How We Did It…

PlanWe created flyers and sent emails to our coworkers informing them of the upcoming food drive, and asked them for donations (both cash and food)

Action

On Thursday, July 21, Kathryn, Kesharri, Alex, Sam and Daniel

traveled to LSH with our donations, bagged the food

items, and distributed them to over 50 senior citizens

We informed Lutheran Settlement House of our plans to have future interns work with them and build a stronger relationship.

The day of…. 8 o'clock AM:

We met in the copy room with bags filled with the donations received, went over the game-plan, and waited for the Uber to take us to Lutheran Settlement House.

9 o'clock AM: Upon arrival, we met with Rachel Winsberg and Chloe Warnick who

told us about Lutheran Settlement House and the positions they held there. After being introduced to the seniors we were donating to, we began to separately bag and distribute the food.

10 o'clock AM: We received a tour of the grounds, including "the farm," which is the

garden (both community and private) in which Lutheran Settlement House grows their own fresh produce.

10:30 AM We were able to spend time playing bingo with the senior citizens we

donated to until it was time to head back to the office.

Key Metrics

Goal: Serve 50 Seniors• Our initial goal for the Food Drive was to

raise $350 worth of food/donations for the Lutheran Settlement House, based on Rachel Winsberg's recommendation.

• After the first two days of the food drive

we readjusted our goal based on our performance to 350 food items valued at an average of $1.50 per item for a total of $525.

• We raised a total value of $540: $470 in cash donations (used to buy additional food) and $70 in food donations.

• We were able to provide 55 senior citizens with a small donation bag containing 3-4 items of food.

Reflections

Kathryn: " T his experience and Lutheran Settlement House has shown me that even though terrible things happen in the world, there are still good people trying to make it a better place."Kesharri: "This experience has shown

me that we sometimes aren't aware individuals in our communities are heavily dependent on us for survival. Regardless of where we each come from, it is essential to give back and make a difference in our communities."

Samuel: " This experience has taught me the selflessness of giving back to a generation that has set up the world for millennials today. Helping just one local cause or even an individual person will go a long way. I learned and gained so much insight and stories from the senior citizens that I engaged with."

Abhinav: This experience has given me an opportunity to see first-hand how corporations can help bring a positive change in the community.

Alex: " Through this experience I have seen how one small act of kindness can make such a large impact and creates a ripple effect of change . Also the positive energy that surrounded this project from the members to our co-workers made all the difference"

Daniel: " This experience was truly eye opening. It has shown me that most individuals are not as fortunate as I am to have a home and family that supports me. Additionally, it has also showed me how something so small, such as a bag of food or friendly companion to talk to, can make a significant impact on someone's life. All it takes is one helping hand to make a difference. "
