Toys on Patrol arrives at the Greece Police Departmentby Tami Raco

“Toys on Patrol” is a joint effort of the Pirate Toy Fund, Badge of Honor Association, and now the Greece Police Department, to provide toys to children involved with un-comfortable situations. The toys are given out to help form a positive law enforcement presence in the community. The Greece Police are one of the few agencies in the area to participate in this positive youth program.

In May, Gary the Happy Pirate, Executive Director of the Pirate Toy Fund, provided the Greece Police Department with over 600 brand new toys for the “Toys on Patrol” pro-gram. All of the toys are donated or fundraised throughout the year and are sealed in unopened packages. Sergeant Jared René oversees the program at the Greece Police De-partment and ensures each patrol car is stocked with the new toys. Sergeant René is very excited about implement-ing this program, he feels it’s a great way to reach out to the youth in the community and help establish positive connections.

Sergeant René would like each officer to be able to pro-vide a toy to any child they come across that is facing an uncomfortable situation in the hopes the officer can help make their day a little bit brighter.

Greece Police Sergeant Jared René oversees the recently imple-mented “Toys on Patrol” program. Provided photo.

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich

As we gear up for the Second Annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration, we would like to invite all residents and running enthusiasts to join us on the morning of July 4, 2015 for the 5K Freedom Run. Signup links can be found on our website as well as on the Yellow Jacket Racing website. Registration includes an event shirt, as well as a commemorative medal. The course will begin at the Public Works Department (647 Long Pond Rd.) and conclude at Town Hall Campus.

Children’s activities that include games and crafts run by Community & Senior Center staff will begin at Town Hall at 5:00p. Food trucks will be on hand throughout the night to ensure the crowd doesn’t go hungry. At 6:00pm The Boomers will take the stage to get the crowd riled up before a headlining set from nationally renowned touring artist John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band. Following this performance will be a fireworks display to close out the night.

I am also excited to announce a photo contest we are holding for our brand new website. The design of the new site is much cleaner and smoother than our current site, and I am sure residents will have a much more enjoyable online experience while browsing for information. This new layout is photo centric and we would like to use this opportunity to feature photographs taken by talented local artists. The only stipulation for entry into this contest is that the shots must be taken in the town. Winners will have their submission displayed prominently on our home page, with proper credit given as well. More details on how to enter will be released shortly.

If you frequent the Greece Community & Senior Center to take advantage of all the great programs they have to offer, I would like to encourage you to pick up a key-tag next time you visit. This tag hooks conveniently to your key ring and is much easier than fumbling around in your wallet looking for your card. These tags are free for current members to enjoy.

As always, if you have any town related issues or concerns please do not hesitate to contact my office at 225-2000.

by Barbara BurkeIt’s not as if she just started writing, Diane Rivoli has been

writing her stories since she was eight, putting pencil to paper in her attic bedroom. She started with short stories

about the things she knew about as an eight year old… horses and dogs and lollipops. Over the years as she matured, her stories were expressed through poetry, which became her preferred form of writing. In 2001 Diane’s letter “To The Future” was chosen to be sealed in Rochester, New York’s Time Capsule, to be

opened in the year 2134. She also has her short story, Zucchini Soup, as part of “Story Walk” an interactive artistic sidewalk installed on the grounds of The Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester.

Diane’s first Novel “License” is a collection of 60 short stories, each with the word “License” in the title, such as… License To Be Broken, Official License and License In A Whisper. There are twenty-one poems scattered throughout the 60 chapters adding to the depth and dimension of the novel. Some of the poems were written specifically for the book, some were previously written.

License is a series of stories that are inner-connected by characters and moments in time. “The book is really short stories, stories about life and relatives and emotions, all told from different points of view,” Diane says. The main character is 20 year old Dixie Andrews who is, “high on life, flying down the road towards change, adventure and independence.” There are seven major characters in the book, all with lives connected in some way to Dixie’s life.

Diane says the stories are sourced from an idea she had on a snowy drive south in February of 2013. To pass the time while moving at a snails pace in the car, she started making up songs about the words she saw on license plates. She decided that the songs really should be stories. She came up with a list of 106 words which she divided into categories and the stories were born. “I followed those words wherever they led me,” Diane says.

Diane also has a great love of cooking and preparing gourmet meals. “Food plays an important part in the book as in life. I had a reader tell me that every time she reads the book her stomach starts to growl,” Diane says. Other comments from readers about the delicious sounding food in the book has Diane thinking about a cookbook for her next project.

It took Diane 18 months to write License, she says, “I had the greatest time writing it.”

For more information about “License,” to read Diane’s time capsule letter “To The Future,” and for some favorite recipes visit www.dianerivoli.com.

MEET THE AUTHOR - On Saturday, July 11, 2015 from 2-4PM, Diane will be signing and reading stories from her novel “License” at Lift Bridge Book Shop, 45 Main Street, Downtown Brockport, New York.

On Saturday, July 18, 2015 from 1-2PM, Diane will be signing copies of her Novel “License” at Interior Expressions by Design, 1100 Long Pond Road in the Country Village Plaza.

It’s a Little League Lifeby Barbara Burke

For Diane Noga Greece Little League is a way of life. “I work on Little League business every day except Christmas Day, that’s the one day I take off during the year,” Diane says.

Diane and her husband Gene Noga have been involved with Greece Little League for 33 years, it started when they signed up their son Michael for T-Ball and decided to manage and coach his team. “We have volunteered doing many jobs over the 33 years, coaching, team management, field prepping, concessions, administration, pretty much everything,” Diane says. Currently they both work in administration Gene as the Little League Board President, Diane is responsible for many administrative duties including communications, managing the website, supervising and working at the concession stand and much more. Diane is County Certified to oversee the Concessions Operation.

All three of the Noga’s children participated in the Little League Program. In the early 1990’s when their daughter Paula said she was tired of playing “with the boys” and wanted to play softball, Diane approached the board and the result was the formation of the girls softball program. “Our daughter, who lives in Maryland, now coaches her daughters’ softball teams,” Diane says. That is true for past teammates of Gene and Diane’s kids, the Nogas are now meeting them again on the fields as the coaches of their own kid’s teams. “It’s a community organization but it is more like relatives getting together, former players are now the coaches, managers and volunteers. They want their kids to have the same good experience playing Little League that they had,” she says.

Greece Little League was chartered in 1954 as Barnard Little League, and in the 1950’s they became Greece Little League. In the early 1990’s Greece Little League started looking for property to establish a central location where all of their team’s games could be played. In 1994 they purchased a 37 acre parcel of land at 3641 Latta Road where they built a Little League Complex consisting of 7 ball fields, a T-Ball area, a Concession Stand and, as Diane says, “We have real bathrooms, that’s very important to people.” Currently the Complex has 7 acres which will be

developed into 7 additional ball fields. All proceeds from the Concession Stand and Greece

Little League fundraisers goes back into the Little League Complex. “We are the only Little League in the area that owns our playing fields and Complex. It is just like owning a home with a mortgage, taxes and upkeep. We have a wonderful group of volunteers that work to keep everything going, we are a family. Our volunteers are from all walks of life... parents, grandparents, council members,

Little League is a family thing. Diane Noga (left) with Lisa Walzer, John Walzer and Colin Anderson. John is Lisa’s father who coached, Lisa is a former player, and Colin, Lisa’s son is a current player.

Greece Little League owns their own Little League Complex on Latta Road and operate a concession stand at the complex.

business owners, bankers, police officers, even our Chief of Police, Chief Phelan is a coach. Everyone is here to help our kids grow and to teach them how to live and work together as a team,” Diane says.

The purpose of Greece Little League is to teach kids that through effort you can accomplish your goals, we do not discriminate against ability. “It is so rewarding to see the expressions on the player’s faces when they make

an out or a double play. From the first day on the field to the end of the season every kid improves, and learns about accomplishment and team effort. They celebrate the victories of everyone, and learn good sportsmanship and taking turns. It is such a joy to watch each year,” Diane says.

Honor Flight Holds Special Meaning to Greece Rotarians

Greece Rotarian Bill Selke was one of 55 veterans who participated in the May 31, 2015 Honor Flight Mission #41. Bill is a Korean War Era Veteran and very active in the

Greece Community, including Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. As part of the welcome home ceremony, veterans are

given lap robes, depicting their branch of service. This was especially meaningful for Greece Rotarians, who had sewn the lap robes presented, completed with a grant from the Rotary District 7120.

Town’s Tax Freeze Efficiency Plan Submitted

Supervisor Bill Reilich announced that the Town of Greece has submitted its Tax Efficiency Plan to the New York State Budget Office prior to the required June 1, 2015 filing date. This means that Greece residents will receive a tax credit this fall as provided under the State’s Proper-ty Tax Freeze Credit program. The Town of Greece was a strong contributor to the County’s Plan that was submitted by most of the towns in Monroe County. To be eligible for this credit, the property involved must be the resident’s primary residence and the homeowner cannot have a total household income greater than $500,000. The town’s plan needed to show efficiencies of a least 1% of the 2014 tax levy which totaled $37,395,502. This gave the town an ef-ficiency savings number of $373,955. These savings must

be sustained over the next three years. The efficiencies de-tailed in the towns plan total $9,398,000, which is more than eight times more than what was required. “I am very proud of the great effort that was made by all town de-partments to find efficiency’s throughout our organization. I am especially proud that we were able to reduce spend-ing from the 2014 to the 2015 budget by over $1,000,000 while still maintaining quality of life services!” Supervisor Reilich stated. The town’s efficiency’s came from a number of different initiatives. Starting in 2014, the town became a member of the Finger Lakes Municipal Health Insurance Trust which resulted in an estimated annual savings in our health Insurance costs of $1,900,000. Additionally, in de-veloping our 2015 budget a total of 10 Full-time and 9 Part-time positions were eliminated, the majority of these were from attrition and embracing efficiencies. These are just a few of the examples in reductions that can be attributed to the savings.

Make your pasta healthier this summer!by Tami Mungenast Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach

Summer in Western New York yields a delicious variety of healthy fruits and vegetables. Using these foods to re-place less nutritious foods can be a great way to improve your health and trim your waistline. This quick and easy idea can help you turn your Zucchini into Spaghetti!

This summer clean up your intake of empty carbs by making Zucchini into your favorite Spaghetti dish! Sem-olina and Wheat pastas typically runs approximately 50

net grams of carbs per cup compared to a cup of zucchini spaghetti at 4 net carbs per cup. Saving yourself from overdoing the carbs can re-ally help with weight management as well as reduce your risks to Dia-betes.

Here is how you can do it! First you can manually cut the zucchini into matchstick slices or use an inexpensive kitch-en gadget like the Veggetti Spiral Vegetable Slicer. This and similar items can be purchased for approximately $10 online or at area stores and makes the process so much easier! Take 6 zucchinis and cut or put them through the Veggettii. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Next add the cut zucchini and boil for 3 minutes. Drain well and top with your favorite sauce or pasta toppings. Now try your deli-cious healthy alternative to high carb pasta!

Mayers Lake Ontario Wineryby Barbara Burke

In 1960, David Bower, Sr. purchased the Mayer’s Cider Mill in Webster, New York where for many years he pressed apples for cider and grapes for local wine makers. In 1983, David Bower, Jr. purchased a farm at 1593 Hamlin Parma Townline Road, in Hilton, where apples, peaches, cher-ries and other fruits were grown. He has transformed the former apple orchards into 55 acres of vineyards growing mainly Vinifera, Native American and Hybrid varieties of grapes. The business includes a Winery, Brewery and Bis-tro.

When you go to a wine or beer tasting at Mayers Winery you are given an education. “Most people who order wines are familiar with California wines, we have some of the fin-est wines produced right here in our area,” Dave Bower says. The area between the Genesee and Niagara rivers has just the right conditions to grow grapes, hops and stone fruits. “This entire area was all once under water, and we get protection from the lake, it makes for perfect growing conditions. By the end of the year the Niagara Trail will have 24 wineries,” Dave says.

The magic in the wines, beers and apple ciders at Mayers Lake Ontario Winery happens through a careful combina-tion of fruits, the barrels in which they are brewed (May-ers uses American, French and Hungarian barrels) and the experience and knowledge that the brewer brings to the process. “I enjoy the blending of flavors to produce our wines, beers and ciders for our customers and according to specific requests,” Dave says.

The Bistro Restaurant offers a delicious menu of specialty pizzas like Apple Pizza, Pear Pizza, Smokey Cheesy Chicken Pizza, Bruschetta Pizza, BLT Pizza and Spicy Meatball Pizza. Paninis including Chicken Swiss, Apple Cheddar and Por-tabella. They have specially Salads, Soups, Appetizers and much more. There are nightly specials, Wednesday is Pizza & Wine Night and Thursday is “All You Can Eat” Spaghetti with Garlic Bread. They also have monthly specialty food pairings with wine and beer.

The Winery product lines include Lake Ontario Wines, Lake Ridge Wines, Pirate’s Lagoon Wines, Craft Belgium Style beers, Hard Cider and more. The Pirate’s Lagoon line of wines is very popular and has a Pirate Crew, who are members of a group who enjoy Pirate’s Lagoon wines and are kept up to date on “all things Pirate” with their own Facebook Page - Pirates Lagoon.

Mayer’s Lake Ontario Winery hosts festivals at the Win-ery. Upcoming events include Blackberry Blues, July 18th & 19th, and Blueberry Bluegrass on August 22nd & 23rd and

in September a Reggae Festival with music and Jamaican inspired food.

They also host private events, small weddings, showers, and gatherings including anniversary and birthday parties, or any private celebration. Check their online Events Cal-endar or contact Events Manager Lorraine Schiffhauer at 585-671-1979 or email [email protected] to plan and book your event.

Mayers Lake Ontario Winery also offers Home Hobby Kits. Kits available include Brewology, Wine Making, BBQ and Hot Sauce Making Kits, Soda Making, Cheese and Mustard Making Kits, Lollipops Making and more. They also carry finely crafted vinegar, oils, cheese, fudge, maple syrup, honey and honey products in their store.

Classes in Mozzarella Cheese making, Wine making, Ci-der making and Beer making are also hosted at the Win-ery.

Artists Showcase Artistic Flair at Community & Senior Center

In an effort to create a more aesthetic environment in the Community & Senior Center, Supervisor Reilich invited students from Odyssey Academy to create murals and hang paintings. The murals may be found on the walking track, while other works may be found throughout the halls of the center. Students Jake Rivera, Jess Welter, Hannah Surdi, Amanda Martin, Tyler Dorr, Maiya Beltran, Megan O’Hara, and Ashley Chan all contributed works to this project.

“As I found myself utilizing the walking track, I noticed that the walls were completely bare and dull,” said Supervisor Reilich. “Upon discussing this with Deputy Supervisor Marini and Parks and Recreation Director Peter O’Brien, we decided to reach out to students in Greece to have them come in and brighten the place up and they have done a remarkable job.”

Canine Central, a new dog grooming and training salon, opened March 4, 2015, in Greece. The salon is located at 506 Long Pond Road, in the Carriage Stop Plaza, just in front of Golden Ponds. Canine Central offers something a little different: a salon for dogs with a professional look and atmosphere, grooming is right up front and visible, clients – both 2-legged and 4, are always treated well and safety is always the #1 priority. Canine Central strives to provide the best, safest, and least harmful environment and products for clients by using natural products, which don’t contain harsh or synthetic ingredients, as much as is possible, on their grooming clients and in the salon. MaryAnn Aquilino, owner, states “If a product doesn’t list their ingredients, I don’t use it; and I research every product and their ingre-dients to ensure they’re as safe as is possible.”

Aquilino believes your dog should have a safe, comfort-able, enjoyable, stress-free experience when they’re being groomed. She is a Certified Professional Groomer, gradu-ated from the Rochester Institute of Dog Grooming. “I truly love what I do and always treat your pet as though they were my own, with lots of hugs and kisses, gentle handling, great service you and your dog can trust, reasonable pric-es, and unique bows/flowers and bandanas to finish their look. Your dog will also get a dog toy and/or bag of natu-ral healthy treats; I give these to all new clients, and all of my clients continue to get them for the various holidays throughout the year,” says Aquilino. “My goal is to ensure your pet has a great grooming experience, with a finished result you both will love.”

Aquilino also offers some special discounts. “As a sign of my thanks and appreciation for the many sacrifices they make and the hard job they do, Canine Central is pleased to offer a discount to current and former members of the military, police, fire, 1st responders, and SAR”.

According to Aquilino, “While the end result is a great looking dog groom, dog grooming isn’t a matter of look-ing good, it’s a matter of your dog’s health, comfort, well-being, and an important part of caring for our dogs. Each grooming at Canine Central includes your dog’s bath, dry-

ing, hairstyle/clip, nails, and ear care. All grooms include whatever products are necessary for a great result - con-ditioner, de-shed, hypo allergenic, blueberry facial, etc. - at no extra cost. Aquilino table dries all dogs as it gives a better finish to the groom, and for dogs who don’t tolerate table drying well, she uses crates fully open on all sides with fans. “Heated cage dryers were banned in NY State in 2012” says Aquilino. “And cool air dryers seem too cold to me to have blowing on a wet dog. While most dogs are fine for table drying, there are a few who don’t like it, and I don’t believe in stressing a dog just to get the groom done. Fans blow room temperature air, are safer than heated dry-ers, and more comfortable for the dogs than cool dryers.”

Aquilino also does Creative Grooming for a small fee, which includes adding bling, beads and feather extensions, and temporary, pet safe color to your dogs. Canine Cen-tral is also one of very few salons that offer Asian Fusion Style grooming, a popular new genre in dog grooming that mixes conventional/traditional grooming with Japanese styling, and was developed by Pammie Carmichael-Hogg in the UK. Canine Central grooms dogs of all sizes and breeds, and also grooms cats. The salon has day, weekend, and evening appointments. Aquilino says, “To book an appointment, please call 585-305-1017, for a grooming that you and your pet will love.”

National Night Out at Greece Town Hall Campus

Supervisor Bill Reilich is bringing the Annual “National Night Out” event to Greece Town Hall on Tuesday, August 4, 2015. The event will run from 5:30pm until 7:30pm.

National Night Out is a community event aimed at strengthening the relationship between residents and law enforcement officials.

The program for the night will include food trucks, live safety demonstrations, a meet and greet with the Greece Police Department, and raffle prizes.

Historically, many neighborhood associations in Greece hold neighborhood walkthroughs on National Night Out. The Town would like to invite these groups to provide details of any walkthrough so that they can be advertised on the website.

“Having an open dialogue between residents and law enforcement officials is essential” said Supervisor Reilich in a statement. “This event will help lead to an increased awareness to the different methods folks can utilize to ensure our community is kept safe.”
