March 25, 2018

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Our bulletin publisher frequently has early deadlines. Consequently, submission of content for printing is not always within our control. We will do our best to get all requests satisfied as soon as possible. Parish-ioners should also be aware offertory reporting is typically now printed on the third weekend of the month. Counting and bookkeeping of weekend collections, coupled with the frequent early deadlines, have dictated this

monthly reporting process. For questions concerning parish income and expenses, any member of Good Shepherd Parish is welcome to contact David Gadbois of our parish finance office. (2) This weekend, as we celebrate Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, we are making use of the short form of the entrance and of the Liturgy of the Word, omitting the 1st reading, responsorial psalm, and 2nd reading. We are using these optional forms in consideration of our many elderly parishioners, and because of parking challenges when multiple Masses are scheduled at the same location. (3) I urge all parishioners to participate as fully as possible in the liturgies of Holy Week, espe-cially those of the Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil). In observing these holy days, we join with believers all over the world who celebrate God’s merciful love as revealed in the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. During the week ahead, raise up in prayer those who are beginning their last days of preparation for the sacraments of initiation they will receive on the Easter Vigil. Those of us who have had close contact with them can see wonderful things happening in their lives and how the Lord continues to tug at the hearts of people in our community in often surpris-ing ways! (4) As we have done for several years, a single parish-wide celebration of the Holy Thursday and Good Friday ceremonies (March 29-30) will begin at 7:00 pm at St. Joseph Church. On Thursday evening (or at other Masses), Rice Bowls can be placed in baskets marked “Rice Bowls” located at entrances of all churches; they should not be placed in the collection basket. The Easter Vigil will begin Saturday, March 31, at 7:45 pm, which is the earliest we can begin this nighttime ceremony in Maine this year. Again this year, the Easter Vigil will be celebrated in two locations. At St. Joseph Church, it will include those receiving Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. At Most Holy Trinity Church, these sacraments of initiation will not be included. No other Masses are permitted that evening. On Easter Sunday, in addition to the usual schedule, we are adding a 9:30 am Mass at St. Joseph and an 11:00 am Mass at St. Philip. (5) A possible “Joy in Action” for this week based on Pope Francis’ apostolic exhorta-tion on the joy of the family, Amorus Laetitiae: Reach out to someone who is lonely or has been away from the Church and invite them to accompany you to Holy Week Masses and services. (6) A blast from the past on prayer: “Of old, prayer was able to rescue from fire and beasts and hunger, even before it received its perfection from Christ… In the past prayer was able to bring down punishment, rout armies, withhold the blessing of rain. Now, however, the prayer of the just turns aside the whole anger of God, keeps vigil for its enemies, pleads for persecutors… Its only art is to call back the souls of the dead from the very journey of death, to give strength to the weak, to heal the sick, to exorcise the possessed, to open prison cells, to free the innocent from their chains. Prayer cleanses from sin, drives away temptations, stamps out persecutions, comforts the fainthearted, gives new strength to the courageous, brings travelers safely home, calms the waves, confounds robbers, feeds the poor, overrules the rich, lifts up the fallen, supports those who are falling, sustains those who stand firm” (From the treatise On Prayer by Tertullian, born about 160 A.D.). (7) Thank You of the Week: To those who prepared, served and enjoyed the Lenten haddock suppers that so greatly benefit St. James School. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 9 - Msgr. Tonne: Two men were seated in a bus. One of them noticed that his friend had his eyes closed. “What’s the matter, Bill?” he asked, “Feeling ill?” “No, I’m all right,” answered Bill. “It’s just that I hate to see all these ladies standing.” -Quote

Holy Week - 2018 The Sacred Triduum

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of Holy Week: Masses will be celebrated at the usual times and locations. Funeral Masses are not permitted on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. However, the funeral liturgy outside of Mass may be used on those days and celebrated in church.

Holy Communion for the Sick: On Holy Thursday and Good Friday, Holy Communion may be given to the faithful who attend the liturgies on those days, and may be brought to the sick after the evening liturgies. Before the Easter Vigil Masses on Holy Saturday, Communion may be given only to the dying.

Holy Thursday: Sacred oils blessed by Bishop Robert Deeley at Tuesday’s Cathedral Chrism Mass will be publicly received in the parish during the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper at St. Joseph Church at 7:00 pm (Rice Bowls will be collected at this Mass; please put them in the special boxes placed near church entrances for that purpose – not in the collection basket). Afterwards, the Eucharist will be in repose downstairs, in Ste Anne Chapel where adoration will continue until 10:00 pm when a Tenebrae service will be led by parishioners.

Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence from meat. All Catholics aged 14 and older are bound by the law of abstinence from meat. Catholics aged 18 and older until their 59th birthday are bound by the law of fast. At 3:00 pm, the Stations of the Cross will be celebrated at all of our four church locations but in French at Saint Joseph Church. The Celebration of the Lord’s Passion will be at St. Joseph Church at 7:00 pm, including the Liturgy of the Word, the Adoration of the Holy Cross, and Holy Communion.

Holy Saturday: Several priests will be available 3:00-4:00 pm (& longer if necessary) at Most Holy Trinity Church for individual confessions on Holy Saturday afternoon. There are no 4:00/4:30 pm Masses on this day.

The Easter Vigil is the only Mass permitted on the evening before Easter Sunday; it may be celebrated only after nightfall -- 7:45 pm this year. The celebra-tion at St. Joseph Church is scheduled to include the sacraments of initiation. The Easter Vigil will also be celebrated (without the sacraments of initiation) at Most Holy Trinity Church at 7:45 pm.

Easter Sunday: Nine Masses are scheduled in Good Shepherd Parish on Easter Sunday, including addi-tional Masses at St. Philip & St. Joseph. Check the schedule of Mass intentions for times and locations.

Easter Communion: In the USA, the obligation to receive Holy Communion at least once a year may be satisfied from the first Sunday of Lent to Trinity Sunday (May 27). For a just cause, this “Easter Duty” may be fulfilled at some other time of the year.

Confessions on Saturdays (or by appointment): 3:00 pm at Most Holy Trinity, St. Joseph and St. Margaret

3:30 pm at St. Philip

(at St. Joseph, the Stations will be in French.) Prayer as we are ending our LENTEN JOURNEY: God of the journey, You offered us the example of the Good Samaritan, who stops to heed the cries of a person in need. As we end our Lenten journey, may we continue to walk with our brothers & sisters around the world who are hungry, with

those who must flee their homes because of war or lack of opportunity, and with all who need our comfort & compassion. We pray that these, our Lenten sacrifices, may be an offering of solidarity & a promise of ongoing

encounter with our one human family. As good stewards of your many gifts, may we always remember to love our neighbors as ourselves.

And whenever we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty or welcome the stranger, may we remember that we are encountering the

Risen Christ. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

TENEBRAE is a Latin word meaning darkness. The service includes singing of the Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah, along with vari-ous psalms and prayers. It further includes an experience of the dark-ness and confusion symbolizing the temporary triumph of the Prince of

Darkness over the Light of the World, and a loud noise at the service’s conclusion, suggesting the earthquake described in the

Passion Narratives. The single candle left burning is the symbol and promise of Christ’s triumph over death and darkness.

This year’s Tenebrae service will take place in Ste. Anne Chapel at 10:00 pm, on Holy Thursday evening, March 29th. Please join us.

Message from the Culture of Life: In taking on human flesh in the virginal womb of Mary of Nazareth, the Word of

God made flesh through His paschal mystery, has restored humanity to friendship with God, and given the gift of human life an inestimable

value that no one, no government, no legislature, no judicial court can rightfully & justly take away. This is why abortion is so against

God’s will. God wants us to live a life of “love”, not abuse. We need to respect and cherish both the mother and the unborn child.
