QCWA Allora would like to announce - Once Upon a Song(Early Learning

through Music and Movement) is being held at the QCWA Rooms in Warwick St, Allora. The current sessions are designed for children from the age of 6 months up to 3 years and their parents and or carers. Sessions are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month 9.30 am to 10.30 am during school terms. A delicious morning tea is provided by the CWA ladies and the morning session is over by 11.00 am.Queensland Child Health in Allora identified a need for parents with young children to have an opportunity to come together to socialize and develop friendships in Allora and surrounding areas. Allora CWA in collaboration with Queensland Child Health and Once Upon a Song decided to

support this need in the community. CWA provide the venue, the morning tea and Roslyn shares the songs, rhymes and activities. Once Upon a Song is a musical playgroup, an ideal way to support parents and their young children in the one setting. It is designed to support babies, toddlers and preschoolers grow into happy, confident children. The program helps to nurture development, foster a love of music and help parents use singing in the home. The focus is on having fun with and learning through music. The parents are an integral part of the activities as they are the first and most important teachers for their children. Parents also benefit from participating in the sessions. As well as the wonderful opportunity to strengthen the bond between parent and child, there is the social interaction parents share with

other parents, a time to make new friends and support each other in the parenting role.Children and Parents can enjoy an all-round sensory experience, with the opportunity to be seeing, touching, listening, singing and moving. Once Upon a Song is designed and facilitated by Roslyn Lakeman, a University Qualified Early Childhood Teacher with years of experience working with young children and parents or carers in various Early Childhood settings. Roslyn has sung in choirs, studied the piano for 8 years and has previously presented Once Upon a Song successfully on the Gold Coast for the past 6 years in community settings. To appropriately meet the needs of the children attending, the activities are dynamic, physically active and often spontaneous. There is an emphasis on the use of our

voices as the first and most important instrument. When parents sing with their children they provide opportunity for young children to hear our language in song. As adults sing with the children we can provide a suitable pace, support repetition and we can explore rhythm and rhyme all of which is essential for early language development. The children and parents use various untuned percussion instruments to extend and explore many of the dances and songs. During the session recorded music is used for dancing and movement activities.Parents are asked to provide a gold coin donation to the CWA for each child attending. For further information or to reserve a place for you and your child you can contact Roslyn on the Once Upon a Song (Community) Facebook page or at [email protected]

In recognition of an extraordinary period of service both as a member and as President, Mrs Rackley, also a Life Member, nominated Roy for Life Membership of the Allora Amateur Swimming Club, “an honour I feel he so deserves” she said.In his last report as President in 2017, Roy recalled the welcoming approach by the Swimming Club when he and his family were first invited to become members. “It was very much appreciated and indicative of the positive and social nature of the club.”During the ceremony Mrs Gartery spoke of “the nervous pleasure of inducting Roy as a life member of the AASC. I say

nervous not because it worries me, but because this word sums up all of the emotions and experiences I have had this year in my efforts to fill Roy’s size 13 Crocs!”“For 17 years Roy Nott has been at the helm of this historic club. Throughout this time, his professionalism, inherent sense of fairness, humility, team mindedness and dedication have ensured the club’s prosperity and good reputation.”Having joined this club in 2004, the Gartery family along with so many others have had the pleasure of enjoying a stable club led by a consistent and talented President with the best interests of each member at heart.“As Allora Swimming Club

Allora & District Historical Society NotesLooking back on the History of Allora’s Lodges & Friendly Societies, in honour of St. Patrick’s Day, 17th MarchThe Allora & District Historical Society appreciate that the new proprietors of Allora Pharmacy are continuing Jon Constable’s policy of allowing local organisations to have a display in the window. The items in the window are to acknowledge the “Orange” and the “Green”. There was a decidedly an antagonistic feeling between the Catholics and the Protestants in Allora in earlier days. The local ‘Allora Guardian ’newspaper reported that when the Catholics were in church the local Protestants lads threw stones on the roof and likewise the Catholics did the same thing. Read Oliver Neale’s reminiscences in the Allora Pharmacy window. The honour board of the H.A.C.B.S. (Hibernian Catholic Benefit Society), St Kevin’s 306, lists the Past Presidents. The first President T.C. Davies first took office in 1898. The new Roman Catholic Church was officially opened on 23rd January 1898. The Allora Guardian reported on the results of sports days and socials held by the Society. A report on St. Patrick’s Day in Allora on 17th March, 1905 held on the Recreation Reserve lists an open handicap, a boy’s race,

throwing the cricket ball, potato race, Irish Jig and other races typical of a school picnic. A grand ball was held on the same evening. The last president honoured was Jer. Collins in 1914 although the society continued to function for many years. The celebratory day for the ‘Orangemen’ was the 12lth July. This was the date of the Battle of Boyne, when Protestant Prince William of Orange defeated the Catholic King James II of England in 1690. The Protestant Loyal Orange Lodge in Allora was named the Royal Purple Heart Lodge, No. 40. Mention of an Orangemen “Soiree, Lecture and Ball” was made in the Allora Guardian as early as July 1890. The lecturer was Dr. Rutledge of Sydney and speakers included Rev. J.B. Morrow and Rev. W Jeffries. The annual Orange demonstration was held on

this day. Members of the lodge marched in procession to a service in St. David’s church or the Wesleyan church. The Allora Guardian reported the details of the celebration every year. In November 1915 a report of the unveiling of an Honour Board which was inscribed with the names of members of the Loyal Orange Lodge who volunteered for the front was printed. Names included Corporals C.L Sturt and J Kilpatrick, Privates R.L. Grayson, A.G. Kilpatrick, W.D. Lansley, W.G. Turkington and P.S Neale. One article on the 10th November mentioned the celebration of the anniversary

of the “Gunpowder Plot” which occurred in November 1605. The Allora & District have newspaper clippings of the activities of the lodge up until July 1923 in their collection.Displayed in the Allora Pharmacy window is the honour board for the M.U.I.O.O.F. (Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfel lows) which acknowledges the officers who were elected from inauguration of the M.U.I.O.O.F “Pride of Allora Lodge” in 1899. Bro. Burge, Bro. J Basford, Bro. M O’Conner, Bro. G Walker, Bro. R Sinclair, and Bro. E Holmes took office for the ensuing six

months. Their meetings were held fortnightly. An Anniversary Ball and Supper was held on Thursday 24th May 1900. Their half yearly financial meeting in 1906 showed that they had funds exceeding twelve thousand pounds sterling, available for members in any part of the world. Some of the funds were used for sick and funeral benefits of members. The last President honoured, A.A. Cameron died during WWI.Another friendly society lodge that was formed in Allora was the P.A.F.S.O.A. (Protestant Aliance Friendly Society of Australia). A branch was opened in October 1888. Fifteen members were initiated with Dr. Pain appointed doctor. The Royal Society of St. George originated in England held an annual celebration of England Day on St. George’s Day, 23rd April. It was formed in Allora in 1908 in the School of Arts with 15 (male) persons present.Hope Lodge No. 72 was consecrated on 11th September 1891 in the Protestant Hall. In David Newton’s history of the Lodge he relates that six Brethren were duly installed and invested as the first officers and Mr C.L. Fox, school master Allora, Mr C.C. Bourne, Station Master, Hendon and Mr. W. Beer, School master Spring Creek were proposed as candidates. After the meeting was closed according to ancient custom in Peace,

Love and Harmony, an adjournment was made to Mr. P Kelley’s Hotel where an excellent banquet was provided where 65 Brethren sat down. The Hope Lodge is situated in Gordon Street. The Independent Order of Good Templers, the Onward Lodge No. 85, Allora held their first meeting on the 26th March 1894 in the Protestant Hall. Of the twelve officials of the lodge four were women. The “Good Templars” had a letter published in the Allora Guardian regarding the fact that a group of men were in an intoxicated state, fighting and using obscene language in a street in Allora on Sunday when Sunday trading was prohibited. They stated that liquor is being sold on

Sundays. In 1906 the membership of the Lodge had increased to 44 members. Fortnightly meetings were held in the town hall.

The two honour boards in the Allora Pharmacy window have been stored away and have not been seen for many years.

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEK

There was a woman who was sick of her husband taking the mick out of her because she was blonde, so she decided that when he went out, she’d decorate the front room.

When her husband got home, he found her lying on the floor in a pool of sweat.

The husband asks, “Why you wearing two coats?”

She said “Because it said on the tin of paint, for best results put on two coats.”

RACQ reveals Qld’s lesser-known road rulesThe State’s peak motoring body has urged Queenslanders to brush up on their road rule knowledge, after it released a list of obscure laws that have caught out drivers.New data* revealed more than 400 Queensland motorists had been fined for having an arm or leg outside of a vehicle, 170 drivers had been fined for having an animal on their lap, and 113 pedestrians had obstructed a vehicle during a 12-month period.RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said it was a timely reminder to motorists who mistakenly believed police didn’t monitor minor breaches of the law.“Obviously, there are many motorists copping fines for breaking rules they may not be aware of,” Ms Ritchie said.“These road rules may seem insignificant to some but they’re in place to keep all road users safe.”Ms Ritchie said warning devices had also caused confusion, with 66 cyclists issued an infringement notice for riding a bike without a bell and 52 drivers received a fine for improperly honking their horn.“While it might seem friendly to beep your horn to say hello or goodbye, you legally can

only use your horn to ‘warn’ others,” she said.Ms Ritchie said while it should be obvious a cyclist should not carry others on a bicycle, six people were caught out.“Ignorance of road rules isn’t a valid excuse so we urge everyone to refresh their knowledge, whether they’re a cyclist, a pedestrian, a driver or a passenger.”

“Warwick is certainly buzzing with Commonwealth Games fever,” Cr Dobie said.“This is an exciting time for our region and an opportunity to make our own piece of Commonwealth Games history.“It’s a chance to show off our regional pride and I encourage everyone in our community to

come along and cheer on our Batonbearers and celebrate the occasion. It’s going to be a wonderful event.”For more information on Queen’s Baton Relay please contact Southern Downs Regional Council on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372) or email [email protected].

8 — THE ALLORA ADVERTISER … THURSDAY, 15th MARCH 2018 THE ALLORA ADVERTISER … THURSDAY, 15th MARCH 2018 — 9

Allora Golf NotesLast Friday’s Percy’s Fruit Duckrun results - After a three way tie Jack Fulwod won the day with 21 pts. Great to see you getting back out Jack, well

done. Runner up Doreen Duffy and ‘Garney’, good work to both of you. No one got the Approach for the 14th and Kev Harrison took the 16th pin. Congratulations to the winners and all players.Last Saturday was for Club Trophies and the 3rd round of Club Championships in winds that were brutal, the course was ready to eat a few players. The winner with a magnificent 63 pts was the ever smiling, jovial John Ellwood, well done John, good to see. Runner up with an equally impressive score of 64 in the windy conditions was Mick Dwan, good work Mick. Rundown winner on 67 was The Nightrider’ Jason Nightingale. Pin for the 4th and 13th John Ellwood, The Nightrider took the 8th and Rougan Geraghty took the 17th. Approach for the 2nd and 5th our ‘struggling’ B grader Rod Simpson with Bazza Brown Jnr claiming the 11th and 14th.After ‘moving day’ the 3rd round Bazza leads the A graders by 2, Jason ‘Nightrider’ Nightingale leads the B graders by 4 and Mark Scully leads the C graders by 9.Last Sunday was for Club Trophies and the final round of the Club Championship. With the pins moved to some of the more extreme locations and in near gale force winds with bit of trepidation players made sure they had enough golf balls then ventured out. The winner coming in with 38 pts was Tom Bartholomai, in those conditions that was great work Tom, well done. Runner up with 36

pts Steve Hughes, well done ‘Hughsie’. Pins for the 7th didn’t go, 16th Troy Gillam, 8th Rod Simpson, 17th John Sparksman. Approach for the 2nd Aaron Simpson, 11th John Millard, 9th ‘Scully’ and with the shot of the day on the 18th only to miss a sitter for Bird, Tom Brown.Once the scores were worked out our C Grade Champion for 2018 was Mark Scully with 360 strokes from runner up Russell Sparksman on 375. B Grade with three chaser less than 9 shots away for the final round the winner with 340 strokes was ‘Mr Consistent’ John Millard from runner up Jason ‘Nightrider’ Nightingale on 341. The A Grade winner with 311 strokes was Rougan Geraghty from Barry ‘Bazza’ Brown Jnr on 316. Congratulations to all our Grade winners, runners up’s and all players over the four rounds of Championship, the great spirit the game was played in was a highlight with the conditions over the last two rounds only goes to show why our course is one of the toughest to play across the region so well done to everyone.Congratulations especially our 2018 Club Champion keeping his cool for the second year running Rougan Geraghty, great work mate well done. Thank you to Sam Eaves for his sponsorship and all sponsors over the four days play, without the support this cannot be done and to our grounds staff for their hard work that continues, thank you all. This Friday teeing from 2pm will be the Percy’s Fruit sponsored Duckrun all welcome to attend then Sunday teeing from 11.30 will be the Allora Pharmacy March Monthly Medal all welcome to attend but don’t forget your sandbuckets and great golfing to you all.

Dylan Wilson, 11. Mitch Koina, 12. Jordan Henry, 13. Wade Austin - 14. Andrew Richardson, 15. Harry Fulwood, 16. Jesse Miles, 17. Nick Morris, 18. Mitchell Duff.Coach: Travis Burns.Reserve Grade - Reserve Grade Coaches Garth Lonergan and Michael Crank were more than happy with the efforts of their team who overwhelmed the Tigers 38 - 6.Lonergan praised the efforts of fullback Blake Lollback and front-rower Harry Shooter, “They were our two best.” “We were a bit rusty, playing well in patches, but it was encouraging to see the younger players stepping up and playing really well.”Wattles dominated early in the game with first half tries by wingers James Kedar & Damian McDonald and back-rower Jason Wilson for the home side to lead 16 - 6.Five-eight Dale McAntee, fullback Blake Lollback, second-rower Alex Morris and hard running utility player Max Rubie all scored touchdowns

outing.Former Wattles premiership winning forward Mitch Koina impressed in his first game in ‘green & gold’ after two seasons with the Ipswich Jets, and team skipper Dale Perkins inspired his side throughout against Souths. Souths’ Dwayne Duncan was judged best & fairest player in the match, receiving the inaugural Smith-McMillan Medal. The medal will be presented annually after the Souths verses Wattles pre-season trials, named in honour of Souths’ stalwarts Graham ‘Butch’ & Lynnie Smith and Wattles’ McMillan family who have contributed so much to each club.Wattles 22 (Nathan Gaulton 2, Dale McAntee, Josh Henry tries; Jesse Miles 3 goals)Souths 18 (Damian Mills, Jacob Whittacker, William Duncan tries; Dwayne Duncan 3 goals).Wattles: 1. Dale McAntee, 2. Jack Knight, 3. Nick Van Der Poel, 4. Nathan Gaulton, 5. Brayden Wilson, 6. Josh Henry, 7. Tom Morris, 8. Dale Perkins (C), 9. Liam Ross, 20.

Dale McAntee showed plenty of speed to add to his side’s total minutes later for the home side to lead 10 - 6.It seemed all Souths though in the final 10 minutes of the first half running in another two tries for their half time advantage. After what coach Burns termed a half time pep talk Wattles lifted in the second half, claiming two valuable touchdowns and defending well enough to deny the Tigers further match points.Centre Gaulton was again in the points with his 46th minute try before five-eighth Josh Henry sealed the result when he fooled defenders inside Souths 10 metre zone with a couple of clever dummies that created a clear aisle to score 16 minutes from full time. The match ended 5 minutes prematurely when Souths’ forward Stephen Galvin sustained a serious injury and was transported to hospital.Wattles mentor Travis Burns rested many of his better known players allowing an opportunity for younger performers to press claims for the top grade side that will kick-off in the 2018 Toowoomba Rugby League Premiership on Saturday.Burns was more than happy with the form of his future club stars, especially their gritty second half fightback. He especially rated the performances of big mobile forward Dylan Wilson, fullback Dale McAntee and centre Nick Van Der Poel who celebrate his 19th birthday in a fine

Wattles Warriors mentor Travis Burns was more than pleased to file his first

victory as a coach on Saturday evening when his green & gold A Graders finished ahead of Toowoomba Southern Suburbs Tigers in a closely fought tussle 22 - 18. Two tries by former Ipswich Jets Intrust Super Cup centre Nathan Gaulton layed the foundation for the Warriors to make a determined second half fightback, claiming their initial victory of the 2018 rugby league season. The Tigers may have waded their way through some difficult times of late, the famous club was facing it’s biggest crisis in their 70-year history due to a critical shortage of senior players threatening to sideline its A and Reserve grade teams this season. However, they have rallied admirably to field three competitive teams and take their place in the Toowoomba Rugby League’s 100th premiership season. Under the guidence of halfback Dwayne Duncan, Souths left the field at half time leading 18 - 10 after tries by their hooker Damian Mills, lock Jacob Whittacker & winger William Duncan. Mills’ try after just four minutes presented Souths a 6 - 0 lead until Wattles talented centre Nathan Gaulton burst into the clear from 25 metres out to touch down in the 13th minute.Soon after Wattles fullback
