Mayor Scott Smith Unveils iMesaMesa Mayor Scott Smith launched iMesa at his annual Mayor’s Breakfast in January. iMesa is an exciting new initiative designed to invigorate Mesa through transformative community projects. iMesa is a grassroots improvement effort where residents submit, vote and comment on ideas that transform the community. The ideas are collected by Mayor and Council appointed committees and are discussed in online forums. all of the citizen input is collected through a web based community accessible through mobile devices and Facebook.
“Mesa is at a crossroads and we need to see how we are going to deal with both our current financial challenges and our future,” Mayor Scott Smith said. “iMesa is a tool to help make those decisions.”
Citizen committees will work through 2011 to formulate a comprehensive project plan for transformative community projects based on citizen input. Committee recommendations will be reported to City Council in 2012.
Join the conversation today and tell us your iMesa ideas. Log on to http://www.mesaaz.gov/imesa (click on feedback tab), http://imesa.mesaaz.gov, http://www.facebook.com/MayorScottSmith (click on feedback tab) or on your mobile device go to http://www.mesaaz.gov and click on iMesa.
Neighborhood Watch Programa neighborhood watch community has many benefits, but it is also a terrific way to get to know your neighbors. If you would like more information on the Neighborhood Watch Program in your neighborhood or how to start one, please call Terri Teten, Crime Prevention officer for Mesa Police Superstition Division, 480-644-3692.
The City of Mesa Police reminds residents to remove valuable from parked cars and to keep the garage doors closed as a crime prevention method.
Residents are also reminded to use the following phone numbers when needed:

Summer in arizona, with high temperatures and monsoon storms... a typical forecast for July. Time to make sure your properties’ waterways & drainages are clear of debris, ready for potential heavy rains. Identify any potential issues and rectify, or propose repairs prior to the rains. Trees are susceptible to winds and heavy rains, if not maintained properly. Check tree stakes and wiring, avoid girdling around trunks and branches, thin and shape crown as needed, to prevent tree loss or damage. Make sure emergency contact information and emergency storm clean up procedures are in place, prior to storm events.
Prune & shape select plants as needed, however over pruned, heat sensitive plants may not recover. Irrigation during July should be done in the early evening hours through the early morning hours. This will allow more water penetration into the soil, getting to the roots prior to evaporation. Multiple start times may be required, to achieve the necessary deep soaking and avoid excessive water runoff / loss. However, know the capabilities and limitations of your irrigation systems. Some systems may not have the capability for multiple start times. Finally, don’t forget to fertilize your annuals prior to taking that refreshing dip in the pool.

All about the baby steps……
as americans we are always looking for the quick fixes to weight loss. While we would all like to shed a few pounds, my biggest concern is how long will the weight stay off? Depending on which route you take to try and lose the weight may depend on the outcome. The low calorie or restricted diet may yield great results initially, but once you resume eating normally, your body may go right back to where it was and all that hard work would be for nothing. I recommend trying to make small lifestyle changes and start slow. When it comes to healthy eating there are a lot of things you can do to make great progress. If you drink 5 sodas in a day, quitting cold turkey may not be reasonable. Make a plan to wean yourself off and give yourself a couple of weeks to do so, drop down to 3 a day for a week, then 2 a day and then eventually none if that is your goal.
There are approximately 3,500 calories in a pound of fat. In order to lose 1 pound a week, which is what is recommended, you would need to have a calorie deficit of 500 calories per day for the entire week. That means you would consume 500 calories less than what you burn in a day. Cutting 500 calories per day is very reasonable.
Fit TipSubmitted by Jennifer Graffice, Lifestyle Director
Eat more fruits and vegetables and less processed snacks, cutting out simple things like heavy salad dressings like ranch and choosing a lower calorie version could be a great start. Reducing your soda or beer consumption could cut an extra few hundred calories. Instead of fast food, try Subway, Port of Subs or a Market fresh sandwich type item. These small steps could be the additional 500 calories right there in just that one meal.
Slowly but surely, the weight will start to come off. and if you remain consistent… in a short few weeks you will start to see results and not only will you look better but more importantly you will feel better and be healthier for it. In the next Vision, I will talk about the other way to eliminate 500 calories, it doesn’t all have to be about the diet…stay tuned.

Community Spotlight…
Summer has definitely arrived---it’s really hot out! Many retirees have escaped the heat and are vis-iting family and friends in other parts of the country. others have made the convenient drive into the White Mountains to enjoy the cooler temperatures.
So…what are the rest of us doing? Well, we are keeping busy with all the retiree activities. our regular meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of the month, June through September. on July 26th, our own Mickey Veich will present on alcohol, e.g., beer, wine, spirits, varietals, etc., dealing with regulations and laws he enforced at the federal level. Basically, he will present the rules as dictated to the industry by the federal government. His presentation will include defini-tions and historical information dealing with bourbon, scotch, gin, vodka, and wine and related federal taxing requirements.
on august 23rd, the speaker will be Robert Brinton, President and CEo of the Mesa Conven-tion and Visitors Bureau. This dynamic community leader was a founding father and past president of the Cactus League Baseball association and was named ‘Man of the Year’ for the City of Mesa in 2009. This should be an excit-ing and informative program.
on the second Tuesday of each month during the summer, Susan Grunbaum has organized group lunches at popular restaurants in the Mesa area. Information about these lunch venues will be sent to retirees via email.
The Las Sendas Retirees Tennis Group will continue to play throughout the summer on Thursday mornings; however they will begin at 8:00 am rather than 9:00 am.
Finally, Don Pike will be organizing hiking trips during the summer months. In order to avoid the daytime heat, these adventures will begin very early in the morning.
If you are new to Las Sendas or just want to escape your air conditioned home, come join us at our monthly meetings and plan on staying after-ward to have lunch with all of us at a local restaurant.
You do not have to be retired to join and attend our monthly meetings and special events. all Las Sendas residents are welcome. For further information please contact Kevin Hanley at [email protected]

Retired School Teacher and now author of several books, Cindy Shanks presents her experiences of walking alongside 4000 sheep from their winter residence on a Queen Creek Farm to the Heber-Overgaard area for summer grazing. These sheep have been doing this now for over 100 years.

Did you know that in 2005, Dr. Ben Furlong published a book entitled Las Sendas “Where the River Meets the Valley”? It offers an excel-lent historical depiction of what this area was like for the early Mesa settlers. However, so much has happened since then as Las Sendas moved from the “land of potential” to the “Jewel of Mesa” that we see a need to expand on Dr. Furlong’s work and bring the story up to 2012.
a group of homeowners is working in cooperation with the Mesa His-torical Society and Museum (MHSM) to produce an informative and updated history of Las Sendas. The project should take 9 to 12 months, with the results presented in conjunction with the arizona Centennial in 2012. We hope to accomplish this with many volunteers from the community. For this initiative to succeed talents and skills in the areas of research, writing, editing, photography, desktop publishing, and multimedia presentations will be needed! We hope this preview meet-ing will result in the formation of a core work group to help prepare for a formal project launch in September.
