A Mother’s Gift

“Best mum ever” Lynnette Milne, after donating a kidney to her son Aaron

Local Glenmore Park resident, Aaron Milne, went to donate blood at a local blood bank 4 years ago, only to discover that he had extremely high blood pressure and couldn’t donate until he received a clearance from his local doctor. The doctor ordered full blood work to be carried out, as it was uncommon for a seemingly fit and healthy 26 year old man to have such high blood pressure. Initial results indicated low kidney function, so Aaron then had a biopsy, discovering that his kidneys were in full renal failure with a disease called igA Nephropathy.

When Aaron told his family, they all put their hands up to be tested for possible matches to donate a kidney. The specialist only wanted to test his Mother and Father first because they would be the most likely match for the transplant to be successful. Aaron’s Dad had heart problems, however his Mum was fit and healthy.

With her determination to give her son another chance of a healthy life with his wife and two beautiful boys, she spent much of the next four years travelling to and from Queensland, doing everything the doctors asked of her from making

From the EditorHere we are, in May, celebrating our Mums,

Grandma’s and Nan’s both past and present. Mother’s day is a time that we celebrate and reflect on the time we have or the time we had with these wonderfully special people we call MUM.

Our front page story struck a real chord with me, a story that not only warms the heart but also speaks a real story, about a real family, a real condition and a real need, Organ Donation. The smiles on Aaron and his mum Lynnette’s faces speak volumes about the bond that exists between mother and son, but is further strengthened during such a life-changing experience as this.

The most influential person in my life is my mum. Like Aaron, my mum was faced with a sudden onset of renal failure; and fortunately for us her husband was able to offer an organ donation. The past 8 years have been nothing short of miraculous, there is no doubt she is the strongest woman I know, and will ever know. I will never truly understand the difficult journey she has travelled and the challenges she continues to face, but I am extremely thankful that she is the determined being she is, for the joy that she brings to the lives of my two boys.

This month we have loads to report on, from our very own local Author on page 11, some highly sought after information for new parents in Parents Corner and our newest column, Money Matters on page 7. There’s something for everyone this month!

Be cheerful, it’s contagious. Happy reading!

World Class Equestrian Centre at Fernhill Estate

Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa is proud to announce the opening of a purpose built World Class Equestrian Centre. New owners Brenda and Simon Tripp now offer the best in show jumping coaching, boarding and agistment. The Centre boasts facilities which include a show jumping arena, spectacular stables, yards, 2km track, trail rides, day paddocks, two training areas, boarding services and Greg and Thomas McDermott as trainers.

The Equestrian Centre will cater for beginner’s right through to the experienced. It’s a great opportunity for locals to experience a Centre of this level that has never been available to them in the past. The Fernhill team also encourage riders of all ages to bring their own horses in for lessons.

The Fernhill teamis headed up by Jenny and Greg McDermott. The team is rich in talent with some of Australia’s leading showjumpers including Tom McDermott and the Tripp girls, Samantha and Jessica. Tom was awarded the HSBC FEI (Federation Equestrian International) Rising Star Best Young Equestrian Award in Turkey in November, 2012. He was the youngest person in the world to win a World Cup Qualifier as an 18 year old. Some of Tom’s achievements also include representing Australia at Nations Cup in New Zealand last month and winning Silver at the Youth Olympics in 2010.

Both Tripp girls have also represented Australia show jumping overseas. Jessica recently achieved 4th place in Mexico at the Junior World Cup, becoming only the 2nd Australian youth ever to qualify for this prestigious event. She is the current Junior Show Jumping Girl Rider Champion for the Sydney Royal Easter Show 2013 and hopes to attend and make a place at the Youth Olympics in China in 2014.

Leading trainer Greg McDermott represented Australia at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games in Showjumping and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. The Centre hopes to host a number of elite events in the future, including the Horse of the Year in 2014.

Complementing the Equestrian Centre, Fernhill Estate is the ultimate events destination, playing host to weddings, functions, celebrations and special occasions, location filming and photo shoots. Fernhill Estate also played host to the Tough Mudder event last month and will repeat it again in October this year.

Fernhill Estate Equestrian Centre is located on Mulgoa Road in Mulgoa Valley. Visit their website at www.fernhillestate.net.au or on Facebook under Fernhill Equestrian.

A Mother’s Giftcontinued from Pg 1... healthy food choices, to staying active to keep herself in premium health for the impending surgery.

At Christmas last year, Aaron was told the time had come to prepare for surgery. The surgery was a successwith Aaron being a star pupil. His new kidney is functioning wonderfully. His Mum, after spending an extra week inhospital recovering from an infection, is also on her way to making a full recovery.

The Milne family hope that by telling their story, they can prompt people to talk to their families about organ donations. Organ donation of a loved one that can no longer be with them could save the lives of many other people and hopefully one day, there will be enough donor organs for people who need them.

It is believed that approx, 1700 people are on the waiting list in Australia at any one time and the average transplant patient will wait around 6-7 years before receiving a kidney.

People can register to become a donor on www.hic.gov.au or www.donatelife.gov.au or on the Medicare Australia website.

Sorting Things Out We all know how important it is to get good

information in life, even on basic things like which milk to drink or if you should even drink milk at all. We spend much time thinking through which car to buy or which school to

send out kids too, but I wonder, how much time do we spend thinking about Jesus; who he was and what he came to do. Straight away, some will say, “Doesn’t matter” or “Who cares”, but here’s the thing, Jesus said that what you think about him, will determine where we spend eternity. Now that is a BIG thought! But is Jesus right? Is he wrong? How do you know? But Jesus also says that by putting into practice what he says about life, that you will actually be living the best life. Again, is he right? There are so many big questions and issues that Jesus brings to the table. Jesus is the man you can’t afford to ignore.

With this in mind, at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we like to introduce people to the real Jesus. The real Jesus who lived and died and who rose again and who calls you and I to follow him and to know and to put our trust in him and to have our lives shaped by his promises.

A favourite verse of mine from the book of John in the Bible is “These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” Get to know Jesus!

Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 and 7pm. Plus activities for adults and young people right throughout the week

Each Sunday at our 4 services (8.30; 10:15; 5 & 7pm) in May and June we’ll spend some time getting to know the real Jesus. This real Jesus has transformed the lives of hundreds of people in Glenmore Park and the surrounding suburbs. We’d love you to join us!

You are also invited to some other special things that are coming up at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, your local Church...a Sunday May 5th for our special Birthday Celebration

Glenmore Park Residents Group NEWSThe April meeting of Glenmore Park Residents Group

welcomed Penrith City Mayor, Mark Davies who gave an informative overview of council’s responsibilities to the residents of the wider Penrith community.

One of the main points of interest for Glenmore Park residents is the expansion of the shopping centre. Mayor Davies told the meeting that he would further persue information on this project which has been in the pipeline for 2-3 years. There is no obligation on the developers to set a firm start date and at the moment it does not look like starting until the new financial year at best.

On another note, Mayor Davies said that the graffiti campaign held over recent times has reduced the incidence of graffiti by a huge margin and that is largely thanks to early notification by residents and early removal. The next task is about litter reduction as this has a big impact not only on the visual landscape but also in the matter of council workers having to remove the litter from ovals and reserves before mowing can take place. This takes time and also adds to the cost of keeping our open spaces clean. Council is in the process of putting together a plan to help reduce the litter in the community.

There is a continuing programme to remove algae bloom in the area of the Loch & surrounding wet areas and work has begun in cleaning up the Blue Hills wetlands. Some of the paved areas around our road junctions which are lifting have also been earmarked to have the pavers removed and the area sealed with bitumen. Please take the time to go to our facebook page and “like” us.

SPOTLIGHT ON . . . CRYSTAL CLARITY & HARMONY

Kim Watson Feeling stressed, uncertain or

just out of sorts? Have you ever thought that you might need a Chakra Alignment? Kim Watson of Crystal Clarity & Harmony is here to help.

Chakras are the energy centers within our body that control and store our emotions, thoughts and beliefs. They hold your souls’ purpose and when they are imbalanced it can bring confusion, depression, pain or illness within our bodies.

Kim has been developing in this field for 6 years and has had her own business for two years.

She works predominantly from home, however she holds “reading parties“ for 4 or more people and will go to them.

Kim has completed many courses over the years from Reiki I & II; Crystal Light Healing I, II & III; Angelic Reiki 1st & 2nd Degrees, Tarot - Meditation Practitioner, Soul Connect/Energy Awareness (Psychometry). She is currently studying Mediumship - the ability to contact departed loved ones and others in the spirit world.

According to Kim, most of the qualifications are within us – it‘s just a matter of unlocking your gifts.

“To do this you need to trust your gut instinct, have faith in the spirit world, and of course follow your heart as to what avenues/paths you wish to travel. You also need to find yourself a good teacher and they say that the teacher finds the student, “said Kim. “ I know that I am not meant to do anything else in my life but be of service to others. I love doing this healing work as it gives me so much fulfillment to see that I have helped someone.”

Mother’s day is just around the corner, so if you have an amazing lady in your life that truly deserves some “ME” time and needs to escape the world for a while, why not treat her to a 1 hour Crystal or Reiki Healing. An experience that is gentle, effective and relaxing – where she will be immersed in the love and light of the universe.

Although Anzac Day has come and gone for another year, the memories and long term effects of the events which transpired so many years ago, continue to have a lasting impact on the lives of each generation of Australian families. The reason for this loss in essence is that each ANZAC casualty was willing to pay the highest sacrifice in war, the giving of their very lives, to the very end, for a cause greater than themselves.

The world wars we remember are saturated with memories and diary entries of men and women who demonstrate a kind of courage which goes beyond our comprehension at times. It is a sacrificial courage where in one moment of life, you would count your life as less worth protecting than another’s. This kind

of courage is about a willingness to be courageous even unto death, an uncommon courage which takes us beyond ourselves towards a freedom in a way which transcends our worldly constructs. This is sacrificial courage which forms heroes and heroines, legends and even history itself.

Interestingly, it can be found in that moment of truth, in every one of us because sacrificial Courage is due to our godness, one of those traits within humanity that is in fact because, as the Bible teaches, we are made in the image of God. A God-likeness, A God-like character, A God-like courage!

There is another day Christianity remembers, a day where the enemy lines were bearing down, and where the son of God remained resolute against the onslaught of enemy fire which peppered his soul to exhaustion. It is in the garden of Gethsemene we see the original template of the Anzac spirit of sacrificial courage in the way Jesus deals with his final hours. It is God in all his glory willing to forfeit his life so that we might live. And Jesus teaches us here, in this moment of truth that this kind of courage is found when we surrender our lives to that which is greater than ourselves. Here Jesus will put aside his glory as the king of everything, his majesty and honor, his power and omnipotence. He will face his own imminent suffering and ultimately his execution, so as to commit himself to the will of his father and the saving of our lives.

Many of us struggle to find purpose in life because we have been disconnected from the greatest cause of all, God. We struggle to find meaning and purpose in our studies, our work place, even our own family life. Sometimes we simply struggle to see how amazingly blessed we are just to be alive, in such a rich, safe and free place like Australia. Plugging in to God’s cause, his will for the world and his will for you, gives you a reason to live well. Many of our war heroes lived well and so when the moment of truth came, they were able also to die well. Are you living for a cause that allows you to live well?

This is what separates mediocrity from greatness, joy from the melancholy, true grit and determination from half-heartedness and failure, so that we can aspire to that which we were made for and so that even in simple things, we may find a deep and lasting joy. For to know God is the beginning of wisdom, but to live for his cause, this brings ultimate joy and purpose and takes true courage to pursue.

Live well! Rev Mark Bonnici

Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only The Piano Player

DAVID SCHEEL is a true Australian success story, so much so that he is regarded internationally as one of the finest solo musical comedy performers in the world.

Born in Adelaide, David first tasted success in England, starring in the

famous satirical News Revue in London’s West End. He then turned to devising solo shows, and the result was DON’T SHOOT ME, I’M ONLY THE PIANO PLAYER. An instant hit, sell-out London performances were followed by 3 consecutive Edinburgh Festivals, and the critical acclaim that goes with them. Not surprisingly, David soon found himself a regular on British TV and radio, in addition to touring widely to over 30 countries, and performing with the likes of Cleo Laine, Eartha Kitt, Ben Elton, Jay Leno (in Los Angeles), Norman Wisdom and Patricia (“Hyacinth Bucket”) Routledge.

The BBC Arts Review programme described David as being “as funny as any, wittier than most, and, uniquely, a concert pianist of international stature...He stands alone, in a class of his own.”

David will be performing at the Lighthouse Theatre – Penrith Anglican College, Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills, at 2.00 p.m.on Saturday, 11th May. “This is a lovely, modern, state of the art theatre, “ says David. “It’s perhaps the region’s best kept secret!”

Bookings can only be made online, via this link: http://trybooking.com/CFZV For more info, visit www.davidscheel.com or phone 4787 1817

It is a common misconception that all home loans are the same but there are literally hundreds of different home loans on the market today provided by all sorts or Banks and Lenders, and each one of them is different.

And the differences can be huge, like whether your income type is counted towards your borrowing capacity, or whether your savings are considered “genuine”, or even whether your house is acceptable. These differences can mean that your borrowing capacity is dramatically reduced and can even mean that your application is declined.

You could scour the net researching each one or walk into every bank branch, but there is one way that you can quickly find a great home loan that suits your needs. Talk to a Mortgage Broker.

A Mortgage Broker can instantly compare hundreds of loans to find one that’s right for you and because they are paid by the lender, there are usually no additional fees for their service.

Hail Mary For Catholics, May is the month in which

we acknowledge in a special way Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary, of course, has a special place in the life of Catholics at all times, but May traditionally has been the month in which Catholics might offer extra prayers for Mary’s intercession or make an effort to

gather in groups to pray the Rosary together and so on.For many Christians who are not Catholic or Orthodox, this might

seem a strange practice and it is often misunderstood. The practice of asking for Mary to prayerfully intercede on our behalf (“Pray for us”) is part of a belief in the communion of saints.

This belief might sound a little technical but it is actually quite simple and rational for a person who believes in the afterlife. When we ask a saint to intercede or pray on our behalf, be it Mary or any other saint for that matter, what we are asking them to do is no different to what we might ask a friend to do in asking them to pray for us. People of faith often ask a friend to pray for them if they are encountering some sort of difficulty or know that one is imminent, for example an upcoming medical procedure, a job interview or an exam. Asking a friend to pray for us helps us to know that we are part of a larger believing community, that we have their love and support and that our God is receiving the prayers of many people of faith.

This same dynamic happens merely in a different realm when we ask the saints to pray for us. Because the saints are in heaven, living in the light and life of our loving and merciful God, they are in a good position to pray for us! Their prayers on our behalf are certainly powerful and effective because they are close to God.

Asking Mary to pray for us makes sense because she is the first among the saints. She is, after all, the mother of Jesus, the mother of God and our mother too, the mother of the Church. Asking her

to pray for us therefore makes a lot of sense and is a very natural action for those who believe in the connectedness between us here on earth and those who are now dwelling with God in heaven. Yes, we can indeed pray directly to God and ought to do so, but why not ask for the powerful intercession of the saints, especially Mary, the mother of Jesus, the mother of God.

After all, which good and loving son could possibly ignore the requests of the mother he loves and adores?

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Blessings and prayers, Fr Robert Riedling

Glenmore Heritage Valley Rich in HistoryIn 1824, the building of Glenmore Heritage Valley began.

Mr Henry Cox was the founder and built an ‘L’ shaped building and underneath was cellars for wine to be stored. The name of Glenmore was suggested as it was the Mackenzie’s birthplace in Scotland, and Miss Frances MacKenzie was Henry Cox’s wife. Almost 100 years later in May 1927, Glenmore opened its doors as a Golf Course and Country Club. The beautiful greens of the golf links surround the house and the cool tranquil cedar-lined interior and high ceilings are all reminders of a grand past.

The history of Glenmore Heritage Valley is invaluable. The building is over 180 years old and is still in great condition. With so much to offer, why not visit Glenmore Heritage Valley at 690 Mulgoa Road, Mulgoa, only 6 minutes from Glenmore Park. I often think that my life would be much more enjoyable if some of the people around me weren’t so annoying, needy, hardwork or... (You can fill in the blank with your own words) When I am angry at someone I live or work with, I spend a lot of energy feeling sorry for myself and complaining to all and sundry about how hard done -by I am. I then spend the night fuming and fantasizing and plotting my revenge on them. I basically wish they would change and be different to who they are. Numerous times after a relationship breakdown, someone will say,’Why on Earth did you marry them?’ and a common response is, ‘ I thought I could change them’. Often we can make our partner our little project. The irony is that we fall in love with people because they are who they are and then we set about changing them little bit by little bit.

However, experience suggests the only person I can change is myself. So the invitation then becomes how can I manage my reaction to this annoying person? One thing I find which mellows my response to the other is for me to remember that just as I have to put up with them, they too have to put up with me and my foibles, moods and brokenness.

Heartland comes to Glenmore ParkHeartland is the latest book from local author

Cathryn Hein. It is based on a fictional property in rural Victoria called Glenmore which is an amazing coincidence as the name was chosen before Cathryn moved to Glenmore Park!

Cathryn Hein has recently moved into our local community and has just had her third novel published by Penguin Australia. Heartland follows the success of her earlier novels, Promises and Heart of the Valley. Cathryn grew up in South Australia with

three generations of jockeys in the family and loved her horses. She also loved reading but so many of her favourite books were based in America or Europe and she wanted to read about Australian rural life.

Cathryn started writing stories at school and her short fiction has been recognised in numerous contests and published in Woman’s Day. Her partner’s posting to France enabled her to complete her first book, Promises. Cathryn says ‘I write Australian romantic fiction featuring sexy rural men who fall hard for strong-minded women. But like life on the land, love isn’t always easy. My heroes and heroines have to jump a few obstacles before they reach their happily ever afters, so it’s just as well there’s always a horse or two on hand.’

Heartland is set in rural Victoria and when Callie Reynolds arrives at Glenmore, the property she’s recently inherited, the last thing she wants is to be saddled with a warty horse, an injured neighbour and a mad goose. Haunted by her sister’s death and her fractured family, all she wants is freedom. But Callie hasn’t counted on falling for Matt Hawkins, an ex-soldier determined to fulfil his own dream of land and family. Nor could she predict the way the land, animals and people of Glenmore will capture her heart. Callie is faced with impossible choices. But she must find the courage to decide where her future lies, even if it costs her everything she holds dear.

Cathryn’s first two novels, Promises and Heart of the Valley were finalists in the 2011 and 2012 Australian Romance Readers Awards.

You can find out more about Cathryn and where to find her books at www.cathrynhein.com or www.penguin.com.au Story: M.Stepniewski

THIS SPORTING LIFEAustralian Team Selection for Tupaea

Fifteen year old basketball prodigy Tahlia Tupaea (Glenmore Park) has taken another giant step in an already amazing basketball career, winning selection to the Australian Under 19 Women’s team (Gems) which will tour China in May this year.

Tupaea, who is a member of both the Penrith Panthers Under 18 and senior Waratah Championship League women’s teams, trialed with both the Australian Under 19 and Under 17 squads in 2012 and despite her tender years, has won selection into the older of the two Australian squads.

That selection will however have some unfortunate but perhaps expected consequences for someone of her tender years, with the youngster withdrawing from the NSW Under 18 Women’s team which will contest the Australian Championships later this month.

Given Tahlia has also just finished the 2012-2013 WNBL season as a member of the Sydney Uni Flames, her father Omar was understandably concerned over his daughter’s already torrid schedule, stating “We’ve withdrawn Tahlia from the Under 18 National Championships, due to the scheduling”.

“We discussed the situation with Basketball Australia and the logical decision was to withdraw Tahlia from the Nationals, as she will have enough to cope with already, including the flight to China and becoming familiar with the local food and environment”

“Perhaps most importantly, the break will ensure Tahlia can give hundred percent effort in China , rather than having to recover from first playing in a week-long tournament in Australia, having a couple of days rest, then flying off to China,” said Omar.

A further selection camp will be conducted 29 June - 2 July at Basketball Australia’s National Centre of Excellence at the AIS in Canberra.r Tahlia Tupaea in action for the Penrith Panthers in the Waratah Championship League (WCL)

PAWS A WHILEwith Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital

Dr Katrina Warren and Kelly Gill held their second Border Collie Fun Day at Castle Hill Showground on April 27th .

They smashed the Guinness World Record with the ‘most number of dogs ever recorded in a professional photo shoot.’ Fiona Erskine at Ffire Photography was the professional photographer.

They had 503 Border Collies in 1 photo without the owners (the record was 101)!! Absolutely amazing to see that many Border Collies in 1 place at 1 time.

Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital were the official veterinarian’s at the event. We had a huge purple tent at the showground and we had the best time. We offered free veterinary checks and answered many questions on the day. We talked our heads off and gave out information handouts on different diseases. Thankfully there were no accidents or injuries to any of the dogs on the day.

Smashed Guinness World Record at Border Collie Fun Day

We also had a free raffle to guess the number of lollies in the jar and the lucky winner received a huge gift basket full of doggie goodies. The kids loved the helium balloons.

There was so much to see, including: agility, flyball, and The Wonderdogs Trick Show. I can’t believe how fast the day flew by and how much fun was packed into four hours.

The Border Collie Club was also there and Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital made a $500 donation to the Border Collie Cancer Research Project in coordination with Sydney University. For more information:www.facebook.com/tobythewonderdog

Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.

Emotional CoachingAs promised, this month I provide an example of how to do

“emotion coaching” when your child is angry. Many parents find it difficult to ‘stay with’ their child when he or

she is angry. Sometimes the child is being what the adult believes to be illogical or irrational and finds it difficult to be sympathetic or empathic with the child. This morning, I witnessed a child having a huge tantrum at the park. He went from 0 to 100 in seconds. To her credit, his Mum stayed very, very calm. She tried to redirect him with the iPhone, food, activity. She tried to get him to do some deep breathing, but he wasn’t calm enough for that yet. Then when that didn’t work, she warned him that she would smack his hand if he didn’t stop, telling him that he could be as loud as he wants at home, but not in public. Then she told him he would have to go and sit in the car (in the shade, with an adolescent present). He did quieten down after a while sitting in the car, but I heard him crying for Mummy. The Mum did her absolute best with what she knew, but distraction, redirection, smacks, and banishment didn’t sooth that agitated child brain. I wondered whether he might calm down if I were able to do emotion coaching with him.

Young children are not overly logical or rational. The part of the brain that controls logic and reasoning doesn’t start firing up until about the age of four (years that is), and continues developing until the age of 25 years. During adolescence, this part of the brain goes into hibernation for a while. So, if you are wondering why your children, big and small, don’t think things through at times, it’s because developmentally they are not ready! That’s why you need to be the bigger, stronger, wiser, and kind person for your children for a very long time.

Emotion coaching isn’t something you should do when you are in the red zone. You are not going to be particularly good at it if your emotions are activated. But, if you are feeling calm, give it a go.

Scene: (I’ve pinched this example from another parent): Child enjoys pressing the button to close the automatic garage door. However, the child also runs away from Mum once he is out of the car, which is a big concern for Mum. So, Mum says he can only close the garage door if he stays with Mum. On this occasion, the child ran off and Mum pressed the button to close the garage door. Child noticed what Mum had done, and got very angry that he had missed his opportunity to close the door.

Parent: “You are so very angry that you couldn’t close the door.” (Noticing the emotion.)

“You want me to open the door for you again so you can press the button.”

“You are screaming at me to open the door and stamping your feet.” (Reflecting what he was saying and observing what he was doing.)

“It’s such a big feeling.”“You are so, so mad. Your face is going red. Your fists are tight.”“Now you are starting to cry. You look so sad.”“Where do you feel the anger in your body? Where do you feel

your sadness?” (Locating the emotion in the body.)“I would feel sad too if I didn’t get to do something I wanted to

do.” (Empathising.)If your child hits you, then tell him that hitting is not ok. Hold his

hands gently so he can’t hit you. Repeat gently “It’s OK to be angry but not to hit. I won’t let you hit me.”

Crying is healing. If the child wants a hug, then offer a hug. Hugging releases a calming hormone in the brain called Oxytocin. Breathing is also very good. You can role model stress releasing or calming breaths for your child. You don’t need to explain what you are doing, the mirror neurones in your child’s brain will pick up on what you are doing.

When the child has calmed down, the parent can ask the child

what he might need to do next time so he can press the button. (Exploring). This is not the time for a lecture. It’s a time to calmly and simply go through the rules about staying with Mum so the child can press the button.

On the next trip, I would remind the child about the rules before we reached home, just to give him a chance to get it right. That’s called ‘communicating expectations’ and I’ll write about that next month. Narelle Smith

Nepean Food ServicesCelebrate 21 Years

Nepean Food Services celebrated its 21st birthday last month, hosting a buffet lunch for past and present volunteers, committee members, staff, Penrith Council, NSW Meals on Wheels, Tri Community Exchange, Macarthur Disability Services, meal suppliers and many more people that support them.

They had a fantastic day which was held at the Regentville Hall. It was decorated with fresh flowers, balloons and table cloths in their corporate colours of purple and orange.

David Bradbury attended and awarded Laurie (an original volunteer and former management committee member) a Certificate of Appreciation for his continued volunteering for Meals on Wheels for the last 21 years, and to Hazel who was a volunteer for many years. Garratts, one of the meal suppliers, generously donated a birthday cake on the day.

David Bradbury with Nepean Food Services staff, celebrating 21 years!
