The greatest things about writing for publisher Phillips West are the strong sense of community amongst the staff, the partnership with the local

businesses and the relationships formed with the residents who live in the neighborhoods highlighted by Up Close.

Thus, as Phillips West and Up Close celebrated its fourth anniversary in September, it was with great pleasure the staff reflected on the team’s successes, challenges and the perks of being part of an all-female staff.

“The company was established in September of 2005 with the printing of our first paper, Las Sendas Up Close,” said Kim Phillips, owner and publisher, and also a Las Sendas resident.

“Within the second month, we published Red Mountain Ranch Up Close. Then, in less than a year, we published The Islands and Val Vista Lakes Up Close. We doubled in size quickly,” Kim said. “As a business owner, it is exciting to expand and realize all of the possibilities.”

Kim’s focus on bringing neighbors closer to their community goes hand in hand with a report from the Phoenix Business Journal, which states the majority of customers for local businesses come from within a 3- to 5-mile radius. This means the strong focus of Up Close on community events, nearby businesses and residents not only helps neighbors feel more connected, but also contributes to the success of local establishments.

“We expanded up to seven papers. Then the recession hit, and the homeowners associations were cutting back on their expenses,” Kim commented.

“Currently, we have four papers, Las Sendas, Red Mountain Ranch, The Groves and Power Ranch Up Close,” she continued.

The Up Close team has turned the challenge of down-sizing into an opportunity.

“During the boom times, everyone was working, working, working, but now, with fewer publications, I am able to establish better relationships with my readership

and advertisers. I am able to focus on helping to promote the local businesses,” Kim emphasized. “We are able to continue to provide quality, in-depth stories.”

Sandra Van Dyke, copy editor for Up Close, concurred. “There is such a personal approach to these

papers. This makes the stories very enjoyable to read,” Sandra said. “I think we have very strong writers who have the capacity to present interesting stories, while always bringing about a personal aspect of particular interest to the reader.”

Natasha Thorson, advertising director, agreed. “This is such an exciting time to recognize Phillips West and the Up Close community newspapers. It’s not just a paper. Each publication combines a great community and the local

residents, businesses and activities to deliver the experience of living in these wonderful neighborhoods.”

While Kim looks for the positive aspects of all situa-tions, there are still stressful moments. Difficult decisions must be made.

“One of the biggest challenges is we only have so many pages for the stories,” Kim acknowledged. “Editorial decisions are tough. I have to make sure the story to ad ratio is appealing.

I have to maintain the happy balance between articles and ads.”

Even with the difficult decisions, though, being a small business continues to be a vital part of Phillips West and Up Close.

“ There is a great amount of flex-ibility, and I have the ability to make my own decisions. ArE yoU TIrED oF lIvIng WITh knEE PAIn?By Fred Arnold, NMD

The knee is the largest and most extraordinary joint in the body, combining an enormous range of

motion with rotation, great strength and stability.

On average, we take 13,000 steps each day, exerting a force two to seven times our body weight directly through the knee. The knee, above any other joint, is responsible for ending more athletic careers than any other part of the body.

The number of people requiring knee replacement surgery is 245,000 each year. This number directly correlates to the number of people who are developing arthritis, and, in turn, relates to the number of people who have received cortisone injections, arthroscopy, as well as rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) treatment, and anti-inflammatory medications. These treatments accelerate cartilage breakdown tremendously. They also accelerate the arthritic process.ProloThErAPy, A TrEATmEnT AlTErnATIvE

Prolotherapy, also known as regenerative injection therapy, ligament reconstructive therapy or sclero-therapy, is a recognized orthopedic procedure. The therapy stimulates the body’s natural healing processes to strengthen joints weakened by trauma or arthritis. Joints weakened when ligaments and tendons are stretched, torn or fragmented, become hypermobile and painful. Traditional approaches with anti-inflammatory drugs and surgery often fail to stabilize the joint and permanently relieve pain.

Prolotherapy has the unique ability to directly address the cause of instability, and repair the weak-ened sites, resulting in permanent stabilization of the joint. When precisely injected into the site of pain or injury, prolotherapy creates a mild, controlled inflam-mation. This reaction stimulates the body to lay down

new tendon or ligament fibers, resulting in a strengthening of the weakened structure. When the joint becomes strong, pain will be relieved.

Other conditions responsive to prolo-therapy include shoulder pain, back pain, hip pain, tennis elbow, ankle sprains and foot pain. SCIEnTIFIC rESEArCh ProvES ProloThErAPy WorkS

In 2005, the Journal of Sports Medicine discussed prolotherapy for the knee in an article titled A Systematic Review of

Prolotherapy for Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain. During two randomized controlled trials of the effects of prolotherapy on osteoarthritis of the knee, the subjects reported decreased pain, increased range of motion and increased growth of cartilage thickness. The individuals in this study all had knee injuries. So WhAT ArE ThE BEnEFITS oF ProloThErAPy?• You are spared invasive

surgery, such as artho-scopic surgery for arthritis.

• When relief comes, it is sudden, total, and seem-ingly miraculous.

• The results are usually long lasting, unless the injury is caused by repeti-tive strain.Prolotherapy is not a

cure-all for all pain. However, the founders of prolotherapy, Dr. Gustave Hemwall and Dr. George Hackett, who pioneered the treatment in the 40s, say it can result in a 30 to 40 percent strengthening of the attachment points in the joints weakened by injuries.

Dr. Hackett claimed more than 99 percent of his patients found relief from chronic pain using prolotherapy.oUr ComPrEhEnSIvE APProACh

Prolotherapy is part of the comprehensive approach we take to curing chronic pain. We evaluate each patient thoroughly with a personal history, physical exam and specialized laboratory analysis. Substances serving to promote healing of knees include hormones, such as growth hormone, thyroid hormone, testosterone, dehy-droepiandrosterone (DHEA), rehabilitative exercises, nutrition and specific supplements. When one or more of these hormones are deficient, healing is delayed.

Hormone testing is generally recommended for anyone over age 45. We may ask patients to have X-rays performed before receiving prolotherapy. In all cases involving chronic pain, the doctors of the Anti-Aging Institute will use their expertise to provide a comprehensive treatment approach, including hormone deficiency, rehabilitative exercises, nutrition and specific supplements to maximize health and the ability to heal.

oUr oFFEr To yoUIf you are continuing to

suffer with a painful knee or some other condition limiting your ability to do the things you want to do, we recommend you seriously consider a comprehen-sive treatment approach, which includes prolotherapy.

If you would like to discuss your knee pain with one of our doctors, we are offering a no charge, 20-minute consultation with one of our doctors. This session will help evaluate your condition and introduce you to our office and caring staff. Contact the Anti-Aging Institute of Arizona today at (480) 292-1110. n

Banner heart hospital named First Accredited hEArT FAIlUrE InSTITUTE In ArIzonASubmitted by Coiya KirchoffPublic Relations Director

Nationally recognized for its quality and service, Banner Heart Hospital, in partnership with Tri-City Cardiology,

Banner Home Care and Banner Hospice, recently was named the first Accredited Heart Failure Institute in Arizona by the National Heart Failure Colloquium.

One of only seven Accredited Heart Failure Institutes in the nation, the designation signifies the hospital’s ability to provide superior care to patients with heart failure.

Heart failure is the number one reason for hospital admission for those over age 65, according to Mike O’Meara, MD of Tri-City Cardiology. “Most patients prefer not to be in the hospital. Banner Heart Hospital recognizes that heart failure is a chronic disease requiring superior care and counsel both during and after a patient’s hospital stay.”

The accreditation process is modeled after well-established process improvement methods and includes a study of current practices, a gap analysis, in depth interviews, clinical process mapping, an onsite review, and a comprehensive milestone report with specific action steps.

Other benefits of accreditation from a patients’ perspective include:• Streamlined processes that improve patients’ quality of

care in the hospital,• A patient focused approach to “transition planning”

that takes place throughout the entire hospital stay, preparing the patient for a successful return home and through their visit to the doctor’s office, and

• Patient and family caregiver education, which enables individuals to participate in their own care, gives them more independence and avoids frequent hospitalization.

“Washington can learn from the Banner Heart and Tri-City Cardiology experience,” said the National Heart Failure Colloquium’s Tony Joseph, MD. “Heart failure is the number one Medicare inpatient budget item exceeding 30 billion dollars annually.”

“Here, nurses and doctors work collaboratively together, including the patient and family in the care process right from the start. The Tri-City cardiologists who will care for the patient after they go home become a familiar face to the patient and family while in the hospital,” Tony continued.

“Banner Heart and Tri-City are pioneering transition planning, replacing the older 20th century care model of discharging patients who had instructions, but were primarily on their own once discharged.”

Banner Heart Hospital, one of the largest free-standing heart hospitals in America, is among the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® for cardiovascular care by Thomson healthcare business for three consecutive years. Since

1980, Tri-City Cardiology has a reputation for excellence in heart services. Many of its physicians are recognized among the best in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

“Our physicians, nurses, and staff have always set high standards,” said Laura Robertson, CEO of Banner Heart Hospital. “Integrating the inpatient and outpatient care makes a difference in helping patients manage their heart failure and ultimately, live longer, more fulfilling lives.” n

Dr. Michael O’Meara, Tri-City Cardiology; Banner Heart CEO Laura Robertson; Mykl Garrett, Tri-City Cardiology; and Dr. Mark Starling, Banner Heart chief medical officer, led a team that recently earned the hospital recognition as the state’s first Accredited Heart Failure Institute.

Pumpkin Bread makes october Appearance

Cool autumn breezes just beg for comforting foods like Breadsmith® brand sweet, spicy pumpkin bread.

This seasonal delight is a moist, flavorful quick bread, and a departure from Breadsmith® brand classic hearth breads.

“Pumpkin bread is every bit the tradition that jack-o-lanterns and trick-or-treating are,” said Greg Farr, owner and operator of the Breadsmith®. “The bread makes a wonderful, easy dessert or a breakfast treat. We even have a version with chocolate chips.”

Like all Breadsmith® brand breads, pumpkin bread is made from the finest ingredients, without additives or preservatives. All Breadsmith® brand breads and rolls are made fresh every day from scratch, and baked in an imported six-ton hearth stone oven.

Breadsmith, with more than 30 independently owned retail bakeries nationwide by the end of 2009, is head-quartered in Whitefish Bay, Wis. The organization has received accolades for its European-style breads, including top honors from Bon Appetit magazine, Modern Baking, International Culinary Salon, National Restaurant Association and Best of awards throughout the country.

Breadsmith®, located at 2831 N. Power Road, is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday; and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Breadsmith® is closed on Mondays. For more information, call (480) 981-7600, or visit the Web site at www.breadsmith.com. n

Baseball season is here!

District 7 Fall Little League for Mesa started on Saturday, Sept. 12, and will include an eight-game regular season and year-end double elimination

tournament. The eight-team league is comprised of local area players

who want to improve their baseball skills. In Northeast Mesa, Tim Kott, local Farmers Insurance agent, is the head coach with a team in the Minor’s Division. This division is comprised of young men ages 8, 9 and 10.

“This team consists of some of the prized talent from the Red Mountain American Little League,” Tim said. The squad of 16 players has been practicing since early August. They have been honing their skills to become better baseball players.

Tim has been impressed with the attitudes of the players and their overall work ethic. “I preach to the kids that it is about being a good citizen,” Tim said. “It’s more than just baseball. I expect them to get good grades in school. They are students/athletes. We challenge the kids to do a chore or some good deed, either for their parents or the community. I have found this instills confidence and discipline within our team, and the kids have a fantastic attitude.”

Tim sees many players staying after practice to get better. “It’s not beyond any of these kids to continue to practice on their own during the week,” Tim said with pride. Many players have even signed up or enlisted the talents of various baseball schools and additional coaches to work on their hitting, fielding and pitching. In addition, all the work is producing results.

“The level of play and the competitive nature of our Red Mountain American Little League improve through the kids that have taken the time to play Fall Ball,” Tim said. “That makes my job really easy when kids put forth that much effort. It’s a real pleasure to coach these kids.

“The community of Las Sendas and Northeast Mesa can be proud that the youth in our area are putting their efforts toward positive participation in youth sports and staying out of trouble. What coach would not want to be a part of something so special?”

Tim can be reached at (480) 423-8791 for all your insur-ance needs. His office is located in The Village at Las Sendas, 2913 N. Power Road, Suite 108. n

The da Vinci surgical robot is helpful for complex gynecologic procedures such as myomectomy (surgical removal of fi broids), and hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus). Traditionally, these procedures were performed through a large abdominal incision and required a two- to three-day stay in the hospital.

A robotic-assisted procedure is performed through a few small puncture sites (smaller than a dime) and only requires an overnight stay. Patients experience less pain and are able to return to work and normal daily activities much quicker than patients who undergo an open procedure. There also is reduced risk of infection.

The da Vinci system provides a three-dimensional, high-defi nition panoramic view. The robotic instruments move like a human wrist with seven degrees of motion, which allows the surgeon to operate with increased dexterity and precision.

new mesa Fitness Center offers Affordable Exercise TrainingSubmitted by Wendy Hering and Nathan Kitchen

There is a new fitness center now open in east Mesa. f.i.t. 360 offers an innovative approach

to training that combines all the positive attributes of one-on-one personal training at a very affordable price.

What makes their system different? It’s called results based fitness training –exer-cise programs designed according to your goals, utilizing proven exercise methods, frequen-cies, intensity, and variations. Instead of just working out, you train specifically to achieve measurable results.

As a member, you will have a clearly defined training program to follow, created by a team of certified personal trainers each day. Unlike the impersonal atmosphere at a large, franchise membership gym, you don’t just repeat workouts and wonder when you actually achieve your goals.

Your fitness will be assessed, and then regularly measured and tested approxi-mately every 12 weeks. The trainers then provide you with a specific exercise plan of action. You will be coached according to your needs. This will ensure that you’re training correctly, and avoiding injury as well as overtraining, and speed your progress in achieving your health and fitness goals.

Members at f.i.t. 360 will sign up for regular training times, but also have access to unlimited training hours. Each session

is guided by a certified personal trainer to help you successfully complete each day’s program while keeping the session fun and focused. Members train in a dynamic group

atmosphere, which provides motiva-tion and inspiration. It’s a unique, hybrid approach to training that has quickly proven to be extremely

popular and powerfully effective. With a clearly defined

program, you start to see results and stay moti-vated to accelerate your training and meet your

goals. For instance, Pamela Carter, working with trainers Wendy Hering and Nathan Kitchen, started out with a ten pound fat loss goal. She also wanted to be able to do bodyweight pushups and chin ups. By concentrating on specific exercise combinations and supporting these training methods with a complete comprehensive program, Pamela was able to accomplish this goal in less than two and a half months.

The philosophy of f.i.t. 360 owners Wendy Hering and Nathan Kitchen, both Mesa residents, is that their gym is more than just a place where you have a membership.

“We feel strongly about fitness and what it can do for people’s lives. At f.i.t. 360, we want you to get the most out of your time with us. We want to be the best part of your day...every day.”

For more information on f.i.t. 360, call (480) 299-3922, or visit the Web at www.fit360az.com. The gym is located at 1066 N. Power Road, Suite 105. n

las Sendas Dental health TrEATS SlEEP APnEA Submitted by Las Sendas Dental Health

Sleep apnea is a condition whereby a person’s breathing is closed off for a period of time during sleep,

sometimes occurring as many as 100 times in a night.

Sleep apnea can increase chances for heart disease, high blood pressure, sexual dysfunction, depression, learning or memory loss and tiredness. Many times, the person suffering from sleep apnea may not be aware of the condition. Often, the spouse initially notices the problem.

An 18-month study involves sleep apnea patients at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. An oral appliance, called the Thornton Adjustable Positioner (TAP), is used to treat those suffering from moderate to severe sleep apnea.

According to Dr. Paul McLornan, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, many patients with moderate to severe sleep apnea were not adhering to standard treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines. Many factors, including the noise, cumbersome attachments, bloody noses and the lack of flexibility of different sleeping positions prevent many people from using their CPAP machine.

Dr. McLornan’s study proves the TAP device, which is smaller and fits in a patient’s mouth, is now an option for patients with mild, moderate and now even severe sleep apnea. He states it was previously thought treatment for patients suffering from severe sleep apnea was limited to the use of the CPAP or surgery.

This study adds to the body of medical and dental research literature by showing oral appliances can be effective in treating people with severe sleep apnea.

The device is less cumbersome and better tolerated by patients. It is also much less invasive and costly than the CPAP or surgery. Patients in the study were fitted with the TAP appliance, and given a tiny key, which fits in the front of the device.

The patient was instructed to wear the appliance every night, inserting and turning the key several millimeters before bedtime. By turning the key, the patient pulls the lower jaw forward, creating an open airway in the throat. Patients then informed researchers when they reached a comfort-able point in the adjustments, and when they felt they were able to sleep without snoring or gasping.

The patients are then evaluated using standard sleep studies to determine whether or not their sleep had, indeed, improved. It was found patients improved significantly using the TAP. (Source: Mission, University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, Spring 2009) n

Dr. Farnsworth, of Las Sendas Dental Health, has been successfully using the TAP device to treat patients with sleep apnea since 2001. If you or your significant other suffers from snoring or gasping while sleeping, the cause may be sleep apnea.

Please call for an evaluation. Let us help you find a way to improve your health, and get a full night of restful sleep again. For an appointment to evaluate your options, please call (480) 283-5854.

Red Mountain RanchBy AnnElise MakinG ermanic expatriates don’t dream of

a White Christmas. Snow is just expected. But more important than a

white Christmas night is probably a silent and

holy one.A little Germanic Christmas is filled with

magic—wrapped around the Advent wreath,

St. Nikolaus on Dec. 6, and the most elusive

Christkind (Christmas Eve). These memories

are carried forth in the hearts of children to

last a lifetime. Some of the European customs are

increasingly shared in this country. Don’t get me

wrong. Everybody loves Santa. But as much as

we anticipate this jolly old man—the rich fabric

of Germanic traditions runs far deeper than the

North Pole.On a perfectly brilliant Arizona morning, fi ve Red

Mountain Ranch residents of Germanic descent remi-

nisced about their Christmases past. Some Christmases

had not been that easy or, let’s say, rather meager, but all

had been very special. As Hilde Drexler, Heide Bieser, Gisela Munro, Inge

Otto, and Doris Torres swapped memories, several experi-

ences struck a deeply shared chord.THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ORANGES

A bunter Teller, or cookie variety platter, plays a central part in Germanic Christmas traditions. When Hilde Drexler was a little girl, oranges were an exotic addition to the homegrown apples and nuts in the traditional potpourri.

“After the war, when I was 5 or 6 years old, there were no candies, no cakes, but always an orange,” Hilde recalled. She and her husband, John, are

Red Mountain Ranch pioneers. ey were among the fi rst

six families to build here 21 years ago. Hilde, born in East

Prussia, came to the U.S. with her parents and sister by

boat in 1952.Hilde still remembers her fi rst golden-glazed impres-

sions of New York Harbor. “My family made Christmas

very special.” For her, the meaning always came through

with the nativity play, reenacting the Bible story with lots

of angels. “When I was 9 years old," Hilde remembered, “I got

my fi rst real present, a red-black-white sweater my mother

had knitted.” Bacon grease on rye bread was a much-

cherished delicacy then.“My parents have passed on,” Hilde said. “I still miss

them very much. ey always kept God in their hearts,

but they went through so much.” During Christmastime,

she feels especially connected to her parents and her

childhood.IMPROVISATIONS IN THE TOY WORKSHOP

Heide Bieser also had an orange experience. “When

I tasted my fi rst orange [in Germany], I was 8 years old,

and I found it terribly sour,” Heide reported. So, her father

sprinkled sugar on the tangy delight. at helped a lot.

Heide and her husband, Herbert, moved to Red

Mountain Ranch 5 years ago from Chicago. Heide

emigrated to the U.S. in 1968 from southern Germany. Part

of her early childhood was spent in post-war living quarters

in the beautiful Black Forest area.“In the fi rst few years of my life, there were no men

around for Christmas, only women,” Heide said. e men were caught up in the war or its aftermath. e earliest Christmas Heide remembers includes her mom and several imme-diate family members.“We had special family-favorite Christmas cookies, apples and nuts, but no chocolates or candy, rarely meat but egg dishes and potato salad,” Heide recounted.

Her mom crafted dolls’ clothes from curtain fabric. When

Heide, at the age of 6, received her fi rst set of colored

pencils, “It was like magic.” Heide’s father, missing for two years, came home in

1946. at made all the subsequent Christmases even more

special. Dad went to task in Christkindl’s shop and skillfully

fabricated the toys, among them a miniature washboard, for

the season.NIKOLAUS DOES NOT HAVE ELVES

The Germanic St. Nikolaus is fashioned after the

historic figure of the legendary bishop of Myra. This

saint usually appears before the children, accompanied

by his alter ego Knecht Ruprecht, the strict discipliner

and (sometimes) hit man, on Dec. 6. So, what does Santa do with naughty chil-

dren? Withhold presents. Nikolaus is quite

another story. It’s either treats or beats. So Gisela Munro would fi nd out.

“We used to put our shoes in the window for

St. Nikolaus,” Gisela recalled. Sometimes, however,

the holy man would drop a piece of coal in the shoe

instead of treats. ose shoes also served as postal

boxes for the wish lists addressed to the Christkind.

Gisela and her husband, Bill, a leader for hikes

with the Social Club, have lived in Red Mountain

Ranch for 16 years. Gisela was raised in northern

Germany, near Hamburg. e couple settled in

1964 in Lincolnshire, Ill.“ at one year, St. Nikolaus came and put

me in the sack because I had been naughty,” Gisela

said with a poker-faced demeanor. And continued

laughter, “So, he dragged me down the road, kicking

and screaming, until he had to let me go.”“ at’s probably because he had it all written

in his big golden book,” Heide concluded. Parents

usually slipped the holy man a piece of judgment paper.

When St. Nikolaus came, children had to sing and pray.

So did Heide, until one day she discovered behind that white

beard was her aunt.REAL TREES WITH BLAZING CANDLES

Although Dec. 24 comes every year, not everybody

always got their Christmas. “By the time there was no

Christmas any more, I was 10 years old,” said Inge Otto.

Between 1942 and 1954, Inge became one of the

millions of displaced persons in central Europe. She lived

in eastern and northern Germany before she moved to the U.S. in 1958 with her husband, Karel. e couple has resided in Red Mountain Ranch for eight years.“For a while, we lived in a hotel after we escaped from East Germany,” Inge said. “We lit a few candles, and went to the Christmette (midnight mass).” During those tough years, hambone and pea soup

were the luxury of the season. Food was scarce.

“What does Christmas mean?” Inge pondered the

question. “I did not miss the toys, but I enjoyed the festive

atmosphere from a piano performance or songs and games.”

Inge also loves the Austrian tradition of caroling across town to go to the cemetery, where the

gravesites are ablaze with little

Protection from the UnpredictableSubmitted by Jill SteiglemanFarm Bureau agent

Life is unpredictable and sometimes accidents do happen.

Protect yourself with personal liability insur-ance. Personal liability insurance provides protection from financial loss when someone is injured at your home, or if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while away from your residence. It also includes coverage for medical payments and liability protection.

For example, if a neigh-bor’s child is injured while playing at your home, your personal liability coverage will pay for the medical treatment, up to the policy limit on a covered loss. Medical payments coverage is provided regardless of whether you are legally liable for the injury.

In addition, if you are sued and found legally liable, the liability coverage will pay damages and defense costs. In some situations, these bills could be substantial and your insurance protection would be necessary to maintain your financial standing.

Personal liability coverage is generally affordable and typically provides coverage from $100,000 to $1 million. Excess liability or an umbrella policy is available if higher coverage limits are needed. The amount of coverage you choose depends on your unique needs. You’ve heard of mothers and daughters partnering up in business, but have you ever heard of a mother and daughter-in-law team?

Cheyrl Burleson and daughter-in-law, Laurie Burleson, recently joined the Trails and Paths family this summer. Laurie has been married to Cheyrl’s son, John, for the past 20 years.

A realtor since 1981, Cheyrl could tell Laurie would be a natural fit for real estate. “I never knew she was interested until this past summer. We were in my kitchen, and Laurie said that for the past 10 years she wanted to get into real estate, but had always put the thought aside.” Laurie has been in the beauty business for the past 25 years, and she was looking for some-thing new.

“As soon as I heard the news, I wrote a letter to her saying, ‘You can do it’ and all the reasons she would be a dynamo at it.”

After a pep talk from her cheerleaders, Cheyrl and John, Laurie enrolled in real estate school in June 2009. She finished the entire program on July 9, the day she and her family were going on their summer vacation. “You could say I had tunnel vision,” smiled Laurie. “I was determined, and was not going to stop!”

The duo teamed up in August, and is looking forward to learning from each other and growing together. “We both have our own strengths and experiences that we contribute to the team,” said Laurie. “Cheyrl makes everyone feel comfortable, and she puts the needs of her clients in front of everything. I truly respect her as a mother-in-law, and now being able to work alongside Cheyrl has made me see her in such a

different light. She’s a good example to follow.”

Cheyrl, too, believes Laurie’s attention to detail, eagerness and interest in the industry will be a definite advantage. “Unlike my off-the-wall personality, Laurie has such a calming sense about her. She’s business-minded, but in a personable way. If she has a buyer or a seller, you better believe she’ll go the extra mile for them.”

Before Laurie earned her license, Cheyrl was on the verge of retiring. “She gave me the bug again,” said Cheyrl. “Any business we receive will be referred to Laurie. My role now in life is to mentor her.”

Starting out shouldn’t be a problem for Laurie, especially since she and Cheyrl are so familiar with

the East Valley. “I consider myself a neighborhood specialist,” said Laurie. “I grew up here, went

to Mountain View, and have two teenagers that go to Shepherd and Red Mountain.” Cheyrl moved to Mesa in 1949, and knows the area like the back of her hand.

Ron and Debbie Brown, Trails and Paths owners/brokers, also see the potential in Laurie. “The whole Trails and Paths family has been great. Being a newcomer to the industry, everyone has really shown me the ins and outs of the business. I’m really looking forward to making my mark,” exclaimed Laurie.

For more information on the Burleson girls, visit their Web site at www.laurie.trailsandpaths.com or call (480) 355-4700. n

Desert rose Preschool At lAs senDAsBy Rose Buttitta, Preschool Teacher

We finished September by learning about each other and what preschool is all about. The children are in a routine now, and they know

what happens each school day. I think it is important for them to understand our daily schedule.

We went through all the primary colors and shapes. The 3-year-olds have most of them down. We will continue to work on them until every child has mastered colors and shapes.

Our theme, All About Me, is ongoing. With the help of their parents, the children filled out questionnaires and drew pictures of themselves and their families. The children will show the pictures, and tell the class about themselves and their families. I will make a book, and send it home to the parents.

Our open house was a big success, with almost all parents in attendance. Each family received a picture frame with their child’s picture from the first day of school. Parents also received a handbook detailing the goals and objectives of Desert Rose. I would like to thank all the parents for taking time out of their busy schedules to spend time talking and learning about Desert Rose.

I am quite impressed with how well behaved the children are at school. They come in with happy faces ready to play and learn. We have smaller classes this year, which help the children receive one-on-one attention.

The 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds have learned the days of the week song, which they sing all by themselves. They can all count to 10 and more.

The children are still working on pasting, and need more practice in the art of painting. The 4-year-olds are also doing very well. They are practicing writing their names, as well as cutting and gluing. With practice, they will master it. They like projects they can take home to do. It serves to reinforce what they have learned at school. They call it homework.

The 4-year-old and 5-year-old pre-k classes are working on writing shapes and learning how to write their

names the school way, with the first letter being the only upper case. There is lots of practice on gluing, cutting, coloring and following directions. We have been practicing recognition of numbers and writing.

Next, we will work on letters. We are going to introduce the Zoo-phonics program. It is one tool for children to learn the alphabet sounds. It is also used at Las Sendas Elementary School.

All the children are forming strong friendships, and they are working well together. I’m very proud of them all. All the children will receive monthly Clifford and Let’s Find Out Magazine. In addition, the parents will get Parent and Child Magazine. It is a little gift to the children and families from me.

October is a fun month. We start with apples as the first theme. We are going to taste the different kinds of apples, and graph which one the children like best. The children will also learn about where apples are grown and things made of apples. Cooking is one the best things about apples. Making applesauce and apple pies will be included in their studies.

Our annual pumpkin patch will be returning to the Trailhead. The children will pick out their own pumpkin to take home. We will do lots of crafts while learning about the different kinds of pumpkins. Last year, the children really enjoyed this event. They will be doing lots of crafts and decorations. At the end of the month, we will have our Halloween parties. The children come dressed in costumes, and we will have a parade. Events will conclude with a piñata and gifts.

Desert Rose Preschool is a private preschool located at the Trailhead Members Club.

We have a few openings for all ages. If you are inter-ested, please contact Rose Buttitta at (480) 654-4223, or send an e-mail to [email protected]. n

timely exterior painting can save money By AnnElise Makin

If the paint on your house is peeling or in need of an exterior makeover, remember, success in painting, like all maintenance

projects, depends on sound, professional evaluation and quality workmanship.

“It will save you money in the long run, if you maintain your exterior paint,” said Andrew Chorny, from LKS Painting. “Don’t let your paint crumble and fall apart.” Wood exposed to the harsh Arizona environment is at risk for dry rot.

Andy moved to Arizona from New York in 2001. He has worked painting jobs since right after high school. Initially, he teamed up with his brother, a union carpenter. He has been painting since. Andy’s current business, LKS Painting, was formed in 2007.

“Paint should not peel after only three years,” this painter with a passion observed. Good professional painters will expect their product and workmanship to weather for at least seven years, even the Arizona elements.

But Andy has seen numerous examples to the contrary in brand new local communities. The paint burnt off prematurely. “The houses were painted before the stucco cured,” he said. As a result, the chemical efflorescence made the paint chip.

“On the exterior, you will be better off, in the long run, with using premium quality paint,” Andy said. For most of his projects, he uses Behr paints, which have regularly topped opinions voiced by consumers. Recently, Behr endorsed Andy as one of the best paint contractors in Arizona, a well-earned achievement.

“Before you put any contractor to work,” Andy recommended, “make sure the company is licensed, bonded, insured, and check their references.” Aside from numerous private contracts, Andy has also been called on for many a flood and fire damage repair by the East Valley Disaster Service.

On average, finishing a medium-size family home exterior will take three days. The prep work includes pres-

sure washing the walls, caulking the cracks, repairing the stucco, spot-sand and prime peeling areas and pulling back the adjacent vegetation.

“For the body of the house, I use 100 percent acrylic, hardy, exterior paint,” Andy said, “which can handle the temperature fluctuations by expansion and contraction.” He chooses accent colors in satin enamel for pop outs, a satin finish for the fascia board and semi-gloss enamel for the garage doors.

“Any extra cost that goes into premium quality paint on the exterior is justified,” is the advice from LKS Painting. A little start-up investment saves money down the road.

So, if you feel your house could use a new coat of paint, call Andy for a free estimate. He says temperatures in the 80s, hopefully to come soon, are ideal for superior paint jobs. Call (480) 748-6159. n

LKS Painting is a small company with high quality control. Andy, working with one other painter, stays on the job from beginning to finish. LKS Painting is licensed, bonded and insured. The company is a member of the Better Business Bureau and the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce. References are available upon request. To find out more, go to www.lkspainting.com, or call Andy at (480) 748-6159.

What makes a successful room?By Karen Mandarino, Allied ASID Bella More Interior Design

Design elements sure to make a space feel special include the use of an interesting selection of materials and textures, along with a well planned

use of space, pleasing colors, intriguing details, and a connection between inside and outside areas.

Of course, before any selections are made in any project, the client’s wants and needs are first taken into consideration. To do this, we consider some, if not all, of the following categories.• Innovation — How is the design new and unique?• Aesthetics — How does the appearance of the room

make the client feel in the space?• Health — How does the design solution benefit the

client’s health?• Earth — How is the project ecologically responsible?• Commercial — How did the design improve the

client’s business? • Design Research — What validation is offered

demonstrating the new design solved the problem?• Safety — How does the design make the user safe?• Welfare — How does the design improve the client’s

quality of life?• Suitability – Is the design appropriate for the location

and function? There is a great deal to consider following the first

meeting with the client. Selecting the appropriate items for the space generally takes a week or more. The objective is to design the perfect space to meet the client’s wants and needs.

Designers are uniquely qualified to create interior environments, which work on many levels to improve the client’s quality of life. Also important is the wow factor, vital to every newly designed room. For more information, call (480) 332-6919. n

By AnnElise Makin

The Las Sendas Athletic Club and Spa at the Trailhead has a new director, Jackie Szatkowski, who has been busy creating new programs

encouraging Las Sendas residents to stay active.

Jackie is a well-rounded fitness professional. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science, with an emphasis in health promo-tion. She played high school and collegiate level sports, and understands the importance of being and staying active.

Jackie is also a certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor. Her goal for the Athletic Club is to create more events and group fitness classes catering to the residents who currently work during the day.

“It is important to keep moving,” Jackie said. “Small steps are crucial to creating lifelong health benefits. Fitness is about quality, not quantity. If your goal is to be able to walk around the neighborhood, and each day you take just one step further, the health benefits you are creating for yourself are astronomical.”

Jackie and assistant director Bethany Tanner have been working diligently as a team to create fun and exciting new ideas for both the athletic club, as well as the spa. “We have added many new member amenities that we have begun to implement,” Bethany stated.

The new perks include a complimentary two-week trial offer, equipment orientation, fitness assessment and 30-minute personal training session. “Our premise is to create a warm, welcoming environment for all of our

members,” Bethany added. “We want everyone, from the novice to pro, to feel comfortable when they come in.”

Many new events and programs are coming up at the Athletic Club to encourage residents of Las Sendas to be

active and stay healthy throughout this upcoming year. For example, the whole commu-nity is invited to help celebrate exciting wellness ideas, such as Happiness Happens Month and Purposeful Parenting. Participation in wellness activities makes for healthier, happier families.

“We’ll have our first Trailhead Athletic Club Open House and Health Fair here at the Trailhead Park on Oct. 17,” Jackie announced. “One week later, on Oct. 24, all of Las Sendas is invited to participate in the Family Fun Run.”

“We’re going to be busy,” the new director said with a smile.

“Come by the Trailhead today for a tour of our beautiful facility, sample a fitness class or take advantage of the two-week free trial. The Athletic Club and Spa is looking forward to improving your wellness and community life. Enjoy all the new programs!” n

The Las Sendas Athletic Club and Spa is a full-service facility. The Trailhead staff includes three personal trainers, 10 group fitness instructors, four childcare attendants, seven front desk staff, two massage therapists and one aesthetician. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information on programs, registra-tion and services, visit www.thetrailhead.org, call the Athletic Club and Spa front desk at (480) 830-6900, or better yet, stop by for a tour!

Submitted by Red Mountain Family Chiropractic

When it comes to finding a wellness center, there is a

world of difference between just a mediocre wellness center and a great wellness center, said Dr. Lynn Knuth, of Red Mountain Family Chiropractic.

Recently, the staff has relocated to a new, convenient Northeast Mesa location at The Village at Las Sendas. The new address of Red Mountain Family Chiropractic is 2849 N. Power Road, Suite 103.

Dr. Lynn proposes five things to consider when choosing the best wellness center for you:

1. Are you greeted with a smile and caring attitude when entering the office?

2. Do you feel the staff, from the receptionist to the chiropractic physician, is listening to your concerns?

3. Do you feel well cared for during your office visit?

4. Did the insurance specialist explain your insurance benefits clearly to you?

5. Is the atmosphere conducive to healing? “When you walk in the door in discomfort,

these are the things that will help you get out of pain, and heal quickly and completely,” Dr. Lynn stated. “It doesn’t cost you any more to go to a clinic that has a well-trained staff than one that doesn’t….but it sure makes your experience better, and that is something that goes a long way in promoting good health.”

Preschool launches e-Pre ProgramBy Tisha Marie Pelletier

If you have a 2-year-old, and are looking for a school with strong beliefs in early childhood education and development, you’ve found it. Bridges Preschool, a family-

owned school with locations in Apache Junction, Mesa and Gilbert, has added a new program to its curriculum for chil-dren 2 to 3 years of age. The e-Pre program is the first of its kind in the Valley, and has already been put into practice at the Apache Junction and Gilbert locations.

“We’ve had such an over-whelming response from the community in the last week, even in the last 48 hours, for a program that is developmentally appropriate for 2-year-olds that we decided to launch it here at our Mesa location,” said Cori Fabian, founder and director of Bridges. “We already have working models at our other two locations that have proven to be very successful.”

The e-Pre Program combines language and literacy development, as well as potty training. Children involved in the program learn Spanish and sign language, cooking, gardening, music and move-ment, arts and crafts and other activities. Through the program, they develop their social, communication and problem solving skills, learn to take responsibility for their own actions, and identify their emotions.

Parents can also find comfort in knowing there is a low student to teacher ratio. “State regulations require two teachers for every 16 students, but at Bridges, we have two teachers for every 12 students. So, there is much more one-on-one atten-tion,” explained Cori.

Doing so enables Bridges to have strong relationships with every child at the school, but also the parents. “We know all of our students and parents by name,” said Cori.

In addition to the low student/teacher ratio, all teachers hold degrees in early education, and were interns with the school prior to becoming staff members. “Our teachers go

through a rigorous process to teach here including a four-part interview, letters of recommendation, first aid and CPR certification, ongoing education, plus 30 to 40 hours of professional development each year,” said Cori.

Stephanie Smith, mother of 3-year-old Eli, loves the Bridges staff. “The entire staff is professional, nurturing, and have my child’s best interest at heart,” said Stephanie. “A good measure of any preschool is the child’s reaction. When I come to pick up my son, and have to insist

that we go home, I know there is no better place he can be.”

If you are interested in learning more about this program, Cori advises parents to act soon. “We have waiting lists at our other two locations, and are adding a second program to our Gilbert

location. There is no doubt that our Mesa class will fill up fast.” The program is expected to launch in the next few weeks.

The e-Pre program schedule is full time Monday through Friday, or part time on Monday, Wednesday and Friday or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

In addition to the e-Pre program, Bridges also has pre-school, pre-k and begindergarten, its rendition of kindergarten, for children ages 3 and up.

For more class schedules, tuition and other infor-mation, please visit www.bridgespreschool.com. Open enrollment is available. n
