Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) We resumed our middle school and high school faith formation programs last Sunday evening with the annual kick-off. I noticed a sig-nificant increase in the number of middle school students & I commend parents for that. High school students were less numerous so I appeal to parents and students to commit. As I watched the teens arriving, I recalled my own arrival in the community twelve years ago this month when I was assigned to Notre Dame Church. Some of these teens were

not even born then and many were babies in 2004; I am somewhat mystified how they have grown and developed before my very eyes! (2) Care of the Sick and Dying: Anointing the Sick, Priest on Call, & SMHC Chaplain: If you know you will be going to the hospital for surgery or other reason, I urge you to ask a priest to administer the Sacrament of the Sick before or after any Mass rather than wait until the last moment when no priest may be immediately available. This is something every priest is happy to do; your family and friends are welcome to join you so they can pray for you, too. It only takes a few minutes; just ask! For serious, unexpected illness, a Good Shepherd priest is on call at all times (but may be delayed by the administration of other sacra-ments). At Southern Maine Health Center in Biddeford and at other area institutions, ask any nurse to contact the Catholic priest on call. Or you can call the church office (282-3321). Also, Good Shepherd Parish and Holy Spirit Parish (Kennebunk/Wells/Ogunquit) support the salary of a pastoral care worker at SMHC. Her name is Janice Biasin-Hanson, and she is a Good Shepherd parishioner. When patients identify them-selves as Catholics upon admission, Janice visits them, ensures that they receive Holy Communion if they so desire, and communicates with the priest on-call should anyone need the anointing of the sick or prayers for the dying. In this she is helped by extraor-dinary ministers of Holy Communion. We owe a great debt of thanks to all these won-derful people, including those who regularly bring Holy Communion to the house-bound. In Scarborough, priests from Cluster 22 (Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth/S. Port-land) are available as needed for patients at the Gosnell House hospice; members of the Gosnell House staff know how best to contact them. In Portland, there are priest-chaplains at Mercy Hospital, and the Catholic Appeal supports several priests serving the needs of patients at Maine Medical Center. (3) I also want to ensure that the Eucharist is brought to the homebound and residents of nursing facilities. If you are going to experience short or long-term convalescence and cannot make it to Mass for a few weeks or many months, you should inform the parish office so a minister can be assigned to bring you Communion. (4) I welcome (back) to the parish Catholic stu-dents from the University of New England. I appreciate seeing you at weekend Mass and encourage you, if you are able, to participate in parish life and ministries. In case you do not know, UNE was once Saint Francis College from which quite a few Mainers graduated. On the grounds, you can visit a small cemetery plot where the founders were buried, including Franciscan monks and two Canadian-born diocesan priests who served in Biddeford; Msgr. Arthur Décary and his brother Fr. Zénon Décary. Many locals believe that Father Zénon was a saintly miracle worker, and hope to see him beatified and canonized some day. (5) Thank You of the Week: To those who orga-nized, served and participated in our parish picnic at St. Philip last Sunday. It was well attended despite the “iffy” weather. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 7 - Msgr. Tonne: It was mid-morning of a Sunday when a tourist stopped at a gas station in a sleepy town of Kansas. He remarked to the attendant: “Pretty quiet town, isn’t it?” To which the gas man replied: “Seems like it, but just wait till church lets out. You’ll think all hell broke loose.”

BABY CLOTHES AND FURNITURE NEEDED: The Social Justice & Peace Commission would like

your support in helping 2 young women who are expecting babies in Sept. & Dec. On their

own and living temporarily at Sweetser, they have nothing for the babies they are expecting. They could use new or gently used baby clothes, as well as a new

or used crib, stroller, high chair and carrier. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. We

hope we can give them a helping hand to get started. Bring your contributions to the

Good Shepherd office or call Bonnie at 282-3954 to arrange for pickup.

UMaine Program Helps St. James School Launch

Weather Balloon in Biddeford “This is the best first day of school!” The excitement of St. James student Tucker Boucher was shared by his fellow class-mates and the teachers at the Biddeford

school when the year got off to a bang on Tuesday, September 6.

As the entire student body and staff counted down, a weather balloon expanded, popped, and launched into the clouds,

carrying student experiments on a journey across Maine. The experience was made possible thanks to a new

relationship between St. James and the University of Maine High Altitude Ballooning Program. Students come up with ideas for experiments and the program

launches the balloon, recovers the materials, and returns the results of the experiments to the school.

“I wanted to start the year off with a love of learning, some creative thinking, and something exciting

for the students,” said Nancy Naimey, principal at St. James. “All of the students watched and had big smiles on their faces.”

The middle-school students designed the experiments to see what effect the high altitude would have on an egg, cookie dough, a light bulb,

balloons, marshmallows, and other objects. They are able to follow the location of the balloon on a special website. As of Thursday afternoon, it

was west of Hiram, Maine. The students will also be able to view a video of the flight thanks to an attached GoPro

camera. Until then, the anticipation of the “findings” will continue at St. James.

“The kids are wondering if the cookie dough will cook, the egg will explode, or the light bulb won’t work,” said

Naimey. “It’s fun and a great way to start the year.”

To view a video of the launch, visit www.facebook.com/SaintJamesBiddeford/videos/1223709944347405/.

Pray and Play (Wednesdays at 9 am) is a group of young people who can feel

comfortable in bringing their joyful noise to Jesus in the tabernacle. The

intent is to spend a few minutes interacting, playing, and singing in the living room downstairs; then moving upstairs to the side room where the tabernacle is in Most Holy Trinity Church to pray the

Rosary in whole or part. A bonus is getting to develop a community within the parish of our youngest members. Babies and young

children on up are welcome with caregivers or parents. Please go to the FB group "Pray And Play @ MHT In Saco" or contact LJ Gombar at [email protected] for more information.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who covered 13 Masses at our worship sites two weekends ago, and to those who helped orchestrate the coverage to provide Major Raffle tickets to those who may not have received some in the mail. (Note: if you did not receive some in the mail and you are a registered parishioner, please use the form on page 2 or call the parish office to change/update your information. We did have a lot come back as “return to sender” and would like to avoid future postage fees, so we always appreciate your updates.) Thank you, too, to those of you who purchased tickets. We have more at the parish office if you need more.

Also, Melodee (Grandma's Kitchen) tells me that you have been very generous with pie fillings and is now asking for donations of flour, "Crisco", butter, & sugar. You may contact Melodee at 229-1347 to arrange for the drop off of your donation.

New and Like New: This year we are trying to return our New and Like New tables to its original state of tables of New and Like New Items. Denise described it best this week when she explained to someone that the tables should consist of gifts that you would consider giving to some-one else. Think of it as re-gifting an item. In the past, we have had to sort through things that did not sell at yard sales. This becomes time consum-ing and costly if we have to find a way of discarding these items. The purpose of these tables is not to be an Indoor Yard Sale. We will be collecting items the week leading up to the Christmas Fair.

What better way to promote your business or company than by donating an item to the Penny Raffle table? We will gladly display your business or company name next to the item that you donate. These are new items only. Please contact Ken Greenleaf at 590-5805 to let him know that you have an item to donate to the Penny Raffle table. Thank you so very much! The Culture of Life Committee is planning a Walk for Life coming up on Oct. 22.

Details will be forthcoming, but we are already excited about this new fundraising

walk because it will bring a number of parishioners, and some of different faiths, both young and old, together

for a walk as a demonstration of our commitment to Life. So look forward to this new effort to work joyfully together.

Bring the kids along in a wagon or carriage, and let us tell others of our desire to work towards all life issues.
