From the Deputy PrincipalTena koutou Parents and Guardians,

Another term is drawing to a close in a frenzy of reflection and revision, of planning for next year and planning for the end of this. The girls are very much engaged in these processes also - revising for the derived grade examinations in Week 10, reflecting on their successes and failures so far, planning for the external examinations and the holiday to follow and, of course, thinking about their choices for next year. Year 9 students have two option choices to consider, Year 10 have four, and Year’s 11 and 12 are choosing five each.

For Year 9 and 10 we have printed a Choices booklet. Years 11 and 12 can access this booklet online through the Marist website. So too can parents and caregivers. Please do take the opportunity to explore what is available at Marist College and where this might lead.

There is nothing so certain as change and a future we cannot predict, so our message to the girls continues to be to explore their own capabilities and interests as they develop. Below are the instructions on how to acess and use schoolpoint.

Kia pai tō rā whakatā. Nga mihi.

“During Term 1 I participated in a Gateway programme at The Warehouse in New Lynn, along with 7 others from Marist. We worked at the store over 10 Saturdays, doing a variety of tasks such as pricing and returns in different departments, but mostly learning about customer service. We were taught how to respond to customers in different situations and deal with different types of people. We also learned a lot about teamwork and helping each other. The best parts about it were learning new skills, getting things accomplished, feeling like you had achieved a lot in a day. The hardest part was putting yourself forward for something new, especially when you first start dealing with customers. At first it is surprising when the customers who come in treat you like you are an adult who works there and not someone who is just at school. It’s good when you are able to help them.” Melania Uhatafe-Tafa, Y12.“Along with other girls from Marist I completed a Gateway programme at The Warehouse in New Lynn in April. As well as gaining work experience we completed 22 credits at Level 2 relating to retail, customer service, personal presentation, teamwork, and safe work practices. After completing the course I was offered a part-time job and I have been working there since then. At first it was hard learning how to relate to and work with a real range of people most of whom are very different in age to me. I felt intimidated by others who are older than me, especially when I started actually working as a paid employee. When you are doing Gateway it’s a safe experience to learn because you know you can get help when you need it and you’re not thrown in at the deep end. It prepares you for what to expect and the bookwork we did was relevant to what we were doing in the store. Jill the tutor was really helpful with learning about what we needed to do to achieve the standards. I would recommend the course to other students.” Marijana Vincent, Y12.

Tournament WeekLast week the 1st XI football team participated in the Maurice Hulme tournament down in Rotorua. It was an amazing experience, full of football, fun and plenty of Marist Spirit. We achieved our primary goal of finishing in the top half and also received the Fair Play award which was a great way to end the week.

Shout-out to Ruby Stemson our captain for the season and Irina Marshall our goalie, as it was their last game ever playing in the Marist strip. Also a huge thank you to everyone who made our trip possible, Miss Finlay, David our coach and Mr and Mrs Baptist for making all the amazing food, and of course our parents. Marcella McGillivray,Y11

Marist Student Wins Coding CompetitionEarlier in the Year 10 Digital Tech class entered a programming competition in which students used Scratch to create a computer game around the theme ‘Clean up our oceans’.

One of our students, Rebecca Evans, won the year 9 and 10 category, earning herself a Sphero Robot and her school a Quadcopter Drone. Greg Adams from Interface Magazine delivered the prizes this week, and is interested in working with the school to provide further coding opportunities in future.
