CAPERS 2019

On Friday, Friday night and Saturday night students from Manilla Central School participated in the 10th CAPERS production- Carnivale.

They were involved in the massed choir, massed Indigenous dance, Stage 2 massed dance and backstage commitments. The students represented MCS with pride and showed great enthusiasm in their chosen item.

Many rehearsals were had in order to get the students ready for the performances which were very well received by family members in the crowd. Ms Singleton from the secondary was involved with the students in the choir and coordinated most of the rehearsals for the massed Indigenous dance. Mrs Hawley, Mrs McNeill and myself assisted students in the rehearsals of the massed Stage 2 dance and the finale dance.

Thank you to all of the dedicated students who upheld their commitment to be a part of the production. Also to the committed staff who gave their time to ensure that CAPERS was a huge success for 2019. Thank you Ms Singleton, Mrs McNeill and Mrs Hawley- I couldn’t have done it without you!

Writing Competition WinnerEach year Dymocks and Pan Macmillan invite Australian kids to get creative and enter a writing competition that’s judged by the one and only, Andy Griffiths. This year, to celebrate the release of The 117-Storey Treehouse, students entering this competition were asked to complete a short story (200-400 words) following the theme: If you could add one level to Andy and Terry’s Treehouse, what would it be? Some keen and dedicated students in 4/5 Sapphire attempted this writing competition. Last week we were delighted to receive the very exciting news that Jessica Wise (Year 5) was the major winner of this competition. Such a tremendous achievement in a competition that was open to all primary school aged students across Australia. Jess receives a book pack containing 8 books supplied by Pan Macmillan valued at $116.88. Additionally, her story will be framed with illustrations by Terry Denton! Congratulations Jessica, we can’t wait to see your framed masterpiece. Here is Jessica’s winning entry:

The 118-Story Treehouse

Hi, my name is Andy, this is my friend Terry and neighbour Jill.

We live in a tree and when I say tree I mean treehouse, and when I say treehouse I mean a 118-story treehouse (it used to be 117). “Hey Andy, how is the new level?” asked Jill. “Good, it’s done.” I replied. Jill and Terry suddenly ran to the new level.

“Andy how do the doors open, they’re stuck.” “Simple Terry, roll the dice in the middle of the room,” He always makes me explain stuff.

Ring, ring, ring, ring. “It’s the 3D telephone.

It’s our publisher.

“Hello Mr. Bignose,” answered Jill. “Just don’t, 5pm today, the book, tell those buffoons to GET WRITING!!!” Terry wasn’t with me and Jill to hear Mr. Bignose, so he must be in the new level. Jill and I race there to tell Terry.

“Andy, I rolled a 5 what happens now?” “You idiot Terry, why couldn’t you wait,” I screamed. Door 5 opened and pulled us in with a big black hand.

“Terry look what you did, we got grabbed by a gigantic hand,” I tried to breathe, but he made it extremely hard. “Andy, that hand belonged to an ape,” said Jill.

“Andy, what is in these doors?” Jill questioned. “Door 1= Jurassic Period, door 2= The future.”

“I love the future,” said Terry. “Terry shut it, door 3= giant land, door 4 = Eye of a cyclone and door 6= Aliens Door.”

“Andy you counted right, but what about door number 5?” Questioned Jill and Terry, happy but concerned.

Readers give me a second, I need to remember door number 5.

“So the thing is, I can’t remember,” I didn’t need this now. “Andy I’m not the idiot here, you are,” yelled Terry triumphantly at the top of his lungs.

One hour later:

“Run,” I screamed back to Jill and Terry, we were being chased by the giant ape at full throttle. And the idiot we call Terry was making funny faces at it.

“Terry cut it out you dumb-dumb.” “But I can’t help it.” “Boys stop fighting and look, there’s the exit,” Jill said.

We ran to the exit and went through back into the room.

“Ah Andy, the ape came through the door,” said Terry putting on a brave face. “Roll.”

State Athletics Championships

Sekora Daley and Ben Coomer-Ison competed at the PSSA State Athletics Championships last week at the Homebush athletics track. Both participated in shot put. It was a terrific experience for them both and they have taken away from the experience a load of great memories and targets to achieve in 2020.

Due to the late season opening of the pool, Intensive Swimming has been postponed this week.

Remembrance Day

Today we held a small ceremony in the secondary and primary departments to honour the brave servicemen and women who participated in World War One and the many campaigns since then. Our captains were involved in the town ceremony and laid a wreath on behalf of the Primary and Secondary. Hayley Northey and Zac McNeill gave an address the ceremony about the role of peace keepers in the modern military campaigns.

Bush Fires

Our heart filled thoughts are with the people and schools who are currently effected by the horrendous bush fire that are demolishing their communities. We pray that all are safe and wish their communities all the very best from all us in the Manilla community.

All NSW schools have a bush fire contingency plan that we abide by if and when in the event bush fire threatens our schools.

Primary EventsWhat a great start to Term 4 we’ve had, with excursions to Canberra, CAPERS and wonderful learning opportunities every day. Here are a few things that have been happening back at school while some of our students have been out in the community representing MCS. Prep- Our Kindergarten Preparation students have been working hard learning about our routines at school and getting to know their teachers. We have been learning to read by identifying words in text, using draw, talk, write, share to develop our early story telling skills and using talk moves in our number talks. Stage 1- Stage 1 have been focusing on developing our vocabulary skills, reading, and spelling through our daily phonics lessons. Our students have been working on consonant and vowel diagraphs and are very proud of their learning. They have developed vocabulary walls and have been learning to describe new words by what they are and what they are not. Stage 3 – 5/6 Topaz have been working on coding Beebots to complete area maps and create their own. Last week they created a race track and used their problem solving skills to identify the best route on the track and how to win their race.

Manilla Central School, as a service to the school community, may publicise non-school events which may be of interest. Manilla Central School does not endorse or sponsor these events and accepts no responsibility for the service provided.

A Message from Kevin Anderson.I am well aware the impact of this unprecedented drought is heavy, but there is an opportunity for assistance available next week with Namoi Unlimited coordinating some new drought support activities. There are five locations identified for these events next week:• 11 November – Nundle Bowling Club• 12 November – Walcha Memorial Club• 13 November – Gunnedah Services Club• 14 November – Roxy Theatre Bingara• 15 November – Quirindi RSL ClubThere will be three elements to these events:1. From 10am to 2pm drought support assistance and people will be available at these locations to talk about and assist people with the support that is being provided to help people through this drought.2. From 10am to 2pm Councils, LabourCo and Roads and Maritime Service will be on hand to talk about the opportunity for casual work in your community.3. From 9am and throughout the day Namoi Unlimited are preparing to hold important courses in these towns which will also assist in finding casual work, or can be for current workers to upskill. Because the training is subsidised, and if you meet the short eligibility criteria then there will be no charges for the training. The training on offer in these locations is: First Aid, White Card (needed if you want to work in construction) and a new course called #WTF – What’s the Future about how to look at your business, some support mechanisms and individual assistance like resume writing.People will need to complete the registrations in each location with the training providers. You can do this at the website www.namoiunlimited.nsw.gov.au/projects/skills-training/ or email at [email protected] and you will be directed to a training provider. This is an excellent opportunity for people across the Namoi region and with the support of the Councils and other agencies I hope this will provide assistance to people dealing with this current drought.Feel free to distribute this to other businesses and friends.

Kind regards

Kevin
