We were grateful to have been able to hold a very successful Family Festival on 12 March before Covid-19 turned all of our lives upside down. Thank you to everyone who got involved in helping run the stalls and all the families who came along to support the evening and watch our wonderful young women perform.

Our Marist families were particularly hard hit by Covid-19 and during the eight weeks over lockdown, the PTFA distributed almost $15,000 worth of groceries to families who needed to a bit of extra support.

In June we were fortunate to receive a donation of 45 pallets of frozen food from McCains. This food was delivered to school on 4 June in a massive truck and transferred to a refrigerated container parked outside Raechelle’s office. With the assistance of St Mary’s Parish Foodbank, within a week all 45 pallets of food were distributed across Auckland to families in need. A special thanks to Warwick, Chris Judd, and Dianne McCardle for making that happen.

At our June meeting, the PTFA voted unanimously to carry on making funds available for groceries and other essential supplies to our Marist College families throughout winter. The PTFA is fortunate to be in a good position to be able to provide this support but our resources are, of course, finite. If anyone would like to support this initiative, you can follow the link below to purchase a virtual grocery voucher on the College’s Online Store. All donations received are tax deductible and will be used to fund groceries and other essential supplies to go to our Marist College families.

• A Family Feast - Hākari: Matariki is a special time when the whole family gets together to feast and give thanks. Try baking rewena (Māori bread) or star-shaped sugar cookies. (recipe: https://www.kiwifamilies.co.nz/articles/star-shaped-sugar-cookies/)

• A New Harvest - Kotinga: During the holidays start your very own vege patch! Matariki is a time to harvest the winter vegetables and prepare your vege garden for the new plants. Try planting radishes, lettuce and sugarsnap peas.

• Acknowledging the family - “Pinepine te kura, hau te kura”: Look through your family’s photo albums, learn about your whanau and remember those who have passed. Share family memories. Make sure you write them down so you will always remember these special stories.

• Crafts - Mahi toi: Make your own star craft wall hanging, make an origami star, weave a harakeke whetu (flax star), or make a window display of stars painted with glow in the dark colours.

• New beginnings - Nga timatanga hou: Create goals for the coming lunar year or renew your resolutions.

• Matariki Event- Whakanui: Attend the Matariki Festival on top of Mt Roskill (Pukewīwī/Winstone Park, 1129 Dominion Rd) on one of the upcoming Sundays (5 July and 12 July, 11am-2pm). Bring your own kite to fly and take part in the various activities including a guided walking tour, a kōauau making workshop, traditional games and sampling of kawakawa tea. Attend a session on Matariki at Stardome with your whanau and friends.

Year 7 French Three Little Piggies PlayAt the start of the term we were told we were going to be doing a play about “Les trois petits cochons” (The three little pigs) in French class.

Everyone practised a lot and we enjoyed using French with our classmates. We learnt French with catchy songs and hand actions, which were really cool! The class made lots of props and cool houses. Alodia personally thinks that the straw house was the best.

Yesterday, we performed our play in front of the class (all of us by heart!), and it was amazing to use another language fluently! At the end of the day, it was so cool that I could have talked about it for ages.

FootballA well deserved 2:1 victory over St Cuthberts for the Marist Gold team. An exciting and action packed game up against some tough defense with our girls coming out with the win. Well done!

Awesome result tonight vs St Mary's. We won 9:3. With Millie scoring five goals, Ava two, Pippa one and Cadey scoring an awesome goal. Ava and Izzy showed great skills with setting up and assisting in the scoring of the goals. The player of the day was Cadey, with her goal keeping and then her goal in the second half.
