There are many exciting job prospects in cricket coachingthanks in part to the renewed interest in the sport at youthlevel. This means that the need for trained coaches is at apremium. In partnership with Lancashire County CricketClub and Lancashire Cricket Board, Myerscough Collegedelivers Cricket Studies courses at the College’s centre inPreston and at the fabulous Old Trafford Indoor CricketCentre in Manchester.

AccommodationAt Myerscough we have exceptional full-board and self-catering accommodation for more than650 students, in 28 different Halls of Residence. There is a good mix of single and twin roomswith shared common room, kitchen and bathroom facilities, plus a range of self-catering en-suite accommodation.

Myerscough prides itself on being a safe and friendly campus. Resident wardens are alwayson hand to assist with the well-being and safety of students, while CCTV cameras and a night-time security team provide additional reassurance.

Residential fees for Higher Education students range from £3885 for a single en-suite roomon a self-catering basis to £5809 for a single en-suite room with full-board catering – both on36 week contracts. Fees for Further Education students start from £3922 for a twin room withshared bathroom and a five-day meal allowance.

Andrew Flintoff College FellowFormer England and Lancashire cricketer Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoffwas made a College fellow in 2011 for his services to cricket.

Student Success Callum FlynnCallum Flynn was a talented schoolboy cricketer who waspreviously in Lancashire’s county-age-group squads. He neededa titanium knee replacement to continue his cricket career afterbeing diagnosed with bone-cancer when he was 14 years old.

Callum initially completed a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma inCricket Studies before moving on to study a Foundation Degreein Cricket Coaching, while representing his country atinternational level.

In 2016, Callum won the ECB’s Disability Cricketer of the Yearaward in recognition for his outstanding individual performancesin all formats of international cricket, including a starring rolein helping the England Physical Disabilities squad to victory inthe inaugural Physical Disabilities World Cup in Bangladesh.

It’s an amazing achievement which can only encourage moreplayers, especially those with disabilities to play the sport. Callumhas shown that regardless of the challenges that you might face, ifyou’re determined, you can achieve your goals.

Introducing ourManchester centre

Cricket students based at the Indoor CricketCentre at Emirates Old Trafford can takeadvantage of the international standard facilitiesincluding indoor and outdoor cricket nets,bowling machines, 5 net lanes and technicalanalysis systems.

Students have full access to these facilities tosupport their practical skill and technicaldevelopment. Net lanes are constructed withdifferent surfaces to cater for all types ofbowling.

Students benefit from using the same facilitiesas the players and coaches from LancashireCounty Cricket Club.

Myerscough College’s Old Trafford base alsoincludes classrooms and office space and plentyof parking, with excellent public transport links.

About the CourseMyerscough College has teamed up with Lancashire County CricketClub and Lancashire Cricket Board to offer a fantastic opportunity tostudents wishing to pursue a career within the cricket and sportsindustry. The Myerscough College Cricket Academy combinesacademic sporting qualifications with practical skills development,coaching and competitive fixtures.

The College offers opportunity to study at level 3 (A level equivalent)for students who wish to develop a comprehensive understanding ofCricket - encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge andtechnical skills. It is a popular option for both school leavers andsuccessful Level 2 Diploma students. The course incorporates a mixof practical, classroom lectures, industry visits and case studyexercises.

Entry Requirements5 GCSEs including Maths and English Language plus one course specificGCSE such as Science, Biology or PE or an Intermediate Level course(e.g First Diploma at Distinction including at least one key skill at Level2 in either Application of Number or Communication), or equivalentqualifications. In addition Learning Areas may apply specific agreedaptitude assessments that assist selection.

Applicants for all courses in Cricket Studies are expected to show astrong commitment to the industry and a strong personal statement.

Learning and AssessmentClasses are a mixture of practical and underpinning theory and willtake place either in the classrooms or out on the sports pitches.Assessments will include assignments, presentations and reports.There are no formal examinations on the Level 3 BTEC Diploma.

Progression and CareersAs a course equivalent to A Level the Level 3 BTEC Diploma is an idealspring board for progression to a Foundation Degree or Full Degreedepending on UCAS points gained. Successful students may progressto higher education courses, including our foundation degree (FdA) inCricket Coaching.

Employment opportunities in cricket and its related industries arecurrently very good. The Subsidiary, Diploma and Extended DiplomaCricket Studies provide the qualification and experience for entry intothe industry at an operational level with future prospects formanagement.

Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport Explores thestructure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular andrespiratory systems and also the fundamentals of the energy systems.

Psychology for Sports Performance Develops understanding of thepsychological dimensions of cricket and develops techniques toimprove sporting performance.

The Physiology of Fitness Provides an opportunity to explore thebody’s response to acute exercise and how the body adapts to long-term exercise participation.

Sports Nutrition Provides an opportunity to explore the body’sresponse to acute exercise and how the body adapts to long-termexercise participation.

Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport Enables learners to assesstheir own and others technical and tactical skills, and plan their owndevelopment in cricket.

The Athlete's Lifestyle Examines aspects of the athletes' lifestyles,as well as duties that they will have to undertake as part of theirprofessional role in cricket, for example public appearances, mediainterviews and financial management.

Current Issues in Sport Explores the history of sport, the key issuesin modern UK sport and the factors that prevent sport and exerciseparticipation.

Exercise, Health and Lifestyle Understand the principles of exercise,maintaining good bodily health and managing lifestyle in a sportsenvironment.

Physical Education and the Care of Children and Young PeopleProvides a basis of understanding for those intending to teach orinstruct children and young people.

Sports Coaching Develops understanding and knowledge of theroles, responsibilities, skills and techniques of a cricket coach andhow to apply them whilst coaching and/or leading sports sessions.

Analysis of Sports Performance Explores the performance demandsof sport and how to analyse it.

Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise Looks at designing,planning, delivering and reviewing exercise sessions which meet theneeds of different client groups.

Practical Team Sports An understanding of the nature of teamsports.

Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport Understand how thesport is regulated and how rules are set, implemented and reviewedand explore the nature of officiating in sport.

Sports Injuries Provides an overview of injury prevention,identification and basic treatment. The unit also explores differingrehabilitatory interventions for common sports injuries.

Talent Identification And Development In Sport Provides anunderstanding of the different predictors of talent and the ways ofdeveloping talent.

About the CourseThe Foundation Degree in Cricket Coaching, awarded by the Universityof Central Lancashire, has been designed to develop highly trainedand qualified graduates with the academic knowledge, coachingexpertise and practical skills to gain rewarding and exciting careersin the cricket industry. Based around the work of a modern cricketcoach, the course encourages students to develop innovative,contemporary ideas which are underpinned by traditional values andpractices.

Through links with Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC), LancashireCricket Board (LCB), and local cricket clubs and schools, the coursefocuses on coaching within community, club and high performanceenvironments. Students are offered a wealth of opportunity to developtheir coaching skills and gain vital experience, on and off the field,from organising and delivering competitions to training principles andanalysis. This makes the course an ideal choice for anyone who wantsto develop their knowledge of cricket from a vocational perspective.

Students have access to regular training by highly qualified andexperienced coaches, four individual bay cricket nets, bowlingmachines and fully equipped fitness suites. The Academy also makesuse of the Indoor Cricket School at Emirates, Old Trafford, Manchester.

Entry Requirements48 UCAS Tariff points (2017 entry UCAS tariff). AS levels, BTEC SubsidiaryDiploma and Scottish Intermediate 2s may be used to contribute to entryrequirements but they are not sufficient for entry on their own.Alternative equivalent qualifications will also be considered positively.

Applicants who believe they may be eligible for Accreditation of PriorCertificated and/or Experiential Learning (APCL/APEL) for certainmodules will be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants for whom English is a second language must be able todemonstrate proof of International English Language Testing System(IELTS) at level 6.0 (with no component score lower than 5.5) orequivalent.

Learning and AssessmentStudents will complete a variety of assessments including delivery ofpractical coaching sessions, performance planning and analysis,essays, multimedia presentations, reports, presentations, group workand mini projects.

Learning activities include lectures, seminars, tutorials and practicalsessions. Students will be expected to undertake extensiveindependent study and research. Students will also have access toMyerscough's virtual learning environment.

There is no formal industry placement on this course, however theWork Skills Development and Work Project moduels will utilise relevantworking environments to provide the opportunity for students todevelop real practical and technical skills and help prepare them foremployment in their chosen subject area.

Progression and CareersUpon successful completion, students may apply to progress onto thefinal year of the BA (Hons) Sports Coaching or BA (Hons) Sports Studies.

Coaching positions are available in Community Cricket, Performance,and Development. Other opportunities include a Chance to ShineDevelopment Officer, marketing, analysis and PE teaching.

Course ModulesTraining & Conditioning in Cricket Introduces students to thescientific principles, concepts and theories of resistance training andconditioning.

Applied Cricket Coaching Students are introduced to the design,development and evaluation of cricket performance through practicaldelivery, observation and analysis, performance evaluation andfeedback.

Cricket Coaching Principles and Practice This module developsunderstanding of the main philosophies, styles, and practices ofcricket coaching.

Introduction to the Science of Cricket The module focuses on thethree main areas of sport science utilised in cricket coaching -physiology, psychology and biomechanics.

The Delivery of Sport This module develops an understanding of themajor frameworks and delivery structures relating to the provisionof, and support for, sport and physical activity within the UK.

Work Skills Development This module provides students with first-hand experience where students will use their industry environmentto develop practical and technical skills.

Work Project Applies the practical, technical and personal skillsdeveloped in the Work Skills Development module.

Research Development The module aims to develop the ability ofstudents to undertake investigative research in an academic andvocational context.

Sports Event Management To develop an understanding of theplanning and organisation involved in the delivery of sports events.

Coaching in Cricket This module gives students the opportunity todevelop and appreciate the skills, techniques and strategies involvedin cricket. The module will develop an awareness of the uniquedemands and considerations involved in the coaching of cricket.

Cricket Coaching Observation and Analysis This module providesa framework within which students apply the knowledge of the rolesand requirements of cricket to the design and delivery of suitablecoaching structures.

Talent Identification and Cricket Development Students willdevelop an understanding of the performance pathways developedby the ECB and other sporting organisations to develop players totheir full potential.

UCLan PARTNERSHIPMyerscough College is an Associate School of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan),a dynamic, vibrant and contemporary university located in Preston city centre. UCLan isone of the largest universities in the UK with world-leading and internationally excellentresearch areas. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

As Myerscough higher education students are enrolled at both the College and theUniversity, they are able to access a wide range of the facilities and services at UCLan'scampus in Preston. College based courses therefore have the same entry requirements,regulations and awards.

Course FeesThe majority of students aged 16 to 18 enrolling on full-time courses at Myerscough College donot pay tuition fees.

All students aged 19 and above are liable for tuition fees of up to £10,000 for full level 3 orabove qualifications. However for students aged between 19 and 23, and studying a first level3 fully funded qualification, fees may be waived. Students who receive fee waiver will berequired to pay a facilities and resources contribution of £95 if studying at Preston, or £30 ifstudying at Old Trafford.
