O h, how I wanted an iPhone.I wanted one more than Ican express in words. After
all I have been an Apple fan forlonger than I care to rememberwith more Mac appliances thanany sensible person wouldrequire or indeed want.
Sadly my Vodaphone accountupdated the week before theyannounced that they too wouldbe supporting the iPhone. I wascross to say the least. No, I wasfurious, I was going to have towait the best part of 18 monthsbefore I could have the shinyblack thing in my sweaty palm.
Of course, it did mean that bythe time I got it it would be thesecond generation model withall the latest upgrades and soon, but that was not thepoint. I wanted it and Iwanted it there and then.
Eighteen months on and Inow have one and I love itvery much. It’s a gloriouslittle slice of loveliness, shinyand slick and shouting at meall the bloody time. Yes, the thing I wanted in my life so much, is a nag, acarping, pestering, relentless nag.
OK, I do love it, but my god is it persistant. I guess I hadn’t realised thatonce I had synced it up with my various email accounts that it would bebleeping and pinging at me all day and, yes, all night too. Ping, a letter,ping a message, ping a Facebook notification, ping a tweet...
I have found out how to turn the noise off so that I do get some peacewhen I choose to and although I feel nagged it has removed that moment ofgloom when I hit my desk and discover 75 emails, some of which are trulyirrelevant and often irreverent junk. Dismissing junk as I go has becomepart of my daily routine, although it does mean that I have taken to walkinginto lamp posts.
Mr R has now taken to telling me off when I respond to its every beep,ping and ring. It’s like having a very demanding child and I know exactlyhow I would deal with that. Straight to the naughty corner, hands on headand no backchat. Now where is that off button?

news>UK PROPERTY MARKETOFF TO A SOLID STARTThe UK property market hasstarted the year on a very solidfooting, according to new figuresfrom Hamptons International, oneof the UK’s premier residentialestate agents.
The agency, which compares itsmonthly performance figures toprovide insight into the coalface ofthe property market, hasannounced that all key “front-end”indicators have improvedcompared with last year.
Market activity summary:
• Market appraisals up 19 per centcompared with January 2010
• Available stock up 19 per centcompared with January 2010
• Buyer registrations up 10 percent since January 2010 and 23per cent since January 2009
• Viewings up 13 per centcompared with January 2010
At a time when mortgage financeand economic uncertainty haveseverely hampered activity in theproperty market, the latest figuresfrom Hamptons suggest there areencouraging signs of improvement.
“Our January figures confirm thatthere has been an uplift in activityin the property market this year,”says Marc Goldberg, Head of Salesat Hamptons International. “The factthat we have seen notable increasesacross market appraisal requests,stock levels and buyer registrations– all of which are key indicators –compared with last year goes a longway in showing that the propertymarket is getting back on its feet. www.hamptons-int.com

T he closest that mostmembers of thepublic get to the
planning process isobjecting to anapplication. But in thecase of the derelict RoyalAlex, letters of supportflooded in and theapplication was approvedby the PlanningCommittee unanimously.
The Royal AlexandraHospital for Sick Childrenon Dyke Road opened in1881 to the designs of ThomasLainson, an architect whose workincludes Middle Street Synagogue,Adelaide Mansions and Brooker Hall(now Hove Museum). It is defined bya soaring brick façade with enclosedstone balconies.
The site itself is roughlytriangular and consists of aneclectic mix of charmingoutbuildings including a ratherlarge rendered Victorian villaand a stonemason’s cottage.These two structures could beturned into dream homes sowhy did the area’s tworespected amenity societies, the MCHA (Montpelier and Clifton HillAssociation) and CMPCA (Clifton Montpelier Powis Community Alliance), notfight the latest proposed scheme – which involve these buildings’ demolition– tooth and nail?
Appropriate buildings are rarely built because those who care are simplynot equipped with the tools to mount a robust defence. Under thechairmanship of Mick Hamer, the MCHA has done a wonderful job atbargaining for the building’s famous façade to be retained and restored. Thecrux of the matter is that Taylor Wimpey paid too much for the site and onlyan inappropriate scheme will go some way towards mitigating their losses.With nothing left to bargain with, residents had little choice but to supportthese plans in case something worse comes along.
One resident who certainly is not happy is my friend Philippa Sankey, wholives on Clifton Hill. Her garden and those of all of her neighbours are set tobe overlooked and, quite frankly, dominated by a monstrous replacementstructure. I do not need to describe the architectural style of the proposedstructure. It looks like every other builder-designed property that has beenbuilt in Brighton and Hove over the past 15 years.
To end on a positive note, I am convinced that pre-emptive planning briefsfrom Brighton and Hove City Council are key to working out what really isbest for a site before large sums of money change hands. With a plan inplace in advance, an appropriate value for a site can be calculated. I am not a great fan of shopping and generally loathe high street chainstores, as much for some of the people working there as for the seethingthrongs shopping there. Big shopping malls make me want to slit my wrists
and the thought of spending a Saturday afternoon in one of them is utterlydepressing. Even when in New York at the end of last year, myself and friendMiss T only managed two hours in one shop, then swerved them for the rest ofour time there. I have to admit that this was partly to do with our hung-overheads being unable to cope with bright lights and colours simultaneously.
We did go into Macy’s in order to make a purchase for a friend of ours backin England, then walked straight out, having failed to make the purchase, sofrantic and claustrophobic was the atmosphere. I actually like New Yorkbecause of its lack of shopping malls and believe the mall to be the work ofSatan himself. This is also the reason that Ilike Cuba so much, as there are noadvertisements – apart fromones for Fidel himself – andeven if there were, there’sprecious little to buy, apartfrom rum, cigars and coffee.
When Churchill Square gotits makeover a few years back,certain shops on Western Roadappeared to suffer, thenrecover quite quickly.
I’ve never really shopped inChurchill Square and have noidea what’s in there nowadays.So far this year, I have notbeen in there once, apart fromto visit a certain newsagent inorder to buy a birthday cardfor The Big Daughter. Eventhen I left frustrated andempty-handed, in spite of thefact that I was twice offered a giant cut-price bar of chocolatethat I had no desire to buy. Ileft vowing never to darken itsdoors again.
Last week, on my way tothe launderette, I walked theentire length of Preston Street,from the seafront to WesternRoad, and was astonished tosee how many abandonedrestaurants there are now.
I figured it was a case of‘Survival of the Fittest’. Eitherthat, or Cameron’s ‘Big Society’is now so obese it’s been grounded.
A friend of mine who has owned a quirky restaurant in central Brighton forthe last 26 years is closing in a few weeks because his landlady has chosento put up the rent by almost 50 per cent. Perhaps she should take a leisurelystroll up Preston Street. She could enjoy a wholesome McDonald’s when shegets to the top...

In my gardenI thought that after a few months of freezingweather that has put me off working in my owngarden I should venture out and see what wasgoing on. To my joy the signs of better months tocome were already showing: two of my Clematishad started to push out some large, sturdylooking shoots. Some are even getting big enoughto start forming what will soon become leaves.The hardier of the herbaceous plants wereshowing large, round fleshy buds; covered in dewthey looked like clusters of green and purplecrystals against the cold dark soil.
Unfortunately, these encouraging signs alsomean that a little bit of work is needed to ensurethe plants get the best start and give you abeautiful display in the warmer months when youcan linger in the garden to enjoy them. The mostboisterous of the shrubs can be given a hardprune now to maintain the size and shape youwant them to have and to give them chance togrow large new stems to bear this year’s flowerson. These shrubs include plants such as rosesand Buddleia. Cut them back as far as you wantto and don’t be scared, their flowers may lookdainty but they are strong plants and will put onlots of growth this year. Just make sure you aretaking them back to a strong bud and then makea cut just above it. The Clematis are a little moretricky as you need to know which type you have.If you are like me and have one that flowersprofusely from summer right through to theautumn on stems that are produced the sameyear, then now is the time to cut them and againyou need to be a bit brutal. Take them right backto the lowest strong pair of buds. Because theyflower on the same year’s growth, if you don’t cutthem back you will get a big flowerless area atthe base. The jewel-like herbaceous plants thatare coming through don’t need quite so muchattention. Simply remove any of last year’sgrowth that may still be attached. They wouldhowever be very thankful of a good mulch withwell-rotted compost or horse manure.

T iles are a classic, hard-wearingchoice for kitchen and bathroomfloors. But they can also look
great in hallways, conservatories,and even living areas. This week,Latest Interiors brings you thelowdown on floor tiles.
Which tile where?Flagstones, limestone, slate,ceramics, encaustic or even quarry:the sheer range of materials andfinishes is eye-watering. Dependingon which tile you choose, and how itis laid, a tiled floor can bring light,texture, depth or a feeling of spaceinto a room. Small rooms can benefitfrom light-reflecting, paler, plain tiles,and larger sizes, or square tiles laidon the diagonal, can make a roomseem bigger. Large, light areas cantake darker colours, and texture willhelp add depth or define an area.Contrasting grout – darker grout withpaler tiles, or vice versa, will add acontemporary finish.
A (well) tiled floor looks great, butthere are other advantages too:safe, hygienic and easy to clean,they even provide a layer of noiseand heat insulation. And of course ifyou opt for underfloor heating, theyeven feel cosy in winter.
Natural stoneNatural stone tiles give a beautifulfinish. Limestone – a soft,sedimentary stone – is great in hallsand kitchens (make sure you use agood sealant, though). Popular withdesigners, it comes in a variety ofshades from parchment to a softhoney colour. Travertine is similar tolimestone but has a more variegatedappearance, and is also available ina variety of forms, includingpolished, honed and tumbled. Marble(formed when limestone is super-heated under pressure over manyyears) gives a high-gloss polish,adding depth and light to rooms.Slate, granite and quartz are also

back in vogue – save the darkercolours for light rooms and bigspaces though.
Ceramic tilesAs versatile as stone, ceramic tilescan be more affordable, easier towork with, and offer a greater choiceof colour and finish. Older Brightonand Hove properties may still haveoriginal encaustic and ceramic tileson doorsteps, in kitchens andhallways. If you’re interested inrestoring this feature to your home,ask around neighbours and see ifanyone has the originals to help getthe look right.
Unlike natural stone where colourand texture may very, ceramics offeruniform, clean lines – perfect for acontemporary look. Terracotta,encaustic and mosaic tiles areperfect for halls, bathrooms andconservatories. A smoother, uniformfinish can also make them easier toclean and maintain.
