Netball NSW Schools Cup Carnival

Last Thursday, 4 teams from Manilla Central School competed in the Netball NSW School Cup Carnival at the Tamworth Sports Dome. There were 2 teams from years 5 and 6, one in the competitive division and one mixed team of boys and girls in the non-competitive division. There were also 2 teams from years 7 and 8, one boys team and one girls team.

The year 5/6 non-competitive team (Manilla Mayhem) were a mixture of students who don’t normally play netball and did exceptionally well, winning 2 out of 5 of their games. By the end of the day their skills had improved so much they really did look like “netballers”.

The year 5/6 competitive team (Manilla Super Novas) played 6 games, winning 4 of them. This placed them 3rd overall for the day which is an outstanding achievement. Well done Super Novas.

The 7/8 Girls, played 8 games, and had 1 win and 1 draw. Congratulations to the 7/8 Boys team who will progress straight to the regional carnival as they were the only boys team that entered. They did, however, have the opportunity to play against the girls teams for practice, and managed a win in one of their games. Good luck boys at the Regional Carnival.

A massive thank you to Leah Leard, for giving up her time to coach the Manilla Super Novas team. Also, a very big thank you to all the parents who assisted with transport on the day, and the high school girls (Emily McDonald, Taylah Kelly, Laura Stackman and Emily-Jane Paull) who umpired Manilla teams from both Manilla Central School and St Michael’s School.

Manilla Mayhem: Taylah McCarthy, Chloe Thrift, Angela Grant, Tanaya Temple, Ashanti Fletcher, Anthony Mitchell, Angela McCubbin, Emily McBride and Kurt Sing

Manilla Super Novas: Jessica Paull, Samantha McCubbin, Holly Wagstaff, Jasmine Collier, Trudie Ison, Hope-Maree Withers, Jocelyn Heywood, Zantara Stanton-Sing, Phoebe Riley and Emma Scott

CHS Open Netball Knockout

Congratulations and commiserations go to our Open Girls Netball team who, last Thursday, travelled to The Dome in Tamworth to compete in the North West Gala Day Knockout Competition. The girls were a strong force, convincingly defeating Peel HS 43-21. One hour later the girls backed up to play last year’s North West Champs, Tamworth HS, in a final. The girls played well, unfortunately going down 48- 29. To their credit, the team remained positive and used such a high quality match as great practice for the up and coming Central Schools Carnival which will be played in Inverell first week back next term. CHS Netball Knockout Team: Reece Hawkins, Claudia Jones, Lauren McNeill, Taylor Skelton, Nicole Bradley, Ashley Arnold, Casey-Lee Cochrane, Brodie Boman, and Lana Winter

Gruffalo’s Child

Students from Infants had an amazing experience travelling to Tamworth’s Town Hall on Friday to be captivated by a stage production “The Gruffalo’s Child”. Teacher and students alike enjoyed ANZAC Park, where they had lunch and had time to play. A big thank you to Miss Sevil for organising such a wonderful experience for our students and to the teachers and staff who accompanied our students to such a wonder event; Mrs Fielding, Mrs Philp, Mrs Goodman, Mrs Holzigal, Mrs Bevitt, Mrs McNeill and Mrs Howlett.

Excited Students Ashton Dunning-Trewlynn, Isabella Ormiston and Logan Northey on the bus on their way to see The Gruffao’s Child.

Pictured above are the Silver Award Winner from from last Friday’s K/1S Assembly. Congratulations to all the winners.

Secondary Awards Assembly

We invite our parents and friends to our Secondary Awards Assembly this Thursday at 10.00 am. Parents and the award winners are invited to stay afterwards for a delicious morning tea in the library. After morning tea, our Year 9 and 10 students will be involved in the ‘Love Bites’ program. This program focusses on building positive relationships, how to maintain these relationships and reducing domestic violence.

Police Liaison Officer

We would like to thank Constable Robyn Smith for conducting awareness talks in the Secondary this week. Constable Smith is our local Police Liaison Officer, worked with our students on Monday, 22nd June, about the inappropriate use and correct usage of Social Media.

New Teachers

I would to announce a couple of changes to our Secondary staff. These changes will commence in Term 3.

Mrs Sara Taylor will be returning to her duties after two terms of maternity leave. We would like to thank Mr David Weekes for fulfilling the PD/H/PE role in such an excellent, professional manner.

Mrs Vanessa Christakos will be resuming her three day position at Calrossy Anglican School. Fortunately, she will remain with us for two days a week as Librarian.

Ms Elizabeth Stone will be joining us for the remainder of the year in the English Department. We welcome Elizabeth and are very pleased to have her expertise on staff.

Dental Van

Last term we received a visit from the organisers of the Australian Mobile Dental Care Van. We were supposed to have had the van station itself at the school so that our students could receive a free dental check-up. I received a message last week from them this week apologising for not visiting our school as scheduled. They are having troubles with their Medicare accounts, therefore have not been able to commit their services. I will be having a meeting with the manager of the Dental Van later this week in order to find a suitable date for the visit later this year.

NAIDOC Week

We will be officially celebrating NAIDOC week on Wednesday, 22 July in Week 2.

At this stage, we will be conducting a K-12 assembly with a special guest speaker in the morning. This will be followed with the NAIDOC cake cutting. All students will then watch a cultural performance and take part in activities.

Staff Development Day

Our staff will be heading to Armidale on our Staff Development Day. We are involved in a Central Schools project with Guyra, Walcha, Uralla, Barraba and Bundurra Central Schools that will concentrate on brain power and ‘how to learn’ techniques for our students.

LoVE BiTES Program Manilla Central School is hosting the LoVE BiTES Program: TERM 2: Week 10 Thursday, 25th June. It will be run for students in Year 9 and Year 10. NOTE: If you do not want your child to be involved in this program can you please notify the school.

What is LoVE BiTES?

LoVE BiTES is an extremely successful school-based Domestic and Family Violence and Sexual Assault prevention program. The LoVE BiTES program consists of two interactive education workshops on Domestic and Family Violence and Sexual Assault followed by creative workshops that consolidate the information from the morning. Male and female facilitators present the program as a team and LoVE BiTES consistently models respectful relationships between male and female students, teachers and workers. The artworks and other work created in the creative sessions are the basis for local campaigns to challenge Violence against Women in their community. This campaign is led by and delivered by young people.

9/10 Drama Excursion – Gruffalo’s Child

This term 9/10 Drama has been doing a puppetry unit. As part of the unit we went to see the play Gruffalo's Child at the Tamworth Town Hall. The excursion was thoroughly enjoyed by all students and the behaviour of all students is to be congratulated. We had lunch at McDonalds after the play and had many lovely compliments from members of the public, including a group of mums who were able to enjoy a coffee in peace while

some of our students entertained their children in the play area. Miss Michelle Litchfield

STUDENT WELFARE AND DISCIPLINE FLOWCHART 2015

There is a copy of the new High School Student Support Program Flowchart attached to this newsletter. We have modified the flowchart to incorporate a more effective reward system for students who are consistently working well in class, both in academic achievement and consistency, and areas that include sporting, respect, cultural and service. The flowchart also outlines the process that will occur if students are not following the school rules. Twice a term there will be merit awards given out during Year Meetings to acknowledge and reward students for positive behaviours and contributions to the school community. The awarding of BRONZE, SILVER, GOLD and PLATINUM awards will be now based on the number of awards achieved throughout the year and still occur in the formal assembly at the end of each term.
