5/6 Topaz News

5/6 have had a very busy Term 2 and are all looking forward to the holidays to refresh ready for a jam-packed Term 3.

In the Unit of Inquiry, Australia as a Nation, we explored a number of topics linked to the Australian government, and Australian history. We improved our writing and expanded our knowledge on historical recounts which we have shared throughout the term in the newsletter. Research and independent work was a large focus throughout this unit, and 5/6 are keen to learn more during the Canberra excursion in early Term 4.

In Mathematics, students have explored a variety of topics linked to the real world, and have made some forward planning for their predictions for Game 3 of State of Origin. Fingers crossed it is a NSW series again! 5/6 are looking forward to the Athletics Carnival in Gunnedah on Wednesday and have participated well in the field events held at school over the last few weeks. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy break. I would also like to take this opportunity to inform you that I will be absent in Term 3 Week 1, and returning to work in Week 2.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) was first launched at Manilla Central School in 2009. At this time, PBL was used as a behaviour management program, however, recent departmental changes since then have stipulated the program to cater more for the well-being and success of our students through creating effective teaching/learning environments where students make positive choices. As the NSW Department and Education brings in new focus areas for schools to implement, and as the school community grows and changes, schools need to acknowledge these

changes and implement programs which support the new initiatives.

As part of the recent PBL training attended in Week 8 of Term 2, we have received advice from our PBL coaches in regards to enhancing our school-wide expectations at Manilla Central School. The current expectations of Respect for self, others and environment will now encompass these under the one umbrella of Respect, with additional expectations of Responsibility and Aspiring Learners.

We are asking for community involvement in the process of creating the desired behaviours for these expectations. The Manilla Central School community includes students, all staff, teaching and non-teaching, parents and carers, and any member of the wider Manilla community who would like to give input.

The PBL leaders have created a survey which can be accessed from the following link: https://forms.gle/hgFhy6yoeAUegooD9

Alternatively, you scan the following QR code by using the camera on your phone or by using a QR reader to access the survey.

This link and QR code can also be accessed from the Manilla Central School Facebook page.

Students will be given the opportunity to complete the survey during class time this week. It would be greatly appreciated if you could share your ideas to support the effective implementation of the PBL relaunch at Manilla Central School. If you wish to complete the survey, please do so before Friday 5th July.

Opportunity Hub

On Thursday, Brad from Opportunity Hub worked with the 5/6 students in the primary. We played Aboriginal games. The first game was using clapsticks and moving to the beat. The second game we played on the oval in two teams with a ball. We had lots of fun.

Thanks Brad!
