    THE DOCUMENT COMPANY

One day the caterpillar climbed up the stick and started

acting strangely. The boy worriedly called his mother whocame and understood that the caterpillar was creating a

cocoon. The mother explained to the boy how thecaterpillar was going to go through a metamorphosis and

    become a butterfly.

The little boy was thrilled to hear about the changes his

caterpillar would go through. He watched every day,

waiting for the butterfly to emerge. One day it happened, asmall hole appeared in the cocoon and the butterfly startedto struggle to come out.

At first the boy was excited, but soon he became concerned.

The butterfly was struggling so hard to get out! It lookedlike it couldnt break free! It looked desperate! It looked

like it was making no progress! The boy was so concerned he decided to help. He ran to get

scissors, and then walked back (because he had learned notto run with scissors). He snipped the cocoon to make thehole bigger and the butterfly quickly emerged!

As the butterfly came out the boy was surprised. It had aswollen body and small, shrivelled wings. He continued to

watch the butterfly expecting that, at any moment, the wings

would dry out, enlarge and expand to support the swollenbody. He knew that in time the body would shrink and the

    butterflys wings would expand.

But neither happened! The butterfly spent the rest of its lifecrawling around with a swollen body and shrivelled

wings. It never was able to fly

As the boy tried to figure out what had gone wrong his

mother took him to talk to a scientist from a local college.

He learned that the butterfly was SUPPOSED to struggle. In fact, the butterflys struggle to push its way through thetiny opening of the cocoon pushes the fluid out of its body

and into its wings. Without the struggle, the butterfly would

never, ever fly. The boys good intentions hurt the butterfly.

As you go through life, keep in mind struggling isimportant, in fact the struggles cause you to develop theability to fly. By struggling his way out of the cocoon, thebutterfly was able to fly.

Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa te whanau whanui o teKura Tuatahi o Whakatu greetings to friends and

    family of Nelson Central School.

After SchoolThis is a reminder that school closes at 3 pm each day andit would be helpful if children could be picked up as soonafter that as possible. When parents are late pickingchildren up it causes them some anxiety and also sets off apanic amongst adults as we try to locate parents.

Why birds cant fly up to the moon? This weeks writing sample comes from Yasmina in Room8. Yasmina started with a seemingly off the wall questionand was encouraged by her teacher to pursue it. She usedour inquiry learning process and consulted people and

other sources in her pursuit of an answer. The result is asuccinct piece of writing that shows the journey she took. The item is printed elsewhere in the newsletter. If you havetime check out the web version of the newsletter becausethat one will be in colour and you will be able to appreciatethe link between title, text and illustration.

Before School SupervisionAnother reminder - Before School Supervision is availablein the school library 7:30 8:30 am. For people who haveto start work early. This is a better option than havingchildren playing in the street and it costs only $1 per

session. The Ritchie McCaw Chopper Challenge for SchoolsWe have enrolled to take part in the Westpac HelicopterRescue fundraiser this year. The School Council haveorganised a programme of events to raise funds I hopeyou will give them your support once things get underway. Cross CountryThe weather didnt cooperate last week and the schoolcross country event was postponed until Tuesday. At thetime of writing this we are all walking around with fingerscrossed for dry weather! Following our cross country eventchildren will be selected for the inter-school cross countryevent on 9 June.

A story to think about as we start the termOnce a little boy was playing outdoors and found a

fascinating caterpillar. He carefully picked it up and tookit home to show his mother. He asked his mother if he

could keep it, and she said he could if he would take good

    care of it.

The little boy got a large jar from his mother and put

plants to eat, and a stick to climb on, in the jar. Every dayhe watched the caterpillar and brought it new plants toeat.

Why cant birds fly up to the moon?Birds cant fly up to the moon because most ofthe distance between the earth and moon is takenup by space and not atmosphere. The atmosphere

is the height of 70 ki lometres and the highest abi rd has ever flown was 11 and a half ki lometres.Birds need oxygen to breathe and oxygen iscontained in the atmosphere. Yasmina, Rm 8

    Student Council news

As mentioned in last weeks newsletter we have registered for

the Richie McCaw Chopper challenge to raise funds to support

the Westpac Summit Rescue Helicopter Trust . Link http:/

    www.richiemccawchopperchallenge.co.nz

Operated by 16 charitable trusts nationwide, many of the

choppers act as flying intensive care units providing a dedicated 24/7 service. From a defibrillator for a

premature baby to full life support systems, they are equipped to deal with almost any situation.

The following is a personal account by a Central student showing how vital the services of the rescue helicopter

    were to he r family.

It was Christmas 2007. We were in Spring Creek staying at my Aunties. We were asleep in the lounge marae style.

My Aunty Kathy woke up because my uncle wasnt breath ing properly. She tried to talk to him to wake him up .

Mum woke up and then she woke Dad I was really scared. I thought my Uncle wasnt going to make it.

My cousin Terence called the ambulance and my Uncle went to the hospital. He had another serious problem and

he needed to get to Wellington Hospital fast. The West pac helicopter came to get my uncle and take him to

Wellington. I think if the helicopter hadnt come my uncle would not be here.
