

own Dumi “Mkokstad” at the weekend. He scooped the best gospel song in the 6th

SABC Crown gospel awards that were held onSunday.

Nzimande who is affectionately known as‘Mkokstad’isoriginallyfromMountAyliff intheEastern Cape but currently lives in Oribi.

His song titled ‘Mbize’ was chosen amongthose of gospel legends Andile kaMajola,Thobekile Mkhwanazi and Mxolisi Mbethe.

Speaking to Echo, the second year law stu-dent at the University of KwaZulu Natal said:

“This is a great achievement formeas I startedsinging at only eight years old.

“I would stand outside shops and sing tomakea livingasmyparentswereunemployed.Thisawardisadooropener formeandit isalsoa message to my fans that I am back.

“I decided to putmy studies on hold for thisyear to focus on the album and here I am. I amgrateful to everyone who supported me”.

Nzimande says hewrote the song after los-ing his producer Big Boy Mlangeni. “I was sohurt andworried but a vision came that God iswith me at all times, in the morning, eveningand night. “The song is about restoring hopeamong those who have lost it. If you pray withfaith and believe that God will help you, it willhappen,” he said.

He plans to go back to school next year.
