Corpus Christi: Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

On this beautiful feast of Corpus Christi, we would do well to take a few moments and consider St. Thomas Aquinas.

This man was so devoted to our Lord in the Eucharist that he wrote prayers that read like love poems to the Blessed Sacrament. Perhaps we sang some of them at Mass today.

It is said that when St. Thomas said Holy Mass, he would weep in joy, adoration, and thanksgiving as he raised the Host and Chalice at Consecration. Clearly, St. Thomas fell in love with the Eucharist.

Today, on this feast of the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ, each and every one of us is invited by the Holy Spirit to do the same.

Every single one of us is called to an intimate connection with our Eu-charistic Lord, invited into a relationship that not only defines our very being at this moment but also gives us a glimpse into heaven itself. The Sacrament carries with it a sense of awe and wonder that renews itself every time we approach Him, refreshing and exciting us over and over again.

God is near us. Right this very minute. Right here. Right now.

Brothers and sisters, there’s nothing ordinary about that.

And there’s nothing ordinary about an opportunity to spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Receiving Christ, daily if possible, in the Eucharist keeps us in deep, intimate touch with the source and summit of our lives as Catholics.

But that kind of intimacy demands more. St. Augustine said of the Eu-charist, “No one eats that Flesh unless he has first adored it.” Our minds and our hearts must join in adoring and welcoming the Word made Flesh into our lives.

Receive Communion. Attend Mass. But take that next step as often as possible.

Pope Benedict XVI told us that the time in silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament prolongs and intensifies what takes place at the Eucharistic celebration.

Pope St. John Paul II said that communion and adoration do not stand side by side, but are indivisibly one.

Think about that. If you communicate, you enter into a fellowship with someone. Communicating with Christ means establishing a fellowship with Him.

That’s why John Paul II said communion and contemplation go hand in hand. We can’t truly communicate with someone without knowing him. To know someone, you must be open to him. See him. Hear him.

Pope Benedict said that love or friendship always carries with it an impulse of reverence, of adoration.

Communicating with Christ, therefore, demands that we gaze upon Him, and allow Him to gaze upon us. Listen to Him. Get to know Him.

Those silent moments we spend with Jesus are a priceless, powerful prayer. Eucharistic adoration is, as Pope Benedict said, simply the personal aspect of communion.

“In a world where there is so much noise, so much bewilderment,” Benedict said, “there is a need for silent adoration of Jesus con-cealed in the Host. It is a source of comfort and light.”

So the message is simple. Pay attention to Christ in the Eucharist. Receive Him, but don’t ever forget to adore Him.

On this feast of Corpus Christi, a day set apart to celebrate and adore the wonders of the Blessed Sacrament, take the beautiful words of St. John Chrysostom as your inspiration.

“Christ did this to bring us to a closer bond of friendship and to signify His love toward us, giving Himself to those who desire Him, not to only behold Him, but also to handle Him, to eat Him, to embrace Him with the fullness of their whole heart,” St. John said. “Therefore, as lions breathing fire do we depart from that table, rendered objects of terror to the devil.”

ST. ANTHONY’S BREAD

The devotion to Saint Anthony known as Saint Anthony’s bread goes back to the 13th century. It has been a source of many favors and graces and has also been of great aid to the poor and the needy.

According to most ancient chronicles, in the city of Padua, when the great basilica was being built, a child fell into a barrel of water and drowned. In her grief the mother called on St. Anthony and promised she would donate her daughter’s weight in grain for the poor if the child were restored to life.

While the mother was still praying, the child arose as if waking up from sleep. This miracle gave rise to the pious practice of giving alms to the poor as a petition

or in return for favors received through St. Anthony’s intercession.

The practice received its present name from a favor received by a pious girl named Louise Bouffier at Toulon in France in the last century. She promised loaves of bread for the poor in exchange for St. Anthony’s help. Her shop later became a center of devotion to the saint.

The Franciscan order encourages this act of charity to the afflicted and those in want every-where. It is a laudable method of sacrifice and of thanksgiving to St. Anthony.

Should you wish to take part in this traditional of prayer to St. Anthony here in our parish, please make an offering to our parish food cupboards. Place your offering in an envelope marked plainly “St. Anthony’s Bread,” and place it in the collection basket at mass.

Any offering, however small, that you care to make in honor of St. Anthony will be used to provide food for those who come to our food cupboards.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

REMEMBER THE SACREDNESS OF THE EUCHARIST — Another St. Philip Neri Story

Any of us who have had Holy Communion brought to a sick relative at home or in the hospital know how reverently we treat the Eucharist.

Years ago, it used to be the custom that as the priest carried the Blessed Sacrament through the hallways towards the sick person's room, he’d be accompanied, if possible, by an altar server who would walk beside or in front of him, ringing a little bell and carrying a candle. And those who were close by would kneel down until the priest, carrying the Blessed Sacrament, passed by.

St. Philip Neri, the famous Apostle of Rome in the 1500s, known for his sense of humor, understood this due reverence especially well. There’s a famous story about how he helped a parishioner understand it too.

The man used to come to mass regularly, but he’d never stay to the end; after receiving Holy Communion, he’d walk right out the door. St. Philip noticed this and worried that he’d forgotten how sacred Holy Communion really was.

So he decided to remind him.

The next time the man came to mass, Philip had on altar server get ready with a candle and a little bell, and put him beside the exit that he usually used. After receiving Communion, sure enough, he headed for the door. But as he took his first few steps out onto the street, the acolyte was right on his heels, ringing the bell for all to hear, and holding the bright candle for all to see.

Shocked and embarrassed, the man turned and asked what the server was doing. As instructed by St. Philip, he answered, "Well, sir, you just received our Lord, so you are like a walking Tabernacle, and we have to show Him due honor."

The man was stunned by the response. After he thought about if for a bit, he resolved to be more aware of God’s presence in the future.

It’s unlikely many pastors ever had the nerve to do what St. Philip did — and that’s probably a good thing — but you get the point. Each of us should be struck with awe that God Himself in the person of Jesus has deemed us worthy of a visit. If there’s ever a time to kneel and pray in thanksgiving, it’s after Holy Communion.

Dear Parishioners:
