Local father and fi rst time business owner, Stefan So is opening a Domino’s Pizza store in Glenmore Park next month and will be recruiting for up to 30 new part time and full time jobs.

With a background in Information Technology the father of two used to work in mining before deciding to take the plunge and become a franchisee and said he was looking forward to working for himself.

“I would often be working 60 plus hours a week and wouldn’t get much time with my family and I thought it would be better to spend all those hours working towards something for me, rather than for someone else.”

Stefan decided to go into franchising with Domino’s because of the great business model and the demand for the great product.

“Whenever we ordered pizza as a family we would get Domino’s and the stores were always busy with people walking out with stacks of pizza – I knew it was a good product and I’d have the support from the local business,” he said.

As well as creating jobs for Glenmore Park locals, Stefan is also looking forward to getting to know more people in the local community and get involved in local events.

7 Penrith YMCA Women’s Artistic Gymnasts have been invited to compete at the International Aloha Gym Fest in Hawaii in January 2016.

The team consists of gymnasts ranging from 9-15 who will compete against teams from the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Singapore.

Many of the students have been attending the YMCA since they were toddlers enjoying the Kinder gym program, and have progressed over the years to now compete for their club.

Amy Priest has been competing with Penrith YMCA for over fi ve years. Amy has represented the club at numerous state and national events and attended the Aloha Gymfest in January

2012. Amy exceeds on the vault apparatus and is looking forward to being competitive against gymnasts from around the world and aiming to take home a podium fi nish.

Nine year old Jade O’Connor from Glenmore Park started competing last year. She was the YMCA Level 1 champion and represented Western Sydney at the NSW State Championships. Jade is one of the youngest competitors in the Hawaii team, but is looking forward to learning from the older girls in the group.

“The competition is a wonderful experience for all gymnasts. Gymnasts are able to learn and develop friendships from other gymnasts around the world which assists in development of not only their gymnastics skills, but their confi dence both on and off the fl oor” said coach, Alyce Weatherstone.

The team is working hard to raise funds to get them to this prestigious event, and will be holding a fun Halloween Trivia Night on 31 October 2015. The girls are currently seeking donations for prizes and auction items, as well as services that can help make the night a success.

All supporters will be acknowledged in the Penrith YMCA Centre newsletter that is distributed to over 3000 members and widely acknowledged on the night.

Tickets for the trivia night are only $15 per adult or $100 per table of 10, $5 per child. To book or donate please contact the Penrith YMCA on 4733 7388

FAITH – ANGLICANArticle by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr & Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 and 7pm. Plus activities for adults and young people right throughout the week

As you read this, many thousands of Year 12 students are preparing to sit their HSC/IB examinations. Thirteen years of schooling coming to an end in several weeks of tough exams. Then, once the exams are over, comes

weeks of anxious waiting for the results. It is a nervous wait! Will the results be good enough to gain entry into the career or course of their choice, or, if the student falls short, will it end in disappointment?

What would happen if this was how God examined our life? Many people think this is what does happen at the end of our life; that God will examine every part of our life and make a decision on whether we pass or fail.

Consider what the Apostle Paul says in the Bible, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” In other words, none of us have reached God’s standard; we all fall short. Jesus himself puts God’s standard before us from the Bible; “Be perfect, therefore as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

If God’s standard is perfection and all of us have fallen short, where does that leave us? Like a Year 12 student who misses out? Or is there hope? See again what Paul says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justifi ed freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”

What great news! The Bible declares that Jesus “sat the exam for us” and he has been found to be perfect. Where we have failed, Jesus passed and the success of that pass is made available to any person who would turn to Jesus, committing their life to him. You do not have to fear or be uncertain about what will happen at the last examination, because in every sense, Jesus is the answer!

What great news this is! Can I encourage each of you to take up Jesus’ off er and turn to Him? You won’t regret it! And to all the HSC/IB students – all the best to you as you fi nish off your exams!

Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa has joined Deputy Premier and Minister for Justice and Police Troy Grant and Attorney General Gabrielle Upton in launching Graffi ti Removal Day, which will be held on Sunday, 18 October 2015.

Tanya Davies said the community is fed up with graffi ti tags staining homes, businesses and public areas.

“Graffi ti Removal Day is a great opportunity for community

groups and local residents in Mulgoa to get involved in the graffi ti clean-up and send vandals a message,” said Tanya Davies.

Graffi ti costs over $100 million each year to clean up in NSW alone; money far better spent on improving services for the community.

“Graffi ti Removal Day has been getting bigger every year and grassroots community support is crucial to its success,” said Tanya Davies, “The only tag we want to see is the hashtag #rolluptorollout that will be all over social media as we encourage a record number of volunteers to join the graffi ti clean-up.”

Last year about 2,000 volunteers removed 21,000 square metres of graffi ti from about 275 sites across NSW, saving the government and private property owners an estimated $1.5 million.

Deputy Premier Troy Grant said graffi ti is an ugly stain on all communities and that it is frustrating for people to see homes, businesses and public amenities vandalised for no reason.

Attorney General Gabrielle Upton said Graffi ti Removal Day was an opportunity for volunteers to show pride in their communities and send a message to vandals that their destructive and criminal behaviour won’t be tolerated.

Graffi ti Removal Day is a joint initiative between the NSW Government and Rotary Down Under. It is supported by a range of organisations including the NRL, Scouts Australia, Girl Guides NSW & ACT, Australian Men’s Shed Association (NSW Branch), PCYC, NSW Police, high schools and local councils.

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH

“When the chips are down” means: at the fi nal, critical moment when things get really diffi cult, desperate, and urgent. In poker when all bets have been made, the chips are down, and all that remains is that the cards are turned over the result is beyond the players’ control.

I have been involved recently in situations where the chips were truly down – a pregnant woman trying to survive aggressive cancer, an elderly man facing the rest of his life in jail, and someone struggling with mental illness that makes life seem unworkable. We all face situations at some point where “the chips are down”.

If this is true for you now it is most likely that you are dealing with something beyond your control. The question for the wellbeing of our souls is: Is there help beyond the human realm? Will God help us? And if so how do we tap into his help?

It’s tempting when the chips are down to get our picture of God from our crumbling circumstances – to conclude that he can’t or won’t help us. But when diffi cult circumstances make it hard to see God or what he is doing our picture of him must come from reading the Bible – sort of like radar helping to locate an aircraft when it is surrounded by clouds.

The Bible tells us that God is always at work for the good of those who love and trust him (even when we can’t see much evidence right now); that he is loving and strong; and that Jesus is a picture of God – loving outcasts, fi ghting for freedom, and healing people.

This picture is why we can trust God, and it is why we will experience his help when we trust him consistently. So if the chips are down for you, check out the picture of God in the Bible and start looking to him for help.

The ‘Taste of Everything’ Women’s Workshop in Glenmore Park came together last month and celebrated the unveiling of a special wall hanging quilt at the Floribunda Community Centre.

The quilt took over three months to make and was the idea of group member Linsey Hall. The unveiling was attended by the Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM, Former Mayor Faye Lo Po AM, Lana Borg from Mama Lana’s, Artist Karen Hall as well as members of the group and Penrith City Council.

The quilt pays tribute to those women in history that have

played an inspirational role in the local community, including Mary Collits, Esther May Price, Eileen Cammack, Faye Lo Po AM, Sister Mary-Louise Petro, Leanne Tobin, Karen Hull, Lana Borg and Jessica Fox.

The next project the group hopes to complete is a book outlining the women’s stories who appear on the quilt in detail as well as the process of creating it. To view this amazing work of art, you can visit the Floribunda Community Centre at 3 Floribunda Drive in Glenmore Park.

PARENTS CORNER

Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood ServicesP: 0409 986121 or 47218520E: [email protected]: Parenting In PenrithBlog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

It seems that everyone has an opinion on Attention Defi cit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). How much of what we know is based on what we have heard from the media or hearsay rather than from the research?

» 1 in 10 children have ADHD. » ADHD is NOT bad kids or bad parents. » ADHD is real. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder.

Just like children with autism (1 in 100 children) or Down Syndrome (1 in 800 children), children with ADHD are born with unique challenges.

Children with ADHD have trouble with: attention and focus; staying still; and making good choices.

The ABSOLUTE BEST treatment for ADHD is medication. Forget everything you have heard in the media about how bad the medication is for kids. Just as children with diabetes or epilepsy require medication to be well, children with ADHD require medication to get the necessary chemicals into the frontal lobes of their brain so they can function better.

Nothing else, not a good diet or alternative therapies or fi sh oil tablets, can get those chemicals into the frontal lobes. Medication is the only thing. Taking medication helps children with ADHD to focus and pay attention. This means that they have a better chance of learning, making friends, and enjoying the opportunities that other children have.

The medication for ADHD has actually been around for 80 years and advances in medical research mean that there are more choices now. Research over the past 40 years has shown that children with ADHD who do not take medication are at a higher risk when they are adults of: drug and alcohol abuse; mental health problems; dropping out of school; unemployment; incarceration; car accidents; and relationship breakdown with family and peers.

The NEXT BEST treatment for ADHD is positive parenting – things like Triple P. However, positive parenting does not work unless the child is taking medication. Without the medication, the child won’t have the attention span or working memory to listen or understand.

Parents who have a child with ADHD have to battle the stigma of ADHD every day. As 1 in 10 children have ADHD, this stigma leaves a lot of people (children and their families) not feeling very good about themselves, and feeling isolated and alone. The stigma prevents parents from making the best possible choices about their child’s treatment.

Parenting is a tough job. Parenting a child with ADHD is a tougher job. If you know a parent who has a child with ADHD, sometimes the best advice is an ear to listen and a heart to understand. If you know a child with ADHD, they having a problem, they are not the problem

NCNS and parents from the ADHD Support Group will be at Westfi eld Penrith (Big W end) on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of October raising awareness about ADHD. On the 16th October, we will be holding an ADHD seminar for parents wanting to know more about ADHD.

COUNSELLING CORNER

A long time ago God noticed that humans were bored (this is a middle eastern story). So he sent them Beauty and Ugliness, who happened to be two women. Ugliness was in rags — not pleasant to look at and morally despicable. Beauty was splendidly dressed, and her outer good looks were matched by inner harmony and goodness.

The two women started their journey together. They had to cross a desert and walk a long, long time before reaching humanity. Towards the end of the journey they were tired and hot; they passed by a lake, so Ugliness said: how about a swim? Beauty agreed.

They got undressed and left their clothes on the shore. Beauty swam far away, but Ugliness stayed near the shore. As soon as Beauty was out of sight, she got out of the water, took Beauty’s clothes, and went on by herself. When Beauty swam back, she realized she had been robbed. She was left with the rags; so she wore them. That is how Beauty and Ugliness came to humanity: each with the other’s clothes.

We are told not to judge a book by its cover…but we do. I remember reading about a man who had been blind since birth saying the gift of his blindness was that he didn’t judge people by how they looked. Lets hope we can be open to the beauty of each person we encounter even if they do present in rags!

Want to Achieve Flat Toned Abs Before Summer? My clients routinely lose weight and transform their bodies. You

can do it too! To achieve great abs is a winning combination of fat burning

cardio, resistance training and clean eating. That’s it, Exercise and Eating!!

Your Exercise Routine: An effective exercise routine includes intense cardiovascular training with effective resistance training. Are you doing this?

Cardio exercise is all about maintaining a high level of intensity. Unfortunately, a 30 minute walk isn’t a fat blasting workout. You need to push yourself!!

Resistance training is the second side to a fat burning workout. This means working your major muscle groups against challenging resistance in a way that stimulates your metabolism.

The key is to find the right intensity and to keep each muscle group guessing.

Your Diet: Diet is a big stumbling block for most people. If your diet is out of control then your abs will be too. You can’t trim your waist without trimming the junk from your diet.

Start by keeping your total calories in check. Do you know how many calories you eat? The best way to find out is to record everything you eat for a few days. Tally the number of calories that you eat each day and do an evaluation—feel free to recruit me to help out with this part. Together we’ll chart improvements for your diet and adjust your calories for maximum results.

See me for fat-blasting workouts that deliver serious results. Together we will get you on a program that will help you achieve your goals, exposing amazing shape and definition.

Call or email me today to get started!

HEALTH MATTERS

Core Strength Work for Chronic Lower Back Pain Due to Slipped Disc?

If you’ve read some of my previous articles then you may have gleaned that tight infl amed muscle & connective tissues in and around the spine are the cause of most chronic back pain either directly or indirectly. And if you’ve suff ered from chronic back pain then you may have come across someone spouting the conventional wisdom of ‘poor core strength as the problem that may have led to your sore back and that core strengthening may be the solution to back pain’.

I regularly see clients who have come in with long standing ‘chronic’ back pain, many of whom have been doing prescribed core strengthening exercise religiously. In some cases these exercises helped for a while, in others not, either way their back pain has remained. This is because the core strength theory is fundamentally fl awed. Here’s why.

Although an infl amed back can be due to many causes let’s look at an acute injury such as a ruptured disc. When a person has such an injury of the spine, the back muscles and connective tissue swell, become infl amed and lock up around the injury. It’s a standard protective mechanism that’s described in many standard medical texts. Once the muscles infl ame & tighten, in most cases they will remain that way (unless work is done specifi cally to de-infl ame & lengthen the muscles) and if disc protrusion exists, it will likely remain protruded.

Doing strength work of any type builds muscle but also causes muscles shortening and reduced range of motion unless regular stretching of the same muscles occurs. Doing core strengthening exercise will tighten core muscles so for a back injury involving a slipped disc (back tight maintaining disc in the protruded position) this is exactly the last thing one should do. Key to remediating this type of back injury is to do exactly the opposite. Completely stop core exercises, use manual therapy to de-infl ame & lengthen all aff ected tissue carefully. Only once injured tissue has healed should core strengthening be attempted carefully & with concurrent stretching exercises to maintain muscle length to guard against re-injury. If you have a problem with a back injury why not come talk to us at BHW – see our ad for contact details.

PARENTS CORNERMONEY MATTERS

Is Now the Time to Invest?Everyone is talking about property at the moment. We’ve seen some fantastic gains

in the market over the last few years and many people believe that there is still strong growth to come.

Others believe that we’re nearing the end of the growth cycle and the market will be flat for the next few years.

Still others believe that a property bubble is forming and it’s about to burst.Of course nobody has a crystal ball but the consensus amongst economists is that

there is no property bubble. Given that there is still a considerable under supply of properties (in Sydney) and a low interest rate environment for the foreseeable future, property values should continue to grow.

Of course an investment in property should be considered a long term investment which means that short term fluctuations in value are largely irrelevant. Instead of chasing short term capital gains which is largely out of your control, astute investors find opportunities in all market conditions by following a few simple rules.

1. Research. Know the market, determine demand for different property types, understand demographics, population movements and planned infrastructure upgrades.

2. Build an Investment Strategy. Start with the end in mind. What is it you want to achieve in the long term and build a strategy that will deliver.

3. Keep emotions under control. Investments should be made based on factual information. Falling in love with the wrong property could cost you and fear can make you pass on the opportunity of a lifetime. When emotion goes up, intellect goes down.

4. Manage your risks. All investments carry some risk they can be managed. A simple exercise is to write a list of everything you can think of that can go wrong. Then work through the list to mitigate each risk. You’ll be amazed at how much you can reduce your risk and the process can be quite cathartic.

We love working with our investor clients and can help with each of these steps. If you’re thinking of investing in property, why not give us a call?

Guess Who is Going to Be a Guide Dog Puppy Raiser???

Camille will be raising a Guide Dog puppy!! Yay!! Pony is so excited!

I can’t wait for you to meet him. He will be at the veterinary hospital every day for you to watch him grow. The more sights and sounds he experiences as a pup, the better he will be as an adult.Puppy Raising

New puppies arrive at the Guide Dogs Centre at the age of approximately eight weeks.

They work with purebred Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Labrador/Golden Retriever crosses. These breeds are calm, loyal and intelligent, and have a proven track record as Guide Dogs.

The pups are then placed with families that have been specially selected by Guide Dogs staff . They are called "puppy raisers". Over the next 12 months, these families will provide the pups with basic social skills, obedience and lots of fun! The pups will visit places they'll later encounter as Guide Dogs, and experience all the sights, sounds and most importantly for any dog, smells of the outside world.

The dogs are visited regularly by the Puppy Raising Offi cers, who monitor their development and take them on training walks on their local area. In addition, the pups spend time at the Guide Dogs Centre, to help them become familiar with their next home.Guide Dog Training

When the pups are about 14 months old, they return to the Guide Dogs Centre.

Over two weeks, the instructors carefully assess every puppy on several long walks. Prospective Guide Dogs must be eager to work, with good concentration and initiative. They must also control the temptation to be distracted by other animals.

With such stringent standards, not all puppies are suitable for guiding work. Puppies that are selected to become Guide Dogs undergo an intensive fi ve-month program to learn the complex skills required for their new job. They begin with simple commands and progress to more challenging tasks. These skills include:

• Walking in a straight line without sniffi ng.• Walking on the left-hand side slightly ahead of the trainer.• Stopping at all kerbs.• Waiting for a command before crossing roads.• Stopping at the top and bottom of stairs.• Avoiding obstacles at head height.• Avoiding spaces too narrow for a person and a dog to walk

through side by side.• Boarding and travelling on all forms of public transport.• Taking the trainer to a lift.• Laying quietly for some time, particularly at a workplace or

in restaurants.• Refusing commands that may lead the trainer into danger

- for example, if the trainer instructs the Guide Dog to walk them into a hole, the dog should refuse to walk forward when commanded.

Despite the hard work involved, Guide Dogs have a rewarding job indeed. These intelligent dogs lead an interesting life and enjoy its many challenges.

It takes nearly two years to develop a pup into a responsible Guide Dog.
