Paddy Hill School Historic Sign UnveiledAfter many years of diligence and hard work, the Paddy

Hill School received a historic marker in the front of the building. This month marks the 175th anniversary of the Paddy Hill School, and Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich and Greece Central School District Superintendent Barbara Deane-Williams were both on hand to show support for this important event.

The William G. Pomeroy Foundation contributed funds and worked together with the Greece Historical Society to help make this sign a reality. An unveiling of the historic marker took place at the Paddy Hill School on Friday, Octo-ber 31, 2014.

“For 175 years, Greece students have been learning at the site we now called Paddy Hill Elementary School. Its designation as a historical site serves as a reminder of our proud heritage and our enduring commitment to educa-tion,” said Deane-Williams in a statement.

“This momentous occasion is a proud juncture in Greece history, as well as in education. The Paddy Hill School has been a staple of this community for 175 years, and this marker will ensure its place in history for many more gen-erations to come,” said Supervisor Reilich.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich

2014 has been a great year so far for the Town of Greece, and it only continues to get better. Many great events are rapidly approaching, and I’d like to keep residents informed of what the Town has in store. The Community and Senior Center will be hosting a Thanksgiving Party for seniors on November 19th. Entertainment will be provided by the “Johnny Matt Band.” Additionally, the Senior Christ-mas Party will be held on December 16th and the Family Christmas Party will be held on December 19th.

The Town is pleased to introduce a good old fashioned lighting of the Town holiday tree. The event will now be celebrated outside Town Hall with a newly planted tree. Residents can join together with their neighbors to sing songs, enjoy cups of hot cocoa, and revel in holiday cheer. Please save the date for December 2nd and more details will be released shortly.

As the Department of Public Works gears up for winter, I’d like to remind residents of a few tips to ensure everyone has a safe season. The winter parking ordinance will be in effect beginning November 1st and will end on April 15th. Parking on any road in the Town of Greece is prohibited be-tween the hours of 12:00 midnight to 8:00 a.m. Your coop-eration with these ordinances is essential to ensure streets can be plowed in a safe manner. In addition to the parking restrictions between midnight and 8:00 a.m., the Depart-ment of Public Works requests residents to park off of the street whenever possible during the day. Vehicles cannot be parked on or near sidewalks where they can interfere with the snow removal operation.

Finally, I would like to thank you, the taxpayers, for your enthusiasm in Town related matters. I always enjoy hearing from Greece residents and encourage them to contact my office should they have any concerns. I wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving, and all the best as we head into this holiday season.

Greece Rotary’s Lap Robes for Veterans Community Projectby Barbara Burke

Approximately 40 sewers gathered on November 1, 2014 in the Parish Center at St. Lawrence Church in North Greece to sew lap robes for veterans.

The project was hosted by the Greece Rotary and grew out of Greece Rotarian Kim Masiello’s idea. “Nancy Van Apeldoorn spoke at our club meeting. In past years we have donated money to her Lap Robes for Veterans organi-zation, and also to Honor Flight. I was looking for a “hands on” project that would involve the entire Greece commu-nity. Since I have many friends that sew, I thought this year, in addition to donating money, let’s donate our time sew-ing the lap robes,” Kim said.

The stitching event included volunteers from many com-munity groups including Lap Robes for Veterans, The Rota-ry Club of Greece, Greece Athena High School and various members of the Greece community.

Nancy Van Apeldoorn founded the Lap Robes for Vet-erans group. They started out as two members and grew to over 50 sewers. Their motto is “So many veterans, sew little time.” In the past 8 years the group has made and delivered over 3,000 lap robes to veterans who are partici-pating in the Honor Flight Program. Volunteers meet the veterans at the airport when they are returning home from Washington, D.C., welcome them home and hand out the lap robes.

Lap robes are small, quilted blankets used to cover the lap and legs. The patterns on the fabrics are geared to specific branches of the service, and/or have a patriotic theme. The process to create a lap robe has nine steps, all steps are completed assembly line style, by groups work-ing as “crews.” Volunteers completed over 50 lap robes on November 1st. These lap robes will be presented to local veterans this Spring at the Rochester International Airport when the veterans return home from their Honor Flight trip to D.C.

For more photos from the day and links to more informa-tion on Lap Robes For Veterans, Honor Flight and The Ro-tary Club of Greece visit our website www.greecenewsny.com.

The Rotary Club of Greece would like to thank St. Law-rence Church for the use of their facility and Martusciello’s Bakery on Lyell Avenue for providing lunch.

Barbara Miller is not exaggerat-ing when she says her business - In-terior Expressions by Design - has everything to make your house a home.

The inviting shop located at 1100 Long Pond Road (Suite 106) north of Ridge Road, is filled with an amazing selection of furniture, home decor, seasonal items, lighting - including candles - fashion accessories and gifts.

Barb has been at her current location for three years, but that short time belies her decades of experience in the retail indus-try.

“I managed The Apple Tree Gift Shop in Brockport,” Barb says, noting she has worked in retail for 35 years.

Barb did a little bit of everything for The Apple Tree - buying, displays, selling - and when it closed, she enjoyed being a grand-ma full time. But the retail world still beckoned.

Her years of experience had put her in touch with vendors and she also continued to be in touch with former customers. With the support of her husband, Barb ventured into her own busi-ness with Interior Expressions nine years ago.

“Once a retailer, always a retailer,” she says. The business was first housed in the craft/antique co-op in Hil-

ton. Barb started with one little booth and the business grew. Moving to her current location was “the next logical step,” she says.

Barb loves her Greece location in a small plaza just off busy Route 104. The plaza has lots of architectural charm and attrac-tive landscaping - the perfect setting for the offerings of her shop.

The first impression when entering the store is one of cozy, country furnishings and decorative accessories. Closer inspection reveals there is something for almost every taste - from primi-tive to traditional to contemporary. The variety of merchandise is amazing - and captivating - from sofas to earrings and large wooden hutches to funky change purses.

“You have to have a mix to appeal to a lot of different tastes,” Barb says.

She recalls one customer who came in and at first glance, thought the store’s offerings were not to her taste. After brows-ing, she changed her mind and went home with hundreds of dol-lars in merchandise.

Barb says new customers visit every day. “The business has grown,” she says. “I’ve been blessed that way. A lot of businesses are struggling, especially in retail.”

She is particularly proud of her faux floral offerings which change to match the seasons and which are different from those found in chain craft stores. Also available are a wide range of seasonal merchandise and garden-related items.

The furniture Barb offers is all made in the USA - some by Amish craftsmen and upholstered pieces by Hallagan Fine Fur-niture, which has been manufacturing in nearby Newark, NY for more than 110 years.

Hallagan offers hundreds of fabric and frame choices including contemporary.

Barb explains her success is most likely due to making custom-er service a priority. She welcomes every customer to the store and is always ready to offer friendly advice when it’s needed.

“It’s the rapport you build with the customer, making them feel special,” Barb says. “Every customer I have is special. I’m grateful for every purchase.”

Customers seek her out from as far away as Buffalo, Syracuse, Elmira and Horseheads.

She also makes an effort to give back to the community, par-ticularly during Small Business Saturday when a portion of her sales go to the Mission Share Outreach Center in Greece.

Her store is also getting some national attention via a trade publication. Barb and Interior Expressions by Design are featured in the November 2014 issue of Gifts and Decorative Accessories as one of the publication’s “25 Gifted Retailers 2014.”

“I’m really honored by the recognition.” Barb says. She also is quick to point out, “If not for my husband Jim, this dream would not be a reality.”

Interior Expressions by Design is open Tuesday - Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Thursday evenings until 8. Closing the store on Sunday and Monday gives Barb time with her family (she has grandchildren and great-grandchildren) and also time to re-charge.

“I’m fresh on Tuesday morning for another week,” she says. Fortunately for Barb, whether she’s at her house with family or at her warm and welcoming store, she’s always close to “home.”

Almost 30 million Americans have type 2 diabetes and every year it is on the rise. Experts largely attribute this to the rise in obesity. Type 2 diabetes is most common in adults but as rates of childhood obesity increase, more and more children are being diagnosed with the disease. The good news is that simple lifestyle changes can prevent and, in some cases, counter the course of this disease.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?Diabetes is a problem with your body that causes blood

glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia.

If you have type 2 diabetes your body does not use insu-lin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, your pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time the body isn’t able to keep up and can’t make enough

Using Exercises To Prevent Or Control Type 2 Diabetesby Tami Mungenast CPT, CNWC Atlas Fitness Spencerport NY

insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal healthy levels. If left untreated for extended periods, elevated glucose levels lead to heart disease, kidney failure, blind-ness and nerve damage. Type 2 diabetes is strongly linked to lifestyle issues in particular diet and exercise. The same techniques that are used for prevention of this disease (healthy diet and exercise) can also be used to control and possibly stop Type 2 Diabetes.

Exercise Can HelpMuch of the latest research has put exercise at the fore-

front in the prevention, control and treatment of diabetes. Exercise has been proved to decrease insulin resistance. Patients who follow in a regular exercise program find that their cells more efficiently respond to insulin and improve the glucose removal from the blood and into the cell. Ex-ercise also helps to decrease the risk of cardiovascular dis-ease by lowering blood pressure, reducing bad cholesterol and body fat.

Danielle Zielinski Photography

Spotlight on Business

by Barbara BurkeDanielle Zielinski started

her photography business 14 years ago as a wed-ding and traditional por-trait photographer. Over the years the business has evolved into something much more.

“I am always looking be-yond the usual moments. I am looking to photograph and capture a moment in history, family history,” Danielle says. She looks a little deeper. “When I pho-tograph a wedding I want

the casual moments… between the bride and a friend, two family members who exchange a look or a knowing embrace, these are the smaller moments, something the bride doesn’t always get to see. These are the images of today, preserved for the future,” Danielle says.

Danielle’s interest in photography started with a camera she received in 8th grade. In the beginning it was a hobby, she won a Kodak Award and had her photos on display at the old Sibley Building in downtown Rochester. She attend-ed college, studying Fashion Merchandising and later stud-ied with various photographers from all around the world, attending workshops and developing her own style.

Currently, Danielle’s main focus is documentary style photography. She attends a family event or outing and pho-tographs the day. “With many families I document their ac-tivities. I call it “going on an adventure,” she says. Whether it is a visit to the park, apple picking, or even story night in the family home, any family gathering where relationships are being formed and the family is experiencing everyday life. It is story telling, a “Day in a Life” type of documen-tary.

Families come back to Danielle year after year for photo sessions. “I start with the engagement photos, then wed-ding, the first child, second child, then family portraits and special events. I really become part of their family,” she says.

Danielle still maintains a wedding and formal portrait as-pect to her photography business. She is assisted on her wedding and portrait photo sessions by her husband Eric.

Danielle and Eric Zielinski’s grandson, Zachariah Militello, and daughter, Elise Militello. Photo by Danielle Zielinski.

“It is great to have a second set of eyes. He assists with the lighting and arrangements and makes sure everything goes smoothly. On my portrait sessions he works on “get-ting expressions” and makes sure everyone is looking at the camera,” she says.

One of the most important aspects that Danielle stress-es about family photos is making sure parents are in the picture with their children. She says, “The images that we take now have a huge impact on children when they look back at them later in life. They see that their parents loved them, held them, and took the time to be with them. They don’t look for their parents hair to be perfect, or what clothes they have on. They see the moments of a young family, many times these are details that the parents don’t remember, but will when they look at the photographs. I always tell them to get in there, get in the picture, it is your history.”

Danielle Zielinski Photography Studio is located at 281 Gillette Road in Spencerport, (585)352-8864. Photographs by appointment only. For more information visit www.daniellezielinski.com.

Frear’s “Christmas Fantasy Land”by Barbara Burke

The tradition of creating a “Christmas Fantasy Land,” in Frear’s Lawn & Garden Store was started in the mid 70’s by Clarence Frear. At that time it consisted of a few in-store Christmas displays of merchandise for sale. Today it has grown into something much, much more!

“We have everything for decorating your yard, your home and your holiday table, over 10,000 different items from around the world on display here,” owner Warren Frear said.

The entire 4,000 sq. ft. Frear’s store is transformed into a holiday fantasy land. Christmas displays are set up by em-ployees over the course of a few weeks during the month of October. You will find traditional holiday items and so much more… trees, lights, wreaths, poinsettias, outdoor and lawn ornaments, garlands, collectibles, Santas, tree or-naments, electrical supplies, everything for the home dur-ing the holiday season. They also carry many hard to find items including bubble lights, icicles and Nativity Scenes. Percent off sales on holiday items change weekly, and are on now through Christmas.

A visit to Frear’s at holiday time has become a tradition for many area families. Even after moving away from the area, visitors return year after year to relive childhood memories

and to “get into the holiday spirit.” Frear’s “Christmas Fan-tasy Land” is open now through the end of December.

Eric and Danielle are the third owners of the popular spot located at 512 Long Pond Road in Greece. Eric is the new owner, not new to The Retreat, he started working there 19 years ago. “I was the first employee hired by the original owner of The Retreat. I started part time and worked my way up the ranks,” Firenze said.

Getting to know all the jobs in the restau-rant business can be really valuable when you become the owners. “I met my wife at The Retreat in 2000, we were married in 2002 and from then on it was our goal to own, and operate a restaurant. We have worked at many different restaurants in the Rochester area with a combined total of 48 years in the business. It’s all we know,” he says.

This is how Eric and Danielle feel about owning The Re-treat, “We want to give to our community a place to go with a warm, and welcoming atmosphere. A place with great food, drinks and a casual, festive sports theme.” The loyal clientele at The Retreat range from young children to

senior citizens. The menu is Classic American Bar and Grill fare. “Our

menu is defined by our moderate prices, we use quality ingredients and a unique, simple preparation method. We offer everything from chicken wings to full course dinners,” Eric says.

The Retreat has a Friday night Fish Fry and the very pop-ular Saturday night Prime Rib Dinner. Customer comments on Prime Rib Dinner night include, “The smells coming from the kitchen are amazing,” and “The food here is de-

licious.” Eric says a customer favorite are the chicken wings, “Our wings are raved about. We serve them with Blue Cheese, Carrots, Celery and a choice from 11 different dipping sauces.” They also serve homemade soups made in house, with the freshest ingredients available and signature sandwiches in-cluding the “Grilled Reuben” and “Our Famous Turkey Rachael.”

The Retreat, 512 Long Pond Road, Greece, (585) 227-9100. Open Mon-day thru Friday, 4:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 2:00 a.m. For more information and to view the complete menu visit www.theretreatgreece.com.

Joe’s Homestyle Eateryby Barbara Burke

Joe Spallina, owner of Joe’s Homestyle Eatery, liter-ally grew up in the food service industry. It began for him back when his father and uncle started the original Italian Festival in 1975 in Greece. “Over the years I’ve had some great business opportunities including run-ning local businesses and as the Director of Operations for Red Osier Food Services. I never stayed away from the business for very long, and I grew to find my pas-sion is in both preparing food, and seeing people enjoy what I make,” Joe says.

Joe’s Eatery opened July 7, 2014. A family business Joe’s staff includes his son, Jake Spallina, daughter, Jennifer Spal-lina, Phillip Sogard and “an incredible amount of help and support from girlfriend, Michele Wrue.”

The slogan at Joe’s Eatery is “Always Fast & Fresh, Never Fast Food” and that is what they strive for everyday. Lo-cated at 502 Long Pond Road inside of North Greece Gro-cery, Joe’s Eatery offers food that is prepared in-house us-ing only the best local, fresh ingredients. They hand press their sausage each morning for the breakfast sandwiches. They slow oven roast the turkey and beef for their sand-wiches and also offer their meats and fresh sliced cheeses in their deli, by the pound, including new item, deep fried

turkey breast. Joe’s offers five varieties of subs, all made on rolls that

are freshly baked, everyday. Joe’s famous Greens and Beans and Chili are available daily for lunch along with one other variety of homemade soup, choices may include Creamy Chicken with Wild Rice, Italian Wedding, or Chick-en Noodle.

The menu also includes an assortment of breakfast sand-wiches, specialty sandwiches, plates, wings and Joe’s Fa-mous Shaved Steak Sub. “I let my customers decide what my specialty is, I prepare what they want to eat,” Joe says. One customer favorite is also Joe’s favorite…Joey’s Favorite Sandwich... Italian Sausage, Capicola, Provolone and Giar-diniera, a mixture of hot or mild peppers, olives, celery, ol-

ive oil and garlic.Joe’s Homestyle Eatery’s food is always fresh,

and always ready to grab and go. You can eat-in or take-out. They also have a full catering menu available. “I really want my customers to know that when I prepare food for catering everything is ready to serve, or ready to heat and serve, and I include instructions.”

Born and raised in Greece, Joe says, “I look for-ward to building my spot in the community that I love. Please stop in and say Hi.” Joe’s Homestyle Eatery is open Monday thru Friday 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. To view Joe’s Homestyle Eatery’s menus visit www.joeseatery.com.
