Everything Old is New Again

Following a 50th Reunion Dinner Friday, October 2, 2015, several of the members of the Greece Olympia class of 1965 toured their old school on Saturday morning, October 3rd. Part of the tour included a memorial service to their fellow Viet Nam veterans and all veterans of their class. The Olympia class of 1965 was the largest class ever for Greece Central School District with over 560 students. Photo by Dave Bridges

Nearly 200 alumni from Greece Olympia High School (GOHS) Class of 1965 and their guests gathered for a 50th Anniversary celebration, “Ev-erything Old is New Again” at the Diplomat Banquet Hall on October 2, 2015.

Alumnus Reverend James Dugan was at the microphone leading the short program that included a re-membrance of 63 deceased class-mates and a tribute to all the Vet-erans as “God Bless America” was sung by all and was led by Miss Anna Jean Dedominicis, a retired Monroe County Music Teacher.

Joe Hanna, Douglas Ladd, Jack Bansbach and Ben Gioseffi were among the educators who were recognized for their contribution to the solid foun-dation created in the 50s and 60s by parents, neighbors, churches, Town of Greece schools and community lead-ers.

Schallers, Abbotts, and other haunts were visited repeat-edly by many while in town for the reunion. A tour of our

Bringing Joy to children ~ 6th Annual Lots to the Tots Fundraiserby Tami Raco

On Sunday November 15, 2015 from 12pm-4pm the 6th Annual Lots to the Tots Benefit Fundraiser will take place at the Lake Shore Country Club, 1165 Greenleaf Road, in Greece. This event is open to the public and will feature over 40 local vendors helping people get a jump-start on their Holiday Shopping while supporting children in need. In addition to all of the local business vendors and craft-ers there will be appetizers, desserts, coffee, silent auc-tions, basket raffles, and door prizes. Live Music from the talented Travis Fitch will also be provided as well as a cash bar. Pre-sale tickets are $8, at the door $12. Tickets can be purchased online at www.lotstothertots.com or at the Lake Shore Country Club.

100% of all proceeds from this fundraising benefit are used to purchase toys and gifts for the Marine coordinated Toys for Tots program. Toys for Tots is run locally by retired Marine Corps Veterans and helps provide toys to children of families in need during the holiday season.

Christina Lemcke first became involved with volunteer-ing at this benefit 7 years ago when she was stationed in Hawaii with her Marine husband. She then brought the program to this area when she moved back to Greece. This year is the 6th Annual Lots to the Tots Fundraiser and over

the years they have donated over $20,000 in toys and gifts to the Toys for Tots program. Christine is the President of Lots to the Tots heading it up with Vice President Laura Ac-ciaio. Volunteers run the entire benefit. They strive to be an active part of the community by helping bring the joy of the holiday season to children in need.

For more information on Lots to the Tots visit www.lot-stothetots.com or find them on Facebook.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich

November has always been a time to look back and reflect on what we are thankful for. With the holidays just around the corner, I would like to wish everyone a very safe and happy Thanks-giving. As the snow be-gins to make its way to the area, I would like to remind residents about our Winter Parking Ordinance. There will be no parking al-lowed on any town roads or grass rights-of-way from No-vember 1st until April 15th between midnight and 8:00AM. This allows for safer and more effective plowing and salt-ing of dedicated town streets and helps keep the cost of snow removal down, saving tax dollars for residents.

In the event a mailbox and/or post is damaged or dis-placed as a result of Town of Greece operations, the Town will replace the damaged mailbox and/or post with a stan-dard metal mailbox and wooden post at no cost to the resident. Please call the Department of Public Works at 25-4590 to report any damage sustained due to winter plow-ing operations. If the resident rejects the mailbox offered, the Town of Greece will reimburse the resident up to $35 upon submission of original receipt as proof of purchase. As always, if I can be of assistance to you in any town re-lated matters, please do not hesitate to contact my office directly at 225-2000.

Final Payment on Greece Town Hall made on October 1, 2015 Thursday, October 1, 2015 marked the last payment on the Town Hall Building at 1 Vince Tofany Blvd. The original bond was issued in 1998 for a period of seventeen years. Greece Town Hall remains one of the most modern gov-ernment buildings in the county, and is the centerpiece of a complex that has recently seen the additions of a new pavilion, pickleball courts, and a splash park. The retire-ment of this debt coincides with the plan to build a new police station so as to minimize the budget and tax impact. The new Greece Police Headquarters will also be located on Town Hall Campus.

Badgerow Park - Norm and his dog Katie enjoying a fall day at Badgerow Park. Norm walks Katie at the park several days a week. Badgerow Park is 66 acres located off Latta Road (Badgerow Park South) and Dewey Avenue (Badgerow Park North). There are three wood chip foundation trails, Cherry Valley Trail (.8 miles), Marcotte Way (.4 miles), and Plummer Lane (.5 miles). All three trails include mature hardwoods and upland habitat which contribute to excellent bird watching while hiking or cross country skiing.

Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets for Familiesby Ed OrlandoThis year, as in years past, two Greece Churches, Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4301 Mount Read Blvd. and the Lutheran Church of Concord, 485 Holmes Road, will be putting together Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets. Forty-five Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets will be prepared this year for families in need in the Greece community. Names of the families receiving the baskets came from the Greece Food Shelf, provided 35 names, and RAHIN (Roch-ester Area Interfaith Hospitality Network, a service for homeless families) provided 10 names of recent graduates from their program.Dinner baskets contain all the necessary items to make Thanksgiving Dinner, a 12-15 lb. turkey, cranberry sauce,

stuffing, 5 lbs. of potatoes, pumpkin pie, fresh squash, canned vegetables, coffee, tea, sweet potatoes and any-thing else that would add to a festive Thanksgiving Meal.Items to fill the baskets will be collected at the churches from Sunday, October 4, 2015, through Sunday, November 15, 2015. Assembly of the baskets will take place on Friday, November 20, 2015 and delivery on Saturday, November 21, 2015.

Greece Rotary Club Dictionary Project

Some time in late 2006, leaders of the Greece Rotary Club decided to participate in a Dictionary Project. It was a combined effort between the Greece and Hilton Rotary Clubs, along with support from Senator Joe Robach. Funds were budgeted, grants applied for and the books were or-dered. In 2007 the first shipment of dictionaries arrived and were distributed.

Since 2007, each summer Rotary members contact the principles and teaching staff at the eight Greece Central Elementary Schools and the three Hilton Central Schools who educate third graders. A schedule of dates and times when the third grade students can be assembled and pre-sented with the dictionaries from Rotary Members is com-piled.

Numerous Rotarians assist with the presentation at the schools which are centered around a performance by Ro-tarian/Magician Bill Gormont and a message from NY State Senator Joseph Robach.

Over the years all of the paperwork, grant acquisition, and ordering of supplies have been the work of teams of Greece Rotarians. This project truly is a club effort and since beginning in 2007, 12,498 dictionaries have been presented to Greece and Hilton third grade students. Each dictionary goes home with the student along with a let-ter to the parents from the Rotary explaining the goals of

Heel the Heroes…The Journey of a Marine and his Dogby Tami Raco

Lyndon was singing the Marine Marching Cadence and the pup began to howl along with him. From that day forward Lyndon developed a special attachment to the young Hus-ky pup. Some days Lyndon’s depression had him so recluse and uninterested in life this pup became the only reason why Lyndon would get up. He would have to get up and to feed him, exercise him and care for this young pup. This helped Lyndon pull through some of his hardest days of life. Little did Lyndon know this puppy came to him with a much greater purpose in his life. In a short time, Lyndon developed a close bond to the husky and he ultimately became a significant part of Lyndon’s recovery. The husky was named Ice, in honor of one of Lyndon’s closest friends Sgt. Wesley Rice. Sgt. Rice lost his life days before Ice was born, in a military training accident. This loss was one of many that Lyndon would be facing in the upcoming years where his struggles became serious. During this same year Lyndon was formally diagnosed with PTSD by the V.A. At this time he did not have the tools to manage or fully un-derstand what he was facing. His struggles continued but he was not alone. He surprisingly found companionship and support from Ice. This canine provided an element of grounding and calming to Lyndon’s tormented spirit.

Lyndon Villone and Ice. Photo taken by Jae Shim in Santa Clarita, California.

When Military Service Personnel come back from war with all limbs intact and no visible scars or wounds we of-ten overlook the toll of their service on their heart, soul and mind. This is what they call the “invisible wounds” of war.

Rochester native, Lyndon Villone, a brave young man, de-cided at the age of 19 to help defend our country’s freedom and join the fight with “The War on Terror.” He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2005 and served 4 years active duty as an Amphibious Assault Crewman. Lyndon served two tours in Fallujah, Iraq. He returned home and faced the chal-lenges of adjusting back into the civilian world. He began to experience the repercussions of managing the impact of war and the effects it had on not only himself but also the way it affected his brothers in arms. Lyndon’s struggles led him down paths of substance abuse, trouble with the law, alienating those who loved and cared for him and ul-timately a dark road of lonely self destruction. In the early part of 2011, a time when Lyndon began facing some of his toughest days, he took in a Siberian husky puppy. Initially this puppy only served as a way for Lyndon to make some money during his struggles. He planned to use this puppy to help with his financial burdens by selling him. One day

continued from page 22

Lyndon’s journey of hardship was very similar to what other returning servicemen/woman were facing. The in-visible wounds of war; the PTSD complications, the sub-stance abuse, suicidal thoughts and self-destruction were something many men and women were facing after their military service. What was different about Lyndon was that he began to find healing in the relationship he had with Ice. This also led Lyndon to begin Therapeutic Horse back riding at the EquiCenter. Lyndon found his happiest days were those that he spent with the horses and with his canine companion Ice. “At those times when I was with Ice and the horses, I felt my best,” said Lyndon. After experi-encing the healing benefits from this type of therapy Lyn-don began to volunteer at the EquiCenter and also trained Ice as a Therapy Dog. In September of 2012 Lyndon and Ice successfully passed the tests and Ice was certified as an official Therapy dog. He and Ice volunteered throughout the Rochester are providing therapy dog services. Lyndon found this type of work to be most rewarding. November 2012, Lyndon was about to face one of his most painful losses. Sgt. Chris Sawyers who served with Lyndon and was his roommate lost his life to suicide. This was Lyndon’s sixth close loss of a Marine Corps brother. This took him into one of his most painful emotional places. But at this place of grief, pain and darkness the idea of Heel the He-roes was born. In the United States, 22 Veterans commit suicide every day. Lyndon was empowered to help heal the invisible wounds of other Veterans by using the healing powers of canine and equine therapy. The goal of Heel the Heroes is to help Veterans turn their lives around. In 2013 Lyndon took his idea to Syracuse University to the Entre-

preneurs Boot Camp for Veterans program. This is where he learned how to implement his business plan and how to launch this non profit organization to help Veterans who face similar challenges. His dream was becoming a reality. Heel the Heroes is a non-profit organization that is an all-inclusive retreat for Veterans who struggle with PTSD. This retreat will be at no cost to the veteran and will provide ca-nine therapy, equine therapy, as well as therapy from other modules such as music, yoga, art and counseling services. The programs are designed to help Veterans hit their reset button. It is also geared at providing them tools they can bring home to better manage their triggers. Each Veteran will leave with not only the tools but also a short term and long term plan with goals and accountability. Many will be eligible to have their very own Therapy Dog. In 2014 Lyndon left the Greece area to begin to establish this re-treat near San Antonio Texas. The location was chosen for several reasons. The climate allows the program to be op-erational year round as well as being in one of the most populated areas for wounded veterans in the country. The township Lyndon is beginning this Schertz Texas was just named the “Purple Heart City.” Lyndon is keeping close ties to the Greece Community through various Veteran outreach programs as well as the Greece American Legion where he was just named as a Guest of Honor at their An-nual Wounded Warrior Concert.

Heel for Heroes is volunteer run and supported 100% ex-clusively by donations. The new organization is beginning their first official Fund Raising Campaign November 2015. Part of the proceeds from this fundraiser will help bring local Veterans to his Heel the Heroes Retreat in the fall of 2016. LOSTSTREAM

MAP

The STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK resembles another map - known to Pennsylvania anglers as the “Lost Stream Map.” The “Stream Map of Pennsylva-nia” was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. Professor Higbee succeeded in creating a map of the highest detail possible...a map that shows every stream and lake. He painstak-ingly plotted by hand, the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto a 3 x 5 foot map. The map sold extremely well – until it was lost several years after it first appeared in print. Incredibly, the printer entrusted with the original drawing and printing plates declared bankruptcy, then carelessly hauled Higbee’s 30 years of work to the landfill. The few remaining dog-eared copies became a prized fisherman’s possession. Professor Higbee was offered $400 for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key. The experts had always told Professor Higbee that reprints were impossible, because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue. Then, in 1991, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true. Computers made it possible to reprint the map. Holding an updated map, Howard said, “I never thought I’d live to see this day.” Then, by combining Professor Higbee’s knowledge with computer technology – the STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK was created.

Holiday Pet Tips from the Town of Greece Animal ControlWith Halloween and the upcoming busy holiday sea-son approaching the Town of Greece Animal Control Department would like to remind pet owners to take

some safeguards to protect their pets and trick or treaters. Halloween is a well-known occult holiday. Avoid letting your cats out at this time of the year. Cats black in color especially can be targeted. Be mindful with all the activity with trick or treaters, doorbells ringing, and costumes, this can be stressful for dogs. If you entertain during the holiday season and have family and friends over that your pets are not com-fortable with be aware this can cause stress on the pets. Dogs can be territorial and become protective of their home and owner when strangers are at the door and may cause a dog to bite when it would normally not. It is best to keep the dogs in an area of the house away from visitors at the door. This not only prevents dog bites but also prevents the dog’s escape. Enjoy this fun and busy time of year. My husband and I just returned from an incredible dinner at Bernard’s! Lindsay, our server, was professional yet personal, she knew the chef’s specials and relayed them with ease. We started with crab cakes, followed by Caesar salad. I had the filet which was cooked to perfection. My husband had a pasta dish that was delicious. We will definitely return....

Excellent food, charming atmosphere, unique bar crowd, and the most AMAZING food...ever! The wait staff is always atten-tive and friendly. The bartenders are superb. Owners, Shannon and Tom are wonderful hosts and always make the customers feel like family. Bernard’s is close to my home so I’m lucky to have the opportunity to go there often. I’m always drawn to.

Ready or Not Flu Season is Here!by Tami Mungenast Personal Trainer and Nutrition Counselor

Flu Season is upon us and on average up to 20% of the popula-tion can contract the Flu Virus. Most seasonal flu activity typi-cally occurs between October and May. Flu activity most com-monly peaks in the United States between December and February. Here are some ways to help you stay healthy during flu and cold season.

Vaccinate: CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. People should begin getting vaccinated soon after flu vaccine becomes available. Sooner in the season is better to ensure that as many people as possible are pro-tected before flu season begins. However, as long as flu viruses are circulating in the community, it’s not too late to get vacci-nated. Normally someone who receives the vaccine can reduce their chances by up to 70% from getting the flu.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D is a very important vitamin/hormone that helps with your immune system and fighting virus borne ill-nesses. This vitamin comes from sunlight, diet, and some supple-ments. It provides many health benefits including an improved

ability to reduce risks for certain types of cancers. Recent re-search shows that Vitamin D may benefit our ability to prevent colds, the flu and other similar upper respiratory tract infections,

which include viral symptoms like runny/stuffy nose, cough, and sore throat.

Avoid close contact with sick people: Influenza is spread through airborne pathogens and the best way to avoid be-ing infected by it is to avoid close contact to those who are sick. When out in public areas be sure to wash your hands or use antibacterial solutions that are alcohol based to minimize contracting the virus from public contact places.

Exercise: In particular Aerobic/Cardio exercise speeds up the heart rate to help pump larger quantities of blood and trans-fer oxygen from your lungs to your blood.

This helps increase your body’s natural virus killing cells. For more information on influenza visit www.cdc.gov/fluTo find a free flu clinic near you visit www2.monroecounty.

First time here so l just went with basic pizza. It was very good enough cheese and pepperoni. I got it to go but the girl behind the counter was very pleasant and made me comfortable for the 15 min wait. The place was clean and kept well with plenty of seating so I will try again soon for dine in. Darren S.

I am not a big Pizza eater. When I do it’s here. All the ingredients always fresh. The chicken wings always fresh and plump. They also have decent other selection of Italian food. I have only tried a few but always good. Tim C.

A good place to enjoy a pie with the family. The staff is always over the top friendly!! Craig T.

Great food. Eggplant was thick and the sauce was thin and flavorful. Highly recommend. Patty P.

Victory Road Association, A Pathway to Mending Lives

As we listen to the news each day of shootings, child abuse, and drug related issues; exchange tales of woe on the internet and social media about suicide, bullying and marital discourse; talk to neighbors, friends and family fac-ing the pressures of crisis in their homes and workplace, we wish we could do something besides listen.

Since 2007, the credentialed therapists of PetraPlace Counseling Services in Greece have been doing what they can to go beyond listening. Through counseling and out-reach work, they have worked tirelessly to help reshape the lives of those navigating relationship and family issues, abuse, trauma, teen pregnancy, addiction and other chal-lenging life situations. And now they are taking their work one step further.

A new project they are undertaking, the Victory Road As-sociation, is a nonprofit community outreach program that strengthens families and helps individuals in our communi-ty reach higher success in their lives. This long awaited vi-sion is designed to intervene and supersede issues that hin-der people and families from having an abundant life and reaching their fullest potential. The Victory Road Associa-tion strives to provide support that is far beyond the scope of counseling services. The Association will encompass comprehensive strategies and continuity of care that fo-

cuses on total well-being. With a multi-systemic approach, Victory Road will assess the needs of the community and develop strategies that enhance lives and transform hearts and minds.

Initially, programs will include those focusing on delin-quent youth and their families, marriage and relation-ship mentors, “Mommacare” providing support for young mothers-to-be, educational supports, millenial networking and more.

According to Stacey Reed-MacGregor, MSW LCSW CCTP, executive director of Petra Place and Victory Road Asso-ciation, Planning for the Victory Road Association began in March 2015 when those involved with PetraPlace rec-ognized the need in the community for an uplifting place of inspiration where people really matter and the truth is relevant and uplifting.

“We are committed to being a community resource where people find a personal and unique touch, a resource in which people find help and hope for themselves and those they care about most,” Reed-MacGregor said.

A kick-off ceremony and launch celebration for Victory Road Association will be held Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015 at Golden Ponds Party House in Greece. The Victory Road Planning Team will be on hand to discuss plans to work together to give those in the community an abundant life and a hopeful future through healing, wholeness, growth, change and transformation. For more information about Victory Road, call (585) 730-7777.
