PRINCIPAL MATTERS
Welcome back to what will be another exceptional year of learning and supporting students to thrive at
Hastings! I also welcome all of our new families and look forward to getting to know you all.
Welcome too, to Mrs Kim Harburn and Ms Cindy Waldock. Mrs Harburn is taking part in the Teacher
Exchange program during 2020. Kim comes to us all the way from Canada where our Mrs Sarah Johnson
is spending 2020 living and teaching. This is a wonderful opportunity for both Mrs Harburn and Mrs Johnson
to learn about other education systems and acquire new knowledge and experiences that will benefit
themselves and their schools. Ms Waldock is working with us in Term 1 and brings a wealth of knowledge
and experience to Hastings.
Students have now been allocated to classes and we are all looking forward to settling into class routines
next week. First priority for teachers will be establishing a positive and secure class environment with agreed
expectations, learning and social behaviours that will assist all students to be successful in the classroom.
This group dynamic and commitment to a friendly learning environment is crucial in catering for student
needs and ensuring that the year ahead will be a happy and productive one. The classes, teachers, room
allocation and staff for 2020 are on page 3 of this newsletter.
If you have an inquiry, problem or issue to discuss, I encourage you to contact your child’s teacher. We
understand that your children’s needs are your top priority and we want to assist wherever we can. Please
contact the office to make an appointment when needed. If required, you can also contact the Stage
Supervisors for further assistance.
Mrs Janyce Sherrard Kindergarten & Year 1
Mrs Robyn Domanski Year 2 (Mon-Wed only)
Mr Tony Scott Year 3 & Year 4
Mr Karl Morris Year 5
Mrs Erin Barker Year 6
In 2020, our Learning and Support program is again being co-ordinated by Mrs Maree Wall, she is available
to provide assistance and support where needed.

Please remember that if you need to contact a staff member to discuss an issue or make an appointment,
you should either call the office or email the school on [email protected] Staff members
should not be contacted on their direct email unless you have been specifically invited to do so.
We are continuing to invest in a second School Executive supporting staff and students. Mr Scott will remain
in this role and he is available for parents and carers to contact with any issues that arise involving student
wellbeing.
Of course, our Deputy, Mrs Baker and myself are available wherever possible to assist with any issues
arising.

KINDERGARTEN 2020
On Tuesday we will welcome our 2020 Kindergarten students. Families are asked to start arriving at school
between 8:45 and 8:55am. Class lists will be displayed in the main corridor and on external classroom
doors of Rooms 1-4. Parents are asked to take their child directly to the classroom in the morning and give
their child one last kiss, say “Goodbye, I’ll see you this afternoon” and leave the classroom quickly.
Experience shows children settle better once mum or dad are out of sight.
In the afternoons, please wait at the top of the Kinder playground / play equipment and away from doors
and windows as it can be very distracting for the students to see mum/dad waiting outside.
The P&C Association invites you to stay and have a cuppa on Tuesday. Meet the mums and dads of your
child’s new classmates, help welcome new families to Hastings or just catch up with old friends. Our P&C
Association will provide a free morning tea in Courtyard 1 (at the top of the COLA) between 9:15am and
11am. We hope you can join us. (Tissues will be available)!
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
ALLMAN Surnames A-D
BOSWELL Surnames E-J
PARTRIDGE Surnames K-Q
WILSON Surnames R-Z
Our senior swimming carnival will be held next Friday, 7th February and it is expected all Year 3-6 students
will attend. There will be no supervision at school for primary aged students who do not attend the carnival.
Students are encouraged to wear their house colours and we ask parents to please ensure they apply plenty
of sunscreen on their child/ren before they leave home and pack a bottle in their bag for reapplication during
the day. Hats and a shirt that covers shoulders are a must! Joggers should be worn, NO singlet tops or
thongs. Parents who have offered to help with time-keeping are asked to meet Mr Scott at the pool around
9:15am.
Please Note … Year 2 students who turn 8 this year and who can confidently swim 50m freestyle (ie.
compete at Nippers and/or Swim Club) qualify to attend the carnival. These students participate in
competitive races only. It is school as usual for Year 2 students not attending the carnival.
The school canteen will open early Friday morning to enable students to purchase snacks to take with
them to the carnival. Lunches must be brought from home. Frozen water bottles are recommended. The
pool kiosk will be open but stocks may be limited.
The day’s events will commence at 8:30am with the timed 200m medleys (please make your own way to
the pool). From 9:30am the 50m freestyle will commence starting with 8 year old boys, 8 year old girls, 9
year old boys, 9 year old girls etc. After recess (11:20) it’s Junior, 11 Years, Senior Boys/Girls 50m
breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly events. Following lunch (1:30pm) all age 100m finals and the
junior and senior boys/girls 4 x 50m relays. A busy, busy day! The times given are approximate.
If it is rainy on Friday morning please DO NOT phone the school to inquire if the carnival is on or off. Send
your child to school prepared for both – attending the carnival or staying at school. It doesn’t matter if
they are in house colours for the day and their recess / lunch is catered for from home or lunches can be
ordered. Canteen lunch orders are not available for the pool.
Congratulations to our 2020 House Captains & Vice Captains who will lead the war cries at the carnival.

POSITION/S VACANT
We are seeking the assistance from parents to volunteer their time to coordinate and process our Student
Banking for 2020. Student Banking has been held on a Tuesday morning (9:15 to 10:30am) but the day
and time is negotiable, whatever suits you the best. No experience is necessary and training is available.
The job is more suitable for two but a third person for back-up would be good. Deposits need to be taken
to the Commonwealth Bank following processing at school.
The school receives commission from the Commonwealth Bank for
every deposit received.
Please contact the office if you can assist or would like an application
pack for your child.
Thank You:
We would like to give a massive thank you to Jorja Thompson (mum of
Alyssa & Tahlia) and her mum, Frances Herbert, who have coordinated
Student Banking for the past three years. Your assistance in helping
raise funds for our school is truly appreciated.
SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES
This year, whole school assemblies for all students will be held on Monday mornings at 11:30am. Parents
are welcome to join us for the assembly but we ask you to refrain from personal conversations and keep
younger children off the play equipment.
K-2 Unfortunately our hall is still out of action and will probably be so all this term. K-2 assemblies will
not be held until we have our hall back. Merit certificates will still be awarded in class but not on set
days or times.
3-6 Assemblies are held fortnightly (odd weeks) on Friday mornings – 11:30am to 12pm.
FRONT DOOR ENTRY
Our administration office and school foyer is a small area for such a large school. Unless coming to the
office on business or you have been called to pick up a sick or injured child we ask parents to please use
other access doors to enter / leave the building. Students have been reminded they should not use the
main corridor before and after school to access classrooms and we ask parents to do the same.
BUS TRAVEL
If your K-2 child is catching the bus, please attach a small
laminated card on the outside of their school bag, showing
which bus they catch each day. This helps student
arrangements after a busy day at school. Staff on bus duty can
also ensure students catch the correct bus.

FOOD FOR KIDS : A PARENTS’ GUIDE It can be hard for parents to work out how much and what type of food to feed their children. Which parenting
strategies can help kids to enjoy vegetables, healthy snacks and new foods? Join us in Food for Kids: A Parent’s Guide as we answer these tricky questions. In this course, we will cover
development of healthy eating for primary school-aged children. We will also discuss food marketing and health
messages, as well as sustainable eating. The course will also cover common food-related behaviours in children and
strategies to assist parents in child feeding. The user friendly online format, with a combination of videos, activities
and extension resources (for the keen beans) will appeal to parents. More details here: https://www.edx.org/course/food-for-kids-a-parents-guide-to-encouraging-healt This course has a partner course called Food for Kids: Discovering Healthy Eating which is for primary school aged
children. Food for Kids: Discovering Healthy Eating (for children aged 6 – 12 years old)
Learn about the science of food, nutrition and digestion using a fun approach. Investigate how the food you eat
contributes to your health and wellbeing. Over three sessions in three weeks, each of about 30 – 40 minutes in
length, students will learn: What is in food and how it is digested in the body; The healthy eating guidelines and
how to identify healthy food and drink choices; How to understand food advertising and marketing, and how to
create health messages; How healthy eating habits contribute to wellbeing; About reducing food waste and being
part of a healthy community. All the details here: https://www.classcentral.com/course/edx-food-for-kids-discovering-healthy-eating-17253
