LENT – 2021

For many Catholics Lent revives memories of days when candy, TV, movies, and other signs of human celebration were “given up”. There is an old sense of Lent as a time of self-imposed penance and asceticism. The explicitly religious expression of the season might have taken the form of daily Mass attendance or weekly Stations of the Cross. Lent was to be endured. There is a legitimate sense of the prayer, asceticism and charity towards neighbors that are authentic hallmarks of the Lenten season. What is really new for us is the need to see all these practices and prayers in the light of the church’s annual retreat in preparation for the Triduum. Lent is first, last and foremost about Baptism. Baptism is about going down with Christ unto death and being raised up with him to glory. Lent is about dying to self for the life of others. This Lent Good Shepherd Parish will be focusing on BELIEF during the homilies from the priests and deacon. Belief in Jesus and all that it means. And also, the belief in relationship with Jesus and others and all that it means. This Lent I invite all families to think and pray for new members to our Catholic family here at Good Shepherd Parish. There are some families that have folks who are not fully Catholic. Maybe they have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation or maybe they have not been fully received into the Catholic Faith. This Lent would be the ideal time to answer God’s invitation and learn more about our Catholic Faith. There are already a number of very short videos that have been made, “Catholicism 101”, on our website. After viewing them, I would be happy to meet with your friends or family members or maybe even yourself in person in the parish office, or over ZOOM to answer your questions. Come Easter time, one could be received into the Catholic Faith, receive Communion and Confirmation or even be Baptized and be a full member of our Faith family. Lent 2021, seven weeks can change your life for all eternity! Got BELIEF? Let’s talk. Peace, Fr. Dave

Lent is our annual opportunity to grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus and to prepare for the celebration of his Resurrection. Spend time in prayerful Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Stay for an hour or just for a few minutes. Come after work, after school, or for a midday break. Invite a family member or friend. Our church is set up for and follows the Archdiocese’s distancing and sanitizing guidelines. Next Adoration includes a time for Reconciliation.

Select “Boston” from the drop down list of dioceses 4. Complete the registration process Once registration is complete you will be directed to an online PGC training through VIRTUS. Upon completion of that training, individuals will be directed to a link to an additional online training on mandated reporting in Massachusetts. Both online trainings must be completed to be in compliance with child protection requirements. The mandated reporter training can be found at http://51a.middlesexcac.org/.

What’s Up in Youth Ministry? Middle school and High School classes have continued online through the cold months. Our middle schoolers have been taking an active look at Catholic Morality with some colorful notetaking along the way. Our

Confirmation 2 class was visited by Sr. Nicole of the Salesian sisters to share a bit about her vocation. Our high school students have also been engaged in discussion on topics of our time from the death penalty to climate change, learning what our faith has to say on these issues. Please pray for us as we continue distance learning until it warms up again!

Would you like have a Mass said for someone?

In just a couple of weeks, we will be launching our parish’s annual Catholic Ap-peal. As you may know, the Catholic Appeal funds the 51 Central Ministries of the

Archdiocese that support our parish on a daily ba-sis—especially as we continue to navigate the pandemic. You may have already received a letter from Cardinal Seán asking for your early support. If you are able, please consider responding to that request to help our parish meet our Appeal goal early. You can offer your support by going online to bostoncatholicappeal.org to make your gift, or scan the QR code. Thank you for your support!

Please read the Registration and Safety Protocols that will allow us to gather more safely.y y.

Registering for Mass Participation: The only way for us to gather safely is to do so in very reduced numbers that will allow for social distancing. Each parishioner will need to sign up

to attend a Mass and bring a ticket with them. Please us this link from the weekly email to sign up for a ticket to attend Mass. Click the Select a Date link in red on the right side of the Eventbrite page. Please select the Mass/es that you plan to attend and input your registration information. Please list the number to people in your party who live

together and will be able to sit together in a pew. You will receive an email with your ticket confirmation. We will have a list at the door , no need to print. Please sign up for the waitlist if you would like to attend and the Mass is full. This will help us with future Mass planning to know how many

parishioners would like to plan to attend. We may also be able to extend additional spots from the waiting list depending on the configuration of family groups. If you do not have access to the internet or have any difficulty with the registration process, please call the parish office at 508 650 3545. We will be able to register you by phone.

Before Mass: Please wash hands before leaving home. Feel free to bring a travel-size container of hand sanitizer or hand wipes. Please sanitize your hands as you enter the church. Everyone is required to bring and wear a mask. Maintain social distancing protocols of 6-ft separation entering, sitting, moving about and exiting the church. Entrance for Mass will be at the front doors facing Cochituate Road, for St Ann (the side ramp entrance will be only for those who cannot use

stairs) and the plaza doors for St Zepherin. A basket will be available for the offertory collection at the main entrance of both churches. Seating is limited to insure proper distancing (6-ft apart in all directions). Families and those living in the same household can sit together. Some rows will be blocked off to maintain the required 6ft distancing. Seating will proceed by filling the available pews from the altar front to the back of the church. Ushers will be present to assist with the seating process, when possible.

All seating begins 6-ft in from the end of each row to allow for distancing during Communion.

During Mass Pray along with the Mass. A bow or gesture replaces a handshake or other physical signs of peace/greeting during the liturgy. All hymnals have been removed and there will be no congregational singing nor will a choir or cantor be allowed until further notice. At Communion time, parishioners are asked to come to communion as directed at each site and return by the side aisle, observing the 6-ft dis-

tance markers on the floor. Everyone should leave their seat even if you do not plan to receive Communion in order to avoid people having to step over one another.

Holy Communion will be distributed by means of the Consecrated Host only. Please fully extend your arm with hands cupped as the priest/deacon drops the host into your hand. Then step to the side, where the floor is marked, lift up the bottom of your mask and place the host into your mouth before returning to your seat.

Please be mindful to not come into contact with the priest or deacon while receiving Holy Communion. If contact is made, the priest/deacon will purify and sanitize their hands before continuing to distribute Holy Communion. You cannot wear gloves to receive Holy Communion.

Priests, deacons, and other ministers of communion will wear a mask for the distribution of Holy Communion. Remove masks only to receive Holy Communion.

After Mass: At the end of Mass, please leave the church immediately by the doors that you originally entered.
