THEwounds onBilaz Asan’s bodymay behealing, but he says the road to forgivinghis attackers is going to be a long one.

The Malawian father of four was beatensenselesslastWednesday,allegedlybytwomenwho forced him to strip naked, soaked him inpaint thinnersandthensprayedhisentirebodywith white enamel car paint.

Althoughheisgratefulthatthetwomenhavebeen arrested for the attack, he said he willnever forget the torture and humiliation heendured, allegedly at their hands.

The 37-year-old panel beater saideverything was going smoothly at work untiltwo men walked into his place of employmenton Violet Road in Northdale.

“Therewasadisputeoverpaymentandtheybeatupthemechanicwhowasworkingontheirvehicle, and then turned to me,” alleged Asan,speaking from his cramped room in Haniville.

He said he was confused over why theaxe-wielding men allegedly began hitting himall over his body.

“Iwascryingandscreaming forhelp, butnoone came to help me,” said Asan.

The beating continued and just when hethoughthisattackersweredone, theyallegedlyforced him to take his clothes off.

“TheypouredpaintthinnersonmybodyandI felt like I was on fire. They then went for theair compressor and sprayed paint all over mybody,” he said.

A neighbour heard the commotion came toassist, but he too was allegedly beaten.

“I tried to run away, I even climbed on theroof, but they came after me and continued tobeat me,” said Asan.

Anotherneighbourcame toassist and that’swhen “I ran for my life”, said Asan.

He bumped into his colleague SamAbdulsamad (30), who rushed him toNorthdale Hospital, where he was treated forhis injuries.

“The nurses tried to remove the paint, butthey couldn’t, so they told me to go home.

“Whenwe got home, Sam came and helpedme scrape the paint off using his nails. It waspainful, but I couldn’t cry because I amaman,”said Asan.

Askedabouthowhe felt abouthis attackers,Asansaid: “Itwasanear-deathexperienceandI want them to be punished for what they did.”

Man in court for spray paint attack

A PIETERMARITZBURG man accused ofbeating up a Northdale mechanic’s assistantand then spray painting his entire body withwhite enamel car paint appeared in court onFriday.

Avikar Lutchman (27), who faces charges ofassault, assault with intent to cause grievousbodily harm and attemptedmurder, cut a calmfigure when he appeared in the Pietermaritz-burg Magistrate’s Court.

Lutchman was remanded in custody withthematter postponed to January 22 for furtherinvestigation. State prosecutor Mxolisi Hodisaid the state intends opposing bail.

Lutchman’s attorney, Kameel Jagernath,said: “My client has intentions of pleading notguilty. Hewill co-operate with the state andweknow there is still one suspect that still needs tobe arrested.”

The second alleged attacker appearedbriefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’sCourt on Tuesday.

Shadrack Wayne Naidoo (28) faced similarcharges to his co-accused, Lutchman.

The twomenwill bothappear in court againon January 22 on charges of assault,aggravated assault and attempted murder.

Magistrate Ntsoaki Ndawondwe told thecourt thatbothmenwill remain inpolice custo-dy until then.

KingGoodwillZwelithini’ssonPrinceNhlanganiso Zulu.

The prince (41), who is the eldestson of Queen Buthle MaMathe of theDlamahlahla palace, is set to marryPietermaritzburg-born WandileMkhize (28).

A traditionalprenuptial ceremonyof Umembeso was held at Mkhize’sBisley homeat theweekend.Mkhize,a communications officer at theCo-operative Governance andTraditional Affairs (Cogta)Department, has been in a romanticrelationship with the prince since2012.

A large white marquee waserected last week and by Saturday,vehicles had parked behind eachother for a stretch of about threekilometres on Alexandra Road.

He said the couple conducted anengagement ceremony in front ofabout500guests in theabsenceof thegroom’s father, the king, who hadother commitments.

“Thecouplepromised towedeachother. They are so in love and can’twait to get married,” said Zulu.

He said members of the royalfamily showed the Mkhize family afew dance moves.

“Wedancedandsangandshowedthem how it is done. It was reallybeautiful,” he said.

Zulu said a date for the weddinghad not been set.

“Remember that he is the king’sson and we need to follow protocol.

“We also need to make sure thatthe king is available for theceremony,” explained Zulu, whoadded that the royal family wasexcited and ready to acceptanother bride.

The bride’s youngerbrother, Chief SiboneloMkhize, said the Mkhizeroyal family was alsoexcited for Wandile.

“They met random-ly but their loveblossomed intosomething muchmore serious and werealised that ourfather and the kingwere very goodfriends when they were in highschool,” said Mkhize.

INFLATION and the rising cost of providingquality tertiary education has forced someKwaZulu-Nataluniversities todriveupfees

beyond 10%.University of KwaZulu-Natal increased

both tuition and accommodation fees by 12%this year, and the sharp rise will see parentsforking out once-off registration payments ofR3 750 for courses and an additional R2 750fee for students requiring accommodation.

University spokesperson Lesiba Seshokasaid the increment was inspired by carefulconsideration of the social circumstances ofstudents and wider consultation withuniversity stakeholders.

“Inflation has negatively affected theallocation to the university from the state,makingthecurrenttuitionfeespaidbystudentsinadequate,” she said.

“It is imperative that adequate financialresources are available to ensure that ourdegrees remain highly competitive andrespected globally.”

The institution received more than 90 000applications for the 8 400 available spaces inthe undergraduate academic programmes.

It provides accommodation for 12 086students at on-campus and off-campusresidences.

“Each year there is always more demandthansupplyforon-campusaccommodation.Tohelp curb thematter, the university makes useof private accommodation in and around ourcampuses.”

Unisa spokesperson Martin Ramotshelasaid they received 168 400 applications lastyear, made up of 93 739 new applicants, and74 661 returning students.

“From applications received, 89 046 metthe minimum requirements. All theseapplicants will be accommodated during thecurrent registration period, provided they stillsatisfy the admission requirements.”

The universities said students can registeronline to avoid long queues.

CentralApplicationOffice (CAO) spokesper-son George van der Ross said they processed130 480 applications for the four KZNinstitutions.

Social work programmes proved popular,receivingthemostapplications,whileinforma-tion technology received the fewest.

Nearly all courses received moreapplications than in 2014.

UKZN received the largest chunk ofapplicants, with 87 493 forms alreadyprocessed.

TheDAhasurgedMinisterofHigherEduca-tion and Training Blade Nzimande to requestemergency funding from Treasury to aid theNational Student Financial Aid Scheme(NSFAS), to support incoming first-yearstudents.

Previously, the department said it wouldprovide R10,2 billion this year in fundingthrough NSFAS to tertiary institutions.

However, Professor Belinda Bozzoli, DAshadow minister of Higher Education, said itwould not be enough.

“Weestimate thatanadditionalR1 billion in

emergency funding will be needed to supportthose students who achieved bachelor passesto go to university,” she said.

As students are desperate to find places attertiary institutions, the IFP warned first-timeentrantstobewaryofbogushigher learningin-stitutions.

IFP MP Mkhuleko Hlengwa said studentsand parents must do thorough backgroundchecksof institutions “makingveryboldprom-ises”.

“They are nothing but fly-by-night institu-tionshell bent on takingadvantageof poor anddesperate people.”

Bullet narrowlymisses man inScottsvilleattemptedhijacking

A PIETERMARITZBURG man is still inshock after a bullet narrowly missedhim in an attempted car hijackingincident at the weekend.

Ntuthuko Ngubane (33) ofSouthgate had parked in ConnaughtRoad in Scottsville when he wasapproached by two unknown menwho tried to hijack his car at about2.30am on Saturday.

Ngubane, who works in theconstruction industry, said one of the

men hit the driver’s window with astone, shattering the glass.

“They tried to pull me out of thecar, but I managed to reverse anddrove off. They fired one shot and italmost hit me.

“It hit the windscreen and thesafety belt. I was lucky it didn’t hit me,”he said.

He said it was unclear whether thesuspects had been following him asthey had no car.

Ngubane then drove to AlexandraRoad police station to report the

matter.Police spokesperson Colonel Jay

Naicker said the police are investigating a case of attempted murder andno empty cartridge was found on thescene. The motive for the attack wasunknown and no arrest had beenmade, he said.

The 18-year-old from the ruralMaqongqo has since become thepride of the village after obtainingA’sin Zulu, life orientation, businessstudies and economics.

Following a car accident towardstheendof2013that lefthimwitha legand head injury, Ndlovu was in andoutofhospital inhismatricyearashesuffered from migraines.

Ndlovu hopes to study for a BA

degree in international studies.Speaking to Echo about his

achievement, he said: “Aftersustainingahead injury, Iwasscaredthat my brain had been affectedbecause I had severe headaches. Iwas in and out of hospital, but I usedevery chance that I got to catch upwith my studies.

“For me, studying for my matricyearcouldneverbetooearly. Istartedat thebeginningof theyear.Atschool,we did not havemany resources, butwith the help of the teachers, I usedthefewthatwehadtomyadvantage.”Advising other matric pupils fromunderprivileged communities, hesaid: “Your background should notdetermine who you will be in life. Inlife, there will always be people who

will bemore privileged than you are,so instead of complaining, you mustusethelittle thatyouhavetobewhereyou want to be.

“Listen attentively in class and donot be afraid to ask for help fromteachers whilethere is stilltime.

Lastly,what-ever pain youendure, do notbe caught uptoomuch inselfpity, but ratheruse those cir-cumstances tomotivate your-self.”

Facelift for CAPTURE SITETHAMSANQA MAGUBANE

ALIFE-CHANGING experience.That’s what has been

promised future visitors to theNelson Mandela capture site inHowick, which is set to receive aR75 million facelift and will boast atunnel under the R103 linking thecurrent exhibition and sculpture sitewith the capture sitenear the railwayline.

Amulti-purpose centre estimatedto cost around R45 million is alreadyunder construction at the historicsite. Another estimated R30 millionwill be spent over the next few yearson developments including theconstruction of the tunnel.

The multi-purpose centre isexpected to be completed by the endof this year.

SitemanagerChristopherTill saidthat the renovations are part ofchanges to ensure visitorsunderstood not just the history ofNelsonMandela,buthishistoryinthecontext of KwaZulu-Natal.

The foundation of the centre hasbeen laid and the concrete pillarshave already been erected.

The centre is a significantstructure measuring at least 30metres in length.

The construction site is protectedfrom the prying eyes of the public bycorrugated iron sheeting.

Constructionworkershadbeenonleaveandwerebackonsitethisweek.

Till said the centre would educatevisitors and eradicate myths.

“Many people still believe thatMandela was arrested at Liliesleaf[farm] when the ANC leaders were

arrested,andothersthinkthathewasarrested on a train somewhere.

“When the centre is complete,therewill beanexhibitioncentre thatwill deal with the history of Mandela…

“The centre will also have avisitors’ area that could be used tohold conferences,” he said.

Till said an indigenous gardenwould lead to the sculpture, so thevisitors could “feel” Mandela’s longwalk to freedom.

“The facility is going to be builtto accommodate the tourists thatwe get here. We get busloads of localand international tourists and thiswill also encourage those passing byto come in … Children could bebrought here to learn aboutMandela,” he said.

Till said they received between400 and 500 tourists per day in thewake of Mandela’s death.

“The popularity of this site has

grown and we continue to seehundreds of people coming here ev-ery day.

“The KZN Department ofEconomic Development has chosenthis as their flagship site. Recentlythey brought a tourist buswhichwasdesigned with an image of thesculpture on its side … we want tomake the heritage site an excitingplace,” he said.

Till said they do not want tocommercialisethesitebecausethat isnot what Mandela would havewanted.

He said there was much landaround the site and it would be usedfor visitors, music concerts andenjoyment by families.

There would be an exhibitionabout Mandela including a replica ofhis cell at thecapturesiteplaqueneartherailwaylineontheothersideoftheR103.

“There will be a tunnel dug to

main capture site.”Till said the current exhibition

centre would be used as an arts andcrafts centre and would help exposelocal artists to the local and interna-

tional visitors coming to the site.The renovations were being done

in increments and would becompleted over a period of severalyears.

ILLEGAL electricity connectionsclaimed three lives inPietermaritzburg last week, the

most recent beingMthobisiMokoenawho died in Copesville.

Mokoena (23) was electrocutedand died on the spot in the Swapoinformal settlement - less than a dayafter Nontobeko Mjoli (five) waselectrocuted at Jika Joe informalsettlement.

Mokoena’s sister, CeceliaMofokeng, said he had finishedwashinghis clothes andattempted tohang them on what he thought wasthe washing line.

“He thought the illegal wireswerea washing line and he was struckdownand died,” saidMofokeng,whofought back tears and struggled totalk.

Mokoenawas new to the area andhad started renting a shack there lastweek.

He was still clutching the wireswith both hands and facing the sky,with his wet washing a metre awayfrom him. Both poles holding up thewires that struck him down hadcollapsed.

Scores of shack dwellers, some ofwhom had babies on their backs,surrounded the body in disbelief.

At the scene, ER24 spokespersonAndrew Rogers said: “He sufferedburnmarksonhishandsandarm.Wehave to wait for Eskom to switch offthe power. We can’t do anythingbecause we don’t know which wiresare live.”

He added that the state of wiringin the area was terrible and it’s verydangerous.

NONTOBEKO Mjoli (5) fromtheJikaJoeinformal settlementis the latest victim to be electrocutedby livewires connected illegally.

The incident happened last weekWednesday at the back of theinformal settlement near the pittoilets,whereMjoli isbelievedtohavetripped over live wires.

Mjoli’s aunt, Matsepang Dlamini,said that the deceased had spentthe day with her guardian while hermother was at work.

“Every morning, her motherwould leave her at a guardian’shouse because her day care is stillclosed. Every morning after hermother has gone to work shewould come knocking on my door toask if her relatives had woken up.

“On the day she died, she nevercame knocking. I thought shehad gone to playwith other children.I was not that worried because Iknew that someonewas lookingafterher.

“Around 1pm, someone came tomy house and told me that he sawNontobeko near the pit toilets. Iquickly put my shoes on and headedto the scene. I saw her body andcouldn’t stop crying. It was painful. Ididnotevenknowthattherewerelivewiresby thepit toilets. Shemusthavetrippedover thenakedwiresbecausethey are not easily noticeable” saidDlamini.

She said that Mjoli had left herguardian’s house to visit the toilet.She said that her shoes were foundmeters away from the scene.

Mjoli’s family is still busy withfuneral plans and she will be laid torest this Saturday.

Mjoli had been a frequent visitorof thenon-profit organization,MamaNtombi’s Community Projects(MNCP).

The organisation deals with thedevelopment of orphaned andvulnerablechildrenindisadvantagedcommunities in Pietermaritzburg.

MNCP’s programme managerSandra Pillay said, “This child hasbeen coming to our programme. Webought the family groceries andwe prayed with them. We aresaddened by what has happened,”she said.

“She was a lively person and wewillmiss her somuch,” said Dlamini.

TheMaritzburgFever reporter vi-sited the Jika Joe informalsettlement with the MNCPrepresentatives.

Due to prominent illegalconnectionsatalmosteverycornerofevery shack, one had to treadcarefully when walking between theshacks.

Jika Joe community leaderThembinkosiMagagula said that it issad to note that last year, anotherchild was electrocuted at the samespot where Mjoli’s body was found.He said that proper housing is theonly answer to solving illegalconnections.

“We do not know when illegalconnections will end. A lot of peoplehave lost their lives in theprocessandit is even sadder when it is youngchildren that die.

“However, older people are alsovictims. This applies mostly to thosewho are visitors and who are notinformedabout illegal connectionsatJika Joe.”

HE an artist who took his performancesat school assembly seriously, and thoseare the unforgettable moments about

Sandile Khawula who has just dropped his 12track gospel album.

The Port Shepstone songbird, who hasmade Pietermaritzburg his second home, hasa newalbum called Isimanga Somuntu,whichmeans an “Amazing Person”.

Asked why he went with the name“Isimanga Somuntu’’, he said he refers to Godas an amazing Saviour who loves all peopleunconditionally, regardless of how theychallenge him through sin.

Khawula is a saved Christian and hestrongly believes in God.

“I started singing in primary school when Iwas inmy early grades. I use to perform in theschool assembly to entertain pupils andteachers. One of my favourite performanceswaswhenIsangasongbyChiccoThwala.That

iswhenIherealizedthatIhavegreatpotential,”he said.

In 2002, he decided to join the school choirwhich performed classical genre and that ishow his marriage with music started

His album is made up of 12 gospel tracks.“I promisepeople that theywill enjoy all the

tracks on the album. The album is out andpeople can get a copy by contacting mymanager, Lungile Dube.

“To furthermypassion inmusic, I amdoinga diploma in Jazzmusic with the University ofKwaZulu-Natal (Howard College). I want toeducate the younger generation and motivatethem on why it is important to follow theirdreamsandpassion, and tonever giveupuntilthey reach what they have they aimed for,” hesaid.

Khawula has played the keyboard for thelikes of SfisoNcwane,MxolisiMbethe,ThulaniGa Ndlela, Thina Zungu and Amazing Gracejust to name a few.

The Africa Edition, says LandRover, builds on the legend thatis Defender, and “gives thefaithful the opportunity to own avehicle that not only has a uniquelook but also an array of featuresthat enhance its workmanlikepersona.”

The limited edition rolls nearly70 years of “hard-core, 4x4ingcapability into one unmistakeablepackage”.

All carry a Defender Africa logoon the sides and rear.

Mandela marathon winner to race in Mumbai on SundayBULWER-BORNThobaniChagwe,whobecamean instanthouseholdname after winning last year’sannual Mandela Day Marathon,will be pounding the streets ofMumbai on Sunday.

Last year, the Nkwezela boysurprised himself and other eliteathletes when he outpaced thewholepacktowinthepopularraceoutside Howick.

According to Chagwe, histraining ground was aroundMkhambathini late October(2014) and right up to the festiveseason.

“WedecidedtotrainaroundtheMkhambathiniareabecauseofthehills and quietness. In that area,wewereabletotrainwithoutbeingdisturbed.

“Around Mkhambathini, thetraining route is very challenging.It’s a good and safe area to stage a

marathon,” said Chagwe.Chagwe’s training partners

were the likes of Silindile Gubeseand S’thembiso Ntombela.

“We used to run 40km everymorningandweonlytrainedinthemorning,” he said.

Chagwesaidhewill be runningoutof thecountry for the first time,but is prepared to learn andcompete.

“I know it will be tough outthere. The conditions are totallydifferent to South Africa, but I amprepared togo thereandmakemypresence felt. I am going there tocompete with internationalathletes and also gain someexperience,” said Chagwe.

The Mandela Day Marathonreigning champion says hewill behappy to clock around 2hrs 15 orat least 2hrs 20 in Mumbai.
