GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH
Message from Monsignor René Mathieu
(1) Second Collection - Missionary Cooperation Plan: This week-
end, a missionary is speaking at St. Joseph, St. Philip & St. Brendan
churches as part of the annual commitment of the diocese toward di-
rect support of mission churches and ministries. Sr. Lisa Valentini is
visiting us on behalf of the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred
Heart of Jesus, and will share some of her experiences in mission over
the past 30 years. If you want your donation recorded for tax purposes, place your
gift in any blank envelope and mark your envelope number. Make checks out to
Good Shepherd Parish. Another missionary group visited our other church locations
in July. (2) This Sunday afternoon at Saint Margaret in Old Orchard Beach, the
Knights of Columbus are sponsoring an appreciation ceremony and barbecue for
(youth) altar servers. I am especially proud of our servers who must be very flexible
when dealing with a variety of priests and locations. They truly are terrific! (3) Re-
cently, we received the final contribution of $25,000 toward a total pledge of
$100,000 from the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec to provide financial assis-
tance for students attending St. James Catholic School. Received over four years,
these funds have a made a big difference in our ability to help families in need. I am
deeply grateful to the General Superior, Sr. Theresa Rounds, SCIM -- a Biddeford
native -- and to the General Council for this generous gift. (4) The contract between
the Heralds of Good News and the Bishop of Portland permits Father Antonydass,
HGN to obtain a second collection at one of our churches each year to support the
good works of their society. This year, the appeal will take place next weekend, Au-
gust 23/24 at St. Joseph Church only. Please make checks out to Good Shepherd
Parish. If you want your contribution to be recorded for tax purposes, use an enve-
lope and mark your offertory number on the envelope. (5) Faith formation pro-
grams will resume soon. Children’s ministry will begin on September 14, and youth
ministry (grades 6-12) will kick-off on September 21. Online registration for both is
now available. We are currently seeking catechists for our children and youth minis-
tries. (6) We are sad to say goodbye to our current Assistant Director of Faith For-
mation, Michael Drahos and his young family. Mike has accepted a position as the
Coordinator of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Office of Lifelong Faith
Formation and Parish Support in the Archdiocese of Boston, beginning in Septem-
ber. Mike has been a wonderful addition to our Faith Formation team and we are
thankful for his many gifts used within parish ministry over the last 2 years, in par-
ticular, with our youth. May God bless you in your new endeavors as you continue to
serve the Church in Massachusetts. (7) A few weeks ago, someone asked me why
people often say “bless you” after someone sneezes. I hadn’t a clue so I went online
and found a brief explanation. The phrase is attributed to Pope Gregory the Great
(540-604) who is said to have spoken “God bless you” during a bubonic plague epi-
demic in the 6th century, sneezing being one of the symptoms of the plague. Different
languages and cultures have similar or other expressions (such as “gesundheit,”
meaning “health” in German), but they seem to be related to the fact that a sneeze
sometimes signals the onset of a cold or allergy. So “bless you” is a courteous way of
wishing someone good health. (8) Thank You of the Week: To all volunteers who
assisted with selling raffle tickets for the Seafood Raffle. Thank you!
Jokes Priests Can Tell, Volume 4 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne: After Francis Scott Key
finished writing the “Star-Spangled Banner,” his wife said, “That’s very nice, Fran-
cis, but now why don’t you write a song that people can sing sitting down.”

A special message for summer visitors:
Welcome to Good Shepherd Parish, which con-
sists of 4 churches: Most Holy Trinity in Saco,
Saint Joseph in Biddeford, St. Margaret in Old
Orchard Beach and St. Philip in Lyman. We also
have two summer chapels, St. Brendan in
Biddeford Pool and St. Luke in Old Orchard
Beach. You may have noticed that St. Luke is not
open this summer because it is in need of a new
roof and ventilation system. Our parish owns 15
properties, 6 of which are listed for sale at this
time. All our properties are in need of improve-
ments aimed at increasing the useful life of a
building or adding to its value. These projects
result in considerable financial stress for the
parish. In particular, the cost of repairing the roof
and ventilation system in St. Luke is about $50-
60,000. Therefore, we have begun a capital fund
campaign to help pay for repairing the roof and
ventilation system. If you enjoy worshiping at St.
Luke in the summer months and would like to
help us raise funds for this purpose, you may send
a check to the parish office or go to the parish
website at www.GoodShepherdParish.us and
click “Online Giving,” where you will find a
donation opportunity for St. Luke Chapel; you
may also contact our finance coordinator, David
Gadbois, at the parish office. Thank you for your
consideration. Although our buildings are of great
concern, even greater is our mission of bringing
the gospel of Christ to our parishioners and to all
around us. There is good news in that regard.
From a global perspective, we have Pope Francis
admired throughout the world. The appointment
of Bishop Robert Deeley as the new Bishop of
Portland in February has been an exciting and
positive experience. In early April, a parish mis-
sion led by Fr. Larry Richards (well known on
Catholic Radio) attracted over 1100 people to
attend each of the four evenings. The mission had
a strong spiritual impact on those who attended
and continues to influence the lives of many
parishioners. I find in these combined experiences
signs of faith and hope for the Catholic Church in
Maine and for our parish in particular. We appre-
ciate the prayerful support of Catholics who visit
us from elsewhere; your presence enlivens us
during the summer months. May you have an
enjoyable, restful & peaceful vacation in Maine!
