The bake-off was organised by a number of branches throughout thenetwork (Chichester, Horsham, Guildford,Farnham and Brighton and Hove) andthose who took part were given the task of creating Halloween-themed bakes. The bakes were then judged byindependent adjudicators and sold to the local community to raise money andawareness for Cancer Research UK.
Culinary creations included; a graveyardsponge cake with edible grave stones,severed-finger biscuits, gingerbread ghostsand eyeball cupcakes on sticks. However,the highlight of the day was celebrity guest judge and runner-up of 2014’s GreatBritish Bake Off, Kate Henry. Kate, who is a local resident, judged their bake-off andcrowned Lily Hawkins, Team Administrator,as overall bake-off champion and winner with her four-layered, sponge

Much has been written in the national press aboutLittlehampton’s East Beach Café. It was completed in 2007 tothe designs of Thomas Heatherwick (of Olympic cauldron and London bus fame) and features rusted steel as the
principle material. Lots could be said, and has been, about both the building and its food.
Bearing in mind Brighton & Hove’s inability to get anything of note built,I’m more interested in the battle that was fought by its creator, JaneWood. The story starts with Jane buying at auction a seafront flat inLittlehampton. She then acquired the chippy kiosk in front to stop it frombeing turned into something awful. Her saviour was a Concessions Officerat Arun District Council, Mary Campling, who bought into Jane’s dream ofbringing world-class architecture to the town. Through Mrs Campling’sinterventions, the council saw fit to do whatever was necessary to makeit happen and granted a long lease with a nominal rent.
Although Jane speaks for England about her dealings with variouscouncils in trying to get various projects moving, it is the case that shebuilt the West Beach Café in 2008, the World’s Longest Bench in 2010 andthe Stage by the Sea in 2014 by architects Asif Khan, Studio Weave andFlanagan Lawrence respectively. These buildings have worked wondersfor Littlehampton.
If such structures areto be built, it has to beborne in mind that thebusinesses within them(cafes, museums, etc) arenot particularly moreprofitable than if theyhad been built withindrab seaside sheds. It isthe rest of a town thatultimately benefits. That is why councils should be bending overbackwards to attract people like Jane.

Much as I was impressed by thespeed at which the Turkishelectricians attended to mybroken electricity cable, I was
not surprised with the ‘working’ scene Ifound when I returned home from thebeach on the day that the work was inprogress. While the older electrician –who looked like a friendly walnut injeans – laboured at the top of a very tallladder, the two impish lads who, Iassume, were there to help, chasedaround the field trying to belt each
other around the head with a substantial bit of olive tree; not exactlyan olive branch then ...
I offered them coffee and they asked for water, which I fetched andthey – somewhat embarrassingly for me – had to drink from plasticwine glasses. Feeling guilty about the wine glasses, I forced them intohaving coffee as well, into which they each dissolved so much sugarthat one could stand a spoon in it.
Still, the job was finished in one day and electricity, cold beers andhot showers were restored.
Back in Blighty two weeks later, I received a text from one of mytenants – a husband and wife couple – who gave me notice that theywere to leave in a couple of weeks. They have lived with me for eightweeks and although I met the husband when he looked at the room,I’ve never met the wife, so different are our daily routines. Being as Ihaven’t managed to meet her in eight weeks and they’re due to moveout in two, I assume I’ll never meet her, which seems most odd,although it kind of epitomises my idea of a perfect tenant.
I have therefore reinstated my ad on the Spare Room website andam struggling to cope with the deluge of people wanting to look atthe room. In the past, I’ve always had students from language schoolssent to me and have had no part in the selection process. The 20stone Kuwaiti who’d just had a stomach operation, destined for myroom at the top of 64 stairs, was a case in point. There’s no way Iwould have chosen him, or he I, had we been given the option.
I’m afraid that the internet method of selection does not bring outthe best in me, and I become judgemental, critical and person-phobic. Anyone who has a photo that looks like they should be on adating website is immediately dismissed. I am not interested in howattractive a potential lodger might be. Neither do I want a needyperson who wants to make friends. Frankly, they’ll be lucky (orunlucky, depending on how you look at it) to bump into me at all, letalone get to share a bottle of wine with me.
After much culling, I made my final selection and I’m now standingin the living room window awaiting the arrival of the first candidate. Ihave to stand in the window as the doorbell still doesn’t work (10years and counting). Standing in the window does not help with myperson paranoia, and I’m fervently hoping that the man coming down the road with a zip tattooed on his forehead is not heading to my gate ...

This week we shot our tenth episode ofLatest Homes Live. Reaching doublefigures felt like a bit of a landmark really,so we reflected on the past 10 shows
and thought about what knowledge we havepicked up from our time on the series so far.
Andrew: Although I have worked on a propertyshow in the past, Simone and I were bothnewbies to Brighton. I guess that I can safelysay I am much more clued up on Brighton,Hove, Worthing and the surrounding townsand villages, from a real estate angle. Put itthis way: I no longer have to programme mySat Nav whenever I want to drive from theproduction office to the TV studio! And whenwe arrange a shoot in Hove, I know not to headtowards Seaford.
What’s really amazing is how much I havelearnt from our weekly ‘House Call’ feature.Because of the questionsthat are posed to ourstudio guests each week, Inow know a lot moreabout what to expect as atenant, and what to pre-empt when I eventuallydecide to buy. If you’venever caught this part ofthe show, we cover it all!From difficult landlords tountidy tenants, to ironburns in the carpet, to ancient wells onboundary lines. Our team will answer anythingyou want – as long as it’s got something to dowith the world of property. So don’t write infor advice about your love life (although wedid once help out a lady who was concernedabout the implications of leaving herboyfriend, and what it would mean for theirjointly-owned house).
I’ve learnt so much aboutthe process of buying as well.As a 30-year-old, it’s beenvaluable information to me. Ibarely understood the term‘stamp duty’ previously. I
thought it was something to do with postage!Most enlightening to me has been
investigating how newly built homes incorporatefantastic technology and eco-systems. Thesehouses have often been in the high-end pricebracket, but when you get down to the nitty-gritty, they save in the long run. This is a majorplus when investing in these kinds of properties;from solar panelling to water recycling systems,

modern homes are enticing me more than anyother. Having said that, seeing how somedesigners have taken period houses anddeveloped them internally into a contemporaryliving space, all the while retaining vintage flair,is a trend that I am also enjoying.
Guilty pleasure of the last ten episodes:‘Exceptional Haunted Homes’. That pesky ghoststamping around in the maid's quarters ofPreston Manor gave me the chills.
Simone: Hands down, what I have enjoyed themost presenting the first 10 Latest Homes Liveepisodes is learning about the different types ofbuilding – old, new, vintage, contemporary. Ienjoy history so much, and Brighton is steepedin it. Whilst Andrew admires the new builds, Ilike to browse the catalogues of Victorian,Edwardian and Gothic buildings that line thisbeautiful city. There’s even the buildings fromthe 1960s – all unique and intriguing in theirown special way.
The boundary between Brighton and Hove isa great demonstration of this variant ofarchitecture in the city. We’ve been luckyenough to be granted access to periodtownhouses and regency squares, rooftopterraces and ancient manor houses. This cityhas everything, from Norman structures tocubist buildings to the Pavilion and thebandstand on the pier. Obviously the churches,listed manors and town halls of the area arestriking and unique, but the wonderful thingabout this city is the variety of actual homesthat represent all the shapes and sizes ofarchitecture. I’d love to actually live in aproperty that comes with its own tale to tell.
My guilty pleasure was visiting the Swedish-themed ‘Exceptional Home’, where the lady ofthe house let me try on one of her stunningdresses. Better than Andrew’s run-in with aghost, in my opinion!
