This so-called “east-west” route, a rail line from Humboldt Bay area to the Sacramento Valley (just below Red Bluff), is not a new idea, but one that was abandoned in favor of the north-south line when San Francisco needed lumber to help rebuild after the 1906 earthquake and fire. Within a few years, the eastern route was shelved, but not before the route was scouted and mapped. The City agreed to a study to determine if that route might be feasible today. Dave Tyson was “the longest serving and most successful city manager in Eureka's long and storied history.” His efforts to advance economic improvement projects include the Eureka Boardwalk, the Fisherman's Terminal and the Eureka Marina and Wharfinger buildings. He hasn't stopped working to improve things and he’s here to fill us in on the progress of the East/West Rail Feasibility Study. A few months ago, we heard from David Hull about the Humboldt Bay Harbor Working Group (HBHWG), and their efforts to create job opportunities vis-à-vis the Humboldt Bay Harbor. These two efforts go hand-in-hand. The economic viability of the proposed rail lies in its use as a “land bridge” between the port and the national rail network. An estimated two or three thousand living wage jobs could be created as a result of this endeavor. Is an East/West Rail feasible? How would it be funded? What would be hauled on the trains? People? Goods? What about the north/south route? Bring your questions as we welcome Dave Tyson.

Humboldt Republican Women Welcome

Dave TysonIn 2011, the Eureka City Council heard a presentation by several citizens speaking in favor of conducting a study to determine the feasibility of an East-West rail route. This so-called “east-west” route, a rail line from Humboldt Bay area to the Sacramento Valley (just below Red Blu), is not a new idea, but one that was abandoned in favor of the north-south line when San Francisco needed lumber to help rebuild after the 1906 earthquake and re. openings in the following Districts:

On the lighter side, a story from Ronald Reagan:A Republican was running for oce in a Democrat part of the country. He stopped at a farm in a rural area to do some campaigning and, when the farmer heard he was a Republican, his jaw dropped and he said, "Wait right here while I go get Ma. She's never seen a Republican before." So he got her and the candidate looked around for a podium to give his speech from, and the only thing he could nd was a pile of cow manure. So he got up on the mound and gave his speech and, at the end, the farmer said, "That's the rst time I've ever heard a Republican speech," and the candidate said, "That's the rst time I've ever given a Republican speech from a Democratic platform!"

First, I’d like to thank all of you who participated in one way or another and provided support for our highly successful Membership Tea at the grand Samoa Mansion. We had a delightful time enjoying each other’s company, eating a variety of savory oerings, and ogling the outts provided by Belle Starr for our fashion show. Over seventy ladies attended ; some renewed memberships while others became rst-time members. Additionally, for those who were able to help with the plans for the parade, I say thank you. I know I speak for those in the parade when I say we had a great time and hope more of you will be able to join in the fun next year. Once again, I am totally impressed with the heart of our organization. Humboldt Republican Women, Federated, holds a special position in Humboldt County. We have a voice that must be heard. Yes, we were disappointed more than words can say that our candidate lost the presidential election. As I’m sure you understand, the past is the past, and it’s time to examine what went wrong, rectify the problems and stand up and be counted. We cannot stand on political rhetoric any longer but on creating policy. We have 2014 elections coming. In the past, we came alive three months before the election and wondered what happened when we lost. Now is the time to get involved. It doesn’t matter if you have never been involved before. It does matter if you have a heart to become involved. We will work and learn together. Become a part of those who realize that there is another battle on the horizon and we choose to ght to take our country back.Carol Hadley, President of the California Federation of Republican Women, stated, “Being courageous in politics many times takes us out of our comfort zones. Do I dare make phone calls, do I dare walk for this candidate in this neighborhood, or can I actually talk to others I do not know…?” I encoun-tered these questions and all the emotions that went with them when I ran for public oce. I had no experience in running for public oce, but I knew it was something I had to do. I put one foot in front of the other and went forward the best I could. Yes, I lost the race, but I learned a great deal. A very wise friend said something very special to me. He said, “Annette, you didn’t lose; you just didn’t win the race.” It took me awhile to gure that comment out. Now that history is on my side, I realize that it opened doors for me that wouldn’t have existed if I hadn’t had the courage to move in conviction and make the sacrices necessary, I wouldn’t be where I am today. As we expand our borders, there’s no telling where these new paths will lead.So now I ask you: Are you happy with how things are unfolding in our community? County? State? Nation? If you are not, please consider how you can be a part of a revamped Republican Party, whether it is locally, statewide, or nationwide and jump in. Be part of the solution.Join me at our next meeting where we will welcome guest speaker David Tyson, who will share the latest progress of the East/West Rail Feasibility Study. It’s exciting news! Warmest regards,

SCHOLARSHIP

Yes!

As you know, the story of Republican women's clubs begins many years before women even had the right to vote.Hundreds of independent Republican women’s clubs grew up around the nation in the late 1800s. In 1938, the Republican National Committee helped to organize these clubs into a national organization. Eleven states became the charter states of NFRW - California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Indiana, Mary-land, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Our local club was one of those rst clubs. We've been here since 1938.

Today, the NFRW consists of thousands of active members in local clubs across the nation and in several U.S. territories. We are proud to be part of the California Federation of Republican Women (CFRW), and the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW), the largest women’s political volunteer organization in the nation. When you join Humboldt Republican Women, Federated, you're joining forces with women throughout the state and across the nation, women who share your ideals and your goals for our country.

If you can make it - Plan on celebrating the NFRW 75th anniversary at the 37th Biennial Convention in Louisville, Kentucky September 21-22, 2013 at the Galt House Hotel. Hotel reservations can be made now and convention registration will begin soon. Watch for more news!

This year we join the NFRW and CFRW as we Celebrate our 75th Anniversary!

More to come!

McKinleyville’s Pony Express Days Parade and Festival is coming up - Humboldt GOP will have a car and be march-ing in the Parade, and will have an infomrational booth at Pierson Park on June 1st. Later in the summer, we’ll have more infomrational booths at the July 4th Celebrations in Arcata and Eureka, and the Humboldt County Fair.

We’ve been busy! On April 18th, our Annual Spring

Membership Tea was a huge success - held at the incredible Samoa Mansion

on a beautiful spring day. We had a great showing at the

Rhododendron Parade in Eureka, April 27th, looking stylish in one of

Harvey Harper’s vintage cars (Thank You, Harper Motors!)

It was good to see everyone at the Humboldt Republican’s Republican Of The Year Dinner at the Carson Mansion.

Joe Bonino was honored as Republican Of The Year and Art Chase, Carol Del Biaggio, Michael Hutson,

Fern Miller, Patricia Newell, & Dean Nielsen were honored as Volunteers Of The Year
