presented bySusan Speer, RD

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich

Here at Town Hall we are preparing for a very busy summer filled with returning events and new ones as well, we even have a few surprises along the way. With our new pavilion finally complete and ready for use, we are excited to host events such as Supervisor Reilich’s Summer Concerts at the Hall, the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration, and many more. The new Pickleball courts are now in full swing and getting plenty of usage with leagues and exhibition games. Don’t forget to mark your calendars, I Dig This Town will be returning on August 15, 2015.

The Town of Greece, in conjunction with the Town of Greece Youth Board, hosted the first annual Jerry J. Helfer Memorial Scholarship Food Truck Rodeo. Local favorites Macarollin, Java’s, Papa Gigs, Kona Ice, Lugias, Brunch Box, Smoothies Plus, Chef’s Catering, J & S Fried Dough, and Dave’s Fine Foods were on hand to serve up dinner and dessert. Crowds from throughout Greece and Monroe County were in attendance, and the weather could not have been more perfect.

The money that was raised from this event will help kick-start funding for the Jerry J. Helfer Youth Engagement Award Scholarship. Earlier this year, the Town announced that this scholarship would be awarded to a student that regularly upholds exemplary moral values, devotes time and energy into helping serve the Greece community, and consistently displays outstanding leadership skills. More details on how to apply for this scholarship will be available soon on the Town of Greece website.

As you may have seen on a recent visit to Town Hall, our Splash Pad project is nearing completion and will be open to the public very soon. A full rendering of the plan is available in the lobby of the Community and Senior Center. We will be keeping with the water theme as we welcome Slide the City to the Town on July 18, 2015. This event will bring a 1,000 foot water slide to Greece and we cannot be more excited! We hope you will join us in celebrating the peak of summer with this community event.

As always, should you ever have a Town related issue, please feel free to contact my office at 225-2000 or visit our website at greeceny.gov.

In light of your receipt of the Greece Police Lifesaving Award, Officer of the Month October, Officer of the Month, November and the service that you provide every day to the citizens of Greece with Integrity and Professionalism you are awarded the Greece Police Departments Officer of the Year Award. We are all very proud of you, and we thank you for your service.”

2014 CIVILIAN OF THE YEAR - Beverly SharkeyProclamation

Why eating less is not always the answerby Tami Mungenast CPT, CNWC

The human body is built like a high per-formance race car preferring to be fueled by the high-est quality nutrients. The body is made up of many organ systems responsible for life to include breathing, circulating blood, brain function and waste removal. To do these jobs effec-tively the body requires adequate caloric nutrients.

Unfortunately when we set out to lose weight many peo-ple lose sight of the performance and function of the body as a whole and focus only on making that number on the scale go down. Often we become short sited and gravitate towards low calorie and very restrictive diets. These short-lived diets become attractive because they seemingly can provide quick results on the scale. What is important to understand is that often these low calorie/low nutrient di-ets cause more damage to the body than good.

Some side affects could be • Binge eating when hungry• Unhealthy fixation on food • Distractibility• Increased Cortisol production• Impaired cognitive function• Suppressed thyroid function• Decreased energy• Future weight gain The alternative way to lose weight is by allowing for a

moderate calorie deficit but by not being overly restric-tive with valuable nutrients. Eating small frequent healthy meals that combine macronutrients is optimum to help achieve a gradual sustainable weight loss. On average, a woman should not lose more than 1-2 lbs. per week and man 3-4 lbs. per week.

The origin of the word “Diet” is from the 13th century and comes from the Greek word diaita meaning “manner of living”. A diet should not be short term. If your goal is wellness, a diet should be a lifestyle of healthy balanced choices. It is important to make gradual modifications to your diet than you can adapt to as a lifestyle versus ex-treme dieting that you will struggle to maintain and poten-tially cause damage to the body.

For help with building your optimum diet visit a Nutri-tionist.

Awards Program Honors Local Hockey Players for Dedication, Hard Work and Commitment to ExcellenceTyler Putnam Foundation Supports Youth Hockey Dreams

Tyler Putnam’s dream was to play for his high school hockey team, junior hockey, Division I hockey and ultimately professional hockey. Tyler was able to realize two of those dreams, having played for the Irondequoit Eagles as an eighth and ninth grader and then with Maksymum Junior team here in Rochester. At the conclusion of his first Junior season, Tyler was well on his way to realizing his next dream, as he was of-fered roster spots on five Junior A teams from Rochester, MN to San Diego, CA.

But in July of 2011, Tyler’s hockey dreams ended tragi-cally when he died of an illness called meningococcemia, an infection that affects the bloodstream.

Tyler was known for his high energy, incredible work ethic and desire to achieve his goals. He has been memorialized by a banner hanging above the ice at Lakeshore Hockey Arena, and now by an awards program and foundation that both bear his name. The Tyler Putnam Foundation, established in 2011, seeks to financially support young athletes who want to play league hockey, but who may have funding challenges.

In March, the 2nd annual NewEdge Hockey 2015 Tyler Put-nam Awards recognized 19 hockey players from area hockey organizations, ranging in ages from 12 -18. All had one thing in common with Tyler: an uncommon dedication to the sport. Receiving trophies bearing a gold hard hat, the awards went to players who have demonstrated dedication, hard work and a commitment to excellence in hockey.

New this year to the awards program, the first Josh Opladen Goaltender Award was also handed out. Joshua was known as one of those people in life that affect others in an extremely positive way. He was a promising young man, full of enthu-siasm, fun, always smiling and extremely competitive and caring. Those who knew Josh as a hockey player understood his passion for the sport and his commitment to being the best he could be. Nestled in that drive was an understanding of the important things in life: faith, family, friendships and team work. He shared his passion for the sport and the posi-tion he played with young goalies, and always worked hard for his hockey team, his teammates, friends and family. Josh’s passion not only for hockey, but for life, will always be remembered, and memorialized with an annual award in his honor.

Jennifer Johnson, Anchor/Reporter for ABC’s Channel 13 was the 2015 Tyler Putnam Awards emcee. Rory Fitzpatrick, accomplished former AHL & NHL professional hockey player announced the award winners.2015 Tyler Putnam Youth Hockey Award winners:

Greece Arcadia studentsget a lesson on drunk drivingGreece Police participated in the “Every 15 Minutes” program that simulates losing a fellow student to a DWI crash.by Tami Raco

The number one cause of death in teens is a Motor Vehicle accident. DWI, distracted driving, aggressive driving, inexperience and no seat belt, usually causes these fatal accidents. The Greece Police Department in conjunction with the North Greece Fire Department and Greece Volunteer Ambulance co-hosted a program to help educate Arcadia Juniors and Seniors about these dangers. The program “Every 15 Minutes” offers a real-life experience without the real-life risks. This emotionally charged program is an event designed to dramatically instill upon the students the potentially dangerous consequences of drinking alcohol and texting while driving. This powerful program will challenge students to think about drinking, texting while driving, personal safety, and the responsibility of making mature decisions when lives are involved.

The Greece Police Department works actively to crack down on DWI driving. They received two grants to help with DWI enforcement. The County grant, “Stop DWI Enhancement” and the NYS grant, “STOP DWI Crackdown” help provide extra funds to the Greece Police Department to allocate additional patrolmen hours for DWI enforcement in the community. The additional

patrol is used primarily during peak DWI times such as holidays and Superbowl. In addition, the funding helps provide advanced training and education to the Officers. The grants also help fund the purchase of new technology in DWI equipment such as Alco-Sensors and Radar Units.

Aside from the increased ability to patrol and enforce DWI activity, the Greece Police also feel

strongly about educating the high risk young drivers especially during critical times of the year. The “Every 15 Minutes” program took place at Greece Arcadia on April 30, 2015 and a similar program will also be held at the end of May at Greece Olympia High School.

The program reenacts a fatal motor vehicle accident on the night of the prom. The reality-based reenactment goes beyond the crash when the following day at school the death of a classmate is portrayed and felt among the students and faculty. This provides a very emotional and raw experience for the students to experience with the hopes of creating a lasting impact on them to make good choices at the upcoming prom events and graduation.

The reenactment includes the harsh reality of a body bag being loaded into a waiting ambulance.

Giuliana Bozza shows the results of texting and driving.

Student participant Isaiah Menetta, be-ing hand cuffed after suspicion of DWI.

BUSINESS BRIEFSara’s In Springtime

by Barbara BurkeSpring garden planting season is extra special at Sara’s

Garden & Nursery, 389 East Avenue, Brockport.Owners Kathy and Steven Kepler began Sara’s in 1977

selling homegrown vegetable and garden plants and flowers from a farm wagon. Still a family owned business, over the years Sara’s Garden & Nursery has grown, they now have a 20,000 sq. ft. greenhouse and continue to grow all their own annuals, vegetable plants and hanging baskets.

Sara’s offers over 1,500 varieties of perennials, most of their perennial varieties are rare and unique to this area. “I have always loved plants. When we started out in the late 1970’s there were very few local greenhouses that offered a selection of speciality perennials. I set out to find the most unique and unusual varieties to sell.” Kathy Kepler says. Sara’s has perennials that thrive in a variety of garden conditions…sun, shade, alpine and vining varieties. They have over 200 varieties of Hostas and 100 varieties of Clematis plants.

In addition to perennials, Sara’s has a huge selection of vegetable plants, annuals, conifers, ferns, ground cover, grasses, herbs, shrubs, shade trees, fruit trees and interior plants.

For the past 20 years Sara’s has been a source for water gardens and pond needs. They carry plants, fish and construction supplies and

all the products necessary to maintain ponds and water gardens. Sara’s has a 20 year old Lotus at their main display pond that is spectacular sight to see when in full flower.

Other products include pottery, garden ornaments, fairy gardens, and organic and chemical gardening supplies. They

offer container planting services, and mulch and soil delivery.

A stroll through their display gardens provides a source for peaceful meditation and artistic inspiration.

Sara’s Garden & Nursery has hosted many weddings through the years in their gardens. A main attraction is the Stone Wall Folly. In the fall of each year, Sara’s hosts a wall building class instructed by John Shaw-Rimmington from Canada, originally from England, and Norman Haddow from Scotland. Over the course of the class ten students learn the craft of stone wall building. The Stone Wall Folly at Sara’s is an ongoing project that replicates the Garden Follies style popular in 18th Century

English and French landscaping gardens. In Victorian times garden follies featured Roman and Asian temples, Egyptian Pyramids, castles, even abbeys and rustic cottages in ruin. Sara’s Stone Wall Folly will evolve and progress over future years into a castle in ruin. The gardens around the folly provide the perfect setting for a wedding ceremony, among the gardens and castle ruins.

Visit Sara’s Garden & Nursery Monday thru Saturday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

GreeceNewsNY.com - Retail Business of the Month

Giuseppe’sby Grace Griffee

On a Saturday morning, people are already streaming in the bakery/take-out side of Giuseppe’s restaurant in Gates. Tucked in a corner of FWS Plaza at 40 Spencerport Road, you would think location would be a hindrance to the success of this family-owned business, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Back in 1927, the seed for the business was planted by Joseph (Giuseppe) Petrillo, grandfather of Joe Chinappi, current owner. The first location at Verona and State Streets moved to Jay Street a few years later and was run by Petrillo, a native of Naples, Italy, and his siblings – Theresa, Serafina (Chinappi’s mother), Rose, Thomas and Sam. The family moved the business to Gates in 1970.

“When I took over the business in 1991, I hoped that my sons would follow and want to be part of it,” said Chinappi. His wish came true. While his oldest son, Robert, went on to become a teacher, Marciano “Marcy” and Joe Jr., along with nephew, Steve, are integral to the current operation. Marcy is in charge of the kitchen and daily operations, Joe Jr. is the baker and pastry chef, and Steve is a chef. Chinappi works the night shift preparing items like sauces, greens and tripe ahead of time.

The family moved the business to its current location in 2002. “We’ve expanded a lot over the years, but we always kept my grandfather’s bread,” said Chinappi. The bakery offers regular, French, twist and round breads, plus a variety of rolls, Italian-style croutons and bread crumbs. Other family recipes for sauces, meatballs and hot sauce have been mainstays on the restaurant menu. “It’s all by hands on. None of us went to culinary school,” said Chinappi. “If you like what you’re doing, you learn it and do it.”

Over the years, the waiting times got longer in the restaurant and the family decided to expand to the next retail unit at 48 Spencerport Road to add seating. Chinappi, Marciano “Marcy” Chinappi and his father, Joe, in the kitchen at Giuseppe’s, with some of the pizzas that

have helped make the business so famous. Photo by G. Griffee.

who has 25 years in the construction business, oversaw all of the renovations. “We started the work on January 1, 2014 and had our grand reopening on June 1, 2014. We were able to stay open for all but three of those weeks,” said Chinappi.

The expansion provided an extra 2,500 square feet bringing the total retail space to 5,300 square feet. The bakery/take-out area was relocated to the new space, doubling the seating capacity in the dining room and providing space for two private dining rooms, one that seats 30 and another that seats 15-18. “We hold a lot of showers and corporate events in those rooms and use it as our overflow seating,” said Chinappi. The whole area received new flooring, paint and window treatments, and bistro-style seating was added to the bakery/take-out area.

In addition to the restaurant, take-out and bakery, which are open seven days a week, Giuseppe’s does a huge catering business. All of this is accomplished with a staff of only 25 people. “The people that we have are dedicated to Giuseppe’s,” said Chinappi.

Giuseppe’s is located at 40 Spencerport Road in the FWS Plaza. The restaurant opens at 11 a.m. daily. The bakery/take-out area is open Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. – 10 p.m.; and Sunday, 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. For more information, call 429-6540/426-3397.

Help To Light Up AthenaA group of parents, staff and students at Greece Athena Middle

School and High School are working to raise funds to purchase a digital sign for the Athena Campus.

Since its launch in 2012, the Light Up Athena project has raised nearly $15,000 towards its goal of $30,000 through a variety of school-based fundraising activities. Those activities include donations and pledges from: Box Tops for Education, bottle and can returns, the middle and high school music and theatre programs, a BBQ, the sports boosters, as well as free will donations from parents, staff and friends of the Athena community.

Light Up Athena will be one of the groups participating in Athena’s Spring Fling/Food Truck Rodeo on Friday evening, June 19, 2015 on the Athena Campus. In addition to hosting carnival-like activities such as a dunk tank and duck pond, Light Up Athena will also be collecting bottles and cans during the event.

Start saving your returnable bottles and cans now and plan to bring them to Athena from 4 PM to 8 PM. Look for the Ridge Nickelback Bottle & Can Return trailer set up on site. For every large trash bag full of bottles or cans dropped off, participants will receive an entry into a drawing for a gift card.

Participants are also invited to come to the Light Up Athena booth at the event to learn more about the project, make a cash donation, or try their hands at dunking an Athena community member. Children can also try winning a prize at the duck pond.

For more information about the Light Up Athena project, visit www.lightupathena.org.
