NEWSLETTER George Green’s School 1 Issue 7 - October 11th 2013 Principal’s Welcome Preparing our pupils for the world of work is high on our agenda in George Green’s. Along with the best possible exam results, we want all our young people to have the skills and training to be successful participants in the workplace in their chosen career. So when opportunities arise, we make the very most of them. This week half of our year 9 pupils attended a fantastic event organised by The London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC); this organisation is responsible for promoting physical, social, economic and environmental regeneration of the areas around the Olympic Park. The five day event was the Olympic Legacy Careers Event. It is a particularly important event as there are likely to be lots of opportunities for apprenticeships and other careers available in the near future. Our young people need to be ready to stand head and shoulders above others to secure the jobs. During the event, the pupils were asked to develop their employability skills through a range of tasks. They were interviewed by people in important positions such as the Chair of London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and a government financier. Through this, the young people learned how to make a positive first impression and how to present themselves during the interview. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and felt even more motivated when they heard how much money these people earn! Pupils had to carry out a ‘Dragon’s Den’ type activity where they worked in groups to develop a product; this involved them understanding the importance of research, working towards a specific goal with time constraints and team working. At the end of the process, they had to present their ideas to a large audience of other pupils and professionals. Having such high profile professionals involved improves the learning experience as these are real employers and therefore what they say has more credibility in the eyes of our young people. All of our pupils did extremely well but some did particularly well: Tony To (9A), Nasim Guerroumi (9G), Joyce Makiona (9H), Naomi Ojomo (9P) and Dean Bowman (9R). Well done to you all! Thanks to Ms Bailey, Mr Amey, Mr Ireland, Ms Rennie-Smith, Ms George and Mr Kemp for supporting all the pupils during the event. Principal’s Welcome Preparing our pupils for the world of work is high on our agenda in George Green’s. Along with the best possible exam results, we want all our young people to have the skills and training to be successful participants in the workplace in their chosen career. So when opportunities arise, we make the very most of them.

Cadet and Junior Regional Table Tennis Qualification

The London Regional table tennis qualification was held last weekend on Saturday and Sunday at Morpeth School. We had 11 young people represent George Green’s School both days and there was amazing display of table tennis from the players on both days. On Saturday Tai Luu was outstanding with his positive attitude throughout the day. He was resilient in every game he played and he said he felt really happy with his performance as he felt he gave his best in every game he played. Nayeem Kibria, Reese Croft also did great and supported each other when they played. On Sunday, the Cadet played their tournament, we had our wonderful year 8 and 9’s team which consist of Jay Arlain, Saiful Hoque, Jason Nunuay, Lukas Karpavicius, Leon La, Nasim Guerroumi, Tanvir Chowdhury and Vincent Chu. It was a nervous start for some of them in the first round as it was their first competitive tournament. As the day progressed they started playing better and enjoying the atmosphere especially talking and playing with other players. In the second round Jason Nunuay had a great match with Reese from Capital City. The game went to 2-2 in sets and they had to play the deciding set with a bit of audience watching. Jason dug deep with sweat dripping of his forehead and intensed focused in his eyes. Jason gave everything and he narrowly edge it 15 – 13. All the players showed good attitude and displayed good sportsmanship by shaking their opponent’s hands when they lost. Nasim Guerroumi had a great day as well especially as this was his first competition, he played some fantastic shots. They all said they had great time and they cannot wait for their next competition which is the National Junior and Cadet League on Sunday 13th October at Morpeth School. Congratulations to all of you for making last weekend a successful weekend. I am proud of you and I am looking forward to the next one. LET’S MAKE IT MORE SUCCESSFUL. If you would like to join the table tennis club, below are available sessions.

MAT CornerIt has been a busy week for MAT students as, already, GCSE exams have got underway.

Well done to Ms O’Leary’s French KS4 class. They have completed their second French speaking exam. The bar had been set very high from the beginning of the course in July. Most of them are expected to get B-A* so they needed to ensure that their controlled assessments are at least an A standard. Ms O’Leary was not disappointed, she thinks that most of them are at least a B/A standard, so well done to: Monica, Den Yeng, Fahmida, Summayah, Nawsin, Shahid, Rebekah, Tammana, Hannah, Sarina and Albion.Year 7 and Year 8 MAT students, do you want to be part of ‘The Brilliant Club’? Do not let this exciting opportunity pass you by. Ensure that you get your application to Miss Wright by Monday.

Year 9, 10 and 11 MAT students, are you a member of IGGY? Not logged in for a while? Not picked up your login? Now is the time to reconnect… or just connect! Remember, the more time that you put in, the more chance you have of being picked for future opportunities.

If you have any questions about any issues to do with More Able and Talented provision at George Green’s please contact Miriam Wright on [email protected]

Year 7 Form of the WeekThe year 7 form of the week this week is Black Rhinoceros having the greatest improvement in merit points putting them in 2nd place this week. Well Done 7R.

The Merits Cup

The merits cup is still a close run thing but will the leaders manage to hold for another 2 weeks until the end of half term? 7T this week have managed to get back to top spot. They have had to top spot on 2 occasions and are rarely out of the top 3. However we have 7O very close on their heels who have never been out of the top 3 and have overtaken 7S this week to come in 2nd overall. Will the merit cup go to who have seen the biggest improvement this week closing in on the leaders at the very end of term? At the moment it’s anyones A big push in the last two weeks could turn the tables. Good luck to all the year 7 forms.
