Kia Ora We are delighted to offer your School the opportunity for your children to learn cooking skills and healthy eating habits through our brand new “FEED YOUR WHANAU PROGRAMME”. But first, the back story. We believe every Kiwi kid should have the opportunity to learn to cook. So In 2016 in response to the obesity crisis and insights that cooking helps kids have healthier lives, skids launched its exclusive cooking programme ‘FoodStorm’, (recipes developed with support from New Zealand Heart foundation)’. In 2018 we were joined by Nestlé NZ to help grow the programme across New Zealand in our after school centres, and thanks to their support over 1100 kiwi kids across 60 schools cooked up a storm in less than 3 months! We were proud recently also to be endorsed by NZ”s largest Food Magazine, Food Magazine NZ on Instagram, as “FoodStorm being the best programme they have seen yet for teaching kids how to prepare some really healthy food”. Back to the Now. Our goal has always been to offer FoodStorm as part of the School Curriculum so every kiwi kid gets the opportunity to learn to cook. So thanks to our wonderful partnership with Nestlé we have developed the ‘Feed your Whanau inquiry unit. This is a 4 week Inquiry Unit is linked to The New Zealand Curriculum, written by a teacher for teachers aimed at year 4 students. FEED YOUR WHANAU is split into four lessons, each lesson having a main focus and a hands-on, fun activity relating to that focus. Lesson 1 : Food groups and daily servings, an introduction to a healthy meal. Lesson 2 : Growing your own food with a look at cost savings as well as all the how-to information in growing and caring for home produce. Lesson 3 : The colours in nutrition. What do these colours mean and how are they good for us? Lesson 4 : Hygiene and kitchen safety, with the grand finale of cooking a delicious, healthy meal. So how does it all work? The classroom teacher delivers lessons 1 to 3, with the comprehensive lesson plan and resources provided in the Inquiry Unit. (Please see Inquiry Unit attached). In the the final lesson, sKids will come in and deliver & fund the cooking class where kids will make a delicious Carbo-nara recipe. Not only that, kids will get to take home a ‘Feed your Whanau Food pack’ when they can then serve up the meal for their Whanau. Ma te Wa sKids Team
