Maybe one question we should ask ourselves this Christmas is this: Do I need Jesus, really? If not, then why do we bother with Church. He is the whole point of everything we do at Church. And if we do think we need Jesus, let's act like it. I think it is easy (for myself at least) to treat Jesus like a roaring fire in fireplace: if we feel cold, we get a little closer, and we back away when we get too hot. In other words, we just give ourselves to Jesus only to the extent that we can gain from him and to what extent we can handle it. We are reserved in coming closer to him. We expose ourselves to him in small doses. Rather, shouldn't we give ourselves completely and totally to him? Keeping with the analogy of the fire in the fireplace, shouldn't we just jump right in? Yes! Because we do need him, and getting ever closer to him may burn a little, may hurt a little, but in the end, we might just end up inflamed by him and his Holy Spirit, which can't be all that bad.

Tal vez una pregunta que nos debemos hacer esta navidad es esta: ¿Necesitamos a Jesús, de veras? Si no, ¿Por qué nos molestamos con la iglesia? De hecho Él es el punto de todo lo que hacemos en la iglesia. Y si pensamos que sí necesitamos a Jesús, actuemos así. Yo pienso que es fácil (por mí mismo por lo menos) tratar a Jesús como un gran fuego en una chimenea: si nos sentimos con frío, nos acercamos un poco más al fuego, y nos alejamos cuando sentimos calor. En otras palabras, nos damos a Jesús sólo en la medida que ganemos de él o en la medida que lo soportamos. Permanecemos reservados para acercarnos a Él. Nos exponemos a Él en dosis pequeñas. Más bien, ¿acaso nos damos a Él completamente? Fieles a la analogía del fuego, ¿acaso no saltamos adentro? ¡Sí, porque sí lo necesitamos a Él! A acercarnos a Él aun cuando nos cause un poco de dolor o nos queme un poco, pero al final, tal vez nos quedemos inflamado por Él y por su espíritu santo, que no es tan malo!

The second Dinner and a Movie event for Igniters in Confirmation is Sunday, January 15 from 6-8pm at OLV. All teens in Confirmation must attend and bring a parent and sponsor if possible. Igniters should bring the following to the event:

The second Receivers Retreat for all children and teens in First Communion is Saturday, January 21 from 9am-12:30pm at OLV. Child/teen and a parent must attend. Come ready for a morning of reflection on the Eucharist, our faith, and receiving Jesus.

When my kids are grown, it won’t really matter if they got an A or a B in 7th grade history. It won’t really matter how far they can hit a baseball. It won’t really even matter much if they’ve made a lot of money or been “successful” according to the world. What will matter much more is this: 1. Are they humble — not that they think less of themselves, but that they think of themselves less. 2. Do they know how to be loved — are they humble and secure enough to be vulnerable. 3. Are they at peace — which means knowing who they are. 4. Are they filled with joy — because they live with a hope that transcends this short life. 5. Do they know they are small — that the world is not about them. 6. Do they know they are giants — that, to somebody, they mean the whole world. 7. Are they adventurous — willing to embrace a faith that will take them beyond the prison of their own limits. 8. Are they imaginative — able to see that the best parts of life cannot be measured or touched. 9. Do they embrace the moment — knowing that the present moment is the only moment they’ll ever have. 10. Are they virtuous — aspiring to the best parts of their nature. 11. Do they know how to give generous-ly — because to give of yourself is the only way to find yourself. 12. Do they know how to love — because this is what they were made to do (and because I’ve shown them by loving them every day unconditionally and by introducing them to a God who loves them perfectly).
You can earn a college degree without learning a single one of these things – and these are far more important life lessons.

Cuando mis hijos crezcan, no va importar si recibieron una A o B en la clase de historia del grado 7. No tendrá nada de importancia que tan lejos le pueden pegar a una pelota de béisbol. Y en realidad, no va importar si ganan mucho dinero o si han sido “exitosos” de acuerdo con el mundo. Lo que si tendrá mucha mas importancia es lo siguiente: 1. ¿Son humildes? — no que crean poco de si mismos, sino que piensen en si mismos menos. 2. ¿Se dejan amar? — son humildes y seguros de si mismos para poder ser vulnerables. 3. ¿Están en paz? — que significa que conocen quien son. 4. ¿Están llenos de gozo? — por que viven con esperanza que transciende esta vida corta. 5. ¿Reconocen que son pequeños? — que el mundo no gira en torno de ellos. 6. ¿Reconocen que son grandes? — que para alguien, ellos son el mundo entero. 7. ¿Son aventurados? — dispuestos de aceptar la fe que los llevaría mas allá de la cárcel de sus limites. 8. ¿Son imaginativos? — capaces de ver las mejores partes de la vida que no se pueden medir o tocar. 9. ¿Aprovechan el momento? — sabiendo que el presente es lo que tienen ahora. 10. ¿Son virtuosos — utilizando las mejores partes de su carácter. 11. ¿Saben dar generosamente? — por que dar de si mismo es la única manera de encontrarse a si mismo. 12. ¿Saben amar? — por que ellos fueron creados para amar (y por que yo los amo incondicionalmente día tras día y los ha introducido a Dios quien los ama perfectamente). Puedes obtener un titulo universitario, sin aprender ni siquiera una de estas cosas - y estas son lecciones mucho mas importantes.
