NEW MEXICO Petroleum Marketers Association Report New Mexico Notes • NMPMA Ruben Baca Executive Director, New Mexico Petroleum Marketers Association NM The 2014 New Mexico Convention and Trade Show was held August 19 th and 20 th at the Marriott Pyramid in Albuquerque. (For color photographs of the golf event please go to page 28 of this magazine.) It was a very good convention. The convention attendance was the biggest we have had in the last five years. The convention started with a golf tournament at the Isleta Golf Club. We had 92 golfers signed up to play, which is also the most we have had in 5 years, and all were pleased with the course. It was in great condition and everyone had a good time. The winners of the tournament were the team of Leland Gould, Bill Fortner, and Brandon Drake. The Convention continued with a Trade Show reception at 5:00 p.m. I am happy to report that we sold out the vendor booths and had a waiting list. Follow- ing the reception we moved outside and enjoyed a meal of steaks grilled to order, and they were great. Next we were en- tertained by a comedian named Mike James. He was very enter- taining, and everyone really liked him. The General Membership meet- ing was held on the morning of the 19th. It was very well attended, and the new officers were introduced: NMPMA President Doug Adams, Vice President Leland Gould, Director Alexandra Hodges- Swinford and Associate Director Sid Jenkins. The lunch speaker was Alan Weh, the candidate for U. S. Senator, and he captivated the crowd and was well received by those in attendance. Now that the November election is over, the results in New Mexico are as follows: The Congressional Representatives from New Mexico did not change. In District 1, Michelle Lujan-Grisham was re-elected; in District 2, Steve Pearce was re-elected; and in District 3, Ben Ray Lujan was re-elected. In the Senate Race, Tom Udall easily won his re-election. In the State Attorney General’s race, Democrat Hector Balderas was elected over his opponent Susan Reidel, and Diana Duran, Republican, won re-election as Secretary of State in a very close race. November 4 th was a big night for Republicans in the New Mexico Governor’s race and House of Representative races. Gov. Martinez defeated her opponent, Attorney General Gary King, by a record 57% to 43%. The Republicans took control of the House of Representatives; this is the first time that the Republicans have gained control in 65 years. The Democrats previously had a 37-33 majority, and it is now a 37-33 Republican majority. Chairmanships, Speaker of the House, and Majority Leaders will all change. The Republicans moved quickly and caucused on November 8 th and elected Don Tripp as Speaker of the House, Nate Gentry as Majority Leader, Alonzo Baldonado as Majority Whip, and Kelly Fajardo as Caucus Chair. With this change in party majority, bills that we have not been able to push forward such as Workman’s Comp, Right to Work, and repeal of the Alien Driver Licenses will now be in play.
