Threshold is being held tocoincide with the RIBA’s LoveArchitecture Festival 2012 todemonstrate “how architects andassociated creative professionalscan adapt, reuse, transform and re-invent the spaces around us”. Asresidents of Brighton & Hove, each ofus is all too aware of the constraints ofour land- and sea-locked city.

Several local architectural practicesthat I am fond of already are eitherorganising or taking part in the event.The list of organisers includes Chalk Architecture, a firm that I have writtenabout several times, most recently for award-winning work on the WilburyRoad branch of Small Batch Coffee. Also involved is a:b:i:r architects (theirlower-case lettering and colons – I can’t keep up), whose work for BrightonHousing Trust on Oriental Place was the topic of a recent column. JimStephenson, the popular architectural photographer, Richard Wolfstrome, an incredibly passionate and versatile designer, and Push Studios, are allhelping out too. Cara Courage is curator.

Whilst I don’t want to give too much away, as the goal is ultimately toattract visitors, I am certainly intrigued to see just what Paul Nicholson atChalk will be doing with the caravan that he has just purchased for £100.

As I write, my own 30 minute talk on housing is close to completion. Afterplaying around with various ideas, we settled on ‘Building an image: Whythe RIBA should accommodate a poster boy’ as a title. I am going to be givingmy thoughts on why the public simply do not look forward to development,and why architects need to find a Jamie Oliver from amongst themselves –rather than let Kevin McCloud from Grand Designs do all of the work.

Ihave now beenletting rooms inmy house for

over ten years andwould recommendit to anyone,especially if theyhave a fairly laid-back attitude tolife. Most of thepeople who comeand stay in myhouse are eithervery nice orterribly boring,both of which I cancope with. It is notvery often that Iactively don’t likesomeone, but itoccasionally happens. Normally, the people Idon’t like have something in common. Theyare generally men of around my age whoeither still live with their mothers, or have adoting wife at home to look after them. I amneither motherly, or doting, and therein liesthe fundamental problem.

I can see why a typical, conventional manin their late ‘30s and ‘40s might be a littleconfused by my lifestyle. I live in a big houseand don’t have a husband and appear not towork very often, yet am always going on holiday. I am sometimes visited by the occasional boyfriend and often stay in bed all day with a hangover. I think they either assume that I’m an unemployed hooker, or a major drugdealer and therefore decide to treat me accordingly, which is either withcontempt or patronisation.

One of these ‘people that I don’t like’ is currently billeted at LandladyTowers, although thankfully only for a couple of weeks. He is Spanish and I disliked him from the moment I opened the front door and he was alreadywhingeing and moaning about the amount of steps up the front door. Thereare five. Imagine the moaning after the further 27 stairs up to his room,even though I carried his large suitcase. The moaning continued about thespeed of the internet, the fact that he had to put his plate in the dishwasherand even – and this is a first – the fact that the shower didn’t switch offquickly enough. I think he’s about 40, although he’s a heavy smoker andcould easily be 30 and he still lives with his mother, who clearly washes allhis plates for him and switches off the shower for him when he’s finished.

To be fair, he is made to look even more unpleasant by the shiningexample who is renting my other room at the moment. The other student isa French paratrooper who looks like a Premier League footballer, cooks hisown food while giving consideration to my use of the kitchen, cleans thekitchen like a demon, thanks me for doing his washing and carried both ofhis enormously heavy bags up 45 stairs without a word of complaint. I eventake him out clubbing with me occasionally, which is unheard of. Mr Moanyprobably wouldn’t make it up the steps. follow me on twitter @robert_nemeth

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It was bath times. At least Iimagine that was Charles Dickens’ original draft. Perhaps he wasn’t actuallythinking about the French Revolution when he wrote those first sentences,

instead trying to get children washed and ready for bed. The good and the badof parenthood – the hot and cold, if you like – are often shunted against eachother, and bath time is the perfect illustration.

In the future, I will miss these moments. When recalling the best bits ofbeing a dad, The Boy and Youngest™’s shrieks of enjoyment at this time will bewhat I try and recollect. Somehow, they are often entwined with in-the-momentstresses – The Tale of Two Emotions (don’t worry: only one more shoehornedDickens reference to go).

Despite the fact they like a bath,rounding them up can be like persuadinga couple of cats into a basket to takethem to the vets. As this is the final legof what has often been a hard parentingday, you’re keen for bath time to happen quickly. Afterwards, persuading themout is equally difficult. This seems unfair. If one direction’s difficult, surely theopposite should be easy, like cycling up then down a hill? Instead it’s like amission to Mars. Both legs are tricky. They don’t want to get in the bath. Theydon’t want to get out.

The big positive at bath times is The Boy is great at being an older brother,just about the funniest companion you can ever be, with a range of jokes thatinvolve water. At his best, Youngest™ is a bustling delight, all smiles and shrieksand giggles at his older brother (who he may well have been fighting with tenminutes before). Their excitement and fun is so pure.

However, there’s always something that you can predict with accuracy atbath time (and I’m not talking about displacement). It’s that the excitement willrise, still delightful heading into unstable. I think I’ve got the word: hysteria. Apitch of excitement like the high ominous whine of a incoming rocket. ‘Hysteria’should be the name of a children’s shampoo.

Something will then happen while they’re rubber ducking about – a wrongsplash, a mistimed toy hitting the other, an argument over a tap – and the moodinstantly turns. They turn from best of friends to mortal enemies. Not so much

pistols at dawns, as battleships at dusk. On my birthday I managed todelegate the bath time task. And I

can honestly say, that “was afar, far better thing that I did

then than I have ever done”.

I can’t believe it’s mid June, it wasJanuary a minute ago. Literally aminute ago. I turned to put a wash

on and suddenly it’s June. They say‘time flies when you’re having fun’.But really it’s ‘time flies when you’rea working mum who never stops tosit down, ever’. Obviously I do sitdown, sometimes. Usually to checkmy emails, design a poster, peelsome potatoes or see if I can workout the meaning of Pi on a calculator.Even when I’m supposedly ‘relaxing’watching TV, I’ve become more of anavid listener than watcher. I’mlistening to Scrubs whiledeconstructing Pi. Does anyoneactually watch TV anymore? Or arewe all on laptops reading Twitterfeeds about the latest dead pop-starand a certain celebrities’ awful newhandbag? Are we all just halfwatching/ half listening to the TVwhile repeatedly checking our email,wasting evenings waiting forpassword recovery emails to log intowebsites purely to unsubscribe fromtheir email bombardment aboutgarden furniture and weight-loss G-strings? Modern life really wastes as much time as it saves.

Yes, washing laundry is quicker than it was 70 years ago. I save hours nothaving to mangle to just spend them trying to remember passwords. Half-termhas come and gone. Did we not just have Easter? They’ve slipped in anotherholiday. Then it’s only weeks ‘til the long stretch of summer childcare issues. Imean summer fun-times. I’m glad I’m not living 100 years ago, having to homeeducate. I’d soon be a white-haired nutter requiring electric shock treatment.My child refuses to listen when I teach her anything. From how to hold a fork,to how to write the letter ‘D’. Her way is always best and her way is absolutelynot. She cannot attempt to cut her fish finger up without spilling the wholecontents of her plate on the floor, nor write the letter ‘D’ without adding ‘tails’that do not belong there. When asked why she was adding decorative ‘tails’onto all her letters (you could not understand her writing at all) she repliedthat she wanted to be ‘different’. Oh. I spent my childhood wishing to be likeeveryone else – normal. I was short, gobby and my hippy parents knitted myclothes. I wanted to be quiet and wear polyester. I’m sure when I bought myfirst trainers (Adidas) my mum exclaimed: “But I could have made you those!”.

So my child wants to be different. This is as disappointing to me asdiscovering my child wants to be a junkie when she grows up. I’d hoped she’dbecome a solicitor or doctor, not Lady Gaga (bet she writes tails on herletters). Anyway I’m wasting time, I need to half listen to TV and Google how toget Blu-Tack out of carpet. Time flies when your busy being normal.
