Kia ora Parents, Whanau, and Caregivers, Newsletter #14 Wednesday 23rd May, 2018 Term 2, Week 4 School Roll 304 Attendance We have a requirement from the Ministry of Education to carefully monitor children’s attendance at school. A part of this is the “roll call” every morning. Schools in NZ use an electronic data system called ENROL to call the roll, instead of the paper ones that many of us “bigger kids” grew up with. For safety reasons, and compliance at Ministry level, we need to ensure that we accurately know who is at school on time every morning. Our system is that if a child is late, they go straight to the oce and get a “print out” and take this to the classroom. This helps us ensure that all children are accounted for incase of an emergency, and also means that we don’t unnecessarily phone or text home to check on your child’s absence. This can cause real concern if indeed your child is at school. Attendance at school is absolutely essential for them to progress in their learning. Please remember that if your child is sick, or cannot be at school for a valid reason, please phone the school and let us know: - the name of your child and the classroom they will be absent from - the reason for their absence Currently school attendance rates are at 89%, which is higher than previous years but still a long way of our target of 94%. Of course if your child is sick, home and rest are the best medicine. It is however, really important that we have kids at school learning where possible, so that their progress and achievement remain at the fore. Thanks for your support. Young Leaders Conference 2018 Last Monday the 14th of May, the house leaders attended National Young Leaders Day in Hamilton. The theme for the day was Me Whakaro Rangatira which means think like a leader. We listened to many inspirational speakers such as Amanda Wilson, Lisa Tamati, Riley Hathaway, Jono Naylor, Vince Harder and Willy Wairua. The key messages from all the speakers were; it’s alright to be dierent, it’s good to stand out from the crowd, never give up on your dreams, it’s good to struggle and be challenged, failure is good, as long as you learn from it, determination is more important than talent, whether you can or you cannot, you’re right. Jono Naylor spoke to us about HOPE the H stood for humility the O stood for others focused, the P stood for play to your strengths and E stood for extend yourself. Riley Hathaway spoke to us about environmental issues such as the rubbish in our oceans. Lots of us connected with her because she’s not too much older than us and she told us that our voice can be heard no matter how young we are. At the end of the day we had an amazing performance by Vince Harder who came 3rd on X Factor and he was Simba on the Lion King!! He was an amazing singer and we all had a blast listening to him sing. We all took away something exciting to share with our peers and our families. By Annika Little

Cross-CountryIt was such a lovely day on Thursday with the weather playing the perfect game for our children to run their very best race. It was amazing to see our tamariki trying so hard to do their very best on the course and we had some exceptional racing. Whether children placed or not, cross country is about the discipline of pushing yourself, even if it is uncomfortable and challenging. It is about having a growth mindset, and it is also about being fit, which is so important. We were very proud of our children’s effort this year as they demonstrated all of these things in bucket loads.

A big thanks to Mr Buller and Mrs House for their organisation on the day and in the lead up to the event, and also to all of the teachers and staff who work hard to ensure our children are ready and prepared for and on the day! What a great team effort!

Chicken Pox We are wanting our families to be aware we have 2 confirmed cases of chicken pox in the school.Chickenpox can often start with the following symptoms: fever, headache, runny nose, cough, loss of appetite and feeling tired. A red rash (blistery spots) usually follows 1 to 2 days later, this can continue to spread on your child for another 3 - 4 days and usually becomes itchy. Chickenpox is contagious and your child should stay home until all spots are scabbed over and dry. This can take around 5 - 7 days.

PHARMACIST RAPID RESPONSE SORE THROAT SWABBING AND TREATMENT SERVICE NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH SELECTED PHARMACIES IN THE BOP AREA: The BoP Pharmacy Group is pleased to announce that 34 Pharmacies across the BOP DHB area are now providing Rapid Response Sore Throat swabbing and treatment services for the management of Group A Streptococcal Pharyngitis (Step Throat). This service is part of the BOPDHB’s plan to reduce the incidence of Rheumatic Fever by increasing access to free, rapid, effective sore throat management. Community Pharmacies across the region will greatly improve access to these services.

Pharmacies will provide eligible patients with fully subsidised (free to the patient), no appointment necessary throat swabbing and antibiotic treatment in accordance with the National Heart Foundation Guidelines for sore throat management (2014) under a Standing order.

If someone (aged 3 - 35), in the household has a sore throat and you are classed as in the high risk range (Crowding, Maori or Pacific Islander), then the pharmacist will dispense the antibiotics immediately if needed. If you are classed as low risk, the antibiotics will not be dispensed until the test results have come back (approx. 2 - 3 days.)

Waughs Pharmacy, at the Welcome Bay Shops are one of the pharmacies involved with this treatment scheme.
