A special welcome to all of our new students and their families. A warm welcome is also extended to Isobel, a college student from Germany, who is volunteering her time in Room 8 this term. We have had a great start to our school term this week. There was an excited buzz in the playground on Monday morning as children reconnected after the holidays. They all looked refreshed, sang well at assembly and behaved appropriately during our break times. A very positive start to the term. We are now implementing our policy: No hat, play in the shade. Please ensure that your child has a brimmed navy blue sunhat at school every day. Very soon staff will begin planning for 2017. One of the important tasks is to organise classes for the new year. I encourage parents/caregivers to share with me, in writing, (email is fine) before the end of October, any information which you think will help us in planning 2017 classes. This does not mean requesting a teacher for your child but giving us any further information to help us to make these decisions. Please send emails to [email protected] Congratulations to Alana who came 12th at the Inter Regional Cross Country event held in Wellington at the end of last term. She was the only team member from Nayland Primary and proudly represented the Nelson Tasman region. A reminder that Monday, October 24 th is Labour Day, when the school is closed. Finally, good luck to all of our summer sports teams who begin their games over the next couple of weeks. Noho ora mai ra J a n i c e G u l b r a n s e n PRINCIPAL

Up to 80% of UV radiation can still get through on a cloudy day. In NZ from Sept-April, even on cooler and/or

cloudy days, UV radiation levels can be high enough to cause sunburn.

7 teaspoons is the amount of sunscreen you need to apply every 2 hours.

Be Sunsmart: slip, slop, slap and wrap to protect your skin and eyes. Check out www.sunsmart.org.nz

Calling all old Mobile Phones to help Sustainable Coastlines look after NZ’s coastlines and waterways. After $2.5 million donated to the Starship Foundation from the sale

of unwanted old mobile phones it is time for a new multi award winning NZ charity - Sustainable

Coastline to benefit from this scheme. It would be great if you could rummage around in your drawers and toy boxes and bring into School any unwanted

mobile phones you may have. Phones collected help our School gain valuable rewards and also the environment

benefits by keeping our landfills free of mobile phones and their array of hazardous toxic substances.

Please drop any unwanted mobile phones you may have in the collection box in the reception area at School.

KAN TABS FOR KIDNEY KIDS (AND SCREW TOPS FROM WINE BOTTLES) Your contribution DOES make a difference. Collect tabs and tops from relatives, friends and neighbours.

“Each time a tab is torn from a can and placed in a pocket or a bag, a conscious thought is made to support a sick child.” The Kan Tab is A Symbol for Hope. It is estimated that one tab is worth one second of support for a child waiting for a better chance of life through dialysis or a kidney transplant. Keep the Kan Tabs and screw tops separate and take them to Nayland Primary School office.
