The more things change, the more they stay the same. I’m going to challenge that this month. As in all things, change can mean a new beginning, but more importantly, it is a chance to build and enhance something that is already working quite well. As your Chamber of Commerce ticks along nicely, we are always looking at ways to adapt, improve and evolve with the business climate. Last year at this time, we moved into our new offices within Innovation Park. This July, we are unveiling a brand new, dynamic website to showcase our members while offering greater value and increased opportunities for advertising and promotion.

We have all had to face some challenges and prepare well for our changing laws, acts and regulations. The Chamber is taking this time of change to strengthen, update, re-brand and market like never before in a bid to grow and provide an increased awareness of our membership to the community and all businesses in Kingston. Renewed and improved communications will re-energize our current members, while attracting new businesses and individuals to work with us. Increased access to communications and marketing opportunities are but a few of the examples of things to come. Regarding the business environment, the Chamber has worked hard with the Ontario Chamber and its partners to prepare and work within a reformed tax package in the province. We have also prepared well to adapt to revised rules and regulations within the workplace and encouraged our members to do the same. All businesses and organizations must implement new policies to be compliant with new Workplace Violence & Harassment Requirements and Accessibility Standards for Customer Service. Like our new website, the Chamber is an organic business organization looking to change with positive times and challenging times. Remember to tell ANY and ALL prospective members, what a positive change joining the Chamber would be. They need to know that they will be joining a group of entrepreneurial people, who are passionate about wanting to grow their business with the help of the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce and its members, our city and community. A small change may just increase their chances of business success at the same time.

On Tuesday, the 8th of June, the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce and Kedco held a Breakfast at the Kingston Banquet & Conference Centre at Days Inn. This was the setting for the 5

th annual Business Hall of Fame inductions, as

7 names were inducted in recognition of their outstanding contributions to our community. The Kingston Business Hall of Fame was established four years ago to honour those who have made a significant impact on the Kingston community in the areas of business growth, quality of life and service excellence. This year, the honourees were Visionary: The Robinson Family, Community Builders: Stan Collins and The Springer Family, Mentors: Bob Clark and John Wright, Enablers: Fred & Mary Laflamme.

The Chamber thanks our host for the morning, the Kingston Banquet & Conference Centre and our sponsor, Bell, represented by Sandy Clement. We also thank our Master of Ceremonies for the event, Mr. Shai Dubey, Director of Cornell – Queen's Executive MBA, corporate commercial lawyer and Chairman of the Board at Kedco for conducting the ceremony with eloquence.

GREATER KINGSTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE GETS INVOLVED WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY TO HELP! On Wednesday, June 2nd, Tim Hortons restaurants invited customers to buy a cup of coffee and help send over 9,000 kids, who could otherwise not afford it, on the camping adventure of a lifetime. Camp Day, the single largest fundraiser for the Tim Horton Children's Foundation, took place at more than 2,300 participating Tim Hortons stores in Canada and over 180 stores in the United States. Pictured below is 2010 Chamber President Rodger James with Sherri Agnew, CEO of J.E. Agnew Food Services Ltd. They helped serve customers at the Tim Hortons location at 660 Arlington Park Place. As part of this 24-hour fundraiser, all Tim Hortons locations donated their entire coffee proceeds, in addition to funds raised through various Camp Day events and activities, to the Children's Foundation. Last year, thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of Tim Hortons store owners and staff and the generosity and support of their customers, an astounding $5.5 million (CDN) was raised on Camp Day!

Municipally Safe and Sound Thursday, May 27th saw the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce host our annual Municipal Reception upstairs at the Kingston Brewing Company. A special thank you goes out to our sponsors, Len Corcoran Excavating Limited and Norterra Organics. This enjoyable afternoon provides an opportunity for the Chamber staff and Board of Directors to welcome a mix with City Councilors and Municipal staff. It is also an occasion to award a deserving City employee with a gift of thanks to recognize their hard work, important foresight and diligence in carrying out their integral work in the City. We at the Chamber want to continue to fortify our productive work with City staff and the Municipal Reception is a unique way of achieving this goal. Together, we can continue to create a vibrant, healthy community. This year, Kingston Police Chief Stephen Tanner accepted the Municipal Recognition Award on behalf of the Kingston Police Force. Chief Tanner and all of his officers and staff have been instrumental in working diligently behind the scenes to help his department move forward. Positive restructuring, increased resources and a remarkable 2010 operating budget highlight the success stories within the force.

For over two decades, the Chamber Classic Golf Tournament has stood tall as a fantastic way to network, enjoy good company and try your luck on the greens. Oh, and let’s not forget the best prizes you’re going to find anywhere! The reactions to the complimentary putters for each player this year were overwhelming. The Chamber thanks Golf Town for this chance to celebrate over 20 years of Chamber Classis success. Despite the early mist and rain, which were more akin to a scene from the British Open, spirits were soaring and the compliments keep on coming. A big round of applause is also in order for Garrison Golf and Curling Club and Harvest Catering, who again proved to be hosts of the highest order, providing a great course, unmatched assistance and an unforgettable meal.
