Landrunner Mission: To support health and fitness of all ages through recreational running July 2006 - Issue No. 123 by Kathy Moffitt I had never heard of John Bingham Racing Inc, out of Chicago. But runner friend Rachell Boggess had and knew he sponsors running cruises. Since Rachel and I are a couple of running gypsies, this running cruise was just the thing for us. Put together ALASKA… RUNNING… and HOLLAND AMERICA CRUISE LINES… and you have the “Great Alaska Maritime Marathon.“ Yes, it was a staged full marathon in bits and pieces over the 7 day Alaska cruise. We either ran every day on board, or jumped ship to do a half marathon, 5 mile run or 10k trail run at the ports of call. The running cruise left June 18, out of Seattle and back. There were 80 runners participating and Rachel and I were the only ones from Oklahoma. Every morning we were up early for the day’s 6 a.m. activity briefing by John Bingham or his associate Jenny Hadfield. Some of you senior runners may remem- ber John “The Penguin” Bingham. He wrote interesting and amusing stories in Runners World magazine for years under the pen name The Penguin, but no one ever knew at that time who The Pengiun was. Every morning the runnner briefing was at 6 a.m. because we were off the ship at 7 a.m. for 8:30 a.m. runs. Our first port of call was Juneau, and the Juneau Run- ning Club put on a half marathon for us on Wednesday. Thursday in Sitka a 5 mile run in the rain and cold through a beautiful totem pole park. Friday in Ketchikan we braved a very hilly 10k trail run. Saturday we ran through the streets and gardens of Victoria, British Columbia. It was a fantasic cruise aboard the West- erdam. The other high points I remember are…Monday’s treadmill time trial…pre- dicting our finish time for the entire mar athon…Monday’s running and stretching seminar…Tuesday’s 2 mile deck run… long sleeve shirts and fleece vests were given to each runner that made us look like elite runners…the marathon medals awarded each of us…and above all the spectacular glaciers that were “calving”, some areas sliding into the ocean. I had never heard of John Bingham

Racing Inc, out of Chicago. But runner

friend Rachell Boggess had and knew he

sponsors running cruises. Since Rachel

and I are a couple of running gypsies, this

running cruise was just the thing for us.

Put together ALASKA… RUNNING…

and HOLLAND AMERICA CRUISE

LINES… and you have the “Great Alaska

Maritime Marathon.“ Yes, it was a staged

full marathon in bits and pieces over the

7 day Alaska cruise. We either ran every

day on board, or jumped ship to do a half

marathon, 5 mile run or 10k trail run at the

ports of call. The running cruise left June

18, out of Seattle and back. There were

80 runners participating and Rachel and I

were the only ones from Oklahoma.

Every morning we were up early for

the day’s 6 a.m. activity briefing by John

Bingham or his associate Jenny Hadfield.

Some of you senior runners may remem-

ber John “The Penguin” Bingham. He

wrote interesting and amusing stories in

Runners World magazine for years under

the pen name The Penguin, but no one ever

knew at that time who The Pengiun was.

Every morning the runnner briefing was

are…Monday’s treadmill time trial…pre-

dicting our finish time for the entire mar

athon…Monday’s running and stretching

seminar…Tuesday’s 2 mile deck run…

long sleeve shirts and fleece vests were

given to each runner that made us look

like elite runners…the marathon medals

awarded each of us…and above all the

spectacular glaciers that were “calving”,

some areas sliding into the ocean.

Have you checked out our website lately . . . okcrunning.org? Well, if you haven’t you are in for a big surprise. Once Bill Goodier got the Boston Marathon behind him he turned his full attention and focus to updating our website. It once again is full of information with an updated calendar, pictures of our Club members at various events, and an online copy of the newsletter. Bill is doing a great job and will post pictures if you will forward them to him at [email protected]. The June social was generously hosted by Steve and Deb Johnson at their beautiful home on the 24th. The event was well attended and not only included terrific food, but also an impromptu diamond treasure hunt. (One shouldn’t miss these parties). After an exhaustive search Linda Lekawski found the diamond in the grass under a chair. Paul Lekawski was not surprised (commented that she can always sniff out a diamond) and Sherri Rector was much relieved that she again has a “set” of diamond earrings.

Our July meeting will be on Monday the 17th at 6:30 p.m., back at Ingrid’s Kitchen. The speaker this month will be Dr. Mike Kelly from Stillwater, OK. Dr. Kelly was featured in the September 2005 issue of the Sports Source and is the Okla-homa age group records holder at several distances. As stated in the Sports Source “not bad for a guy with asthma who was mediocre in high school, didn’t run in college, and only began structured training five years ago”. This is a speaker you won’t want to miss. Also, just a reminder that we will vote at the July meeting on certain changes to our By-Laws. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Good running to all,

Bill SnipesPresident

Landrunners: Online, at the Party, and at the Races

Upcoming Landrunners MeetingJuly 17th July Meeting Club Meeting at Ingrid’s Deli. Dr. Mike Kelly of Stillwater will be our guest speaker.

It’s 8 a.m. the morning after the April 30, Memorial Marathon. We turn on the computer and the first e-mail that pops up is “when will training start again?” We write back to the runner and cry for mercy because 16 weeks and 500 miles of train-ing ought to hold us all for awhile. The runner immediately answers with “I developed a slight nagging injury and only got to do the Memorial half. My goal is a marathon and I‘d like to do it this year.” Within the week we had received another half dozen inquiries, so with runner enthusiasm like that it is tough for us not to get our enthusiasm back. Then while in The Runner getting a new pair of Fila racing flats we lamented how tough it is for week after week to secure gallons and gallons of water and put out multiple water stops, then take them up after everyone has finished. Behold! Brent Gaddis, manager of The Runner offered that The Runner will run the work and expense of putting out and taking up water stops, plus any other inciden-tal expense of Fall Training. Hats off to Brent! Though we will be following the Landrunners 16 week marthon training schedule, runners of all ages and ability are included to run short or long. We have heard from some run-ners coming from out of state that OKC is not friendly to run-ners just moving in, so this is the time to change their minds.

All runners are welcome and there is no charge for the 16 week training group runs. Let’s dazzle them, and other new runners, with our friendship. New for Fall Training is the invitation on ideas to spice up the runs. Also being accepted are your suggestions of your fa-vorite running place so we may run there if mileage is in order with the schedule. Bob and Gaile Loving have already sug-gested a 10 mile run from Lake Stanley Draper marina and it is tentaivly being scheduled for Saturday, August 19. To spice up one of our old trails we may have a Poker Run. At every water stop a card is drawn and the highest five card hand at the finish wins a prize. OK now, help out. What are your ideas to make us more friendly and to make the runs more fun. Start being friendly by sending your suggestions to [email protected]. Also, if you haven’t received your copy of the16 week training schedule, and to get on the training e-mail list, just let tworunners know. Training starts Monday, July 31, with the first 3 mile run on your own. The first group run of 6 miles is Saturday, August 5, Stars & Stripes Park on Lake Hefner. This is a special invitation to see you there.

Jim Robyler is a long time member and board director of OCRC; The Landrunners. He joined in 1968 when we met at Shotgun Sam’s on May and subsequently moved to Boulevard cafeteria for a number of years. He has achieved “senior” age group status, but as runners know, that does not equate with “old”. He has run 4 half marathons this year. You have seen and heard him on the PA system at races giving time, weather, pithy comments and playing music tapes. He has been known to engage in pulling your leg, if you give him occasion to do so. Memorable races have been Tulsa Run, early years; Race with Harry [Harry Cordellos raced here 2 times. He was a nationally dominant blind runner]; Jerry Crockett Run; Pikes Peak ascent 2 times was the most thrilling; Okie Relays 4 times; starting in Kansas and crossing Okla. into Texas; Marine Corps marathon in ‘97; Jim Thorpe marathon and half and numerous Red Bud races. He was club Pres. in ‘97, has been a greeter for many years and coordinator and originator of the club sponsorship of the Lake Hefner Trails clean-up. He originated the popular

Bulldog Awards in which you had to race 100 miles in a year and at prescribed combination of distances including 5km thru half marathon. His favorite distance is the one he is currently running. Race walking is part of his resume. Health and coma-raderie are important payoffs to him for being an active runner and club member. His curriculum vitae includes teaching at Jr. and Sr. high levels, 35 years with state Dept. of Career Tech and a former basketball star [his words]. He also holds the age group course record for the Aquarium Run in Jenks, for the half marathon, which is true, but I think I just felt a slight pull on my leg.
