T oo darn hot! In typical British fashion, summer arrived too late, too latefor school kids to enjoy the sun, too late for those who booked summerbreaks to enjoy the relaxing warmth of a summer holiday.

A bout as far away in Sussexthat one can drive fromBrighton and Hove, near

the junction with Hampshireand Surrey, sits ShulbredePriory. It currently serves as afamily home and, for a luckyfew each year, something of avisitor attraction.

One recent guest was PrinceCharles who paid a visit whilstmaking a documentary on SirHubert Parry, composer ofJerusalem and a formerresident of Shulbrede Priory. Itis quite something that amongst the currentresidents are Laura Ponsonby and Kate Russell,great-granddaughters of Sir Hubert. I was luckyenough to meet both of them and othermembers of the family on a recent trip myself,which included a short stop-off at the ruins ofCowdray House on the way.

After passing peacocks, ducks,geese and lots of conkers, thewest side of the house came intoview. The fairly modest stonefaçade, with ashlar blocks aroundthe front door and windows, invitescuriosity straight away. Ofparticular interest is a window setin the middle of a chimney stack.Once inside, it is clear that thewindow’s seemingly illogicalposition is the result of arestructuring of the building at some point where a replacement stack hasbeen built inside to correspond with an altered layout.

Upstairs is fascinating in a different way. It is more like a traditionalhouse, save for a double-height crown-post roof on display in the prior’schamber (or, more appropriate perhaps, the guests’ hall). A huge beamabove is cracked which, it is thought, led to the division of the room intotwo. The second section is a smaller room containing a number of Parry-related items. Much concerns the subject of Parry’s musical achievementsbut, for architecture fans, there were photographs of his other residences.These include Knight’s Croft in Rustington, by the architect Norman Shaw,and 17 Kensington Square in London.

Shulbrede Priory was founded before 1200 as a home for Augustinian canons.Henry VIII is to thank for the change in use of the building from ecclesiastical tosecular purposes. The building was once huge but much is now missing.

So much could be written about this wonderful, secluded, home. Indeed, ithas been. A son-in-law of Sir Hubert, Arthur Ponsonby, took the trouble to writea substantial tome on Shulbrede. It is rare though, so I will have to keep myeyes open to find a copy.Get in touch: [email protected] or www.buildingopinions.com

I am currently in the midlands on the Sunday following my mother’s funeral,which took place on the hottest day of the unseasonal heat-wave weexperienced at the beginning of October. There are actually mosquitoes

buzzing around my head as I write this, in Stoke-On-Trent! The 80 degreetemperature, plus the fact that I’d stayed up drinking Bacardi with my cousinuntil 5am the night before made me feel quite faint in church at the funeraland I feared that I might collapse over the coffin, which is not a good look,although it often seems to happen in soap operas. A man who knew mymother (although as far as I remember, she didn’t like him very much as,according to her, he always ‘went on’ a bit) made a very long and predictablytedious speech in the church, which fortuitously was interrupted by asustained blast of deafening feedback from the church sound system. If itwas not divine intervention, then I don’t know what is and those in the knowexchanged delighted looks, as it queered his pitch rather.

In spite of the speech and the heat, the day passed off as a memorableand perfect day, with the wake being held in a delightful country pub. I wish Ihad invited the Guinness Book of Records to the wake, as the speed at whichthe buffet food disappeared had to be seen to be believed. Within seconds itlooked like the buffet hadbeen visited by a plagueof locusts. I had no ideathat people withreplacement hips andzimmer-frames couldmove at such lighteningspeed and I’m consideringalerting the 2012 Olympiccommittee about theuntapped talent in our midst – aslong as there’s a table of free food atthe finish line, that is.

This afternoon I invited severalrelatives over for a roast in a valiantattempt to empty my mother’soverflowing freezer. Harold, Ethel,Violet and Doreen are all over 80 and Iwas rather honoured to have themsitting round the dinner table as itreminded me of Sunday afternoons inthe 70s with them all shouting ateach other and cracking veryunseemly jokes. Violet claimed thatshe’d been to a funeral on Wednesday– I think they average about two perweek at this age – and the womanbeing interred had left a letter for thepriest to read to everyone in thechurch, which claimed that shewasn’t going to have a wake becausenone of the attendees came and hadtea with her when she was alive, soshe was buggered if she was going topay for them all to have food anddrink now that she was dead. I haveto say, I like her style...

A s a microcosm of my life – and let’s face it, this column – last weekend waspretty much perfect. It involved consumer-related anger plus a visit to aslightly random museum/wildlife area/zoo. I’m sure you’ll agree it had

everything. Saturday, and let’s start with the heart-wrenching moment we allface. Yes, I’m talking of course about sayinggoodbye to a fridge freezer.

To summarise the key points: I wasplanning on buying from an independent,based on previous dreadful customer servicefrom the two main electrical giants. But Iwavered, leaving one of the giants telling meit was free delivery and takeaway, unlessnext day which was £23 if we ordered by2pm. I went home, checked themeasurements and rang back 30 minuteslater, speaking to the same person. Now,they couldn’t deliver the next day and for thenext fortnight delivery was £20. This was likea bad sci-fi (I mean dull) where everythingchanged ever so slightly in half an hour. Iordered from the independent instead.

To ease the tension, let’s flash forward 24hours, The Boy, Youngest™ and I are strokinga tawny owl in a Huxley’s Birds of PreyCentre near Horsham. There’s aknowledgeable man telling us all sort offacts, and we get extra attention as we’rethe only ones in the ‘Meet the owl’ session.The Boy’s very interested in wildlife – hiscurrent favourite TV programme isDeadly 60 – so that’s why we’re there.It’s also what I call one of my GOTHdays. No, not dressing up in black andacting miserable (although thathappens too) but Getting Out TheHouse (My wife is doing an MA so Itake the kids out so she can get somework done). I found this place online,it’s good, despite the fact that it’shidden away behind a garden centrewhere you’d normally find the trellis.

The Boy does some intricate drawings with careful labelling, showing eight birds of prey. Youngest™ and a Peregrine falcon eye each other withsuspicion. Someone in the distance buys a wheelbarrow.

I expect you’re wondering about the fridge-freezer? Ordering from theindependent, it comes when it should. It’s a high fridge-freezer and I’m not atall person. When I open the door and look up at the new high shelf, it’s likelooking into heaven – something to do with the whiteness and the light. It hasthe same effect as contemplating the age of the earth or the size of theuniverse. It makes me feel small.

So there we have it. I’m hoping that’s the best birds of prey/fridge-freezercolumn you’ll have read this year. In a shortlist of one.

I ’m the type of woman who cannever zip her handbag.Everything is always spilling

out as I delude myself that I amthe kind of woman who needs tocarry only a few essentials. Whenin fact my 'essentials' seem toinclude; a heavy duty steel lockerkey, (just in case I ever go to thegym again, even though I joinedsix months ago); three asthmainhalers as I'm paranoid I'll havethat once in a decade attack, (I'malways telling people ‘that actressoff Four Weddings And A Funeraldied of an asthma attack y'know’);and always a few letters fromschool about tree planting orfetes, that I plan to read on thebus, but never do.

They forever remain in my bag,finally forming their own paper-mache escape plan to mush intoornamental masks and flee to theborder (of Brighton and Hove) andhide in charity shops until theyfind new lives. I got this handbagin a charity shop... Oh I long to bethe kind of woman who canactually close her handbag. Neatand tidy and groomed.

I've started a college course, they all have glossy, straight hair and tidyclothes. Even when scraped back, my curly hair escapes the clutches of theclip/band and springs out to say ‘hey, I'm the quirky oddball!' I reckon even ifI was styled head to toe in Prada I would still look like a scarecrow had takenup sewing. Is this why my mum has blow dried straight her hair every day for40 years? Curly hair says 'I'm kooky!' 'I'm messy', 'don't give me the job, I'llquit in three months and leave your paperclips in a right state'.

My little girl has inherited my scraggy mane. Shopkeepers say things like'she has your hair’, then stare, waiting for a reply other than ‘yes’. I just wantto buy a Mango Rubicon I don't want a conversation about genetics. I usuallybanter, ‘yes, I don't know where she gets it from!’ Then I laugh really hard toemphasise that is the punchline and that conversation about hair has ended.Once I was writing my column in a café and a man cycled past thendismounted just to shout ‘I like your hair’ and then cycled off again... (gottalove St James’s Street), it’s just dead keratin cells. Its handy for schoolbecause often her hair looks good even without doing a single thing to it, butthen it builds up a nest of tangles underneath the curls, that only cutting theknots out will cure. My little girl would love it if I cut all her hair off. Shedespises me brushing it, but her golden locks of dead keratin do make herlook cute, a bit scarecrowey, but cute. If I straighten my hair will people takeme more seriously? I don't know, but I reckon I need a new handbag.

Open firesThere really is nothing quite like a roaring open fire.If your home has a disused fireplace, have thechimney inspected and swept. In period propertiesthat have been converted to multiple dwellings,bathrooms and kitchens may be ventilated throughthe chimney, or there could be other structuralproblems that might make it unsafe to use. If indoubt, get a professional opinion.

If your home has no fireplace, but neighbouringidentical properties do, there’s a good chance of

finding a disused fireplace hidden behind someplasterboard or cupboard. When re-instating orreplacing fireplaces, be guided by the period ofyour property. You can find reclaimed andreproduction Victorian and Edwardian fairly easily,although sourcing replacement Deco, Nouveau orarts and crafts fireplaces can be trickier. Imagine for a moment what wouldhappen if you couldn’t go to work...With the recent and very sad loss ofSteve Jobs from the world ofbusiness and product innovation itgot me thinking about successionmanagement and the process ofmaking our businesses work whensomething happens to us. Assomeone once said, it never happensuntil it happens; so what can we doand what should we be doing toprotect against the unthinkable?

Key man insurance

When I first heard the expression‘key-man-insurance’ I assumed itwas something to do with theperson responsible for opening upthe office in the morning. To be fairthat was a long time ago, I was inmy early twenties and my mindwas focused on other far moreserious things. In all seriousnessthough, it is something that everybusiness should be aware of sohere are some statistics:

Seventy-seven per cent ofbusinesses can identify at leastone employee whose loss throughdeath or critical illness would haveserious implications on thebusiness’s survival, however only13 per cent have adequateinsurance in place. Further probingreveals that business decisionmakers are more likely to insureagainst the photocopier breakingdown(!) and only 29 per cent ofbusinesses have ever soughtprofessional advice on businessprotection despite the almost 100per cent acceptance by thebusiness owners that theemployees are the most importantasset of the business.

I couldn’t say it any better thanto quote the Greek entrepreneur Sir Stelios who said shortly after the family’s oil tanker disaster in1991 off the coast of Italy: “If youthink insurance is expensive, try an accident”.

Reins hand-oversHanding over the reins, or‘succession management’, is theprocess of making sure that if anyone person isn’t around to dosomething that someone else or the organisation itself can step in. Inshort, make sure you have sufficientbusiness and or personal disasterrecovery procedures in place.

Family run businesses may wantto think about bringing in otherfamily members onto themanagement team to ensurecontinuity and to protect long termcapital value, even if it’s only for ashort time between the ‘event’ andsale of the business. Otherwiseensure other key members of staffare trained, retained, empoweredand incentivised to do the job. Anyrecovery plan should accommodatefor a monthly income or overallcapital return as appropriate.

Power of attorney

Something often overlooked in the world of planning for a crisis isthe power of attorney. If you die,your executors will deal with youraffairs but what happens if youare critically ill? Who signs thecheques, pays the bills andmanages the business formallyfor you while you recover and untilyou can resume control. If youhaven’t got one then now is a verygood time to call your solicitor toarrange for a Lasting Power ofAttorney to be put in place.

And finally

Key man insurance isn’t only forthe boys in the organisation and abetter term is of course key personinsurance. But whatever we call it,it is something to think aboutbefore the unthinkable, or shouldwe say the unsinkable happens.Could your business survivewithout you? The reality is mostsmall businesses wouldn’t butthey will if we plan ahead and takethe necessary steps to make surethey do.
