Henry Field has lauded the
“extraordinary” Gavin Murphy,
an under-the-radar country boy
from central Queensland who
prefers to keep a low profile, for the Australian
investor’s role in S F Bloodstock’s second
Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 1m2f) victory in three
years.
The remarkable feat, which came in the
relative afterglow of S F Bloodstock’s record-
breaking success in 2018 with US Triple Crown
champion Justify (Scat Daddy), was achieved
early yesterday when three-year-old colt
Authentic (Into Mischief) caused a boilover
in the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby at
Churchill Downs.
It led to a jubilant Newgate Farm managing
director Field, one third of the team who
manages the S F Bloodstock operation
alongside Murphy and Tom Ryan, passing the
accolades to his US-based partners for the
result. Continued on page 2>>

“Any time you win a Kentucky Derby,
or one of the world’s great races … it’s an extraordinary thing but it’s quite
an amazing thing with … how fortunate we’ve been in that race and how S
F Bloodstock has been as a group.
“The team works tirelessly to try and make good decisions on a daily
basis and it’s wonderful when the rewards follow.
“Tom Ryan has acted as the racing manager of the horse in the States
and he’s done a wonderful job working with Bob Baffert.”
But it was Murphy, a New York-based tax counsel to hedge fund
tycoon George Soros, who Field
reserved special praise for in
the hours after Authentic upset
short-priced favourite Tiz The
Law (Constitution) in the US$3
million race.
“I can absolutely tell you
that if it wasn’t for him this result
wouldn’t have happened today
and nor would S F Bloodstock
and Newgate,” Field told ANZ
Bloodstock News.
“He is a behind-the-scenes
guy, but I can tell you in all
sincerity I am not sure there would be many people with a brain for
bloodstock like Gavin.
“On a global basis - and it doesn’t matter if it’s this (Australian)
market, the US market or any market - he knows the bloodstock markets
intricately and he is the quarterback that makes S F Bloodstock what it is.
“Gavin has got no arrogance, no hubris, he’s just a straight shooter and
there’s no man that I know with greater integrity.

“I can tell you that he has mentored
myself and Tom Ryan over the past ten years. He is hugely successful in the
financial industry, but I think he is one of the greatest bloodstock minds
certainly that I have ever encountered … and he is the most extraordinary
partner to have in Newgate.”
Murphy’s demeanour and desire to stay out of the limelight, Field
says, should not take away from the significant impact that he has had on
the world bloodstock market which includes a shareholding in Hunter
Valley farm Amarina which is operated by Craig Anderson.
Field unashamedly admits that he consults Ryan and Murphy, as well
as fellow Newgate Farm partner Matthew Sandblom, almost daily about
the inner workings of the large-
scale stallion and breeding
operation.
That advice had been
pivotal in making calm
and calculated decisions,
particularly during the ongoing
Covid-19 pandemic.
“Gavin has the leadership
traits to tell us to be brave when
we should be brave and to be
conservative when we should
be conservative and to make tough decisions, but to make them with the
greatest of integrity,” he revealed.
“He does it with the most balanced state of mind and he does it all
with no ego or arrogance. He is a phenomenal person.
“To think he’s the guy who left Rockhampton 30 years ago and has
quietly built one of the greatest bloodstock empires on the planet is quite
extraordinary and anyone who knows Gavin will know that his brain
works like a computer.”

Field was at the 2018 Keeneland
September Yearling Sales where in consultation with Ryan, Murphy and
agent Donato Lanni, S F Bloodstock secured the colt for US350,000 in
partnership with Jack Wolf’s Starlight West.
Two years later - and four months after the Kentucky Derby is normally
run - Authentic became Hall Of Famer Baffert’s sixth winner of the historic
race. He also prepared Justify for S F Bloodstock, China Horse Club and
WinStar Farm, and oversaw the racecourse career of American Pharoah
(Pioneerof The Nile).
“Bob said to us all, Tom Ryan, Gavin Murphy and the whole team,
‘now if we can buy the fast milers I will stretch them out to win a Kentucky
Derby’ and that’s exactly what he did,” Field recalled.
“He was a horse the whole team liked very much, but Donato Lanni
really liked him and Gavin Murphy made it very clear that we weren’t
going home without the horse.”
In June, Spendthrift Farm purchased a majority stake in Authentic, which
came after the son of Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) had won his first three
starts including two at Graded level, and principal B. Wayne Hughes then
partnered with MyRacehorse.com to sell 4200 micro shares in the exciting colt.
“I am not certain what their plans are, but they have bought a horse
that has got a huge amount of speed and a huge amount of class. I am sure
if they do decide to bring the horse to Australia, he’s got the hallmarks of a
horse … who could succeed,” he said.
“B. Wayne is such an extraordinarily successful guy in his own right
and it’s wonderful from our team’s point of view that he has made a big
investment in Australia.
“He has surrounded himself with good people and we’re as happy for
him and the whole Spendthrift team.”
Authentic’s crowning victory adds to his success in the Haskell
Stakes (Gr 1, 9f ), his lead-up to the Derby. He has had six starts for five
wins and US$2,871,200 in prize-money, with his only defeat coming
when runner-up to Honor A. P. (Honor Code) in the Santa Anita Derby
(Gr 1, 9f ) in June.

Group 1 winners to clash in Run To The Rose
Group 1 winning two-year-olds Farnan (Not
A Single Doubt), Rothfire (Rothesay) and
King's Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) are set for
a Saturday showdown in a mouthwatering
renewal of The Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200).
The trio are likely to be joined by Peltzer (So You
Think), Prague (Redoute’s Choice) and Ole Kirk
(Written Tycoon) in the Rosehill feature which
is certain to have a major impact on the betting
for the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) later
in the month. High Bowman will once again
be on Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)
winner Farnan, with Jim Byrne, who will be
basing himself in Sydney, taking the ride on The
Everest (1200m) bound Rothfire.
Valley gallop for Russian CamelotLeading Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)
fancy Russian Camelot (Camelot) pleased
connections when he warmed up for his
return run in Saturday’s Makybe Diva Stakes
(Gr 1, 1600m) in a racecourse workout over
the weekend. The South Australian Derby (Gr
1, 2500m) winner took part in a racecourse
gallop at Moonee Valley on Saturday morning
with stablemate King Of Leogrance (Camelot)
as trainer Danny O’Brien readies the four-year-
old for his eagerly anticipated return to action
at Flemington. "They had a really nice gallop,
we've been really happy with them both at
home," O'Brien's assistant trainer Ben Gleeson
told Racing.com.
"Russian Camelot goes into next weekend very
fit with a lot of improvement to come so we
have no qualms about him seeing out the mile
first up. Physically he looks amazing.”
Big field for Makybe DivaRussian Camelot looks set to face a number of
high class rivals when he lines up in Saturday’s
Makybe Diva Stakes. Damien Oliver will be back
on board the son of Camelot (Montjeu), who is
in line to clash with, among others, Fierce Impact
(Deep Impact), Gailo Chop (Deportivo), Master
Of Wine (Maxios), Quick Thinker (So You Think)
and So Si Bon (So You Think). Craig Williams
will be reunited with last year’s Melbourne
Cup winner Vow And Declare (Declaration
Of War), while Jay McNeil will be onboard
Kings Will Dream (Casamento). Miami Bound
(Reliable Man), Nonconformist (Rebel Raider)
and Oceanex (Ocean Park) will have the option
of either tackling the Group 1 contest or the
1700-metre Open on the same card.
Premiere next for Nature StripChris Waller is pushing ahead as planned with
Nature Strip (Nicconi), the beaten favourite
first-up in Saturday’s Concorde Stakes (Gr 3,
1000m). The six-year-old gelding, who was
overhauled by The Everest (1200m) rival
Gytrash (Lope De Vega) in the final stages of
the race, sat outside Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi).
“We could have probably put the acid to them
mid stages but I think with the instructions
being for Ball Of Muscle that lead at all costs
had some relevance into how we rode Nature
Strip, so don’t be too concerned,” Waller told
Racing.com yesterday. “I think 1200 metres
it’s a more natural race for him, he can put the
others under a bit of pressure and basically put
pain into a race. He’ll bounce out of this run,
four weeks to the Premiere and then two weeks
to The Everest then down to Melbourne for the
sprint on the last day of Flemington.”
Humidor to stay in MelbourneA rejuvenated Humidor (Teofilo) will stay in
Melbourne after returning to form in Saturday’s
John F Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee
Valley, his first start for trainer Chris Waller.
“The plan was just to put him in races he’d be
competitive in and I was thinking probably come
up to Sydney for group 2 weight-for-age races
like the Hills Stakes and the Craven Plate, but we
won’t we’ll keep him down there (in Melbourne),”
Waller said. “It will either be the Underwood over
1800m or the Turnbull - keeping him fresh might
be the key.” Humidor, who has had five trainers
throughout his career, had not won since 2018
before his Valley success.

Crowds highly unlikely for Melbourne spring carnivalRacing Victoria is dissecting the state government’s road map for the
decrease of coronavirus restrictions and whether there are provisions that
would allow small crowds to be on course for feature spring metropolitan
race meetings. However, Premier Daniel Andrews in his media conference
said the risk of having crowds on course was not worth it. "The events will
still go on. The question is whether there will be people on site watching
it," Andrews said. "That will be to the extent that it's safe. Compromising
the strategy for a day at the races for 5000 people or 25000 people is not
worth it. It's just not worth it. As much as I respect the contribution that
sector makes, we have got to do it safely. Whilst we can give people a
sense of crowds. We do want to have a specific look at a number of major
events that are brand, jobs, it's all of those things. It's a little bit too early
to have a definitive number and to be yes or no. The key point is to just
work through that in a steady way, never compromising the strategy,
never doing anything other than following the advice. I know people want
certainty, particularly those who run those events. We are taking that off
line if you like."
Geelong hopeful for crowdsGeelong Racing Club chief executive Daniel Salter has not given up
hope that a small crowd could be on course for its feature race next
month despite the Victorian government’s announcement around
Covid-19 restrictions yesterday. Premier Daniel Andrews said Geelong
could be included in the metropolitan Melbourne Stage 4 restrictions
if the situation worsens in the coastal region. The Geelong Cup (Gr 3,
2400m) is scheduled for October 21. “That seems to be the case, the
light at the end of the tunnel is fading fast but we’re still optimistic
we might get a small number of people here on cup day,” Salter
told Racing.com. “We’ll continue to work with the industry and the
government and do whatever we can. It’s going to be one of those
years for all clubs; not being able to have crowds on your feature days
is frustrating but we’re in a much better position than a lot of people.
The racing industry has done a terrific job and it’s been great to be
able to keep racing, but the spring and early summer isn’t looking very
encouraging at the moment.”
No surgery for DunnDwayne Dunn, who fractured his C6 vertebrae when his head was
slammed into the barriers as the gates opened in race four at Moonee
Valley on Saturday, will not require surgery to repair his severe injury. The
Victorian Jockeys Association yesterday reported that doctors at Royal
Melbourne Hospital had concluded that he will need to wear a soft collar
around his neck for four to six weeks to allow the fracture to heal.
Snowden suffers fracturesGeoff Snowden sustained leg fractures when he was dislodged from his
mount who subsequently reared over on top of him in the mounting yard
prior to the third race at Moree yesterday. Snowden was taken to hospital
and is likely to now be airlifted to Tamworth for surgery.
NEW ZEALAND
Tavi Mac on road to HastingsTrainer Alan Sharrock had a smile on his face a
mile wide despite being beaten in Saturday’s
feature event at Te Rapa, the Valachi Downs
Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m). Sharrock
had just seen his underrated galloper Tavi
Mac (Tavistock) push quality mare Avantage
(Fastnet Rock) all the way down the Te Rapa
straight before going under by just on a length
after starting from the outside barrier. While Tavi
Mac had race fitness on his side, having won two from two leading into the
race, he certainly didn’t have size or glamorous good looks with the horse
affectionately dubbed ‘Frodo Baggins’ by his trainer and many supporters
due to his lack of size and plain features. “He certainly went above how
I expected, especially from that draw,” Sharrock said. “I’m just so very
proud of him as he never relented. She is a champion mare so there is
no slur on my little fellow in running second and there was a margin of
three to four lengths back to third so they did have it to themselves at the
end.” The runner-up placing guarantees Tavi Mac his place in the Tarzino
Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) at Hastings in a fortnight, a race that Sharrock is
eagerly awaiting.

Kiwi owners celebrate Humidor’s victoryHumidor’s (Teofilo) barnstorming finish to
land victory in Saturday’s Feehan Stakes (Gr
2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley forced part-owner
John Carter into a change of plans yesterday
morning. Carter, who shares in the ownership
of the eight-year-old with brother Mark and
sister Rachel under their Jomara Bloodstock
banner, spent a good part of his Saturday
evening celebrating the win and was feeling the
effects the next day. “I had a few things planned
for this morning but that didn’t eventuate as we
celebrated pretty hard last night,” Carter said.
“Watching the race, it looked like it was set up
for him and I was actually just hoping he wasn’t
going to disgrace himself. As it turned out it was
a 12 out of ten ride by Damian Lane, it was just
perfect as he rode him a treat. I think the ride
won him the race as he was positive on him and
the old boy showed just what he can do when
he’s right.”
Media man Rodley scores Derby winYou could be forgiven for thinking New Zealand
television presenter Aidan Rodley had found an
oil well, synonymous with many of the world’s
leading racehorse owners, after he won the
Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) yesterday with
Authentic (Into Mischief). Rather, he is a micro
owner of the star colt, one of 4,200 people that
took up an opportunity to obtain a hair in the
tail of Authentic through their purchase of a
US$206 share in the horse offered through
online website MyRaceHorse.com. Founded
by 43-year-old Californian Michael Behrens,
MyRaceHorse.com has sold 70,000 shares in 47
horses in the last year and owns 12.5 per cent
of Authentic, broken down into 12,500 shares
that were snapped up by 4,200 individuals.
“We literally own a hair in his tail and definitely
didn’t need to strike some home-town oil to
afford the share we bought,” Rodley said. “It all
came about off the back of a syndicate we put
together for a core group of mates that went
through high school together. Over the last
couple of years, we had grown apart a little, so
we thought we’d get together for a few beers one
day and look for ways we could stay in touch a
little better.”
ASIA
First for Mikki IsleArrowfield Stud’s shuttle stallion Mikki Isle
(Deep Impact) registered his first stakes
winner yesterday when Meikei Yell (2 f ex
Shiroinger by Harbinger) took out the Kokura
Nisai Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Kokura in Japan.
Sent out as second favourite on the yielding
track, the Hidenori Take-trained Meikei
Yell - ridden by the handler’s cousin Yutaka
Take after winning a newcomers race at the
course last month - proved too strong for
odds-on favourite Mondreise (Daiwa Major),
scoring by a length and a half with a further
four lengths to Fodla (Lord Kanaloa) in
third. Meikei Yell is likely to be aimed at the
Hanshin Juvenile Fillies Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)
in December. It was also a first stakes winner
as a broodmare sire for King George VI and
Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 4f ) hero
Harbinger (Dansili), who continues to stand
at Shadai Stallion Station in Hokkaido. Mikki
Isle, who did not return to Arrowfield Stud
this year due to Covid-19 flight restrictions,
will have his first Australian two-year-olds
this season.
80 for King KamehamehaThe late King Kamehameha (Kingmambo)
made it 80 individual stakes winners yesterday
when the regally-bred Bravas (4 c ex Verxina
by Deep Impact) took out the Niigata Kinen
(Gr 3, 2000m). The Yasuo Tomomichi-trained
Bravas, sent out as second favourite, came with
a late burst to defeat the free-wheeling Jinambo
(Deep Impact) by a head with a further neck
back to Sanrei Pocket (Jungle Pocket) in third.
Bravas is the first foal out of the two-time
Victoria Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Verxina
(Deep Impact), who herself is a three-quarter
sister to Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) hero Cheval
Grand (Heart’s Cry). King Kamehameha died in
August last year at Shadai Stallion Station.
INTERNATIONAL
39 for Dutch ArtCheveley Park Stud’s Dutch Art (Medicean)
sired his 39th individual stakes winner when the
lightly raced Starman (3 c ex Northern Star by
Montjeu) landed the Garrowby Stakes (Listed,
6f) at York yesterday. Having just his third start,
the Ed Walker-trained three-year-old beat
favourite Dakota Gold (Equiano) by a length
and three quarters, with Watan (Toronado) a
further four and a half lengths adrift in third.
The second foal out of the Montjeu (Sadler’s
Wells) mare Northern Star, Starman is a half-
brother to the Group-placed winner Sunday
Star. Dutch Art stood for a private fee in 2020.
Two for GokenHaras de Colleville resident Goken
(Kendargent) sired his second individual stakes
winner when Go Athletico (2 g ex Byburg by
Sageburg) struck in the Prix La Rochette (Gr 3,
1400m) at Longchamp yesterday. The Philippe
Decouz-trained two-year-old was winning for
the second time in four starts when beating
Sealiway (Galiway) by a length. Favourite Naval
Crown (Dubawi) was another neck away in
third. Goken stood for a fee of €3,000 (approx
AUD$4,900) in 2020.
39 for Le HavreLe Havre (Noverre) sired his 39th individual
stakes winner when Glycon (4 g ex Glorious
Sight by Singspiel) came out on top in a tight
finish to the La Coupe de Maisons-Laffitte
(Gr 3, 2000m) at Longchamp yesterday. The
Jean-Claude Rouget-trained four-year-old was
winning for the fourth time in five starts when
beating Villa Rosa (Doctor Dino) and Les Vertus
(Shakespearean) by a short neck and a head. Le
Havre stood at Montfort et Preaux for a fee of
€50,000 (approx AUD$81,300) in 2020.
King rules in red-hot MoulinPersian King (Kingman) roared back to form to
lead home a star-studded line-up in yesterday’s
Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr 1, 1600m).
The Andre Fabre-trained four-year-old was
registering his third elite level win, and his
eighth in total, when holding on from the fast
finishing favourite Pinatubo (Shamardal) to
score by a length and three-quarters. Circus
Maximus (Galileo) was another six lengths
away in third, narrowly ahead of Siskin (First

Group race double for KingmanJuddmonte’s Kingman (Invincible Spirit) sired
a second stakes winner on the Longchamp
card when Chacknak edged out favourite
Hurricane Dream (Hurricane Cat) in a bobbing
finish to the Prix du Prince d’Orange (Gr 3,

they crossed the line, with Grocer Jack (Oasis
Dream) another length away in third. Trained
by Fabrice Vermeulen, Chacknak now boasts
two Group 3 successes.
Bar bags another Group raceFavourite Called To The Bar (Henrythenavigator)

successful in yesterday’s Prix Gladiateur (Gr 3,
3100m) at Longchamp. The six-year-old beat
Think Of Me (So You Think) by a length and a

three-quarters of a length behind in third.
Namos strikes againNamos (Medicean) landed his third Group 3
contest of the year when taking out yesterday’s
Baden-Baden Goldene Peitsche (Gr 3, 1200m).
The Domink Moser-trained four-year-old beat
Majestic Colt (Clodovil) by two lengths, that
one getting the better of K Club (Kodiac) by a
neck in their battle for the runner-up spot.
20 for Invincible SpiritInvincible Spirit (Green Desert) registered his
20th Group or Grade 1 winner on Saturday
when Digital Age (4 c ex Willow View by Lemon
Drop Kid) took out the Old Forester Bourbon
Turf Classic (Gr 1, 9f) at Churchill Downs.
Digital Age led home a 1-3-4 for top American
turf trainer Chad Brown and was the longest
shot of his on the board, too, being sent off at
8-1. Ridden quietly early by Javier Castellano,
Digital Age wore down long-time leader Factor
This (The Factor) to win by three-quarters of
a length with two and a quarter lengths back
to Rockemperor (Holy Roman Emperor) in
third, a head in front of stablemate Sacred Life
(Siyouni). It was Digital Age’s second stakes win
on the Kentucky Derby undercard, having taken
the American Turf Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) last year.
Purchased for 325,000gns (approx A$622,850)
at the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling

(approx A$1.7 million). Invincible Spirit stood

the smallest of margins, bringing up a first top-
flight victory for trainer Neil Pessin. Ridden
by Corey Lanerie, Bell’s The One came with
a late flourish to deny last year’s Kentucky
Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) winner Serengeti Empress
(Alternation), who led at a hot speed from the
outset; the official margin was a nose. Sally’s
Curlin (Curlin) was three lengths away in third.
Purchased for US$155,000 (approx A$213,000)
at the Fasig-Tipton July Sales, Bell’s The One
has now earned US$790,040 (approx A$1.09
million). Majesticperfection stood at Airdrie
Stud in Kentucky for seven seasons before
relocating to Haras Rapetti in Uruguay in mid-
2018.
11 for CurlinHill ‘n’ Dale Farms’ leading light Curlin (Smart
Strike) brought up his 11th individual Grade 1
winner on Saturday when Global Campaign (4
c ex Globe Trot by A P Indy) broke through at
the highest level in the Woodward Handicap
(Gr 1, 10f) at Saratoga. Sent off as the clear
second favourite, the Stanley Hough-prepared
Global Campaign lived up to the expectations
his owners Sagamore Farm and WinStar Farm
had long held for him, scoring by a length and
three-quarters under Luis Saez. Odds-on elect
Tacitus (Tapit) finished second, a length and
a quarter in front of third-placed Prioritize
(Tizway). "I'm more than satisfied. He beat a
good horse. We're all excited. It's a great win.
That's what the game is all about. You try to
develop horses that will go on and be a sire, and
I believe he'll make a good one,” Hough said of
Global Campaign, the half-brother to former
Australian shuttle stallion Bolt d’Oro (Medaglia
d’Oro). Curlin stood for US$175,000 (approx
A$240,000) in 2020.
Five for Liam’s MapSophomore stallion Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s
Song) made it five individual stakes winners
on Saturday when Rushie (3 c ex Conquest
Angel by Colonel John), a one-time Kentucky
Derby (Gr 1, 10f ) contender, instead won the
Pat Day Mile (Gr 2, 8f ) on the undercard.
Michael McCarthy’s Rushie had finished
third in the belated Santa Anita Derby (Gr 1,
9f ), a race in which eventual Kentucky Derby
winner Authentic (Into Mischief ) was second
- both finished behind Honor A.P. (Honor
Code) - while he also finished third in the
Blue Grass Stakes (Gr 2, 9f ) at Keeneland at
his most recent start. Instead of stepping up
in trip, McCarthy decided to cut him back
for the Pat Day Mile and it paid dividends as
he defeated Sonneman (Curlin) by a length
and three-quarters; Tap It To Win (Tapit) was
a further half-length away in third. Rushie
may now contest the Preakness Stakes (Gr
1, 9.5f ), which will feature a number of
Kentucky Derby runners. Liam’s Map stood
for US$35,000 (approx A$48,000) at Lane’s
End Farms in 2020.
78 for GhostzapperEver-reliable sire Ghostzapper (Awesome
Again) made it stakes winner number 78 on
Saturday when Mystic Guide (3 c ex Music
Note by A P Indy) took out the Jim Dandy
Stakes (Gr 2, 9f ) at Saratoga. Run on the
same day as both the Kentucky Derby and
the Pat Day Mile in this strangest of years,
the Jim Dandy - usually a lead-up to the
Travers Stakes (Gr 1, 10f ) - instead served as
a prep for the Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9f ) in
Baltimore next month. Just six runners went
to post, with the Michael Stidham-trained
and Godolphin-owned Mystic Guide second
favourite behind Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 9f )
runner-up Dr Post (Quality Road). However, it
was Mystic Guide who proved much the best,
defeating Liveyourbeastlife (Ghostzapper)
by three-quarters of a length in an exacta
for the sire with Jesus’ Team (Tapiture) a
further three-quarters of a length away in
third. Ghostzapper stood at Adena Springs
Kentucky for US$85,000 (approx A$117,000)
this year.

Eight for Treasure Beach
Florida-based stallion Treasure Beach
(Galileo) brought up his eighth individual
stakes winner on Saturday when Raymundos
Secret (4 f ex Paulette Caveat by Greatness)
took out the John C Mabee Stakes (Gr 2,
9f ) at Del Mar. The Phil d’Amato-trained
Raymundos Secret, who was sent off as
favourite in the eight-runner field, led at even
splits under Flavien Prat, kicking clear upon
straightening. Market rival Lady Prancealot
(Sir Prancealot) proved the main danger,
charging home late, but she failed to catch
Raymundos Secret by a neck; Catch The Eye
(Quality Road) was a length away in third.
Treasure Beach stands at Pleasant Acres
Stallions near Ocala, with the Irish Derby
(Gr 1, 1m 4f ) and Secretariat Stakes (Gr 1,
10f ) winner commanding a fee of US$7,500
(approx A$10,300) in 2020.
First for Brody’s CauseThe Kentucky Derby undercard rarely
features a two-year-old stakes race given
its place early in the season, but the 2020
Kentucky Derby undercard also featured the
start of the Road to the 2021 Kentucky Derby
(Gr 1, 10f ) as the Iroquois Stakes (Gr 3, 1m)
awarded the first points that are used to select
the field. Those 10 points went to Sittin On Go
(2 c ex Set’n On Ready by More Than Ready),
who gave freshman stallion Brody’s Cause
(Giant’s Causeway) his first stakes winner.
Sent out as one of the longest shots on the
board, the Dale Romans-trained Sittin On Go
never looked in much doubt, racing clear for
a two and a half length success over Midnight
Bourbon (Tiznow) with Super Stock (Dialed
In) a length and three-quarters away in third.
It was a fitting win, given Romans and owners
Albaugh Family Stables also raced Brody’s
Cause, a two-time Grade 1 winner. Brody’s
Cause stood for $7,500 at Spendthrift Farm in
2020.
32 for KendargentKendargent (Kendor) celebrated his 32nd
individual stakes winner when Tokyo Gold (2 c
ex Biancarosa by Dalakhani) came out on top
in a tight finish to the Prix Haras de Bouquetot
(Listed, 1600m) at Craon on Saturday. The
Satoshi Kobayashi-trained juvenile beat
favourite Ludo (Penny’s Picnic) by a short
head, while Avrilomanoir (Penny’s Picnic)
was another head away in third. Kendargent
stood at Haras de Colleville for a fee of €15,000
(approx AUD$24,400) in 2020.

Perfect Match (Not A Single Doubt)
landed the spoils in yesterday’s
Class 1 HKSAR Chief Executive’s
Cup Handicap (1200m) and did so
with plenty in hand and also with December
riches in mind, as trainer Danny Shum
confirmed the 2020 Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1,
1200m) as his long-term target.
“I am aiming him toward December, he will
go to the Hong Kong Sprint,” Shum said.
The Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice)
gelding bagged his eighth career win from 16
starts to push his rating (103 for this test) deeper
into triple figures, enhancing his claims on the
end of year HK$22 million sprint.
“I think for me, he is in really good form, he
was the best looking horse in the parade ring –
so I thought he had a good chance today.”
French ace Alexis Badel agreed: “I’m glad
for Danny (Shum) because the horse was very
good looking today and he was fit and in very
good form, he just proved it.”
The way the five-year-old swept aside his
smart rivals in the season’s opening day feature
by an easy length and a half will have put the
sprint division’s leading players on alert.
“It’s early in the season and because he can
handle 1400 (metres) I thought his class might
be better than the 1200 (metres) horses today. I
did worry when he was three-wide but maybe
today it didn’t hurt, the outside is the better part
of the track,” Shum said.
Shum has a knack of producing winners
on the first day, the handler has now won four
of the last five editions of the season-opening
feature and claimed doubles on opening day in
three of the previous four years.
“I try my best every season, especially the
first day. I love to get winners on the first day,
as a local I always want to win on the first day,”
Shum said.
French ace Alexis Badel bagged the first win
of his 2020/21 season and acknowledged the
importance of striking early.
“It’s very important in Hong Kong to pick
up winners very quickly, it makes people happy
and the form is there; you just get confidence
and it’s even easier to get the good rides, people
give you support,” Badel said.
“I think his best trip is 1400 (metres),”
Badel said of Perfect Match, “so I was quite
happy with the draw being a little bit awkward,
because I didn’t have to put much pressure on
him to get his position and to make him travel.
Of course I was stuck three-deep but I know my
horse doesn’t necessarily need cover.”
“I was expecting the horses in front to stop
because of the distance and my horse just
relaxed, he was too good, I like this horse – he
gave everything,”

Moreira roars into action at season openerBy Steve Moran
Joao Moreira, winless on this day last year,
made a roaring start to the 2020/2021 racing
season with a winning treble at the opening
meeting of the Hong Kong racing season at
Sha Tin which also saw fierce riding rival Zac
Purton, trainer John Size and his triumphantly
returning contemporary David Hayes claim
doubles.
Moreira, three times Hong Kong Champion
Jockey, is used to red-letter days. This meeting
did not provide another but a yield of three
winners – including a heart-stopping victory
on Excellent Proposal (Exceed And Excel) –
was a more than satisfying day’s work for the
Brazilian maestro.
It certainly did not rival his 2017/2018
season start when he rode the first five winners
on day one – and it pales into insignificance
compared to his eight-win one-day hauls
achieved in Hong Kong, Singapore and Brazil
– but it was a dramatic improvement on last
year’s racing return when he had a rare winless
afternoon with just two seconds from his ten
rides.
Purton, four times champion and last
season’s premier jockey by a margin of nine
wins from Moreira, matched his 2019/2020
start with the two wins.
“I’m happy, it’s good to get on the board
with three,” said Moreira who is certain to
again make a strong bid to claim a fourth
jockey’s premiership and thus match Purton’s
premiership tally.
Moreira was on song from the start, guiding
the Caspar Fownes-trained favourite Joy Master
(Rogano) to a strong finishing win in race one,
the Class 5 Mount Parker Handicap. He then
overcame the outside draw (14) to win on the
John Size-trained Leap Of Faith (Sebring) who
started unusually attractive odds of 12-1 for a
Size-Moreira runner.
However, it was his last stride win on the
Size-trained Excellent Proposal (Exceed And
Excel) – in the Class 3 Sunset Peak Handicap –
which conjured up images of just why Moreira
is widely hailed as the Magic Man. His mount
was jammed between horses with nowhere to
go approaching the 300 metres and Moreira
had to bide his time until the 150 metres before
securing a clear path.
“I did think I wasn’t going to get there,”
Moreira said of his ride on Excellent Proposal,
“turning for home, the horse in front of him
(Alcari) just wasn’t going forward and came
back on me and dragged me back a little bit. He
showed he’s a good horse having to deal with
such a situation and was able to come back and
still get there.
“What I would say about him is that he feels
like one of those potential kind of horses. He
has shown us he does have a lot of ability.
“Leap Of Faith is a horse with ability too. No
doubt he’s one of those horses John Size may
feel comfortable, in the near future, to step him
up in distance as he moves like a horse who
could run a mile (1600 metres) or even further.
“I wasn’t going into the race that confident
about him because I thought he might need the
run but I was very glad and proud to be wrong.
Once again, it shows the Size style of training a
horse, putting them away and giving them the
time that they need pays off. I think that was the
key to him winning today.”
Size, like Moreira, failed to land a blow
at last season’s first meeting but the 11 times
champion trainer has a reinvigorated team
which may well carry him to a record breaking
12th title.
Purton combined with trainer Chris So to
win the first section of the Class 4 Yi Tung Shan
Handicap with Bright Kid (Show A Heart) and
completed his and Hayes’ double with a stands’
rail hugging ride on Metro Warrior (Fastnet
Rock) in the Class 3 Lantau Peak Handicap over
the straight 1000 metres course.
Millard’s strike-rate with stable newcomers further improved
Trainer Tony Millard further improved
his already excellent record with acquisitions
from other stables when Prince Of Gems (I Am
Invincible) landed the Lin Fa Shan Handicap
under Antoine Hamelin. The gelding had not
raced for almost nine months but proved too
strong in the 1000 metres Class 4.
“He’s shown me a little bit in his work but
not that much,” Millard said, “I haven’t really
squeezed him because he’s a little bit fragile.
I kept him fresh, we know he’s got the natural
speed and luckily Antoine rode him a very good
race because it wasn’t a great draw.
“With the weight off his back he could pick up
one in Class 3 now we hope but he’s going to need
to improve. It’s nice to get these kind of horses and
try to find out what’s wrong with them. He had a
couple of problems and we managed to sort them
out and got a result today.”

If recent history is any guide, then
Western Australian galloper Gatting
faces a monumental task to repeat his
Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1
Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s
Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.
Not only does the son of Hard Spun have
to defy the usually huge odds against longshot
winners repeating, he’d become just the third
horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25
have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)
and Northerly (2002) have been successful.
Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee
Stakes winners has managed to win another race
during the spring which is verily dumbfounding
and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status
in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has
six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres
in about as many weeks.
In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes
— won this year by Homesman — has been a
much better portent of things to come through
the balance of the spring carnival.
Six of the past ten Feehan winners have
won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions
include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,
who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic
Consol who didn’t race again that year.
Four of the past five Underwood Stakes
winners have come via the Feehan including,
of course, Homesman who won last year after
finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and
he looks a superior horse in 2019.
Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won
the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare
Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they
saddle another four-year-old, this time male,
in The Chosen One — who looks the principal
danger to Homesman.
The follow-up form of major race winners
is something of a fascination and generally less
impressive than you might think. Examining
the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is
interesting.
Begood Toya Mother was a fast and
spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes
albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing
him with some unexpected cover.
Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be
spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted
Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,
is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in
the past ten years] to have had an immediate
break and he returned to run second to Black
Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then
went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.
Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the
only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten
years, to score again that spring - taking the
Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy
Handicap respectively.
Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3
Naturalism Stakes has produced just two
subsequent springtime winners in the past
decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group
1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won
the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in
the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off
a remarkable training feat by
managing to rejuvenate the
once retired Black Heart Bart
(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and
second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three
years on from his first victory in the Caulfield
feature.
Western Australian Smith took over the
Warrnambool stables once owned by Black
Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir
and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt
to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.
Smith conceded that he was not overly
confident that Black Heart Bart would make
it back to the races until an encouraging
Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.
"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but
then he trialled well," Smith said.
"His first race was good and then his second
run was plain, but we thought getting him up to
the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't
be chasing all the time.
"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s
Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking
despite being last and a long way off the leader
Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but
the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"
Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little
bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer
Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart
sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow
margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his
first trip away and this was his first time racing
the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I
think it's important if I can just keep him in his
right grade I can keep him progressing along.
We won't aim too high I don't think at this
stage. And I think if we come back this time
next year we're going to have a bona fide Group
1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last
year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a
short neck.
Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)
was one and a half lengths away in third.
The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A
Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).
"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was
warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.
"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're
going to be in this'."
It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago
after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).
An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was
delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.
It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which
almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six
months after being seriously injured last October.
"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like
getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.
"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my
broken neck it's been a long road.
"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as
rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.
"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.
"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about
him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.
"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he
could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his
claim for a potential shot at The
Everest (1200m) when silencing
his doubters with an impressive
victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at
The Valley last night.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding
harboured plenty of criticism after his last
start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)
when he failed to settle on the front end.
However, he showed he is a bona fide Group
1 horse with an impressive win in the $1
million sprint.
Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip
began well from the inside barrier and was able
to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.
The track record holder over the course
and distance from last year's McEwen Stakes
(Gr 2, 1000m) Nature Strip kicked strongly
around the turn and was able to hold off a
gallant Miss Leonidas (I Am Invincible) by a
short neck. Continued on page 2>>

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)
closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian
McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further
back in fourth.
Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative
attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.
"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism
with him than we ever got with
another certain horse [Winx]
who was probably our last Group
1 winner here.
"That's racing, everyone has
got their opinions. He's a good
horse and today he stepped away
well. James didn't panic he just
got there gradually and it was a
good race.
"You think punters get
frustrated, well owning a horse
and training a horse when you're
running in these types of races,
it's a bitter pill to take when you
don't quite get it right.
"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had
something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I
did everything wrong."
Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at
Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci
Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race
will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week
later.
"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just
see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The
Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."
Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race
while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over
the mare's performance.
McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,
two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.
"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.
"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the
race."
Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne
Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)
took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money
of $1,879,285.
