Stage 5 Mathematics

Students this week have been learning life skills in Mathematics, particularly relevant to some of our students who have part time employment. Miss Singleton has been teaching students to read tax tables and to calculate taxable income figures, including net and gross incomes. Students have been practising calculating tax payable, as well as applying the various percentages relating to tax brackets.

Stage 4 Assessment Portfolios - Science

Stage 4 Science students have been learning about controlled experiments, identifying single variables to alter, whilst keeping all others consistent for validity. As part of their assessment, students are compiling reports on 5 experiments, to submit as a practical portfolio. Topics studied include:

Stage 5 Electricity – Skills Testers

Years 9 and 10 have used the last 4 lessons of Science to create their own skills testers. In preparing their skills testers, students related their knowledge of circuitry, controls and components, to make a functional electrical circuit to suit a purpose. Students were quite creative, coming up with their own versions of tracing wires, matching games and ‘Operation’ board games. They then completed a round robin of time trials to compete for prizes. Some excellent skill development and problematic thinking; Well done Stage 5!

Northern Daily Leader Kindy Kids

9/10 English Report

In English, my class has been learning about relationships in every form. From relationships on the big screen, between humans and technology, to relationships in novels. We have focused on the book Winter by John Marsden. Winter is a novel about a sixteen-year-old girl who needs to discover the truth about her parents’ death, and has to go back to her childhood home Warriewood, located in a town called Christie.

For this to happen, Winter (the main character) needs to discover her past and discover what truly happened between her and her mother. We have been studying all the different themes that are involved, including love, fear, connection, confidence, open communication and everything in between. For this, we have done a number of activities including consideration questions, revisions, comparing to other texts, analysing quotes, understanding what has happened between characters and having discussions about the book.

I recommend Winter because it can teach you lessons including: being open to people in your life and not doubting yourself because you never know what you can do unless you do it. It teaches us that our past doesn’t define who we are.

News from S1H

It is hard to believe it is already Week 7. S1H have established classroom routines and are working hard in all areas of their learning.

We are particularly enjoying our Unit of Inquiry this term “Past in the Present” as it has allowed us to explore the history of our local area. We have identified the significance of places such as, The Chinky-Chow Bridge, the silos and the viaduct and discussed why they should be preserved.

School Fences

Last Friday the Department of Education’s Asset Management Unit held a meeting for vendors applying to install the school’s security fence. The successful company will be informed this Friday. The company then will contact the school and talk about dates for installation. They will have 10 weeks to install the fences from this Friday.

When we receive notification of the plans, we will inform the surrounding residents of how the project will take place.

Stewart House

Donation Drive 2020

Donate $2.00 for a Chance to Win a $4,000 Family Holiday

Each year 1,700 public school children in need go to Stewart House from many parts of NSW and the ACT. We have had many children from Manilla Central School attend Stewart House over the years. During their stay, children are provided with optometric, dental and medical treatment, emotional support, as well as lots of fun activities and outings.

This is balanced with health and education programs and out of school activities to boost their self-esteem and to promote a healthier lifestyle.

Children attend Stewart House at no charge.

To keep the doors open for the children who depend on the Stewart House program, $4.5 million is needed to be raised per annum and every dollar raised helps change children’s lives.

You can help raise this much needed money by simply donating $2.00 and go into a draw for a chance to win a $4,000 family holiday. Envelopes have been sent home with primary students today. High school students wishing to enter may collect an envelope from the secondary office. Simply follow the directions on the envelope and return to either school office by Friday, 8th May to ensure we have entries to Stewart House in time for the draw.

Loki Adventures

On his first Wednesday mission to Primary school, Loki Godfrey Gallagher, teamed up with Jack Daley to work on a tricky maths question!

Despite feeling a little flat, Jack was happy to help Loki learn about working in the classroom. He helped him avoid chewing books and pens as well as not being distracted by general classroom noise. Jack did such a great job with him that Loki fell asleep.

Loki has been formally introduced to three classes at the Primary in Week 6 and will meet the other 3 classes this Wednesday. Loki is training to be a therapy dog to work alongside Susanne Gallagher, as a Chaplain with NSW Ambulance and in her Education Chaplaincy role.

More Loki adventures to come ... watch this space!

Manilla Show 13, 14 and 15th March 2020

We encourage all of our students to involve themselves in the Manilla Show. They can do this by entering in the cooking, art and craft, photography, pet show etc sections at the show. Our students have a proud history of getting involved and doing very well.

We have a group of 10 secondary students heading to the showground this Friday in order to set up the pavilion. It would be wonderful to have some volunteers on Sunday help out by taking down the artwork in the pavilion as well.

Our Primary Department will head to the showground this Friday to watch the Light Horse performance.

Year 10 Phones

In order to maximise learning conditions in the classroom and to stop inappropriate use of the phones, we have banned all Year 10 students from using their phone at school.

As with Years 7 to 9, Year 10 students are to hand their phones in during roll call and to collect them at the end of the day. Failure to do so will incur behaviour levels.

Positive Behaviour for Learning Term 1 Week 7 & 8 2020

We are learning to be aware of ‘out of bounds’ areas

within our school

Introducing the Manilla Central School Music Project 2020!

We are excited to announce several new opportunities for students who already enjoy music activities and those who’d like to try a new musical activity!

Throughout 2020, there will be different music, vocal and instrumental groups happening throughout the school day. All activities are open to all Manilla Central School students. The different activities are listed below, along with when they will be happening. The days and times will vary a little due to the secondary school running on a fortnightly timetable, but all the information is provided for you to decide on whether you would like your child to be involved in any one or several of the groups.

As places in some of the groups are limited, it is important that you get your EOI back ASAP so as not to miss out! Where interest exceeds the place allocation, a waiting list will be started and as movement of students occurs throughout the year, students may be able to move into a group from a waiting list.

This initiative has been made possible due to the success of the after-school groups that commenced last year. Miss Rowena Singleton would like to thank the students and their parents who were a part of that initiative. You have made this project possible because of your participation and contribution!

If your child would like to be involved with any of the groups listed below, there are permission notes available at the primary and secondary offices for you to complete and return to Miss Singleton.

Looking forward to creating many wonderful musical performances and compositions!
