A dad is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again.

Father’s Day is less than a month away, so kids, it’s time to start planning a very special day for that superman in your life. September 1st is the day when men, women and children all over Australia celebrate their dads for all the love, joy and excitement they bring into our lives. Of course it goes without saying that we appreciate our dads 365 days of the year, but this is the one day that you can actually tell him just how much he means to you.

One unknown author wisely proclaimed, “A father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow.” So show your dad this Father’s day just how much you look up to him.

Spare a thought for the kids who, for whatever reason, don’t have a dad around. For some, it’s a lonely and isolating day at school when the rest of the kids have their dads with them for the customary Father’s Day school activities. For others, it’s a bittersweet day, with memories of dads who passed too quickly from this world – no longer here to share our triumphs and tragedies, but always sharing a special place in our hearts!

From the Editor

Here we are in August already! And wasn’t July a busy month? For me, it was a month of reflection and reminiscing. I spent time thinking about friends of the past and present, life gets so busy but nothing can replace the memories and special times we have spent with loved ones over the years. It’s nice to take a trip down memory lane and remind ourselves of all the special friends that have held a part in our lives at one time or another.

This month, our resident experts in Money Matter$ on page 8 raise some interesting points about comparing apples with apples when comparing home loans. Certainly worth a read if you are currently assessing your mortgage. We welcome a new regular article from Pastor Paul Marshall of Foothills Vineyard Church on page 6 and of course, a delicious winter warming recipe on page 10 that’s sure to please.

Spoil your dad next month as Father’s Day falls on the 1st September; please spare a thought for those that will find this time difficult for one reason or another.

For now, enjoy this month’s community news and this month I urge you to take a moment to appreciate just how wonderful you are!

Mulgoa Rise Home Sites Snapped Up In First WeekendThirteen of 25 new prestige home sites in Mulgoa Rise, most with picturesque views

Glenmore Park Residents Group NEWSTwo subjects are on the radar of residents this month. One,

a topic which has been raised a number of times at meetings is the noise generated by barking dogs. If you are a dog owner and work during the day it may pay to ask some of your neighbours if your dog barks constantly when you are not home. If this is the case, ask your local vet what you can do to minimise the barking. Perhaps your dog is bored or they may be disturbed by other dogs in the vicinity.

Before contacting council regarding a barking dog you will need to keep a diary of when the barking occurs, council rangers can act on your behalf if the noise persists. More information available on the council website.

Of interest also it has been reported that some people are tagging light posts in the lower Blue mountains area with two colours to indicate if a dog in a nearby house is suitable as a “fighting” dog or as a “bait” dog. Keep your eyes open and report if your dog disappears.

The second topic is household rubbish. Recently PCC advised that bins would be checked to ensure that they were being used correctly. ie recycle, green waste & other household rubbish. Our group understands that a review has recently been conducted in the South Penrith area & some bins have been cross contaminated. If in any doubt as to what goes where, contact PCC who can advise the correct manner in which to use your bins.

It’s so easy to be overwhelmed by everything happening around us. Things we don’t like. Negative and annoying things - or people - we complain and whinge about. It’s so easy to dwell

on these things, thinking the world has got it in for us. It can sap the life out of us and take the joy out of living.

The Bible talks about a better way to live - a way that brings deep joy and contentment. A way that lifts our eyes from the depressing things our minds love to think and obsess about. A way that’s so simple, so liberating – you’ll wonder why you haven’t done it before.

The answer is so important, that it’s repeated many times in the Bible’s book of Psalms: “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.”

Seems simple, doesn’t it? Have you tried living your life thanking God for absolutely everything He has given you? It will transform your life!

He has given you so much! Each and every day actively look for all the good things God gives you – things you don’t normally notice, or simply take for granted. Thank Him for them. Start each day thanking God for all you can think of and then finish each night thanking Him. Even try keeping a notebook to write them in so you can remind yourself – especially for times when you feel down.

There will be many things to thank God for no matter how bad you feel. Thank God for the beautiful world He has created for you to enjoy. For each person in your family. Each one of your friends. Your job. For every day you are alive. The sunshine. The rain. Glenmore Park! Thank God that He absolutely loves you. That His Son Jesus died for you so that when you put your trust in Him, you are forgiven and have friendship with God. That God will never leave you. That He is totally trustworthy and faithful.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” Get to know this amazing God so you can live a transformed life in thankfulness to Him. We would love to see you on Sundays so you can get to know God for yourself!

Love Receives Community Service AwardThe Premier of NSW and Minister for Western Sydney, Barry

O’Farrell and Stuart Ayres the Member for Penrith presented the Community Service Award to Glenmore Park resident, John Love in July.

“John is a tireless worker and longtime volunteer for the National Serviceman’s Association and it was wonderful to have the Premier of NSW Barry O’Farrell present the Award to him on Monday night at Community Cabinet” said Mr Ayres.

“The Community Service Award is a way for the Government to acknowledge the inspiring quality of members within our community for their service and achievements. John Love is the driving force and coordinator for a new program run by the City of Penrith RSL Sub Branch, called the “Day Club”, Mr. Ayres said.

When people meet a Catholic priest they tend to assume, u n d e r s t a n d a b l y , that he has been a Catholic from birth, a “cradle Catholic” as

we say. In the past this would have been a fair assumption, but there has been a distinct shift in this regard over the past couple of decades and the priest you see at Mass these days may well have been raised in a different Christian tradition or perhaps not as a Christian at all. We are a diverse bunch indeed and our parishioners are no exception!

I mention this because in a month or so many Catholic parishes will be seeking expressions of interest from those who wish to enquire about the Catholic faith with the possibility (obligation free!) of becoming a Catholic. The process is known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA, and is run by many Catholic parishes, including ours here in Glenmore Park. Every year we get enquiries from people from a range of backgrounds who are interested in finding out about the Catholic faith. They are keen to hear from practising Catholics about why they value their faith as opposed to what they hear in the media and from the uninformed about the Catholic Church and Christianity in general.

Some of these people after prayer and careful discernment choose not to join the Church. Others, who perhaps have been baptised in another Christian church choose to be received into the Catholic Church through Confirmation and Communion and others, who have never formally been a part of any Christian

church, choose to take the step of being baptised and then, at the same time, receiving Confirmation and Communion and so becoming full members of the Catholic Church.

The process usually takes seven or eight months but is really up to the individual: the Holy Spirit works differently in each person! The RCIA process involves enquirers coming to weekly gatherings to engage in a conversation about the core teachings of the faith, coming to Mass each Sunday to praise and worship and to get to know members of the community – after all, being a Christian is more than sitting through a church service! There are numerous opportunities to ask questions (including the awkward ones!) and be better informed about why it is that so many people choose to follow Christ in an active way in the Catholic tradition.

“Father, I’ve been thinking about becoming a Catholic...”

Soul Matters It seems to me that we are whizzing through our round-a-bouts

faster, working harder, and juggling more, but that all of this doesn’t necessarily make us happier.

Jesus taught that we live our lives from the inside out, or from the heart. The routine rolls on, but without attending to the inside of us—to our soul or heart—happiness and peace can be elusive. We might be successful at some level, but it is deep inside of us that we work out whether our lives are meaningful and find happiness. I

mean deep down where fear and insecurity drives us, where we regret the skinny state of our relationships, feel guilt, experience being loved, and assess whether what we are doing with our lives matters in the grand scheme.

Jesus invites us to receive God’s love and mercy in a way that heals and liberates us on the inside. When we can stop long enough to hear what is happening inside us and do some work there, we can dare to hope for deeper happiness amidst what is already good about our lives.

Comparing Apples with ApplesWhen comparing home loans most people look at the interest rate and then maybe at the

fees, but very few will check the Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI). LMI is an insurance policy that is required if you take out a home loan for more than 80% of the

value your home, paid for by the borrower but protects the lender. The premium is calculated as a percentage of the loan amount and this increases proportionally to the loan amount and the loan to valuation ratio (LVR).

WHAT’S COOKING?Ginger Golden Syrup Pudding Warm up your winter cooking and spice up your life with a hint of ginger.• Serves 6 Ingredients 5cm piece fresh ginger, peeled150g butter, softened2/3 cup caster sugar2 eggs11/2 cups self-raising flour, sifted1/2 teaspoon baking powder, sifted1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon1/3 cup milk1/2 cup golden syrupCustard, to serveMethod1. Lightly grease a 6 cup-capacity pudding basin (with lid). Using the lid as a guide, cut a circle from baking paper. Set aside.2. Finely grate 1cm of the ginger (1teaspoon). Slice remaining ginger into matchsticks.3. Using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating to combine. Add grated ginger. Stir to combine. Sift half the flour, baking powder and cinnamon over butter mixture. Stir to combine. Add half the milk. Stir to combine. Repeat with remaining flour, baking powder, cinnamon and milk.4. Touch is so very important for humans. Psychotherapist, Virginia Satir, says that we need four hugs per day for survival, eight hugs per day for maintenance, and twelve hugs per day for growth. Tiny babies that have all of their needs attended to but don’t receive touch, affection, and attention are at risk of dying from ‘failure to thrive’. It’s so easy to touch and hug our little ones because they are so cute and climb all over us a lot of the time. But older kids need hugs too, just as much as the little ones.

They need hugs and positive attention more than they need iPads, iPods, and Minecraft. Humans are first and foremost social and emotional beings, not logical or rational. We are very good at building bridges, and spaceships, and super computers, but essentially we all have the need to belong – to other people. I see so many kids, lost in the technological world, but struggling socially and emotionally because what they really need is their parents’ attention and affection.

The Commonwealth government recommends that children aged between 5 and 18 years should have no more than 2 hours of screen time (from all sources) per day (http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/screen_time.html).

Attention is a good thing. It’s a survival mechanism. If your child can’t get attention from the most important person in her world (that’s YOU), who is he or she going to get it from? How much of that attention is positive and how much is negative? For every negative way of parenting there is a positive way of parenting. As Diane Loomans so eloquently says, she would do less correcting and more connecting.
