    Building a Sense of Community…

Neighborhood Watch ProgramWhat better way to meet new neighbors, greet returning ones and just chat than to have breakfast together. once each year, Tapestry Mountain residents get together to enjoy pots of hot coffee and a delicious hot breakfast at a local restaurant. Good conversation and sharing of recent travel adventures is always common. It was a beautiful sunny Saturday morning as we were seated at our tables at the Painted Mountain Golf Restaurant’s Sunroom.

as part of the on-going Neighborhood Watch Program with the City of Mesa Police Department’s encouragement; it is important to meet and get to know your neighbors. Karen Stegenga of the Crime Prevention office of the Superstition District says knowing your neighbor is a first step in a friendly and safe environment.

For more information on Neighborhood Watch Programs, please contact the Mesa Crime Prevention officer, Karen Stegenger on (480) 644-5014. or follow this link to the City of Mesa Neighborhood Watch Site: http://www.mesaaz.gov/police/NeighborhoodWatch/Default.aspx.

    Current News and Notes…

In our fast-paced, stress-filled world we often don’t create the opportunities that we need in order to get to know our neighbors. In days past, good neighbor relations were the stapleof every strong community. Being able to share life’s experiences, both good and bad, with those who live so close to us was once considered one of life’s greatest blessings.

These days it is the exception rather than the rule to take the time to create strong relationships with the people we share our community with...and we are each the poorer because of it. Each one of us has a story to tell, a hand to lend, a laugh to share, and friendship to give. What keeps us from extending so much of ourselves to the families that live around our own may be those same things that prevent us from experiencing many of the great blessings of our parents or of our youth: a changing world that focuses more on the individual than the family and the need to remain isolated in order to feel “safe and secure.”

Someone once said, “If you always do the things you did, you’ll always get the things you got.” If we want to grow as a community then we have to risk breaking free from the bonds of isolation that are so easily created by and for us. We must reach out to our neighbors and let them know that they matter and that we care. If we do that, even in the most seemingly insignificant of ways - like a wave as we pass on the street - then we are moving toward a better community and a better way to live.

Just because our culture has pushed us away from ourselves doesn’t mean it is right, it just means that we have to work that much harder in order to reconnect with one another and create a better environment in which to live.

Architectural CommitteeThe purpose of the architectural Committee is to review and analyze requests to make improvements to the visible exterior of a home and make sure the improvements stay within the guidelines set forth in our CC&R’s.

In an effort to provide and protect each individual homeowner’s rights and property values, it is required that any Las Sendas Homeowner that is considering improvements to their home which modify the exterior of the home submit an application to the architectural Committee prior to starting work on any planned improvements. Work may begin as soon as the homeowner receives written confirmation that their planned improvement has been approved.

It is the purpose of the architectural Committee and the Guidelines to promote those qualities in Las Sendas that enhance the attractiveness and functionality of the community. Those qualities include a harmonious relationship among structures, vegetation (weeds not included), topography and overall design of the community. Some examples of improvements are landscaping (plants, grass, hardscape), painting, security screen doors, sun screens, lighting, just to name a few.

The Custom architectural Review Committee meets the first and third Thursday of the month while the Regular architectural Review Committee meets the second and fourth Wednesday of the month and his comprised of Las Sendas homeowner volunteers and reviews all architectural applications submitted.

Guidelines and applications may be obtained from the association office or online at www.thetrailhead.org.

LAS SENDAS RUN/BIKE/TRI CLUB “We do this together” is the motto of Las Sendas Run Bike Tri Club. We started in 2002 with four members to train for a marathon. a first for three of the original members, it was a goal that seemed almost unattainable. Lesson #1: with the support of a group, training and motivation, we can achieve almost anything! Since then, our group has grown to over 150 members between the ages of 16 and 62. our group has expanded to take on multisport challenges as well. our runners have attained the goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon. We have seen members go from taking their first pedal strokes to completing Ironman. We are continually motivated to do our best by seeing our members place in their age groups in multisport events including duathlons; sprint, olympic, and half ironman triathlons; and running events including 10K, half marathons, and marathons. Believing that giving back makes for a stronger community, our members regularly participate in and raise money for events such as Wounded Warrior, MS 150, Race for the Cure, Climb to Conquer Cancer, The 3 Day Walk, and Semper Fi.

Starting overa Las Sendas Residents’ Cautionary Tale

Hello, my name is Dan Mannon. Just a few years ago I was driving home from work and I had life changing experience. I am a survivor of a traumatic brain injury. Luckily nobody was injured in this, except me of course.

over a decade ago on November 28, 2000, I was driving home from work, after I had just moved to Phoenix, arizona from Seattle, Washington. I endured a car accident that turned my life around.

During that time in my life, I was young and stupid, when it came to driving. “In a nutshell”, I was reckless, (like some teenagers, I know). I was driving without a seatbelt, as well as talking on my phone. The phone is a huge distraction, the way texting is big now. Cellular phones now have the capabilities of being extremely dangerous.

If I was wearing my seatbelt like many people use to tell me, this situation, would have never occurred. You might be asking the following question. How does he know? I know, because a coffee cup that was next to me did not even break. The inside of the vehicle was unscathed. Does that help you understand, how I know.

Up until now I never really thought much about the importance of seatbelts, and focusing while driving. This whole thing happening to me has really opened my eyes, and now I can now, see more clearly.

I know you are probably thinking “This is just another sad story this could never happen to me.” all I have say is that, I use to think that way too, if indeed you are thinking “along those lines”. Looking back I wish I would have listened to people with similar stories, if I would have listened to the advice by others maybe I could have avoided this ordeal.

Dan’s full story of recovery will be available in book stores coming soon.

    Community Spotlight…

Las Sendas Book ClubThe Las Sendas Book Club is open to everyone in the community. Meeting are held on the third Tuesday of every month from 6:30 - 8:00 pm at the Trailhead Members Club. This is a wonderful way to get to know your neighbors, read interesting books and enjoy lively conversation. New members are always welcome. For more information about the book club please contact Tiphani.

Mayone Book aZ ChoiceSince 2002, the arizona State Library, archives and Public Records office has hosted one Book aZ, a statewide project aimed at promoting literacy and fostering a sense of community. This program encourages communities across the State of arizona to read the same book at the same time and participate in discussions and programs centered around that book that will increase their knowledge and appreciation of arizona’s unique history and culture. We will announce the book title at our March meeting.

JuneThe Gentleman Poet: a Novel of Love, Danger and Shakespeare’s Tempestauthor: Kathryn JohnsonMany scholars believe one of Shakespear’s most beloved plays, The Tempest, was inspired by a shipwreck and true tale of survival that captured the imagination of 17th-century London. But what if the greatest playwright of all time didn’t simply read about the wreck of the Sea Venture off the Bermuda coast? What if Will was on board, fleeing powerful enemies, daring one last great adventure near the troubled end of his career?

You haven’t missed anything…the Las Sendas Women’s Group has been on vacation for the first part of the year, but we’re back and ready to get together! If you’ve never joined us or haven’t come in awhile, we want to welcome you out for some new fun activities with great women! We’ll take advantage of our beautiful weather and scenery in the Las Sendas area while supporting our local businesses. Feel free to send in suggestions for activities or speakers. We want this group to fit your needs and interests while still remaining fun and social! Some potential speakers/topics for future gatherings include a fun cooking class, the use of essential oils, and a lesson on homeopathy. as always, we’re social first and foremost!

If you’re new to the area or a long-time resident, you just might find what you’re looking for in the Women’s Group. We have lots of new residents moving in our great community, so come on out, get to know some new friends and have fun in the process! To be added to the email mailing list, please contact Tina Reed ([email protected]).

    Las Sendas Women’s group

Hello from the Retirees Club! our year is well underway with meetings, programs, lunches and two social events coming up this spring.

Many of our winter visitors have returned and it is always fun to catch up with them. Programs have already included a return visit from Cindy Shank, aka “the sheep lady”, and a wonderful presentation on Las Sendas, by the authors of “Las Sendas: The Dreamers, The Builders, The Community”, Janet Patrick and Katherine Karpinski of the History Project. They, along with others, including several members of the Retirees’ group, did all the research and work to produce this informative book.

The first social event of the season will be on Monday, March 4 from 7-9 p.m. at the Trailhead Members Club. Chairpersons Ron Kingma and Carolelynn Prusansky promise a lovely evening, showcasing music, art and photography, from many of our own members, complete with hors d’oeuvres and dessert. In april there will be a group going to the arizona opry, coordinated by Dick Wilson. This popular annual event is sold out, but Dick is always looking for alternates in case of late cancellations.

Later, on april 29, Bill Hall and Lana Taylor are hosting our second social event, in the planning stages as this goes to press, and it will be a Country/Folk Karaoke Night. Sharpen up those vocal cords and join us!
