IOWA, MAY 10, 2016 – TheDream.US, the na-tion’s largest scholarship program for DREAMers – immigrant youth who came to the country without documentation – in partnership with the states of Con-necticut and Delaware, is announcing a new ground-breaking scholarship program for DREAMers who are “locked out” of access to a college education in their home states – including the state of Iowa.TheDream.US Opportunity Scholarship will provide

a pathway to higher education for 500 highly-moti-vated immigrant students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or Temporary Protective Status (TPS) who live in states like Iowa where they are required to pay out-of-state tuition or prohibited from enrolling in the state’s colleges and universities all together.Eastern Connecticut State University and Delaware

State University are leading the way in this unprec-edented program to give students from Iowa and other locked-out states the opportunity of an affordable col-lege education. With the presidential primaries in full swing, and Donald Trump being the presumptive GOP nominee, all eyes are on the candidates for the democrat-ic nomination. While Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders- could not be more different, they all have one thing in common- they aren’t doing it alone. Behind the scenes are thousands of assistants, advisors, law-yers and other staff who ensure that their candidate puts her or his best face forward at all times. One of those people is Silvis native

Juan Alfredo Rodriguez Martinez, who was kind enough to be interviewed by Hola America during a recent trip home to visit family. Rodriguez was Nevada Outreach Director for the Ber-nie Sanders campaign.When asked to describe a “typical”

day in the life of a senior state presiden-tial campaign staffer, one could practi-cally hear laughter coming through the email exchange when he replies that there is no such thing, save for pres-sure and exhilaration.“I spent a lot of time on the phone

- putting out fires, interviews, staff updates, persuasion calls, meeting re-quests, and conference calls with Na-tional Political Outreach team as well as with the National Latino Outreach team. It was endless. If I was not on the phone I was in a meeting with my team or the State Director or was at an off site meeting” he says. He also helped draft press releases,

shoot commercials, and even got to in-teract with celebrities who endorse the Senator. Among them were members of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and ac-tors Mark Ruffalo and Gaby Hoffman.Rodriguez states that his proudest

moment on the Sanders campaign was helping the Senator secure the endorse-ment of one of Nevada’s most influen-tial labor unions.

“Timing is everything in campaigns” he recalls, “the Senator had a full schedule and my last minute union event cut into it further. We drove from a Veteran’s event and got there a little late. He met with Union executives first then he addressed the 100 or so invitees in the typical Bernie Sanders way we are familiar with. At the end of his talk he got a standing ovation. I was standing in the wings with the other staff. As he walked off the stage towards us he shifted his walk towards me and extended his hand to me and said “thank you for this.” It was sur-real and it caught me off guard. Look-ing back, it was very gratifying and it speaks volumes as to the character of Bernie Sanders”.He also says for the last week of the

Nevada campaign, his team was relo-cated to an office inside Harrah’s Casi-no on the Las Vegas Strip. “It was odd reporting to work on a political cam-paign in a casino!” he says.In addition to having held various po-

litical offices, Rodriguez has worked on many local, state, and national cam-paigns, and proudly states that his up-bringing in Silvis prepared him very well for his future career.The first seeds were planted by his fa-

ther, the late Ervey Rodriguez.“He was a proud member UAW Local

865 in East Moline and he shared with us why collective bargaining is needed and why it is very important to work-ing families” he said.From there, Rodriguez says his inter-

est in politics grew organically from being surrounded by the many Latinos fighting for their rights in the Silvis-East Moline area. He was a volun-teer with the late Bob Moreno’s cam-paign for Rock Island County Clerk in the mid-eighties, and it was with Moreno’s encouragement that he suc-cessfully ran for Democratic Precinct Committeeman in Hampton Township. Rodriguez-Martinez also cites UAW

organizer Eva Savalas (“a fighter for women and minorities who showed me to never back down from what’s important”) and former Silvis Mayor and Civil Rights leader Joe Terronez as major influences.When asked what advice he had for

young Latinos hoping to start a career in politics, Rodriguez says hard work is paramount. “The most important piece of advice

would be prepared to work hard and pay your dues. Very hard. The days start early and end late. You can work on average 8-16 hours a day and seven days a week if you work full time on a major U.S. Senate or Presidential campaign” he says, adding that going to college and networking are also ex-tremely important. Now that the Nevada campaign is

over, Rodriguez says that he expects to stay very busy with his company, Rodriguez Hispanic Concepts, LLC

(RHC). It is a full service Hispanic Advertising & Public Affairs company that Rodriguez says is branching out to include Latino advocacy, field cam-paign consulting work, and retail as well as government clients. Detrás de ellos hay miles de ayudantes, conseje-ros, abogados y otros empleados que aseguran que sus candidatos presenten la mejor parte de ellos todo el tiempo.Una de estas personas es el originario

de Silvis Juan Alfredo Rodríguez Mar-tínez, quien nos dio una entrevista para a Hola America durante un viaje reci-ente a los Quad Cities para visitar a su familia. Rodríguez fue el Director de Alcance en el estado de Nevada para la campaña de Bernie Sanders.Le pedimos que nos hablara de un día

teléfono – tranquilizando a la gente, resolviendo problemas, dando entrev-istas, actualizando a los empleados, cumpliendo con los pedidos, y haci-endo llamadas de conferencia con el equipo de Alcance Político Nacional y el equipo de Alcance Nacional Latino. Nunca acabo, si no estaba hablando por teléfono, estaba en una junta con mi equipo o con el Director estatal o estaba en una junta fuera de oficina,” él dice.Él también ayudó a escribir comuni-

cados de prensa, filmar comerciales y hasta tuvo la oportunidad de hablar con algunas de las celebridades que apoyan al Senador. Entre ellos él conoció a

Glenview Middle School is for-tunate, and very proud to have the Quad Cities ONLY youth Maria-chi Band. Students in grades 5-8 can participate during and after school learning to play music in the youth Mariachi Band. The Glenview Mariachi Band

held a taco dinner fundraiser on May 5th, 2016, along with a con-

cert by the two Mariachi Band groups, and entertainment. Local community advocates Eva

Savala and Diane Soliz donated $250 to kick off the Mariachi Glenview Uniforms Patron Pro-gram which will match sponsors with students in need of Mariachi uniforms. If you would like to be one of the 13 initial Patron found-

comienzo en el centro de Sterling este domingo 22 de mayo con el Show de Carros Anual en Sterling Main Street. Este show de carros anual, que una vez más va estar en la intersección de 2nd Ave y East 2nd Street cerca de Plain-well Brass en el centro de Sterling, ha sido muy popular en la comunidad y se espera que este crecerá.“Para el primer año empezamos con 71

carros, pero pronto tuvimos que mover el evento al otro lugar por falta de espa-cio en el local donde estábamos,” dice Janna Grojaring, directora ejecutiva de Sterling Main Sreet. “El año pasado nos movimos a un área más grande en 2nd y 2nd, y tuvimos 116 participantes. Nos gustaría ver un incremento de 50% para este año también.”Para el evento de este año hay una

alianza entre Main Street y el club de carros de área Sauk Valley Shifters.“El año pasado ellos tuvieron un even-

son in Downtown Sterling kicks off on Sunday, May 22, 2016 with Sterling Main Street’s 3rd Annual Car Show. Held once again at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and East 2nd Street near Plainwell Brass in downtown Sterling, this annual car show has been a huge hit with the community, and continued growth is anticipated. “We started with 71 cars for our first

event, and quickly maxed out the space available at our original location,” says Janna Groharing, Executive Director of Sterling Main Street. “Last year we moved to the larger area at 2nd and 2nd, and grew to 116 entrants. We’d love to see another 50% increase this year.” New for this year’s event is Main

Street’s partnership with area car club, the Sauk Valley Shifters. “Last year they held a swap meet a few weeks before our show, which was a big suc-cess for them. We began talking at our show last year about combining the two events and never looked back,” continues Groharing. The day will hold something for all

types of car enthusiasts. The swap meet will run from 8 AM until 4 PM. Car show registration will begin at 8 AM, judging will begin at Noon, with

awards presentations beginning around 2:30 PM. Advance registration is un-derway now, with forms available on Main Street’s website, www.sterling-mainstreet.org, or by contacting the Main Street office. Advance registra-tion is just $12, and will be $15 on the day of the show. Awards will be given to the Top 40 vehicles, along with a Best of Show. Also new for 2016 - a Mayor’s Choice Award. The Sauk Valley Shifters will be presenting an award to the best Rat Rod. The Car Show also serves as the kick

off for ticket sales for Sterling Main Street’s annual 50/50 raffle. Tickets will be on sale through the months of June and July, and a single winner will be drawn during Sterling Main Street’s annual Music Fest on July 23, 2016 at the Grandon Civic Center. “This is the 3rd year for our raffle and

the prize pot continues to grow,” says Brian Grummert, president of Sterling Main Street’s Board of Directors. “We are very proud to be able to say that 100% of our fundraising dollars is put back into the community through Main Street’s activities, events and down-town improvement efforts.” In addition to Main Street’s annual

partnership campaign and sponsorship contributions, ongoing fundraising ef-

forts help the organization be able to continue to grow annual community events such as Hot Dog Day and the Seasonal Sights & Sounds activities. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, to a spending cap for their Nov. 8 campaign, expected to be one of the state’s most expensive.Rep. Smiddy said he’s open to the idea but is hesitant because outside groups could come into the race and spend large sums against him. Ms. McCombie said she would ask such groups to stay out, although she would have no authority to tell them to do so. Both candidates have called the amount of money be-ing spent on state legislative races “ridiculous.” But neither wants to unilaterally stop fundraising and put himself or herself at a disadvantage. Rep. Smiddy’s District 71 seat is a top target for Republicans.Rep. Smiddy currently has about $440,000 in cam-paign funds, according to the most recent report filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections. Ms. McCombie, who is the mayor of Savanna, had just $13,000. However, big money is expected to start

flowing to her; she already has received donations from Chicago hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin and Uline CEO Richard Uihlein.Ms. McCombie suggested a spending cap of $500,000 each and said she would take no money from Gov. Rauner or his allies if Rep. Smiddy agreed to take no more big donations from the unions, his heaviest backers.“You know I could do a lot with a million dollars in Savanna or Fulton or Cordova,” Ms. McCombie said. “That’s serious road money. Instead we’re throwing it to the wind.”Rep. Smiddy said people are “sick and tired” of elec-tion talk and he wants to focus on getting a budget agreement. The state is now 11 months without a budget as lawmakers try to agree on a spending plan for the next budget year by May 31.He said he was not opposed to meeting Ms. McCom-bie after that date to discuss a spending limit. “My only hesitation is the dark money that could come in,” he said.
