Musical Welcome Newsletter No.27 Friday 7 th September 2012 Dear Parents We welcome Elise Miller (2 nd from left) back to our school after a short stint at Mt.Albert Grammar School. Elise’s friends shrieked with joy when she joined her Year 10 friends this morning. Welcome to Joshua Maisey from Auckland University. He is a trainee teacher who will be with us for the next four weeks. He attends Liberty Christian Church and is an elite runner. He wants to be a PE teacher because it marries together his two passions, Sport and seeing people succeed. The school musical “Esther – Star of Persia” was an astounding success. I have received many verbal and written congratulatory responses from parents and members of the public. One mother wrote: Congratulations to the students and staff of Hebron Christian College on their very fine performance of Star of Persia last week. I could see the cast working like a well-oiled machine backstage and the presentation out front was also very commendable. Well done Mesdames Huston and Scott! It was delightful to hear and see a new musical being written on a biblical subject and it presented the story very well. Special congratulations to Mrs Sellar for the well written script and Mrs Rauch for the most enjoyable music. Photographs and videos of the musical are currently been processed and may be available for selection and purchase late next week.

Welcome

Newsletter No.27 Friday 7th September 2012 Dear Parents

We welcome Elise Miller (2nd from left) back to our school after a short stint at Mt.Albert Grammar School.

Coming Up

Book Week Our annual Book Week starts next Monday and because of the proximity to the musical, will be a little down-sized from previous years’ activities. Two authors, fiction and non-fiction authors have been timetabled to speak to classes:

Jennifer Beck (left) is a fiction writer and will be visiting us on Tuesday morning, periods 1, 2, 3 & 4. We plan to divide the primary school into four groups of almost 40 and have her speak to these groups, one after each other. Maria Gill (right) will be visiting on the Friday afternoon, periods 5, 6 & 7. She is a non-fiction author, and more suitable to the older primary. We planned to have her speak to Rooms 14 & 9 in period 5 and Rooms 11 & 12 in period 6, both in the hall. Then in period 7, she will be running a writing workshop for 20 chosen intermediate students.

Talk by Dr Ian Hunter

Thank you for supporting the Student Council's Bake Sale . A wonderful result from Thursday morning tea, they raised just over $200 to sponsor the Essay Writing Seminar we are hosting on Monday night with Dr Ian Hunter. Thank you for all who helped and to the parents and students that baked such wonderful treats. A warm reminder to all NCEA students and parents that the Seminar evening is taking place this coming Monday the 10th September in the hall from 7.30pm-9pm. We are looking forward to Dr Hunter sharing his wealth of knowledge and expertise with us.

School Cross Country - Next Wednesday 1pm Our School Cross Country will be held this coming Wednesday afternoon at 1.00pm on the top of Mt.Albert. All school pupils will be taking part in the Cross Country run and parents are invited to watch the children run in their various age groups.

All races will start and finish on the edge of the soccer field on the mountain. Children will need to bring their usual sports gear and sports shoes. They will change at school and leave their school uniform and bag at school. It would be advisable for them to take a drink and a jersey up to the run. A sunhat and sun lotion may be needed if the weather is sunny. A coat may be needed if the weather is cold or windy We look forward to seeing as many parents as possible at this school-wide event. In the event of inclement weather, go to the school website and a message will be posted on the homepage during the latter part of the morning announcing a postponement or phone the school (846-2159) to determine whether the event has been postponed. SPECIAL NOTE FOR PARENTS: Please don’t take your child home as soon as their event is finished – stay until the awarding of certificates to the finalists is finished. If you must leave early, the child(ren)’s teacher(s) MUST be informed. Thank you

Welcome back Shining Cuckoo!

School Gala – 7 weeks to go!

Working Bee – Sat 22nd Sep

Hebron Tupperware Party

Shining cuckoos are found throughout New Zealand in native forests, parks and even in people’s gardens, and their unmistakeable call is a beautiful reminder that warm weather is on its way. At Oakley Creek reserve, in the Auckland suburb of Waterview, the shining cuckoo is a welcome presence, along with white-faced herons, tui, kingfishers, pheasants, mallards and many other birds that make their home in this valley between Unitec and Great North Road. The Friends of Oakley Creek, a volunteer group who work to preserve and restore the ecological health of the area, invite you to join them in welcoming the shining cuckoo on September 8, 2012, starting from 2pm.Go to their website for more info: www.welcomebackcuckoo.org.nz

It has been 2 years since our last school Gala and we are now into full swing with our planning. You will receive a very important notice today from your children requesting your help before and on the day of the Gala. We really need every school parent involved at some level to make this Gala a great event to the glory of God. A very big thank-you to our teachers who will be asking parents to sign up and group together by class to host stalls and activities in the Gala. The blessing of which is to get to know other families from your children's class that you haven't met yet. Next Thursday is the first action team meeting in Rahiri house staffroom from 7:15-8:15pm for planning and ideas for the Gala. Please come along if you have great ideas and time and energy to put toward the Gala. Carolyn Welch will be outside the computer room on the verandah every Tuesday from next Tuesday for the same purpose of catching parents questions and help with the Gala. Gala Donations From Next Week Please bring and leave in plastic bags in the school foyer over the next 3 weeks:

• Empty reusable pot plants that can be filled with plants • Bags of paper lollies that can be sewn into lolly lays to go around the neck • New items for the lucky dip from the $2 shop. Preferably wrapped in nice wrapping paper with girl or

boy on the outside so we know which bin to put it in Thanks so much for your generosity with these donations.

We need about 15 Dads and some Mums to do some cutting back of trees and shrubs along our bottom fence line to make our school more visible to the public. At the same time, our heritage garden around Rahiri needs some weeding and spraying before the Gala and our hanging baskets can do with a tidy-up. This Saturday morning working bee will be over before it begins and we will have morning tea and children are welcome to play in the grounds while parents work. Bring chain saws and loppers and pruning saws and weeding gloves and trowels for planting.

Don’t forget about our Tupperware Fundraising party coming up on Friday 21st September. Register with Kathy Bennett. Email; [email protected] or phone 021 113 2090 Have an enjoyable and sunny (hopefully) Spring weekend
