On May 15th, members of the Adult Matters! group attended the 1st Annual Formal Dance at Aldaco’s Sunset Station. Everyone who attended looked awesome in their formal wear and had a wonderful time. Richard Hughes served as the DJ to help bring everyone to their feet dancing the night away, Bonnie Jaimes took some wonderful photos of each attendee as a keepsake, HEB provided a sponsorship to help offset the cost of the food, and Aldaco’s provided the party room free of charge. I want to also thank the following wonderful volunteers who helped make the evening so special: Julie Cheatwood, Melissa Butts, Lori Brunelli, Lesa Cochran, and Terri Marshall. The Down Syndrome Association continues to expand the Board of Directors, recently adding two new board members. Jessaca Bond is a self- advocate, a trained global speaker for Special Olympics, and has some wonderful ideas to help the DSASA expand to help serve children and adults with Down syndrome. The 3rd Annual Fun Run Rally was held on Sunday, June 6th at Caliente Harley-Davidson. This event was rescheduled from April 18th, and it turned out to be a great event attended by several families. There were 21 riders who participated in the 170 mile ride, and about 200 people who attended the event to help welcome the riders back to Caliente. We sincerely thank the following individuals, organizations, and companies who helped make this a successful fundraiser: Fred and Paige Bosshardt for allowing us to use the dealership for the event, as well as for arranging the band; P.J. Clark, President of Caliente’s H.O.G. chapter, and all the H.O.G. members for organizing the ride and helping at the event; Gary Sitler, for taking all the great photographs; Lon, Claudia, Kevin, and Sarah Wright and the Wright Production Specialist Equipment employees for all their hard work and donations. In addition we thank Tesoro for their sponsorship of $5,000. Because of this sponsorship and the sales of raffle tickets and food at the event, we raised over $9,300! Once again, I want to thank Jackie and Bill Shockley and all the volunteers in Rockport, Texas for hosting the annual Audrey’s Day at the Beach for all the families in South Texas. The families that traveled to Rockport from San Antonio had a wonderful time! Hi! My name is Jessaca Bond. Iam 29 years old, and I am theDown Syndrome Association ofSan Antonio’s newest boardmember. I joined the Board afterthe June meeting, and I’m veryexcited to be a part of thisorganization! I am the firstboard member who has Down

syndrome. I applied to become a board member because I wasinterested in presenting a self-advocate point of view on the issues.

I have lived in San Antonio (this time) since September of 2001. Isay “this time” because I have lived in this area several timesbefore. My Dad was in the Army, and we were in and out of SanAntonio during his career. While we were here, I attendedConverse Elementary and Kirby Junior High. As for high school, Iwas homeschooled in Missouri. I learned a lot from that. My firstjob was at Casey’s General Store in the town of Waynesville,Missouri. I worked there until we left to come to San Antonio. InSan Antonio, I have worked at HEB as a grocery bagger for abouta year and a half. I have also trained/worked at the UNICORNoffice to learn office skills. I liked working in the office very much.Currently, I am not working, but am keeping busy upgrading myskills. I would like to find a more permanent job in an officesetting.

I have participated in Special Olympic events since I was youngand currently compete in tennis, bowling and table tennis. I havehad training as a “Global Messenger” through Special OlympicsTexas and have given many speeches encouraging people tobecome involved with them. I would love to do similar speecheson behalf of the Down Syndrome Association. I have also donevolunteer work. My interests include music and photography.

As a board member, I hope to be the voice for other young adultswith Down syndrome in our community. I want to encourageinvolvement by others in all levels of the organization. I know Iam going to enjoy my term and hope to be a good representative.

A charitable donation to the Down Syndrome Associationmakes a difference. We rely on the support from compassionateand committed donors, like you, for the resources to preserve ourcause and mission. We envision a world in which all people withDown syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality oflife, realize their life aspirations, and become valued members ofwelcoming communities.

Donations may be made online by visitinghttp://www.dsasa.org/e-donation.cfm or by clicking here.

Your support for the Down syndrome community is appreciatedand valued.

TIM McINTOSH

by Christy Anderson, Member atLarge, DSA Board of Directors

Tim is fairly new to San Antonio ashe relocated his family from Tampa,Florida in 2008. He has beenmarried to Kim for 13 years, andthey have two sons, Beckett andEmerson. Beckett is 9 and Emersonis 6. Emerson, also known as little“E”, has Down syndrome. One ofthe big decisions in relocating toTexas was their desire for Emersonto have a good education. Kim’sstepmother, April Langston, is theDirector for the Boerne schoolsystem for disabled kids, and after hearing about the program, they felt it was a good fit for their son.

Tim is the Chief Investment Officer for SIPCO, which is aninvestment management firm. His personal hobbies includespending time with family, reading, and running. In addition, he isco-president of a local wine club and is the head coach of Beckett’sbaseball team.

Emerson goes to Kendall Elementary, where he is in the life skillsprogram under Janet Sheppard. Emerson is extremely active, upand about from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day. His favorite word is“GO”! He is a very lovable child, while balancing that with being ademanding “type A” personality. Emerson is doing well in school, but has issues with his speech and staying on task. He loves to runand play, watch the Wiggles, and go places in San Antonio like theChildren’s Museum, Dynamoze and Six Flags. Emerson hasbrought a lot of joy to the McIntosh family, and Tim has very highexpectations for their little “E”.

Tim was an active member of the Down Syndrome Association ofTampa, and his experience with that group is what prompted himto become involved with our group here in San Antonio. Not onlydid Tim want to be involved in our group as a participant andrecipient of many of our great programs and activities, but he alsowanted to continue his public service with a group that he felt hehad a personal connection to. Tim has been a board member sinceJuly 2009. Since joining the board, he’s been impressed and excitedabout where we are as an organization and feels that we are on thecusp of excellent growth, which will lead to giving great serviceand education to those in the San Antonio and surroundingcommunities. Because of Tim’s experience and skills, he is able tocontribute to the DSA Board with his insight of financial mattersand fundraising opportunities.

Tim would like to encourage people to be active volunteers byparticipating and volunteering in as many activities as possible. “Itis the assistance from the Down syndrome parents that makes allthe difference.”

Meet Your Board Adult Matters!by Julie Cheatwood - Adult Matters! Director

Adult Matters! is a social program specifically designed for ouradults with DS ages 18 and older. The focus is on providing anenvironment to help them further develop their social skills, buildfriendships among other adults with DS, and offer them safe andappropriate interactions within the community. In order to fosterthat environment, we encourage them to invite an age-appropriatepeer (another adult with special needs) to participate with them.DSA will pay the participation fee for both of them as well as a 1:4chaperone ratio. We realize that our adults depend on family andfriends for transportation to and from these activities, so we willalways try to plan activities that offer a place whereparents/guardians can gather nearby (restaurant, coffee shop, etc.)and visit with each other during the event.
