LOVED UP> Brighton loves Disco Pete!

Latest 7 had thepleasure of meeting this

colourful character,Michael Stanley, on thestreet this week.

Michael is currentlyhomeless and living in aBed and Breakfast. Aharrowing childhood led toproblems with addiction inhis adult life, and relatedhealth problems. However, his positive attitude is asbright as the suit on hisback, as he revealed: “I’m arecovering addict and have been clean for ten years, I nolonger do heroine, I spent the money on this suit instead! I’mjust a lascivious homeless person having fun!”.

A truly inspiring soul, smiling in the face of adversity.

ONLY IN BRIGHTON

The giggles. They’re the best. And for some reason theyseem to turn up in my house with the sunshine. That

happytired feeling that allows me to practically fall overlaughing as I contemplate what blowing my nose might soundlike when heard from outside of my head.

I do think the longer days mean that the world can seembrighter in more ways than one. Even if it’s raining, thatcoseted cosy blanket of navy darkness has yet to arrive. It’snot night time, which means that period after I leave work andbefore I have to think sensible thoughts about dinner and billsand how to change a duvet cover has yet to arrive. Giving freereign to silliness, the possibility of drinking in daylight hours, and simply space to mull over the minutiae of the world and itsridiculousness.

There are lots of things to be serious about at the moment:the future of the NHS, the constant attempted nullification ofthe horrific plight of refugees, those bills that keep turning upon Facebook as being ‘slipped through’ parliament. So whenyou do get the chance – seize the laugh.

Disco Pete is a loved legend in Brighton, having been aregular at club nights and festivals in the city since the

1960s. Sadly his dancing has been put on hold, as 79 year oldPete, had a health scare last year. He began shakinguncontrollably and a subsequent hospital appointmentrevealed that he may have Parkinson's disease.

In a recent interview with The Argus, he said: “I don't wantto give up dancing because the festivals are starting. I want togo back but the doctors say I shouldn't be dancing, if they cansort out my balance I will be back!"

As a tribute, Same Sky Brighton, created a larger than lifeversion of him to join in with the Children's Parade, as it wasassumed he wouldn’t be able to attend this year. However, intrue die hard party spirit, Pete delighted fans by turning up inhis wheelchair!

Latest 7 wishes you a speedy recovery, and we hope to seeyou out dancing again very soon!Tell us who you love, email [email protected]

In the final week of Brighton Festival, the Royal PavilionGarden will be transformed by Dr Blighty, a largescale,

immersive outdoor experience inspired by a special chapterin the city's history.

More than a million men travelled from India to fight forthe Allies during the First World War, and between 1914and 1916, over 2,000 Indian soldiers wounded on theWestern Front were brought to a temporary hospitalhoused on Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Estate.

Dr Blighty brings the experiences of the soldiers – andthe locals who came to care for them – movingly back tolife via a number of immersive walkthrough installationsacross the Royal Pavilion Estate. Animated by actors andenhanced by ambient soundscapes and theatricalinterludes inspired by letters the soldiers sent back home, the event will seek to capture the essence of the hospitaland those who recuperated here.

For four nights, a spectacular afterdark production willincorporate video projections on the Royal Pavilion, evoking memories of a very distant home for the soldierconvalescents, and two special concerts at Brighton Domecombining classical music traditions from East and West.Created by performance company Nutkhut, led by artistic director Ajay Chhabra, Dr Blighty is broughttogether by a creative team that includes designer TomPiper (Tower of London poppies).

CommemorationsSun 29 May, 4pmRoyal Pavilion GardenFREEDr Blighty and Brighton Festival are brought to a close witha special installation, the laying of thousands of diya lampsto commemorate the soldiers’ stay in the city. It coincideswith a wreath laying ceremony in Royal Pavilion Garden atthe Indian Gate, and the unveiling of a Blue Plaquehonouring Subedar Mir Dast (awarded the Victoria Cross atthe Royal Pavilion by King George V).

Organised by Davinder Dhillon, from the Chattri Group, this commemoration also marks the departure of the Indiansoldiers from Brighton's military hospitals 100 years ago.

Nutkhut have taken the diyas as one of the symbols oftheir project; these handmade lamps, which would have beencarried by the Indian soldiers, are used for celebrations, commemorations and special occasions. The soldiers wouldhave used these pots to provide light in the darkness of warand as a small reminder of home and family; in addition theymay have provided the light needed to share experiencesand write and read precious letters to and from home. All this talk of mayoral elections has got me feeling prettyleft out on Brighton's behalf. What other candidates are

out there suitable for the role in our city? So get your thinkingcap on as I present to you, as exhaustive a list as this wordcount will allow of four alternative candidates to be the mayorof Brighton.1. Fatboy SlimPractically married to thecity already, Mr Cook wouldsurely be a popular choice. He has an exemplary trackrecord of collaborating withothers, and the campaignliterature basically writes itself: "We've come a long way babytogether. Through the hard times and the good." Hisopponents however would seek to smear him over pastassociations with Rizzle Kicks.2. Mary BeardA Brightonian she may not be, but Britain’s best historian isawesome and clever and nice – someone whose spiritembodies everything great about Brighton. Also, props toanyone who can do a piece to camera standing next to anenormously phallic Roman statue without giggling. 3. Super HansMatt King, who plays the hilariously horrible Peep Showfavourite is another famous Brighton resident. I would, however, demand that all mayoral duties were performed inthe character of Super Hans. Imagine him having to make aspeech about cycle lanes while on a savage comedown.4. Prince’s ghostThis is what it sounds like when seagulls cry. If ever there werea city to blaze the trail of having the first ever Mayor not tophysically exist, it’s Brighton. It would be one nonstop festivalof salacious outfits and killer guitar riffs with ‘The PoltergeistFormerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince’ incharge.

When merry lads are playing, fa la la la la… well youprobably know the rest. The truth is that May is my

busiest month of the year, the month that you are most likelyto see me out on the town and at the end of the month youcan even catch me on the Live Food stage at the Brighton andHove Food and Drink Festival.

The first part though is filled with the excitement of theBrighton Festival and of course theBrighton Fringe. This year is not onlythe 50th anniversary but also my30th festival. If you start looking atthe numbers you will see that I have, over the years, seen a huge numberof shows. Many of them memorableand of course a few memorable forall the wrong reasons.

I never underestimate the fact that as a reviewer I am verylucky to be able to see so much of the festival, concerts, theatre, arts of all kinds and these are the things that I love todo. Even if I did not write reviews I would be a theatre goerand arts lover, although with a small budget I would probablyhave to cherry pick the things I see, choosing events that Ialready have knowledge of or those for which I have readreviews. This of course informs the way I review, knowing thatreaders may well make a decision about what they choose topay to see based on what I say.

As a reviewer I try not to cherry pick things that I expect Iwill like. I enjoy seeing a wide range of events andperformances and I always hope that I will enjoy them, butknow that sometimes I will be disappointed or in extremecases even leave angry.

Seeing the bad informs my opinion of what is good.Everything lies on a scale and my job is to give a personal butinformed opinion of where something sits on that scale. Ofcourse taste plays a part, but taste must always be temperedby honesty, honestly!

This year’s Brighton Fringe Festival launched with aspectacular fireworks display at The Warren. The free

event, which took place on Friday 6th May, saw fireworkslaunched from the top of St Peter’s Church.

Julian Caddy, Brighton Fringe’s managing director, said: “AsEngland’s largest arts festival it feels only right to start withsomething massive and spectacular from the top of one ofBrighton’s most iconic buildings in the centre of town. I’mreally pleased to be working with the lovely people at TheWarren who are helping make the start of this year’s BrightonFringe an incredible one.”

When I was little, I remember watching The Bill on ITVand wanting to be a police woman when I grew up. I

think that phase only lasted a few months and then I wantedto be an archeologist. To this day I still change my mind quiteregularly about what I want to be when I grow up! The otherday I bumped into my friend Tom Cotcher who played AlanWoods in The Bill from 19921996 but is now a painter, author and an actor. Tom and I managed to grab a coffee andhave a good catch up.

When did your interest in painting start? It started 7 years ago. I was asked to paint a little picture forcharity at the JAG Gallery in Brighton. It raised £40 and theyencouraged me to paintmore. I had my own ArtGallery in Kemp Town for awhile called Artscape. I nowhave my studio at home.Recently I've just beenchosen for the Director’sChoice at the 'Not the RoyalAcademy' at The LlewellynAlexander Gallery, oppositethe Old Vic Theatre inLondon. My most popularpaintings are what I call ‘naive Matisse interiors’. Matissebecause they are colourful and naive because I don't knowwhat I'm doing!

You've also written a new book haven't you? It's called 'I'm clear. What's it like up your end?' It's anautobiographical account of a jobbing actor and things don’talways go according to plan. It's meant to be humorous sohopefully people will laugh, but it's also true. The title isn’texplained until the last page! It’s available on Amazon Kindle. You can view Tom Cotcher’s art on www.tomcotcherart.com

With a new chef at the helm of TheRestaurant at Drakes Hotel it seemed

like a good opportunity to return to one of myfavourite dining rooms. And with new facescomes change, all of which is forthe better. The dining room hasbeen given a new look andfriendly new faces add to a verywarm and relaxed reception. The food too has been given anew lease of life and after anexcellent cocktail in the upstairs bar, my guest, the lovely Ms L, and I headed down for whatwas to be a memorable feast of delights.

First out an amuse bouche of searedmackerel that was, to be frank, as big as astarter in some places, and twice as good. Thebread too was exemplary, brilliant flavours andtextures coupled with good butter.

Ms L started with an amazing terrine of porkneck with leeks and truffle, a confit egg yolkand pickled chanterelles. She was silent withjoy, an unusual status for her and on tastingher dish I could see why. I chose the sea troutceviche with crab beignets and was equallydelighted and impressed.

The fish was perfectly cured and theaddition of a cucumber and dill granita keptthe dish light and refreshing. This was a goodthing as my next choice was the squab pigeonwhich was big in flavours, perfectly cookedbreast matched with a hazelnut crusted leg, ablood cream (black pudding puree) cavalo neroall lighted by roast quince and a juniperscented jus. This was accomplished classicism

delivered in a contemporary style.Ms L chose the roast brill with a lemon ash

crust. There had been a leek ash on her firstdish that we both liked and this lemon ash was

truly delicious, as werethe plump cockles andmussels and the lemonand caper buttercoated sea vegetables. To say that she washappy would be an

understatement although I think it was theshellfish that stole the limelight in her dish.

We should have been too full for puddingbut a job is a job, even when the chef sendsyou a predessert dessert of a pretty lemonposset topped with sweet crumbs and edibleflowers, which of course we polished offbefore pudding proper. Ms L was beating thetable Meg Ryan style as she devoured herpapouasie chocolate and passion fruit delicewith orange sorbet. It was better than good. Iwas equally delighted with a delicately fragrantviolet souffle with lemon curd icecream.Maître d' Anthony looked after us well andselected great wines by the glass to match ourvery different choices.

This was cooking of the very highest order, ingredients of the highest quality andexemplary service in one of the nicest roomsin town and I cannot wait to return. The Restaurant at Drakes, 4344 Marine Parade, Brighton, BN2 1PE, 01273 696934drakesofbrighton.com

Only a year ago I decidedthat, despite the skills

shown and the thrillsexperienced, circus art basedshows were not for me. Lastnight I discovered that I waswrong. The Ricochet Projecthave created a work thattakes those skills and usesthem in an exquisitelyartistic way, an aerial andfloor based acrobatic balletthat had me rapt from themoment the lights came upand exposed them entwinedon a trapeze, dressed in drabday wear, to the finalmoment when once againdressed they resumed their“ordinary” personas. > Eagulls – Leeds five piece are back with a newalbum & perform at The Great Escape

The Leeds fivepiece were initially formed in 2010 by HenryRuddel (drums) and guitarist Mark Goldsworthy (aka

Goldy). They then recruited Liam Matthews on guitar, beforeTom Kelly arrived on bass, followed by singer George Mitchell.

They initially acquired notoriety for a letter they publishedwhich comprehensively rubbished contemporary bands andthe music scene in which they inhabit, something that Georgenow regrets: "It was like at the time nobody really knew us.Even now they don't knowus, our sense of humour, stufflike that. It was like walkinginto a party with people youdon't know, with one friendthat you're really close to,and saying a joke that only heor she would understand.Yeah. It really backfired, andthe party turned stale. Quickly." he deadpans.

With a love of postpunk and ‘80s and ‘90s sounds ingeneral, the Eagulls debut album of 2013 picked up a lot ofinterest, despite their name being a rather odd one. "It's like adeterrent. Why would I want to listen to a band with thatname? You know what I mean?"

Their new album, Ullages, an anagram of Eagulls, is a moremelodic, slightly less punky affair, but which shows the bandto be one with potential staying power. Ullage is a word todescribe the amount by which a container falls short of beingfull, a term used in the pub and brewage industry. "It'sbasically just another way of looking at pessimism andoptimism," he says. "You could look at the album just like mostpeople: 'it's like the dregs of the bottle, or whatever'. But, it'sreally a bit of both. It's a measurement of what is left to eitherfill or what is already gone. It's just a metaphorical way oflooking at the word."The Great Escape, Horatios, Fri 20 May, 11pm

Precious few words, and so much to see, so here are threegreat shows this week for your consideration.

The Marian Consort have been acclaimed for theirexpressive storytelling by TheSunday Times and SinfiniMusic, so they should be theperfect group to accompanythe tumultuous story of CarloGesualdo. The Renaissancecomposer wrote someexquisite music (stream 'Tristisest anima mea' if you want ataste) but was also a murderer, having killed his first wife andher lover after discovering some infidelity. Brighton EarlyMusic Festival cofounder Clare Norburn will be recountingthe story in a dramatic monologue this Friday while the MarianConsort perform his choral music, melding drama and music inan enticing evening at Brighton Festival. (Breaking The Rules, Fri 20 May, All Saints Church, 7.30pm)

New Zealand company Trick of the Light Theatre havescooped a swarm of awards for The Bookbinder, which sees anold man telling an apprentice a story, told through popupbook to puppetry, with storytelling and live action chucked infor good measure. The dark fairytale had a sell out run inEdinburgh and this Brighton Fringe show is the first stop ontheir UK tour so you can impress your friends in a toldyousokind of way, while actually enjoying a good show too. (The Bookbinder, 2228 May, Sweet Dukebox, 3pm)

Finally, the semiautobiographical interactive show NowListen To Me Very Carefully, which chaotically recreates themovie Terminator 2. Creator Andy Roberts estimates that he'sseen the film about 238 times (it guided him through hisadolescence) so this Fringe show utilises standup comedy, storytelling and participation to explore the blockbuster'sintegral role in his life. (2324 May, Bootworks Theatre, 8pm)

BRIGHTON’S ARTY

Got a German dictionaryto hand? No worries, let

me define ‘Unheimlich’ foryou. It’s an adjective withthree meanings: ‘weird, uncanny’; ‘familiar, yetunfamiliar’; and finally‘concealed, out of sight’. It’salso the title of Holly Rozier’snew installation at theCorridor Gallery from 1 June.

If you haven’t experiencedHolly’s incredible softsculptures at the OpenStudios on the seafront thenexpect to experiencesimultaneous delight andrepulsion. She describes thisspecial sitespecific show as:

“A range of different scaleanthropomorphic forms thatlook less ‘human’ than ever, dealing with much moreundeniably unifying anduniversally ‘human’ emotionsthan I have ever exploredbefore.”

Roughly translated thatmeans you will be awed bythe way this artist transformseveryday fabrics – twisting, shaping, dyeing andembellishing them – intoforms that evoke a sense ofinternal organs and unseenelements of the human form.Until 3 July.www.artymagazines.com
