T he cliffs to the east of Brighton createa dramatic backdrop for what is theedge of the United Kingdom and the
other day, as I waited for the bus, theywere shrouded in mist as a sea fret driftedin, then out over the chalk precipice andthe haunting drone of the fog hornpunctuated the stillness.
I stood, half watching for the bus, halfout to where I knew there was sea, eventhough it was lost in dense fog. As I didso a large sign appeared through thecloud. “YOU ARE NOT ALONE” it said,which was not entirely true as I wasindeed the only person standing at thebus stop at that point.
Of course the sign has been placedthere as an aid to anyone who, in thedepths of despair, planned to throwthemselves off the cliff and onto theroof of ASDA below. Underneath themessage there were contact details fororganisations such as The Samaritanswho can offer help for anyone who genuinely does feel that, not only arethey alone, but that in such a state their life is no longer a feasible option.
I’ve never felt that low, but I have felt pretty damn close. Once, in atrough of despair, I called The Samaritans. I wasn’t suicidal, but I diddesperately needed to share a problem with someone who was impartial –in that sense I was alone.
A friend had confided in me that she was having an affair with anotherfriend who was married. Why she chose to embroil me in the messy situationwas beyond me. I suspect she felt very alone, unable to talk about it, and shechose me to unburden her soul. I was not pleased. It left me with a terribledilemma. Maybe, knowing that I had once been in a similar but not identicalsituation, I would be able to offer guidance. I could not.
It left me feeling angry and helpless. Did I confront the friend with whomshe was having an affair? Did I warn the friend who was his wife? Did I justkeep schtumm? I had no idea.
Late one night, feeling wretched about the whole thing, I called TheSamaritans. Simply having someone listen did the trick. It cleared my mindof doubt and, afterwards, I knew exactly what I had to do – and I did it. Itwasn’t easy.
It has taken a long time for me to forgive her for putting me in thatposition. But I did learn then that no matter how hard things might seemYOU ARE NEVER ALONE!www.samaritans.org, 08457 90 90 90

news>BHEAA CHARITY DONATIONTO ST JOHN’S CENTREVicky Alderton, the President of theBrighton & Hove Estate AgentsAssociation, visited St John’sCentre in Hove, which is part ofSussex charity Impact-Initiatives,to present a cheque for £750 frommoney raised by the Association.Vicky was shown around thecentre by the manager, NickiFreeman, who explained that thecentre provides social andeducational opportunities for
people over 60 living in Brightonand Hove. The centre offersfriendly company, activities,outings, support and access toother services, there is also a caféwhere you can get affordablehome-cooked meals. Like with anycharity they are constantlyfundraising to provide moreoutings, computer access and atthe moment to refurbish anddecorate the centre. Vicky said, “I was very pleased that theAssociation where able to make a

>BRIGHTON LANDLORDSFACE TAXING TIMESLandlords will have to getplanning permission beforerenting new shared housing ifBrighton & Hove Council’s latestproposal gets approved.
Tony Richard, dirctor of theNational Landlords Association(NLA) said: “This proposal is drivenby concerns over anti-socialbehaviour but such behaviour is a
failure of responsible citizenshipand not landlords fault forproviding much needed housing.Local authorities, police, and thecourts should use existingpowers to tackle this problem.”
This proposal follows theCouncil’s plans to introduceAdditional Licensing that will cost landlords a licence fee every five years.

Every year from September throughuntil June, I have at least oneBIMM student staying with me.
Normally they are 16 or 17 years oldand I think I’ve been really luckywith the ones I’ve had staying as,lately they’ve been fabulousboys. I say this because in thepast I’ve had my fair share ofawkward ‘Emos’ who, with theirattitudes, are about as likely tosucceed in the music industry as I amto become a top soprano.
My current Bimmer is a talented boywho, at the age of 17, has an uncannyknack of instantly sussing people out.He is refreshingly honest and open andI really value his opinion. He has anaturally inbuilt sense of other people’spersonal space. For example, my kitchenis very small and doesn’t allow more thanone person at a time to be cooking, ironing,or making tea therein. If my lodger comesinto the kitchen and sees me there, he willcome back when I’ve finished. You’d besurprised at the number of lodgers whostand gawping idiotically in the doorwayas I iron a pillowcase. Worse still, some ofthem barge their way in while I’m tryingto empty the dishwasher and attempt toput something dirty in. A dangerousundertaking when I’ve got a sharpknife or rolling pin in my hand. I willcertainly miss my BIMM lodger when hegoes at the end of the month.
As an older person who is onthe well-fermented side ofcynical, I am aware that Ioccasionally judge people tooharshly, often forming an instant(although sometimes all too accurate) opinion of them. Take the recentSpanish student for example. I’d formed an unfavourable opinion of him beforehe’d even set foot in the hallway. Just to get a second opinion, I asked myBimmer what he thought, to which he replied that he thought the Spanish guywas weird. He went on to elaborate that the Spanish lodger had poked fun atmy student’s very English habit of putting milk in his tea, then asked himwhat time he finished college so that he could make him a cup of propercoffee. It has to be said at this point that the Spanish guy makes coffee byadding boiling water to £1 instant shop brand coffee, then squirts glutinouscondensed milk into said concoction.
Clearly my BIMM student, having seen this ‘Spanish’ coffee makingtechnique, was not too keen on the threatened afternoon coffee session andtold me he was glad to be going home for the weekend so he couldcomfortably avoid said ordeal and continue to make tea with milk, in thatbizarre English way of ours. follow me on twitter @robert_nemeth

Boundary divisionsbetween the gardens ofpost-war houses usually
consist of nothing more thanwooden fences. I was a littlesurprised therefore, whenregular reader, Malcolm Pither,showed me the gardens ofGoldstone Lane.
Goldstone Lane is the roadthat runs directly to the westof the old Goldstone FootballGround (now the GoldstoneRetail Park) in Hove. The areawas once home to Goldstone Farmthat was leased by John JacksonClark from 1877. The word ‘Goldstone’refers to a large rock, thought tohave been a Druidic altar, that isdisplayed in Hove Park. Clark is saidto have helped to locate it in 1900,years after its burial by anotherfarmer who was sick of sightseers.Its current location was assuredwhen Hove Park opened in 1906.
The farmhouse was built inaround 1872 after the previousbuilding was removed to make wayfor Wilbury Road. The building, laterknown as Goldstone House, was asymmetrical brick-built double-fronted mansion which was characterised bygenerous sash windows with voussoir lintels. It was accessed from GoldstoneLane but situated on land that is now occupied by a series of low bungalowson Fonthill Road. Its elevated position afforded views across the farm and, inparticular, the adjacent Goldstone Meadow.
1901 is a significant date for local football fans as it was the year thatClark leased Goldstone Meadow to Hove F.C. One stipulation was that viewsfrom Goldstone House over the new ground had to be retained, which allowedhim to watch matches. It wasn’t long before the newly-founded Brighton &Hove Albion called the Goldstone home as well.
Goldstone House was served by a terracotta wall, similar to that whichgraces the Metropole Hotel in Brighton. The house was demolished in 1955but the wall survives. Despite the removal of its steps, other sections are inperfect condition, as can be seen from the gardens of Nos. 33 and 35Goldstone Lane. On close inspection, the wall is perhaps finer than theMetropole’s. After all, its plinth is more pronounced, its fluted balusters moreattractive, and its shade of orange more alive.
Although Clark did not build Goldstone House, he may well have added thewall. As a farmer, baker, builder, councillor, magistrate, freemason and friendof the Albion, Clark was a great man. One cliché people used to say was: “My three year old is better atoperating the video than I am.” It’s a cliché that’s out of date, and needsupdating to Skype or Sky+ or whatever. What is certainly true is the
way Youngest™ and The Boy take for granted – and can operate – quiteadvanced technology.
Now this isn’t going to just be me being some Luddite curmudgeon. I’m notechnophobe. In fact, rather than the argument that technology can interferewith their development, I feel that the two go hand in hand. I reckonYoungest™’s fine motor skills have been honed from stroking an iPhone screenin order to see a picture of him and his brother eating lollies – it’s an incentive.
Likewise, I once discovered a tiny piece of paper on the kitchen table with thesentence, “Supr Marea is ded”. When I recovered from the fact that it wassimultaneously cute and chilling, I realised this was how The Boy was learning towrite. Weird messages based on Nintendo DS games. Elsewhere I’ve always beenmore likely to find “Humungosoor – powr levl” than “The cat sat on the mat”. Thefact that his writing has come on in ‘leaps and bounds’, is fitting I guess if he’sbeen inspired by platform games. He’s moved on now to writing his own lengthystories, some of which are scribbled onpaper, and some – on his owninstigation – as Word docs.
Technology’s not all positive,of course, but some of that’smore me than them. I hateseeing other parents inplaygrounds spending alltheir time checkingsmartphones – but I’mguilty of that too. I alsomust have said “I’m justchecking my emails” sooften that it became akind of all-in-one word:“jossjackinmeemales” in themouth of The Boy.
You can’t uninvent thewheel. They live in a worldwhere a favourite programmecan be found instantly ‘onrecorded’ and the Sat Nav,with its “bear left” and “turnaround where possible” haslong since stopped beingcommented upon. I’m notreally that nostalgic forgetting lost.
Technology doesn’t makethem stop wanting to draw, run around outside, jump in puddles (oh if only)and enjoy books. It’s simply another option, another media. I definitely don’tthink that it interferes with other development, quite the opposite. My mainniggling fear is if they grow up with a distorted sense of entitlement, feelinghard done by if they don’t have the latest gadget. That’s the side to keep inperspective.
“T ell me another one!” Mychild demands as wesnuggle up after reading
a bedtime story. She doesn’twant another story. She actuallymeans ‘ask’ me another one (shegets muddled with words). Shewants me to ask her anotherhard math question.
“What is 100 plus 97?” I askthe five year old. She beamsproudly back: “197!” Hardlycontaining her glee at howincredibly clever she is being. Ihave managed to teach her thatif you add a number onto 00sthen the answer will alwaysinclude the number you areadding on. I have finallymanaged to teach mychild something. Ideserve an award. Sheactually listened to mefor once – this isamazing.
If she would justlisten to me again,perhaps even regularly, I could teach her many, many useful things – how tochange a loo roll, all sorts. Ideally I’d like her to listen to my teachings on howto use a knife and fork and how to get what you want in life without crying.
“Mummy, what is 100 and 49?” That’s the answer, not a sum, I tell her.Okay, so it seems she hasn’t quite got the hang of it yet. “Oh I got muggled,what’s 100 plus 49?” Even though I’ve told her the formula for the sum, she'sstill delighted to ask me these incredibly tricky sums, and is still impressedwhen I can add up 100 plus 49. She came home from school saying “onlyreally clever people can add up in the one hundreds”.
I wanted to show her that maths is mainly brilliant patterns and that youjust have to learn the patterns. So here we are now, unable to go to sleepbecause my child is barking out sums excitedly. “Ask me another!” I’mrunning out of sums, “Um, what’s 500 plus 83?” With her eyes almost comingout of their sockets, she exclaims, “583?!” You might think this is incrediblysimple, as some kids may have been playing piano with one foot whileworking on Pi since the age of three, but I am so proud of my little one.Mainly just for listening to me for once. Secondly, for being interested inmaths and thirdly, for understanding the pattern. It might be a simplebreakthrough but simple things can make solid foundations. I am so happy;she is so happy. If I can just build her confidence up, one day she could fulfilthe dream...of my daughter becoming an accountant.
She asks my boyfriend to ask her one. He replies: “Okay, what’s 117 plus56?” Oh, reality bites, the adding up in my head was that my child was agenius who read equations at bedtime instead of stories. But no, the reality isthat my child just understands about adding onto zeros.

city centre apartment or heavenlysea-front flat but are concernedabout the length of time that youhave remaining on the lease.
2) You are looking to buy a flatwhich does not have much longer torun on the lease.
3) You are considering purchasinga leasehold property but your lenderwill not give you a mortgagebecause the term of the lease is lessthan they require it to be (usuallyunder 55 years).
If this sounds familiar, you maybe wondering if it’s possible toextend the lease to avoid theseproblems. You will be pleased toknow that legislation gives an
individual leaseholder a statutoryright to extend their lease by anadditional 90 years at a ‘peppercorn’rent (zero ground rent). Theadditional 90 years is in addition tothe present unexpired term.
The basic qualifying criteria arethat you as the leaseholder musthave a long lease (not less than 21years) of a flat or house and youmust have owned the property for atleast two years. These criteria canbe circumvented on the sale, as thisis a right to extend it can be passedon by a seller to a buyer.
A landlord is only obliged to grantthis where a formal notice is served– there is no obligation to complywith an informal request. Somelandlords may avoid a directrequest, perhaps because they knowthat a lease which is continuallydecreasing in length, is potentiallyincreasing the cost of the extensionor they might offer shorter
extensions and in the process,increase the ground rent from theamount presently payable. Although,where a landlord does grant anextension they will receive a lumpsum in consideration for agreeing.
The process of extending a leasebegins by serving a formal notice onthe landlord, however a lot of workneeds to be carried out before theprocess can start. For example,leaseholders should appoint a valuerto advise on price and prepare worstand best-case price scenarios.
Once the tenant’s initial noticehas been served, it may be assignedwith the lease when the flat is sold. If you are looking to sell, theadvantage is that the purchaser willbe able to proceed immediately,without having to meet the twoyears ownership qualification.
